Live Migration Failed while Quick Migration is Ok...Virtual machine with synthetic FC HBA !

When I migration the virtual machine with synthetic FC HBA  in windows server 2012 R2 Cluster,it fails
but I do it in the style of quick migraton ,it secceed!

Yes, definitely check your zoning/masking.  Remember that with vHBA you have twice as many WWPNs to account for.  Performing a live migration makes use of both pairs during the transfer from one host to the other - one set is active on the machine
currently running and the second set is used to ensure connectivity on the destination.  So if you are using Address Set A on Host1, Host2 will try to set up the fibre channel connection using Address Set B.  If you do a quick migration, you would
continue to use the same Address Set on the second host.  That's why you most likely need to check your zoning/masking for the alternate set.

  • An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine (0x80070050)

I was exporting several VM's from a Vhost so that i could import them into a new cluster. Four out of the five machines went off with no hitch and were exported and then imported.  However one of the machines throws up an error durring the export
"An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine.
Filed to copy file during export.
Failed to copy file from 'D:\path\of\vhd\VM.vhd to 'D:\path\of\export\VM.vhd': The file esists (0x80070050)"

I have found an answer to my own question after
further investigation  … In hopes of helping anyone who may have a similar problem in the future....
What happened was the server has two VHD’s one is located in C:\vm\vhd\server.vhd the second was located in a different directory such as C:\vm\vhd1\server.vhd
as both vhd files were named identically when the export was attempted it tried to move both files into the same directory I assume giving the “file already exists error”.

  • Virtual Machines With Large RAM Fails Live Migration

    Hi everyone....
I have a 2-node Hyper-V cluster managed by SCVMM 2012 R2.  I am current unable to migrate a VM that is using 48 GB of RAM.  Each node has 256 GB of RAM running Windows Server 2012 R2.
When the VM is running on node 1; there is 154 GB in use, and 102 GB available.  When I try to migrate this VM to node 2, (which has 5.6 GB in use, and 250 GB available), I get this error message in VMM:
    Error (10698)
The virtual machine (abc-defghi-vm) could not be live migrated to the virtual machine host (xyz-wnbc-nd03) using this cluster configuration.
    Recommended Action
Check the cluster configuration and then try the operation again.
(In case you were wondering, I ran the cluster validation and it passed without a problem.)
The Failover Cluster event log shows two key entries:
    First:
Cluster resource 'SCVMM xyz-wnbc-vm' in clustered role 'SCVMM xyz-wnbc-vm Resources' has transitioned from state OfflineCallIssued to state OfflinePending.
Exactly 60 seconds later, this message takes place:
Cluster resource 'SCVMM abc-defghi-vm in clustered role 'SCVMM abc-defghi-vm Resources' rejected a move request to node 'xyz-wnbc-nd03'. The error code was '0x340031'.  Cluster resource 'SCVMM abc-defghi-vm' may be busy or in a state where it
cannot be moved.  The cluster service may automatically retry the move.
Nothing found after Googling "0x340031".  Does anyone know what error that is?
    Other notes:
If the Virtual machine is shut down I can migrate it.
If I lower the VM RAM settings and start it up again I can do a Live Migration.
All other VMs can do the Live Migration; largest RAM size is 16GB.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Sir,
Could you please check if  NUMA setting for every node are same via using perfmon.exe and using counter "Hyper-v VM Vid Numa Node " :
    >>and the virtual machine in question has it enabled as well.
Could you please also post the NUMA setting of that VM for us ?

  • Live Migrating Virtual Machines with Shared VHDx

I am facing problems when live migrating a Virtual Machine that is using Shared VHDx.  The Virtual Machine gets migrated that is the configuration gets migrated, but the Virtual Machine fails to start up and if manually tried, it fails too.
What is the method to to live migrate virtual machines that are using Shared VHDx.  Thanks in advance.

    Another couple of gotchas:
You cannot do host-level backups of the guest cluster.  This is the same as it always was.  You will have to install backup agents in the guest cluster nodes and back them up as if they were physical machines.
You cannot perform a hot-resize of the shared VHDX.  But you can hot-add more shared VHDX files to the clustered VMs.
You cannot Storage Live Migrate the shared VHDX file.  You can move the other VM files and perform normal Live Migration.
as Long as you have your shared VHDx on a SMB3 Share you also could have the Nodes of the Guest Cluster on different Hyper-V Hosts.

  • Best way to migrate existing XP SP3 partition to a virtual machine to run via Windows 8.1 as physical partition and not a vhd?

Hi I have a current XP SP3 setup have been using in a dual boot with Windows 8.1(on separate partitions on different hard drives - I think these are SATA drives)  but now am thinking of migrating my XP partition preferably as a live virtual machine
to be run as a guest via Windows 8.1 as host so I don't have to do the rebooting.  Also prefer this to making a VHD of my XP so can use the existing partition allocated for it rather than taking up extra space as VHD on my windows 8 (and don't want yet
to replace my xp dual boot in case it does not work so well as vhd, as I have a lot of old educational programs my kids still use on it that I don't really want to put onto my W8.1).  Will also save time if I don't have to convert it to VHD first.  I
also do not want to reinstall a new XP Sp3 virtual machine from scratch for same reason - will take too long to resetup -just use existing as is.
I have used VMWare player and Virtual Box in past with an old 98SE system as a virtual VHD/VPC file but VMWare workstation is paid which may be the one I need to use a physical partition but I prefer to try freeware options first.
Will Hyper-V in Windows 8.1 (I have retail PRO version of both my XP and Windows 8.1) be able to do the same as VMWare workstation?  OR is there another option to run the physical XP?
The other thing with my XP setup is that the user profiles that people login with are located on a different partition E (80GB) to my XP which is on J (100GB) and most of the programs for it run from partition D (over 120GB) and the XP boot loader resides
on a partition C (2GB) (which is not the Windows8.1 partition which becomes C only when it boots, but this C drive for XP may also be having the Windows 8 boot loader and files for that -using EasyBCD to handle boot menu of W7 type boot loader).
So I need a system that can mount these other physical partitions also alongside with my XP partition when it boots up.
So what are my options for running this XP SP3 setup via Windows 8 as a guest operating system?
Also will doing this be likely to require reactivation of my existing windows XP (retail) which means I cannot then use it again if I go back to the XP dual boot at times or in case the VM setup does not work?
Also do I need to change my XP first so that it boots off its own drive rather than the C partition - and how do I set this up then using EasyBCD or windows boot repair?

HI I found I had to make physical disk offline to use in Hyper-V which I cannot do and do not want to do with all partitions - cannot choose just ones want.
So now am trying to make VM of my physical XP -and other partitions neeeded but D partition is over 127Gb so cannot use Disk2VHD.
Here is what am trying now - any other suggestions for alternate software to vmware convertor/disk2VHD maybe to do partitions over 127GB?  I have posted also at VMware forums but no answer as yet.
Advice on doing a physical XPSP3 conversion to a VM for Virtual box and hyper-v ultimately
Hi I need advice as to best way to convert an existing XP Sp3 install on a physical hard drive along with other related partitions to a Virtual box VM image with aim to convert that VM image to a Hyper-V VM for use with Windows 8.1 host.
I have several C (boot ini partition), D programs, E Data, etc partitions and a current dual boot with an extra XP install I use as a backup system.
My main XP is on J drive and other XP on I drive with C drive boot ini that switches btw 2 with J set as default.
I have a D partition that is over 127 Gb so cannot use Disk2VHD which would have been easier, and it seems there is not a way to make a direct Hyper-V VM from converter but only Vmware VM?
I do not have or want to purchase as yet VMware Workstation as have W8.1 Pro that can use Hyper-V to run my XP SP3.
I seem to also have an issue with COM+ corrupted on my machine XP J drive ( It tried to reinstall the COM+ but my es.dll file won't register and I did get a failed conversion with converter when tried earlier at 94% saying VSS snapshots have
reached their limit).  I think this is related to my COM+ issue which I am not sure now how to fix apart from repair install of my Xp (as I have tried repairing COM with various articles searched on google to no avail) which I may do first before
retry conversion.  However my ALT XP on I drive seems to be fine with being able to browse the COM+ applications ok.  SO maybe I  can use that instead but it is the J drive XP I want the most (not sure if will work at reboot if I do not
    hot clone it?)
I have read also the manual for converter 5.5.1 ver standalone and am not sure of a few things so if someone can guide me it would be very much appreciated.
First of all which version VM should I make image of  if I later want to convert it to a Hyper-V VM image (I only have free Virtual Box latest ver, VMware Player and Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 PRo) ie: VMware workstation 10 or Vmware Player 6 or lower
ver or other?  OR is there another software I should install for the conversion or later conversion to Hyper-V?  I prefer to use Hyper-V over Virtual Box and Vmware Player if possible, but should these others work just as well for my Xp Sp3 existing
system as a VM in Windows 8.1?  Please advise which you think is best of these?
Should I leave all configuration options off while converting and even XP licence, workgroup etc or is it most likely that I will have to reactivate my XP (retail ver) once I reboot in the VM although I am putting to run on Windows 8.1 host on exact same
hardware as my current XP in dual boot (replacing my physical copies which I don't intend to use after conversion)?  Can I enter licence etc later as well?
I currently have 8 GB ram total -should I leave Xp one at max it suggests of around 3Gb ram?
I have Quad core processor -but should I make Xp Vm one dual core for when it runs on W8.1 host to allow the host some processors so can run at same time or leaving my Xp at quad core will be ok?
Network - I want to use host one as I read it is safer for obsolete XP so do I set that at start or is it better to change this later too -allowing xp to have own internet access (maybe as may need to reactivate also - don't want to call Microsoft
    if can avoid it)?
If I just want to convert resulting VM to Hyper-V VM -which software to use after for this that is freeware (Virtual Box or VMware Player or Hyper-V -not sure which can do it) and do I not then install Vmware tools?
SYSPprep should I do anyway regardless of what target VM will be when configuring later, even if on same hardware machine? OR can I just boot Vm and see if boots ok first?
Anything else I should set specifically for this future use of the VM image in hyper-v?

  • Migrating iLife apps from new iMac to G5 machine with Leopard

I bought the iMac which came with iLife and then built up a dual proc G5 to do music and video on. I don't want to have to buy a copy of iLife since I already have it but really want Garage Band, Movie Maker and iDVD on the G5. I started to migrate these with Migration Assistant but it didn't give me an option to choose just those apps. Is there a problem with me migrating all apps and then just deleting the ones I don't need on the G5? I assumed this would move the licenses for the apps from the iMac to the G5. Can someone confirm if the Migration effectively uninstalls the app on the machine it's being migrated from?
I'm not interested in making a copy of these three apps and am happy to delete them from iMac once moved over but it's not clear to me that this will work (even thought guys as the Apple store said I could do it).
    Thanks

The short answer is probably no.
I have 2 imacs both Intel.
I was having a problem with iLife apps on my older imac and so I dumped the iLife apps to reinstall them.
I inserted the install disk for my newer imac and it refused to allow me to install from that disk.
I used Pacifist and it worked for all apps except iPhoto which would not work properly even after several attempts.
I located my iLife 08 disk and it installed fine.
Despite the fact that most of the iLife apps seemed to install using Pacifist, they were suspect so I installed them all afresh from the ILife 08 disk.
The last thing I need is a program that may screw up and lose some of my photos, movies or compositions, especially when the package is reasonably priced.

  • Failed to query database in oracle virtual machine

Hello I am exposing a cloud service with WCF which is connected to the oracle database in a virtual machine on my machine if Client runs perfectly, but want to use the cloud service mark me the following error:
"An ExceptionDetail, likely created by IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults=true, whose value is:
System.ArgumentException: Unable to find the requested .Net Framework Data Provider.  It may not be installed.
       at System.Data.EntityClient.EntityConnection.GetFactory(String providerString)."
What I understand is some connection to Oracle, but that is not, alguine can help me.
    I am using Entity Framework.

    Hi,
From my experience, this thread seems more related with
the Entity Framework forum, but anyway, you should use a data provider that can handle EF in Oracle. There are couple of 3rd party data providers for oracle that support entity framework - devart, datadirect, and Oracle also has a new version of the
    ODP that supports EF.
You can see the list here:

  • Failing to assemble Downloaded Pre-built Virtual Machine for  SOA Suite and BPM Suite 11g

    Hello,
I checked the download checksum of the files downloaded for Pre-built Virtual Machine for  SOA Suite and BPM Suite 11g ( Pre-built Virtual Machine for SOA Suite and BPM Suite 11g ) and they all match checksums.
however, when I try to assemble them with 7zip, I get a corrupt error message.  I have tried downloading with Chrome and Internet Explorer.  I have also tried assembling the 7zip files different ways.
Is there anything else I should try?
Running on Windows 7, 64 bit machine.  (with lots of disk space).
Is there any other way to get the files?
    thank you.

    thanks for the response
I guess I will have to do that as well.
However, it defeats the speed with which can ramp up with the toolset;  thus slowing my time I can allocate to learning it...

I was able to replicate 2 out 5 VMs on our server but I am not sure what this error refers to.  Any ideas... The VMs are up and Running
    Thanks

    Hi,
On the Hyper-V host server, check “Replication Health” for the VM and post the result.
Also you can use PowerShell command to check VM state and VM replication health, check that and give us feedback for further troubleshooting.

  • Hyper-V live migration failed

There is Hyper-V cluster with 2 nodes. Windows Server 2012 R2 is used as operating system.
Trying to live migrate test VM from node 1 to node 2 and get error 21502:
Live migration of 'Virtual Machine test' failed.
'Virtual Machine test' failed to fixup network settings. Verify VM settings and update them as necessary.
VM has Network Adapter connected to Virtual switch. This vSwitch has Private network as connection type.
If I set virtual switch property to "Not connected" in Network Adapter settings of VM I get successful migration.
All VM's that are not connected to any private networks (virtual switches with private network connection type) can be live migrated without any issues.
Is there any official reference related to Hyper-V live migration of VM's that have "private network" connection type?

I can Live Migrate virtual machines with adapters on private switches without error. Aside from having the wrong name, the only way I can get it to fail is if I make the switch on one host use a different QoS minimum mode than the other and
enable QoS on the virtual adapter. Even then I get a different message than what you're getting. I only get that one with differently named switches.
There is a PowerShell cmdlet available to see why a guest won't run on another host.
Here's an example of its usage.
There's a way to use it to get it to Live Migrate.
But there is no way to truly Live Migrate three virtual machines in perfect lockstep. Even if you figure out whatever is preventing you from migrating these machines, there will still be periods during Live Migration where they can't communicate across that
private network. You also can't guarantee that all these guests will always be running on the same host without preventing Live Migration in the first place. This is why there really isn't anyone doing what you're trying to do. I suggest you consider another
    isolation solution, like VLANs.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with SP2: 'SQLEXPRESS'-instance installation fails while any other instance name installation succeeds.

We supply our software package that also includes the unattended installation (with /QS and so on) of SQL Server R2 Express (with SP2).
The setup works good in about 99.9% cases, but one customer complained that after the "successful SQL Sever installation (at least, it looked so!) he could not open the supplied database getting some strange error messages...
After some months of trial-n-error attempts we are now able to reproduce the problems this custumer had. But we cannot find the reason of the problem.
So the test computer is a virtual machine with Windows 7 + sp1 32-bit.
Among the programs/tools installed on this machine there were (in the following order):
SQL Server 2008 Express - the default SQLEXPRESS instance
    SSMS
    VS 2010 Pro (German)
    SQL Server 2008 Express R2 (with SP 1 or SP2 - ?) - the default SQLEXPRESS instance
Then some of them were uninstalled in the following order:
    SQL Server 2008 Express
    SSMS
    SQL Server 2008 Express R2
Now we tried to install (in normal mode with UI) the SQL Server 2008 Express R2 with SP2.

    So the questions are:
What could be the reason of the problem (and only for SQLEXPRESS instance that was earlier installed and then uninstalled)? I will provide the complete Detail.txt file if needed.

    Thank you Lydia!
Unfortunately the simple check the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\SQL does /did not work in our case since there is no any instance
    name there,
However there seem to be some "rudiments" under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and/or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.
So I will now try to check the subkeys of these two keys as it was mentioned by Xiao-Min Tan.

  • Virtual Machine Export Failed

I am requesting help with a continuing problem I am having attempting to export a Hyper-V Virtual Machine to a shared drive internally installed on a Domain Server.
When I attempt the export, a few second later I received the following error message: “An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine. Failed to copy file during export. General access denied error
    (0x80070005).”
I have spent numerous hours searching Blog Posts and Online forums for a definitive solution to this problem. The purposed online solutions that I have come across refer to
NTFS level permissions & share level permissions set at the drive share for the Hyper-V Computer account, the User account used, and System account. None have worked for me. Here is an example of such a post finding:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2008849.
I also tried the settings from a purposed solution for Hyper-V – General Access Denied Error message listed in this post here:
    http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2009/02/hyper-v-general-access-denied-error-for.html. No luck here also.
I have a small Microsoft 2008 R2 SP1 Server network that consists of 2 Domain Controllers, (one which serve as a Hyper-V Host). 4 virtual machines and a combination of wireless and PC based Windows 7 and Windows 8.1
    clients.
The 1TB drive I’m attempting to move my virtual machines to is brand new, purchased five days ago. I reformatted this drive a couple times to see if that had any affect, none at all.
So, I’m reaching out for any other suggestions that I might try. Please, remember I have already tried and have in place the NTFS level permissions & share level permissions set at the drive share for the Hyper-V
Computer account, the User account used, and System account.
Your help with this problem will be very much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Martiar

Also, you must export to a UNC path, not a mapped drive.  And your Hyper-V Server must be a member of the domain (as that is what requires the read, write, and create permissions on the share), your user account needs to only read the path.
Also, the permissions must be right at both the share and NTFS levels.
Personally, why not add the drive to a Hyper-V Server and export locally?  If you are trying to set up and SMB share for running VMs you have to use Hyper-V 2012 R2 and your File Server must be 2012 R2 as well.

In my view using this Feature you loss the my most Importent Sexy Thing why i do Virtualisation ? beeing seperate from the HW Layer.

  • Live Migration Fails with error Synthetic FiberChannel Port: Failed to finish reserving resources on an VM using Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V

Hi, I'm currently experiencing a problem with some VMs in a Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster using Fiber Channel adapters with Virtual SAN configured on the hyper-v hosts.
I have read several articles about this issues like this ones:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/baca348d-fb57-4d8f-978b-f1e7282f89a1/synthetic-fibrechannel-port-failed-to-start-reserving-resources-with-error-insufficient-system?forum=winserverhyperv
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18698.hyper-v-virtual-fibre-channel-troubleshooting-guide.aspx
But haven't been able to fix my issue.
The Virtual SAN is configured on every hyper-v host node in the cluster. And every VM has 2 fiber channel adapters configured.
All the World Wide Names are configured both on the FC Switch as well as the FC SAN.
All the drivers for the FC Adapter in the Hyper-V Hosts have been updated to their latest versions.
The strange thing is that the issue is not affecting all of the VMs, some of the VMs with FC adapters configured are live migrating just fine, others are getting this error.
    Quick migration works without problems.
We even tried removing and creating new FC Adapters on a VM with problems, we had to configure the switch and SAN with the new WWN names and all, but ended up having the same problem.
At first we thought is was related to the hosts, but since some VMs do work live migrating with FC adapters we tried migrating them on every host, everything worked well.
My guess is that it has to be something related to the VMs itself but I haven't been able to figure out what is it.
Any ideas on how to solve this is deeply appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Eduardo Rojas
