Live migration Vnic on hosts randomly losing connectivity HELP

Hello Everyone,
I am building out a new 2012 R2 cluster using VMM with converged network configuration. I have 5 physical nics and teaming 3 of them using dynamic load balancing. I have configured 3 virtual network adapters in host which are for management,
cluster and Live migration. The live migration nic loses connectivity randomly and fails migrations 50% of the time.
Hardware is IBM blades (HS22) with Broadcom Netextreme II nics. I have updated firmware and drivers to the latest versions. I found a forum with something that looks very similar but this was back in November so Im guessing there is a fix.
http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/mvaneijk/2013/11/vnics-and-vms-loose-connectivity-at-random-on-windows-server-2012-r2/
Really need help with this.
Thanks

Hi,
Does your cluster can pass the cluster validation test? Please install the recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server 2012 R2-based failover clusters update first
then monitor again.

• Unable to Live Migrate to Some Hosts

We have been having issues where we cannot Live Migrate to some of our hosts. I have verified the VMM Agent is the same version and the Host OS are the same. I've compared all settings in VMM and Hyper-V between hosts that are Live Migration Candidates against
hosts that are not Live Migration Candidates. The Rating Message for those that we are unable to Live Migrate to is the following:
Unable to migrate or clone the virtual machine "" because the version of virtualization software on the host does not match the version of virtual machine's virtualization software on source (6.3.9600.17334). To be migrated or cloned,
the virtual machine must be stopped and should not contain any saved state.
Any help resolving this is greatly appreciated!

Hi,
i have also a few questions. You say, that you are the total noob. Therefore you should check the total noob things :)
What Version of SCVMM are you using?
What about your infrastructure? Hyper-V Cluster? And how many Cluster?
Are you trying to migrate between Hyper-V Cluster? Or between Cluster nodes?
Are the VMs made high available on your Hyper-V Host?
Does the target host have access to the shared volume?
did you check the processor version?
Check the Patch Level of the Hosts and the Agents
Are source and destination host the same OS Version and Patch level? Are they both in the same Cluster?
without knowing more about your infrastructure i could ask a lot more questions. It would be cool if you could give us some more information about your setup. OR let us know your solution if you are able to fix the problem.
regards,

• Randomly losing connectivity

Firefox always seems to just freeze (in regard to connectivity, not to program activity) all the time and hang on "connecting...." I will usually open IE to see if it is a connection problem, and IE works fine ("fine" being solely in regard to connectivity). I usually restart firefox and it is fine. I know this sounds like an easy fix if I have one tab open with google or something, but when I'm doing something online with multiple tabs open, or if I can't save what I'm doing first because it won't connect, it becomes more of a pain. I have never had this problem until firefox 7 (actually, everything after 3).
Is there a caching issue with the new firefox?? Is there a setting I need to adjust? I don't get it, it happens all the time. I'll be browsing the internet, then out of nowhere, it everything will just hang. Since it predominately happens when I open a few tabs quickly in concession, I thought it was just a bandwidth issue and it would take a little longer. But then I would stop all of the tabs but one, and that didn't help. Then I would stop ALL of the tabs, and just try to open google, and even that wouldn't open. Not until I restarted firefox. Normally, I would just think I overwhelmed firefox, but this has never happened until the latest versions of firfox. I could have near 20 tabs open in the old ones and the only issues I'd have would be bandwidth issues if I were trying to connect on too many tabs at the same time. Now it seems to completely crash firefox's connection.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
Try to decrease the value of the pref network.http.max-connections from 256 to 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

• Losing Connection From BT Hub

Hi All,
Not posted here before but hopefully I provide the info needed
I have a BT Home Hub 2.0 (Black with blue lights down right hand side) with firmwhere 4.7.5.1.83.3.31 (Type B) and a Broadband Accelarator/I-Plate at the main phone socket in the wall.
I have worked from home for a number of years and rely on the internet, I have 2 laptops (1 wireless and one ethernet) and 1 gaming machine (also on ethernet). The problem I am having is that my gaming machien on ethernet randomly losing connection with the BT hub while my other 2 laptops on wireless and ethernet remain connected. It's strange as the others are still working. I can either fix the problem by clicking on the connection icon near the clock and letting windows fix it or restart the machine where it also fixes it.
The gaming machine spec is:
Manufacturer: Self built
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
Memory: 8 GB DDR2
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 12804MB GDDR5
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Motherboard: NVIDIA NForce 680i SLI
Computer Case: Antec 900 Ultimate Gaming Case
The only thing I have changed on my gaming machine is the graphics card, sometimes the internet would be fine for hours then lose connections, othertimes I lose connection after 20 minutes. I have not managed to tie it down to any software or game that causing the problem. It's really strange. Before this problem, the gaming machine has been fine on ethernet connection for the past year. I have not changed any other hardware of BT Lines etc.
Any pointers would be greatly appreacited
Thanks!

Hello,
Have Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V server, fully patched, new install. There are two intel Network cards ant there is configured NIC team of them (Windows NIC teaming). Also there is some "Virtual" NICS with assigned VLAN ID.
If I enable VMQ on these NICS and do shared nothing live migration of VM - host gets BSDO. What can be wrong?

• Wireless Keyboard keeps losing connection

My wireless keyboard started getting hung up on a key and continues to to type it until the KB loses connection. Then it reconnects and sometimes repeats this several times before it starts working normally again.
It has also just been randomly losing connection without hanging up on a key.
Batteries are new and the iMac/keyboard and mouse is less than a year old.
Any thoughts?
Mouse is losing connection too at times, but nothing like the keyboard.

Hello B:
One thing to try is to make the devices "favorites" Directions for that are in other posts of mine.
However, the keyboard (from your description) could be faulty. Since it is less than one year old, I suggest you call Applecare with a warranty issue. I had a KB replaced (in warranty) a couple of years ago. Apple replaced it and paid the shipping both ways.

• Failover Cluster 2008 R2 - VM lose connectivity after live migration

Hello,
I have a Failover Cluster with 3 server nodes running. I have 2 VMs running in one the the host without problems, but when I do a live migration of the VM to another host the VM lose network connectivity, for example if I leave a ping running, the ping command
has 2 response, and 3 packets lost, then 1 response again, then 4 packets lost again, and so on... If I live migrate the VM to the original host, everything goes OK again.
The same bihavior is for the 2 VMs, but I do a test with a new VM and with that new VM everything Works fine, I can live migrate it to every host.
Any advice?
Cristian L Ruiz

Hi Cristian Ruiz,
What your current host nic settings now, from you description it seems you are using the incorrect network nic design. If you are using iSCSI storage it need use the dedicate
network in cluster.
If your NIC teaming is iconfigured in switch independent + dynamic, please try to disable VMQ on VM Setting for narrow down the issue area.

Hi!
thank you for your reply!
Yes, We are using iSCSI storage, but it has its own NICs for that (2 independant NIcs just to connect the server with the storage) and they are configured to not use those NICs to cluster communication. The team configuration is just for the LAN connectivity.
The NIC teaming is configured using BACS4 software from a DELL server and in Smart Load Balancing and Failover (as you can see here
http://www.micronova.com.ar/cap01.jpg). The link you passed is for Windows Server 2012 and we are running Windows Server 2008 R2, BUT as you can see in the following capture the NICs has that feature disabled
( http://www.micronova.com.ar/cap02.jpg ).
One test that I'm thinking to do is to remove teaming configuration and test just with one independant NIC for LAN connection. But, I do not know if you think another choice.
Thanks in advance.
Cristian L Ruiz
Sorry, another choice I'm thinking too is to update the driver versión. But the server is in production and I need to take a downtime window for test that.

• Live Migration - Failed to establish a connection because of an unsupported protocol version (protocol version 5.0)

I'm getting a not the disk and everything) back to the host I originally had it on. Here is my setup:
Host 1 - Microsoft Storage Server 2012 Standard (NAS)
Host 2 - Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 (All connected virtual hard drives use the SMB 3.0 protocol to connect to the NAS - Host 1)
Delegation is setup on both of these hosts to include:
-Trust this computer, Use Kerberos only, Services - cifs, Hyper-V Replication, Microsoft Virtual Console Service, Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service
Live Migration is setup on both of these hosts to include:
-Enable incoming and outgoing live migrations using Kerberos
-Use any available network for live migration
I was able to migrate the VM from host 1 to host 2 with no problems. But when I try to migrate the VM host 1 that's when I encounter the error.
I saw a KB article similar to the issue I'm having but it only effects Server 2008 R2 (KB2705759)
I've rebooted both hosts but still get the error. The VM that is on host 2 has it's hard drive on host 1 run's fine so there are no connection issues there.
I've searched the Internet for this issue and keep coming up empty handed. I even named the virtual switch on both hosts the same to see if that would work. Please help! I'd rather not do an export and import of the VM because I'm evaluating
this product so I want to make sure it works before I put it into production.

Hi PPlbrad,
Agree with Shabarinath .
We can just live migration the VM from low version (2012) to high version (2012R2) but the reverse is not ture .
So do hyper-v replica (just for updating )

• Host server live migration causing Guest Cluster node goes down

Hi
I have two node Hyper host cluster , Im using converged network for Host management,Live migartion and cluster network. And Separate NICs for ISCSI multi-pathing. When I live migrate the Guest node from one host to another , within guest cluster the node
is going down. I have increased clusterthroshold and clusterdelay values. Guest nodes are connecting to ISCSI network directly from ISCSI initiator on Server 2012.
The converged networks for management ,cluster and live migration networks are built on top of a NIC Team with switch Independent mode and load balancing as Hyper V port.
I have VMQ enabled on Converged fabric and jumbo frames enabled on ISCSI.
Can Anyone guess why would live migration cause failure on the guest node.
thanks

No entry is made on the cluster log of the destination node.
To me this means the nodes cannot talk to each other, but I don’t know why.
They are on the same domain. Their server names resolve properly and they can ping eachother both by name and IP.

• Randomly losing network connection over wireless

Shortly after installing the 10.4.5 software update, my G4 iBook with built-in Airport Extreme card has been losing connection with increasing frequency. Built-in Ethernet use is unaffected. I'm calling this problem thrash-and-drop.
1. When it's losing signal, processor activity goes through the roof. I had Activity Monitor running during a thrash-and-drop. kernel_task CPU consumption goes from under 1% before the event, to over 80% during the thrashing, and back under 1% after the thrashing stops. The activity is so bad the cursor can't be controlled: using the track pad sends the pointer all over the screen or nowhere at all.
2. This has been observed to occur with two different wireless base stations: A Linksys WRT54G and an older SMC 802.11b router. Either router is within 10 feet of the computer. Only one is running at a time. There are no other base stations in range.
3. Another iBook G4 (OS 10.3, Airport Extreme card (not built-in)), sitting next to it, shows no change and its wireless behavior is unaffected.
Initially, this seemed more likely to happen when Safari was loading Flash-heavy pages. And after thrashing and dropping a connection, it was able to reconnect after either a reboot or a five minute sleep. Currently, it can't connect to a base station for more than a minute. Most recently, it thrashed and dropped while I was selecting the base station to use. This is true regardless of the application running. In fact, it will thrash-and-drop when there are no user applications running at all, after a fresh reboot.
I've tried the following things to address the problem. None have affected the thrash-and-drop problem. Admittedly, most of this is random:
1. Back up and delete network preferences in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
2. Turn off IPv6 in System Preferences/Network
3. Back up and delete network preferences in ~/Library/Preferences (com.apple.NetInfoManager.plist and com.apple.NetworkUtility.plist)
Has anybody else seen this problem? I want to blame it on the 10.4.5 upgrade but I haven't seen anybody else complaining about 10.4.5 doing this to them. If there's something I can do to fix this in a software setting, I'd much prefer that to yet another roadtrip to the Apple store.
1.33 GHz G4 iBook Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi!
I have the same problem of randomly losing network connection over wireless, though mine is hardly related to surfing.
I have an external storage drive in which I use for backup of my stuff, and I access the drive via my modem, using the airport. Of late, I noticed that when copying files from my iBook to the external drive, the connection would suddenly drop before the transfer is completed. This began to occur with increasing frequency, particularly when transferring large files.
I have since abandoned wireless connection, and reverted to my trusty cable. Still, I admit that I'm really curious about the cause of the apparent lack of reliability with my wireless connection. Has it something to do with the airport?

• Losing pings on live migration

I currently have a 2 node OVM 3.1.1 cluster, fully patched, and have noticed that I lose network connectivity while performing a live migration. I have separate networks for VM's and for live migration. I am new to OVM so I do not know if this is typical or not. It appears that every time I migrate a VM, the client will lose connectivity to the network for anywhere from 5 - 20 seconds.

Are you talking about lost pings to the guest VM that is live migrated? If yes, that I'd suppose that to be normal behaviour, since there has to be some interruption, once the memory contents is finally synchronized between the source and the target VM server.
Depending on much RAM is used by the running VM and the speed of your network, this "outage" might vary in time, but there will surely always be some time span where pings to the VM that is being live migrated get lost.

• RDS 2012 re-connection after live migration.

Is there a way to speed up the re-connection after a live migration?
So if i am in a vm that live migrates it feels like it hangs for about 10 seconds the reconnects and is fine..... While this is OK its not ideal. Is there a way to improve this?

Actually 10 seconds sounds like a very long time to me. In my experience using Shared Nothing Live Migration I've seen the switch being almost instantaneous, with a continual ping possibly dropping one or two packets, and certainly quick enough that it's
unlikely any users would notice the change. So in terms of whether it can be improved I'd say yes.
As you can see from the technical overview here
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831435.aspx the final step is for a signal to be sent to the switch informing it of the new MAC address of the servers new destination, so I wonder if the slow switch over might be connected to that, or perhaps
some other network issue.
Is the network connection poor between the servers which might cause a delay during the final sync of changes between the server copies? Are you moving between subnets?

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.
