Live switching?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but. . . I've been asked by a local church to help them upgrade thier video production capabilities. Currently they have one consumer level DV camera set up into iMovie via firewire and they capture the footage during the service, throw on a few pre-loaded titles and export/burn onto dvd right then and there.
It seems they want to upgrade to 2 cameras ( I have been told they have 2 JVC 500's ) and they want to be able to do the same thing as thier doing now.
I'm a bit old school when it comes to studio work, so I have the 2 cameras into a switcher, mix it live onto tape and capture your individual footage as well for editing out mistakes later. What I am thinking though, is getting set up with a DV mixer, setting up with monitors and the like as in a typical studio set up and using the firewire out to capture on the computer (They have a G5 dual processor, they just can't figure out FCP which they have, which is where I come in. . .)
my question is this, I know FCP can do multiclip once the footage is captured, but has anyone tried, or can it be used as a switcher for live events?
If not, can anyone make suggestions on how to update thier set-up for 2 camera shoots and still be able to burn the dvd's right away?
Thanks,
Russ

You need a switcher. Check B&H or any of the online video equipment shoppes. Prices range from a few hundred to multi-thousand bucks.
You can also get a DVD recorder that will work just like a tape machine. Leave the Macintosh out of the whole process.

  • Older SB Live switching from 4 to 2 speake

Hi, Just recently my card is switching from 4 speakers to 2 when I load certain games or software. I then have to bring up audiohq and switch back to the 4 speaker setting. This is fine for days on end and then something I load kicks it back to 2 speakers again. If anyone else has solved this problem can they please advise. Thanx.

I am experiencing this same problem.  When switching to the 5ghz only radio it reports the channel is invalid when I attempt to update.  Whether I choose automatic or any other channel it keeps saying it is invalid.  I am running the latest updates on my macbook pro and airport utility 6.0.  My airport express is version 7.6.1.  It is being run in bridge mode.  I also have a time capsule in bridge mode as well.
I am still working on this.

  • Oracle on windows cluster, with failsafe installed. Can it be switched live

    Hi all
We have a oracle database, 10.2.0.4, installed on a 2 node Windows cluster (2003 R2 64 bit). Only one node is the active node. On top of this Failsafe is installed.
    Oracle is used for SAP.
Normally when I need to switch the Oracle database from node1 to node2 I follow this procedure:
    1 bring down SAP
    2 set the database offline
3 switch the Oracle database using failsafe
    4 set the database online
    5 start sap
Being a hospital we just want to have SAP up all the time, this procedure only takes 20 min but I wondered if the switch could be done live
So just go into the failsafe manager and switch, (won't do it in prime time of course)
Can this live switch result in a corrupt database?
    Thanks for replying

    Hi,
to do it really life you need another technology than a "failover cluster". You can use RAC for this.
A failover cluster itself needs to be sure that the stack is down, before bringing it up on the other side. If not this can leed to corruptions... (though Oracle will try to prevent them in most cases)...

  • Using a Fire Wire Switch to Capture 2 Cameras on Same Onlocation Clip

    Greetings,
I'm recording (video) a live event using Onlocation CS5 to an iMac with OS Lion.  I have no problem recording a single camera.  However I have two cameras (but just one computer).  Wondering if I could use a Firewire switch to change cameras while recording to Onlocation during the same clip?  I'd like to just switch between cameras connected to a firewire switch while recording to onlocation (without stopping the recording) - then import into Premeire - to add effects (titing, credits, etc).
You see -  I can't to find a way to record the event from two camera simultaneously onto the iMac (without things getting very expensive).  And Onlocation will only record one camera at a time - since it is a live event I can't afford to miss anything while manually unplugging one camera and restarting recording from another angle in Onlocation  - so I figured I could simply switch back and forth between two angles (cameras) using a mechanical Firewire switch . . . you get the picture.  Would this switching idea work while recording - or would this cause Onlocation to "zarf-out"?
I realize I could buy a switch and try it out - but before I take this route - I was wondering if anybody had an opinion or experience on whether this would work or not?
Thank you for you thoughts on this.
    Ben

I've had good success by running OL and ScenalyzerLive on the same modest laptop ( see my other posts on this for details) to capture video from more than one camera.  While this method doesn't provide the "live" switching you mention, there is a definite advantage in having the uninterrupted video stream recorded en toto from the separate video feeds.  That allows you to have the convenience of doing the line cut in post with all the editing advantages available to you in fine tuning the edit points, modifying the transitions, and all the other goodies available in the NLE.

  • "Live Tile" Background on Mac

What I'm looking for is a way to have a changing tile background on my laptop and desktop Mac's. What I'm imagining is similar to the "Shifting Tiles" screensaver on the Apple TV. I know I can set the backgrounds to change/rotate on a given interval, but is there a way to have it randomly display pictures in this tiled fashion?
A little clarification, I do NOT mean using the "Tile" option in the photo-view drop down with the other options like "Fit to Screen" or "Stretch to Fit". That's not what I'm talking about. The tile images have anywhere from 5-8 random photo's from iPhoto or another folder and fit together in a jigsaw manner, while changing one every couple of seconds.

  • Help understand Visual Communicator Live Streaming

Up to know I run live streaming through our Steaming server using FMS and Flash Media Live Encoder as we only needed one camera for live video feeds.
We are looking at the ability now to use 2 live cameras and also the ability to snap in pre recorded video during live feeds and also provide lower third titles.
    I am looking at:
    Adobe Visual Communicator 3
    Wirecast 4
    CutFour
All of these provide the possible live switching I need.
I'm at the moment looking at the Trial version of Visual communicator and I am struggling getting my head around a few things.
I can hook up 2 -3 Sony A1 HD cameras in SD no problem and running it though FMS is fine. During test streams clicking on the cameras using the mini switcher is straight forward.
howevr I am struggling to work out how to do the following:
Add prerecorded video clips to Camera 3? ( in the Setup Tab it says " No Camera found - please connect a camera or replace with Photo or video Clip) How do I replace with a Video Clip?
How do I add premade titles, so that during the live feed I can put lower third titles in?
Finally, How do Provide an intro looping video to play before the live feed starts?
    Any instructions would be appreciated

The Apple people probably didn't understand that you wanted a live mix. FCP can't help you there.
MultiCam is an FCP feature "post-switching" multicamera recordings for that live-to-tape look. It is fairly complex, and especially with only two "cameras" you would be muchn better to start off editing them on the timeline.
As for a live switch you need a video switcher. Outside the realm of FCP, but http://bhphoptovideo.com is a great place to do research.
Then if you're really serious you can record both feeds plus optionally the live switched output for further manipulation in FCP or elsewhere.

  • Catalyst switch hangs when connecting via console port

    Hi,
I've just started work for a company - they have no network documentation or knowledge of their current set-up whatsoever.
For the LAN in the office they have Cisco Catalyst WS-C3524-XL switches. But it doesn't seem like these are even configured with an IP address for management purposes.
So, I thought I would connect via a console cable to have a look at their configurations and also to investigate some performance problems some users were having on the LAN.
BUT - when I connected to the console cable, all the switch LEDs stopped flickering happily and went solid and everyone in the office lost their network connectivity! (I wasn't popular!)
Rebooting the switch with the console port still connected had no effect - the LEDs remained solid and there was no network connectivity. However, when I removed my console cable, everything started working again!
Does anyone have any ideas a) what can have caused this and b) how I can resolve this problem and connect to the switches without disrupting all the other users!
Note: I subsequently connected to a spare WS-C3524-XL switch using the same laptop and same console cable without any problems.

    Hi,
    thanks for the response.
no, I can't login to the switch(es) at all. There seems to be no response from hyperterminal at all. (Then I noticed that the LEDs had gone "solid" and that everyone started to complain they had lost network connection!)
Even when I powered off and powered on the switch with the console port still connected, nothing appeared on the hyperterminal screen.
However, as mentioned, I'm able to connect to one of our spare switches using the same settings, same laptop, and same console cable - so I guess that would rule these things out as being the cause?
Its definitely a strange one, especially as it seems to be affecting all 3 of the live switches!

  • How to produce live video

    Hi,
All my amateur news broadcasts are edited after filming. I record my video using a canon 5D mark 2 and a panasonic GH1. I record my audio on an RME fireface UFX. Is there any way I could cut between the camera's  while live and how would I do this?
    Thanks

For the type of camera required you need a camera that has HD-SDI. HMDI is not a solution because of the limited physical length of the cable. Instances of HD-SDI cameras are the Canon XF105/XF305 and the Panasonic 250 and the XDCAM-EX line from Sony.
The Canon XF305 is the only handheld with HD-SDI that is approved by the BBC for HD productions in its default configuration. I highly recomment this camera. It is not up to the C300, but then it is much more affordable.
In addition you need a switcher. B&H Photo is a good place to start: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Live-Switcher/ci/2865/N/4258705338

  • Outputting to live TV

So I'm really impressed with the demo I've been using - I'd like to use the program as a character generator in a live studio situation.
However, the issue I'm having is that VC uses the 2nd "head" of the video card to output its picture. The full screen video from my cameras does not display well - I assume it's some form of either refresh issue or interlacing problem. It looks fine on a computer screen, but the image just doesn't come anywhere near close to "DV quality" once the RGB output is converted to an NTSC standard television.
I suppose my question is, would a souped up graphics card help with this? Or is this just an inherent problem of outputting through RGB instead of - like, through a DV output?
Recording the show to DVD or something is not an option - we broadcast live through an in-house cable system.

Thanks for your reply and links to your site. I would request that you update your recommended equipment pages with detailed information about the capture and output resolution (format) and color depths; in my experiments with to date a half dozen different system classes (CPU/Mobo/Chipset) I have only found one system that works well enough at 720x480 (32-bit color depth) to be usable for video production, but it still experiences an occasional glitch which prevents its use in a professional studio.  I am awaiting delivery of additional hardware for further tests and will update an associated thread with "live switching" in the title as to progress.  Coaxing MS Windows and commodity PC hardware to perform as well as dedicated hardware like Newtek's VT line is not a trivial proposition and may not succeed, but I feel that I am getting close.  I have strong doubts that using firewire for uncompressed analog NTSC input (through a converter) would be acceptable in my application; I am testing a variety of analog capture cards and will soon have results for PCI-X (64-bit) hardware. In addition, I have found that only a few releases of Nvidia drivers provide proper scaling of S-video output and repeatable frame locking for usable (professional) output; no ATI cards so far tested have passed muster, and the only Nvidia card currently qualifying is in fact a PCI card (but I suspect that the equivalent AGP card with the same drivers would also qualify).  The caveat against Quadro cards may need to be re-evaluated, as only certain Quadro cards provide genlock and GPU features designed for video production applications.

  • Can I edit/add graphics and effects to Live footage?

    Ok-
I know most people use FCP to edit, previously captured footage.
But what I'm interested in knowing is something along the lines of:
How does ESPN put graphics on their live footage of a NFL game which is then broadcasted via TV.
    Or
How does the News put graphics over it's live footage?
I know this is a broad topic but can FCP do anything like this?
I have an opportunity to work with a smal scale local video production company that is broadcasting live video footage via the internet but they want to be able to incorporate graphics and some effects into the video.
They already have the production in place and going (camera crew, director monitoring all cameras and footage, equipment, and server) It works really well, But they've never been able to incorporate graphics.
How is this done? Anyone here know? Thanks.

With what are called SWITCHERS...or...some other technological term that I know Zebulun knows what it is called. Since he works in live sports broadcasting. Stuff designed for live TV. Used to be called a Chyron or CG (character Generator)...
I know this is a broad topic but can FCP do anything like this?
Nope...it is a NON-LINEAR editor...NOT a live switcher. Not at all what it is designed for.

  • Live video capture while playing back another video track?

Is it possible to capture live video while another video track is being played back? I would like to do this for multitrack video recording of music: a) record a video track, then b) record a second video track while listening to/watching the first. Exactly like multitrack recording of audio as in Garage Band, but with video.
A similar question was asked here, but I want to avoid manual synchronization. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11712024&#11712024
As an example, there are lots of multitrack videos on youtube, but you can often tell synchronization has been done manually as the audio and video are out of sync (even if only slightly):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2RA0vsZXf8&feature=related
    Many thanks!

I'm not too familiar with video editing (yet), so please forgive me if I've misunderstood your suggestions. I think what I'm talking about would have to be done post (after shooting multiple video tracks?), and couldn't be done with video switching (live switching between multiple video feeds?). Here's a much better example of what I'm trying to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGKErn2Zr88
What it boils down to in my mind is precise synchronization of a new capture with something pre-recorded (be it audio or video). If no software can do this (yet), perhaps there's a way to do it with additional hardware, for example playing video on a monitor while simultaneously recording with a camera, assuming the devices can be synchronized somehow?
    Thanks!

  • RECORDING A LIVE M2P STREAM?

Can FCP2 capture a live m2p stream? I would like to record a live switch in M2P format saving the conversion time later. The event could be as long as 8 hours with a few breaks. I would be using my G4 notebook. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

How do you get the stream? From Internet?
For my experience, QT don't even recognize the .m2p. extension. If you want to open one, you need to change it to .mpg.
The problem I see (I not an expert at all) is that you are trying to capture a stream a live. Is not just a file that you download. FC and QT can do that with certain video codecs (as Shane says) and though certain hardware ports.
I don't know if one of those applications (I've never used then) that capture whatever goes on on the screen could do it.
Probably the PC world is more prepared for that task.

  • Live video solution with VC3?

    Hi,
I'm putting together a live video solution for someone, and looking into Visual Communicator as an option.
Does anyone know if it's possible to take a number of webcam inputs (four, for example) into the computer, record all the streams individually as they are to hard disk, but also live switch the inputs out to a screen?
Most solutions I'm finding can only record the live-switched/edited stream. I need to record them as they are (four separate complete streams) but also output to a projector a live-switched version.
Anyone know is this is possible?
    Thanks,
    S

    Welcome to our community, Steve
While Visual Communicator *MIGHT* be able to do this (and I'll leave that for Rob Z or another to answer) you might investigate a freeware product called Screen Monkey.
Click here to visit the Screen Monkey site
I've been using Screen Monkey quite successfully at the church I attend and volunteer by operating the media PC. Granted, I'm only switching between a single camera feed and PowerPoint presentation, but if you had multiple video streams I believe Screen Monkey would allow you to manage that too.
Screen Monkey won't do anything with recording the separate feeds though. You will likely need another software for that. I might imagine it would severely tax the computer to try and record as many as four webcam feeds. But one possibility is to connect multiple computers with each having its own video feed and recording and feed their outputs into the main computer where you are operating the live show.
Cheers and best of luck to you! Rick
