Livecycle OCR

im still newbie with livecycle.want to ask simple question.please help.
1. form -> print -> fill(handwriting) -> scan -> save to DB.
- question:
-> can livecycle ES handle the prosses?
-> in scan prosess, can livecycle ES get the value from field that filled by hand?
thanx before

You can integrate OCR and scanning into LiveCycle. Generally you would get the OCR software to read the image, extract the data, and invoke a LiveCycle process using the data. You can invoke the process in multiple ways, such as dropping the data into a "watch folder".
LiveCycle's strengths, however, are when you move your customers to filling in forms electronically rather than by hand.

  • Creating OCR from LiveCycle PDFs

When trying to OCR from Livecycle PDFS, I understand they are part of the designer suite for Adobe products and that they contain “interactive” forms and business information that usually contain sensitive information such as PII / PCA data.  I’m told that no OCR product works against these types of PDFS while in the interactive mode.  And, that in order to make these type of documents searchable they must be TIFF’d and then OCR’d.  However, I’m also told that there are only a few products that can TIFF these documents.  At this time, I’m told that only LAW can TIFF successfully, but it’s a manual process.  If you have any thoughts on this, please share.

I think you were told incorrectly.  You can take an interactive form and generate a fully rendered PDF that would be indexed by whatever indexing system you're using.  There is no need to go to TIFF and then ocr.

  • "Recognize Text Using OCR" Option Grayed Out in Acrobat 9 Pro (9.5.1)

Running Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.  I'm working with electronically filed court documents.  I regularly use the OCR tool (Document -> OCR Text Recognition -> Recognize Text Using OCR...) on these court documents.
Problem is, every once in awhile, I'll run into a document where the "Recognize Text Using OCR" option is inexplicably grayed out.  I have no idea what is causing this.  I have checked the Document Properties and confirmed there are no security restrictions for the document.  It happens inconsistently, in that OCR will work with a document filed by an attorney in one case, but it won't work in the same kind of document filed by the same attorney in a different case.
Any help getting OCR to work on these few rogue documents is appreciated!

Form created with LiveCycle Designer are XML forms in a PDF wrapper and many of the usual PDF properties are not available. This is like embedded rich media in a PDF. If you want to research this, Adobe and ISO have the PDF Reference manual available as a free download.

  • Add Button in Acrobat 9 Pro to Livecycle Document.

    Hello everyone,
I have a problem that I am beating my head up against. In my company we have some pdf documents that have been created using LiveCycle for our "go green paperless movement" but we have hit a snag. We have some "virtual printers" in use with our document management software that work just as normal networked printers but instead capture an image of the document being printed and run OCR on our documents for record keeping. Each pdf document has its own virtual printer to recognize appropriate OCR templates to use. Therefor we have many virutal pritners for our many documents. We love our LiveCycle documents but, when attempting to use javascript to print to a particular network printer we have found our complication. We do not want to map the printers using windows or train our employees on adding network printers to their profile as there are so many and each document is assigned to a virtual OCR printer, we want the document to have an embedded button that automatically prints to it's assigned virtual printer.
If I open a document and edit it with Acrobat 9 Pro, I can simply place a button field and add this java code:
    var  pp=this.getPrintParams();
    pp.interactive=pp.constants.interactionLevel.automatic;
    pp.printerName="\\\\TOSHIBABILLING2\\pcl6";
    this.print(pp);
and the system prints to the network printer perfectly. Yet if I use that same javascript in LiveCycle we get nothing. Further reading I found some details specifying that I cannot use this same scripting to print to the network printer using LiveCycle and such am at a loss.
I have tried open the form in Acrobat 9 Pro to edit it and just add the button using Acrobat Pro, but each time I edit the document it opens LiveCycle as the designer.
I was not sure which forum to use as this problem has been found between working with both programs. Can someone help me to either modify the code for LiveCycle, or to at least find a way to open the document in Acrobat 9 Pro to just add the print button to the LiveCycle form. Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    ~ Max

I can't open the Form Tools though is what I'm saying. When I open the document in Acrobat 9 Pro I have no form tools.
I have to go to [Forms] -> [Edit Forms in Designer] in order to open the form tools.
Only when I select to open in designer I do not get the Acrobat Pro Designer, it automatically opens the document in LiveCycle and I have no option or ability to change the document designer to Acrobat Pro.
Is there some way I can "Force" the docement to open in Acrobat 9 Pro designer JUST so I can add the print button?

  • 'page size' and OCR

Is there any way to shrink the 'page size' of a PDF? I have a couple of very high-res PDF documents of 17th C books that I would like to run OCR on, but I get an error message that 'page size' is greater than 45 in.  The original documents would have maybe 12in by 9in. I have the full CS5 suite, so I could use other applications if that is what is required. Thanks.

Go to the AdminUI ( http://<servername>:<port>/adminui ), and to Services, PDF Generator.  Pick File Type Settings, and click on the Standard entry.  If you pop open the HTML to PDF section, you can edit the size, margins, orientation, headings and footers, site recursion, and pdf initial view settings.  <br /><br />Save your settings as a new Filetype (you can make as many as you want), and pass the name the filetype as the second parameter to the call to the htmlToPDF method on the web service client.<br /><br />http://livedocs.adobe.com/livecycle/es/sdkHelp/programmer/javadoc/com/adobe/livecycle/g eneratepdf/client/GeneratePdfServiceClient.html<br /><br />I am unfamiliar with interacting directly with the web services via SOAP, so if you are not using the pre-built GeneratePdfServiceClient supplied by Adobe and this information does not solve your issue you will need to see if anybody else can help.  I imagine that there is a similar String parameter where you place the Filetype name defined in the AdminUI.<br /><br />(edit: I should mention, the GeneratePdf service is a part of PDF Generator ES, not Output ES, so you may have better luck in the general Livecycle ES forum)

  • Automation of OCR and text extraction possible in Acrobat 9?

    Hi,
I need to know whether I can use Acrobat 9, on Windows, in the following way.
I have an application running. It has a set of image files and image-only PDFs, and sends a request to Acrobat to OCR them, and produce a text-searchable PDF, and also produce a text file of the text content, and save these to paths also supplied by the application. This should all be done without any user input, so there shouldn't be any windows popping up wanting response - or, the program should be able to detect if such a window has come up, and deal with it itself.
Is this feasible? I would hopefully be coding in C or Ruby.
It would also be nice to be able to ask Acrobat whether a given PDF is already text-searchable or not, although this is not essential.
    Thanks,
    Farmer.

Well, since the actual use of Acrobat for their purposes will be very limited, another option might be as follows:
They install acrobat on a couple of computers in the office. I write a simple plugin for Acrobat to perform the above processing on a Desktop. Whenever there is a set of documents needing to be converted (as described above), one of the people with Acrobat runs the plugin on the documents, then sends the processed files to the server. (Though maybe I don't need to write a plugin? I remember seeing that Acrobat does do batch processing itself anyway.)
Does this sound reasonable? I have looked at the on-line description of LiveCycle PDF Generator but it seems to have a lot of extra stuff that's not necessary for my situation, and seems that it will be much more expensive.

  • Can LiveCycle do all of what I need?

I wish to build a website where (only) authorized persons submit forms electronically via a Windows PC.  The information in these forms must then be automatically placed into a spreadsheet, and viewed on our website, without additional webmaster intervention.  We plan to restrict the download of our forms and website access by password.  I know some of the following are features of LiveCycle, but some features don’t seem to work when other features are enabled.
I know this a big newbie post, and if this isn’t the correct forum, please let me know.
Any help with these 18 issues would be greatly appreciated.   Greg – Cleveland  Ohio area.
    1.    Forms are to be submitted to the website by authorized persons using a name and password.
    2.    Forms must be dynamic.
    3.    The forms will have a field for the submitter’s own comments.
    4.    The data from each form must be kept together on a horizontal line on a table.  (Data will be name, address ,phone etc., with many fields being checked yes/no, a few with numbers, and a few fields provided for comments.  The data must be searchable by field. There will be no calculations or totals of the data.
    5.    All completed forms should be able to be automatically archived on our website (.tiff?)  and able to be printed and downloaded by authorized visitors to our website in case comments are made.  (Would this also be possible if a scanned form is submitted?)
    6.    The website/software must allow the viewer access (only as determined by his log-in and password) to all the forms matching the zip code(s) they are registered for.  (After signing in, they may use a “ENTER SITE NOW” link that will search for and display only forms and tables from specific zip codes.)
    7.    The user cannot change any form fields, but they should be able to add notes or flag data for the next time they log on to our website.
    8.    Data may be viewed on our website with the option to be downloaded to their PC for local archiving and printing.
    9.    Self owned, controlled and managed on my secure server.
    10.                       Information must be secure.
    11.                       Digital signatures will be required.
    12.                       The site must provide the authorized user form data in both a spreadsheet view and the original completed form-image.
    13.                       Each field must be searchable, returning each form with that search request, and displayed in a table.
    14.                       Forms will be downloadable from our website (unless e-mailing them is automated and triggered by the user’s request).
Optional website features, but very desirable:
    15.                       Ideally, paper forms will also be able to be used.  The user would scan the completed paper form, convert it using OCR, and then submit it electronically for automatic loading into the website’s spreadsheet(s).   Possible?
    16.                       The website should not show blank fields when the form’s data table is viewed online.
    17.                       Ideally, the website will accept forms completed and submitted using a PDA or iPhone device. Doable?
    18.                       Barcode scanning may be desirable, in the future.
    My questions:
How much of the above is handled by the features found in LiveCycle Designer?
Is there standard “server side programming” I can employ for handling my form data automatically for display on my company website?  Does Adobe provide this service?  Are there Adobe partners you can refer me to that provide their own software for displaying the form data?
Is there any site you can send me to that is already doing what we wish to do on our site?

Hi Greg, I'll try to answer some of your questions in order:
    1.    Forms are to be submitted to the website by authorized persons using a name and password.
-> There are a number of ways you can protect your form and the submission process.  Ideally you would apply a policy to the form so that it could only be accessed by people with the appropriate user name and password.  Alternatively if you don’t want to restrict access to the form and only the submission process you could “protect” the submission process by wrapping the submission process with a user name and password prompt using Web Services to call a back-end process that checks the users credentials before passing the data back.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/rightsmanagement/
    2.    Forms must be dynamic.
-> Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES can create Dynamic forms.  There are plenty of samples in the samples directory of Designer that will demonstrate dynamic forms, i.e.: the additional of new lines / pages / sections in a form.
    3.    The forms will have a field for the submitter’s own comments.
-> You can add a form field dynamically for comments in a dynamic form if you wish.  Just keep in mind that Acrobat commenting is slightly different than adding a field to a form to allow commenting at a specific section in your form.
    4.    The data from each form must be kept together on a horizontal line on a table.  (Data will be name, address ,phone etc., with many fields being checked yes/no, a few with numbers, and a few fields provided for comments.  The data must be searchable by field. There will be no calculations or totals of the data.
-> This depends on how you plan on extracting the data from your form.  There is no direct-to-excel functionality out of the box but you could create a custom component to create the output in whatever format you require.  Adobe LiveCycle Forms will be your starting point (to populate and extract data).
    http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/forms/
    5.    All completed forms should be able to be automatically archived on our website (.tiff?)  and able to be printed and downloaded by authorized visitors to our website in case comments are made.  (Would this also be possible if a scanned form is submitted?)
-> Adobe LiveCycle Output could do PDF to TIFF conversion or alternatively PDF/A output for long term archival.
    6.    The website/software must allow the viewer access (only as determined by his log-in and password) to all the forms matching the zip code(s) they are registered for.  (After signing in, they may use a “ENTER SITE NOW” link that will search for and display only forms and tables from specific zip codes.)
-> This would be a customization to Workspace http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/es/customizeworkspaceui.pdf or the creation of your own Web UI.
    7.    The user cannot change any form fields, but they should be able to add notes or flag data for the next time they log on to our website.
-> In this case I would suggest “flattening” the forms and then Reader Extending them so that they cannot be modified but commenting can be added with the free Adobe Reader.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/readerextensions/
    8.    Data may be viewed on our website with the option to be downloaded to their PC for local archiving and printing.
-> Again, LiveCycle Forms can be used to extract the data, it’s up to you on how it is published.
    9.    Self owned, controlled and managed on my secure server.
-> LiveCycle is a server-based product.  Check the compatibility matrix for server support options.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/products/enterprise/knowledgecenter/softcomp2_0_1.pdf
    10.                       Information must be secure.
-> Data can be secured within the PDF and transmitted by secure means.
    11.                       Digital signatures will be required.
-> Digital Signatures can be applied to a Reader Extended form using the free Adobe Reader and verified on the back end using  LC Digital Signatures.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/digitalsignatures/
    12.                       The site must provide the authorized user form data in both a spreadsheet view and the original completed form-image.
-> This would be a custom UI.  Using iFrames would probably give you the view you're looking for (ie: inside browser view of both spreadsheet and form).
    13.                       Each field must be searchable, returning each form with that search request, and displayed in a table.
-> If you don’t already have a repository and search capability in-house then you can add on Content Services.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/contentservices/
    14.                       Forms will be downloadable from our website (unless e-mailing them is automated and triggered by the user’s request).
-> This can be done through Workspace for credential-carrying customers or simply provide the PDF’s as you would an HTML page.
Optional website features, but very desirable:
    15.                       Ideally, paper forms will also be able to be used.  The user would scan the completed paper form, convert it using OCR, and then submit it electronically for automatic loading into the website’s spreadsheet(s).   Possible?
-> Check out Barcoded Forms.  This is the ideal paper to digital solution.  Forms filled-in and then printed may get a decent OCR rate though, not 100% like you would get with Barcoded Forms.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/barcodedforms/
    16.                       The website should not show blank fields when the form’s data table is viewed online.
    -> Again, your custom UI.
    17.                       Ideally, the website will accept forms completed and submitted using a PDA or iPhone device. Doable?
-> Adobe LiveCycle Forms can render the same forms designed with Designer in PDF or HTML format (not many people know this).
    http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/forms/features.html
    18.                      Barcode scanning may be desirable, in the future.
-> The decoder provided with Adobe LiveCycle Barcoded Forms does provide you with 1D and 2D decoding capabilities.  This can be used to route forms and of course, decode data from 2D barcoded forms.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Recognize Text Using OCR from DLL

    Hi:
We are a service company, working on a project we need to do OCR on PDF files: convert a PDF to a searchable PDF.
The customer has licenses for Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended.
The problem we have to solve it: from a JSP page, run an applet and to have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended for use the funcionality "Recognize Text Using OCR" on a PDF file.
Ideally, we would be able to access a DLL and invoke this functionality, it is possible?
If not, what would be the way to access this functionality: IAC? Plug-In?
    Would greatly appreciate any help.
    Thank you very much.

    > LiveCycle ES includes lots of PDF functionality that you can use from various APIs.
I tended to associate the term "LiveCycle" with the newfangled (XML-based) way to handle forms, but it has become clear that LiveCycle is much more than a new Forms paradigm.
It sounds like the LiveCycle SDK/Library can be used as a (full?) replacement for the original APDFL.
Is there a table somewhere with the differences between those two SDKs?

Is there way in LiveCycle PDFGenerator to convert and ocr a scanned document on Czech or Slovak language setting?
I installed the Adobe Acrobat 8.1.1 Pro and LiveCycle for JBoss using Turnkey + SP1b on Windows Server 2003.

    hi Igor
    did you solve this problem?
I met a same problem in Korean environment.
If you solved this problem, could you advice me how to solve it?
    Thanks in advanced

  • No OCR parameter in "File Type Settings"

The following knowledge base article suggests that there used to be an "Use OCR" parameter in the"File Type Settings" of LiveCycle PDF Generator:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402622.html
Where is this feature now located?
I want to do OCR on full page sized TIFF images or PDFs with page filling TIFF images embedded.
The output format should be PDF.
I am running a TRIAL of "LiveCycle Enterprise Suite 2" Service Pack 2 Version 9.0.0.2.20100902.2.246889 including

take ABBYY OCR SDK in combination with iText pdf SDK. The Abbyy OCR  delivers by dfar better quality - especially dewarping-

  • Automate OCR process through some API

Is there a way in which PDF 'OCR'ing' can be done on the server programmatically. We require this to make user submitted PDF's searchable in our .Net online solution.

Hmmm, just chatted with a Adobe sales rep for more info about LiveCycle and looks like "it is not a good solution when you need to use only such a small subset of its abilities" as he put it , OCR in this case.

  • OCR API

We have a license for LiveCycle, but I'm trying to find documentation regarding the OCR capabilities that Adobe has.
The goal is as follows: to create a service that receives a file (image or pdf), runs OCR on it and then returns the text within. If it was a PDF passed in then it would be nice to return a PDF with the newly derived text embedded within the PDF.
I guess I want to know:
    - Does Adobe have an API for me to use (most likely from C#) that will allow me to OCR a PDF/image?
    - If Adobe does OCR, can it embed the derived text?
    - Where can I find documentation/examples to do any of this?
    Thanks!

You can use Acrobat in an automated service as long as it's licensed properly.  You mention you have a license of LiveCycle but don't mention which components.  If you have PDF/G it does have an API and does provide the ability to OCR an image and can return the resulting text of the scanned document.  The API documentation is located here http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/10.0/ProgramLC/javadoc/

  • How to OCR the PDF?

    Hi,
using LiveCycle service how to ocr the PDF??.. Please give the link to do OCR the PDF using Livecycle. The programming language is asp.net & C#.
    Regards,
    R.Balajiprasad

To clarify a bit they need to have Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader. Reader has not been associated with the Acrobat name for 3 or more versions. The process you are asking about is a creation process - the purpose of Acrobat - and NOT a reading feature.

  • Error while invoking Livecycle process with Java

    Hi,
I am trying to invoke a short lived process using java code. But when i try doing that i get the following error
cannot access class com.adobe.idp.dsc.clientsdk.ServiceClient; class file has wrong version 49.0, should be 45.3 or 46.0 or 47.0 or 48.0.
I am using the following versions:
    Adobe Livecycle: 9.0
    java version "1.5.0_03"
    JDeveloper: 9.0.5.2
Can some one please suggest the appropriate action i need to take so that i can compile the code.
    Thanks in advance

If you are invoking LiveCycle ES2 on JBoss compile with JDK 1.6 and run against JRE 6.
