LiveType to DVD Studio Menu

I am working on a project that needs to have some text that looks like it is being typed on papyrus and scrolls up the screen on the DVD menu. The DVD contains standard definition NTSC video and the DVD menu in question is set to "Letterbox Pan & Scan".
I have a project that does what I need in Livetype and the previews looks very nice, but when the DVD menu is simulated or built the text looks pretty blocks.
What are the best settings in Livetype/DVD Studio Pro to get this scrolling text to look sharp on the final menu? OR is this a pipe dream? And if so, any suggestions on a better method to achieve this effect with Final Cut Studio?
Thanks,
Sean

I have DVD Studio pointing straight to the IPR file and have burnt the project to dvd, but while most of it looks great, the scrolling text is really very unsatisfactory.< </div>
In theory, your method should yield the best possible image. But "blocky" still doesn't tell me much about your objections. It's difficult to know where to tell you to start looking for a solution and you've probably tried these: Try to render the animation in an FCP timeline and export that movie back to DVDSP. Or you can force it to render out of LT and use the Animation codec movie in DVDSP.

  • Bad quality in DVD studio menu page

Need some help I notice that my menus on DVD studio pro are very low quality my video itself quality is excellent while watching the DVD on my regular DVD player

For your Tracks you want MPEG-2 video. But if you use that identical video in a DropZone on your Menu, the quality will be awful. Why? Because on a DVD the Menu is one single video that fills the TV screen. It might look like 3 or 4, etc videos on a background, but it is really just one. Now since DVDs use MPEG-2 video only, and MPEG-2 is uneditable, what happens behinds the sceeen is that DVD SP takes all the MPEG-2 videos on your menu, converts them to QuickTime. Then it combines them all into one single video. Then it compresses it all back to MPEG-2. Compressing compressed video always results in a loss in quality.
So in order to get better video, in FCP you should make 30 second clips of video you want to use, and export out QuickTime movies. Do not compress to MPEG-2. Just bring them into DVD SP and put them in your DropZones.
If you want to get the best video you can, create the entire Menu in FCP (or Motion, or After Effects). Now you have the entire screen as one video, and DVD SP doesn't have to do anything with it.

  • DVD Studio menu problem

    Hi Guys,
I have seen lots of questions all over the net about this issue with no definitive answer as yet. I have always accepted slightly soft or pixellated menu images and text when creating in DVD studio pro but I now have a client breathing down my neck demanding sharp text and overlay images. I have tried .psd files, creating text over tiff, jpeg and png bckgrounds at 300dpi and creating loopable video in FCP to import as a menu background. Nothing works. There is always some element of the menu, usually text added within DVD Studio, that looks bad in normal state and especially bad when in selected state.
Please help. I just want crisp menu pages!

I have found I have had similiar problems with DVD studio pro. Pixelatted text. As you have tried PSD's png, jpegs etc, to my knowledge you are running out of answers.
I have always successfully created sharp text DVD menus with After Effects.
Here's a great tutorial is not familiar -:

  • Livetype titles as buttons for DVD Studio Pro 4

made a title in Live Type that I want to use a button in DVD Studio Pro 4. Is there a tutorial, or can anyone tell me exactly what I have to do to import it and make it a button in DVDSP 4? When I try to import it and drop it on a menu, the button is small but the surrounding button box is big. When I try and make the letters bigger, the button box gets bigger as well.
All I want is to make just the letters bigger and not the whole surrounding box.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance

    That's not funny.
No one posted because you can easily find the answer yourself in the DVDSP manual. Creating buttons for DVD menus is a complex operation if you want it to be. LiveType by itself is not appropriate for the task. LT will create some embelishments and animated fluff that you can use to augment the buttons you make in DVDSP. Scaling imported assets is covered extensively, if undecipherably, in the DVDSP manual.

  • Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4 built SD video file - Menu 1 screen is WHITE!!

I recently upgraded from FCP 4.5 with DVD Studio Pro 3 to FCS with DVD Studio 4. I have resolved a number of problems with the upgrade by reading "Apply Discussions", however, I need help with the following: When I import my mpeg2 and AC3 files into DVD SP4, I use the DVD SP4 palette to select an Apple Template for my MENU 1. (I like the "Theater Interior" menu template.) When I view the final product with the DVD SP4 simulator, everything is great including the colors in MENU 1. So, I build my program onto my desktop, the same way I did when I had DVD SP3. Now, the problem begins. When I view the built video TS file on my G5 Apple DVD player, or format it to a standard DVD-R with my pioneer 106D burner and play it back on my in-house DVD player, when the program MENU 1 is displayed on the monitor, it is WHITE in color. The menu is set to times out in 20 seconds. Once that happens, the programs runs perfectly. However, what's with the white menu screen? I can barely make out the buttons. When I click on a button, it operates and the color and program work perfectly from that point. I there an option to get rid of the white screen when the menu comes up? Somehow, when DVD SP4 builds the video file, MENU 1 is encoding with a white background rather than with the colors of the Apple template in use. This did not happen with DVD SP3. Can you help me?
    Ugene

try switching the menu encoding from software to hardware (or vice versa) in your DVDSP preferences and see if that makes a difference for you.

  • LiveType Credit Roll Text Blurry Shaking in DVD Studio Pro Completed SD

I first created text scrolling directly from inside FCP. The texts appear shaking/blurry in the exported MOV. After trying different font family/size but still getting the same bad result, I did more research. I then created the credit roll in LiveType, imported that into FCP. This time, the exported finished MOV looks great on computer. I thought this is the right fix but after I got everything done in DVD Studio Pro and burned a SD to test on my 50" screen SONY, the credit roll part is again shaking and blurry!! This really drove me nuts!! Well, other texts that I created both in FCP and LiveType appear just fine!! I am trying to export the credit roll texts part as self-contained mov then import back to FCP but really suspect this will fix the problem.
That part of rolling credit texts were shaking in DVD Pro simulation but I thought that's only becuase it was not the final product. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
p.s. I spent the past few hours googling and tried different methods but still had no luck...:(
    Thanks in advance!

Ok...I just export a MOV with ONLY the credit roll encoded using QuickTime conversion, change the compression type to Uncompressed 8-Bit 4:2:2 which was supposed to retain the graphic/text quality better than normal setting. The completed credit roll still look shaking, however. It's white text on black, yeah I know not the best combo but there must be a way to get the text to not shake/blur...no?
    Please help, if anyone could.
    Many thanks...

  • 50% grey mask over menu in DVD Studio Pro

    Hi everyone,
I have created a new menu onto an existing DVD project. The new menu has a 50% haze over it, something like a mask. I can temporarily get rid if it if I go to VIEW / DISPLAY STATUS / BACKGROUND but after the next operation it goes back to the mask. I've compared its settings to other menus on the same project and they are the same. I've also taken the project to another computer with DVD Studio Pro and the same issues occurs.
If some could suggest a solution I'd be very grateful.

Drew, if you send them back when they guess wrong without letting them select 4 times they'll be able to figure out the code through process of elimination pretty quick...
A typical method for this is to add one to a register on the correct button press. After the 4th if the register equals 4 goto the secret stuff and if not go to the begining (clear registers) and start again or to another asset saying failed or whatever...
    Not too complex.
    Code: 1, 3, 5, 0
Menu1: All buttons link to Menu2 except button 1 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to menu2.
Menu2: All buttons link to Menu3 except button 3 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to menu3.
Menu3: All buttons link to Menu4 except button 5 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to menu4.
Menu4: All buttons link to a check register value script except button 0 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to the check register script,
The check register script just needs to check the register value, send users where they are allowed to go and make sure you clear the register somewhere,

  • DVD studio pro menu

Are you able to create a dvd style menu for a cd project that plays video from DVD studio pro?

I really don't understand your question.

  • DVD Studio: 1st-Play menu buttons not "clickable" ...

    hi Folks,
Using DVD Studio Pro 4.1.2 ... creating my first complex build; I have one "first play" menu,
offering 3 choices (via buttons), that lead to 2 sub-menu's or a 1st track choice.
I embedded a 5-min audio clip to play behind the "1st-play" menu, which I did get to work.
When I simulate the compilation, all buttons on all menus work fine.
When I burned the compilation to DVD, none of the 3 buttons on my first play
menu worked.  None seem "clickable" while the music plays, hovering over
any with the mouse did not change the shape of the pointer, as is is expected.
Is there something in the playing of music that might be screwing up the
    linking ability of the button?
Seems that once the music stopped, I could somehow get into one of the sub-menu's
playing the DVD on my iMac, playing it on a PC, nothing worked.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    thanks

Tried Gary's suggestion, dropped in a 3-second black movie (.mov, rendered in FCE - not a graphic) for the 'first-play' menu, which is set to jump the 'main' menu with the 3 choices and the music in the background.  It gets to the 2nd menu, but the 2nd menu buttons are also not clickable (again) in the final burn.  They ARE in the simulation.
a little frustrated by my Mac world on this one, I sent my AC3 & M2V streams over to my PC - but these files - at least the M2V portions,(rendered by compressor) are not readable and bring up arcane error messages in both my DVD authoring programs on the PC (DVD Architect Studio & DVD Lab Pro).   That's a different game altogether, though.
anyway, still wasting DVDs and no answer yet..
    thanks for all attempts ...

  • How to import DVD Studio Pro Menu into Motion?

I would like to change the colors of one of the templates in DVD Studio Pro. In particular the .psd menu file. Is there a way to import the .psd file into Motion and change the color. Or maybe there is an easier way of doing this. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can. You can import a Motion project file directly into DVD Studio Pro, though when I tried it took a loooooong time (depends on the size and complexity of the project of course). Here's a tutorial on how to do that:
    http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-use-dvd-studio-pro-4-with-motion-53426/
OR... you can just export your Motion project and import it into DVD SP as a Quicktime file, and put that in the Menu section. Then you can add your buttons and so forth and proceed from there.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Dvd Studio Pro crashes whenever usuing a menu using motion video

Im using DVD Studio Pro 2 on a G5. Whenever I try to burn using either a menu template containing video or use a drop zone containing video, the software crashes.
I always use m2V video and ac3 audio created in FC4. Have tried usuing an existing file asset as my target with duration time set as well as separate imported files as the target. All imported assets are in the same folder
On burn, when it gets to the menu containing the video it crashes. If I remove the video from the menu its a smooth burn.
    Any suggestions wouldbe greatly appreciated.

The same problem as Chad's happens to me when running the Chapter 6 tutorial in the Apple Pro Training Series (APTS) book for Motion 3: if you try to set the imported Motion project as a DVDSP background, DVDSP will crash every time.
Max Average's advice is 100% good with the downside being that you lose your ability to roundtrip. If you export your Motion DVD menu project as a standalone QT movie, it will drop in fine and still retains the loop point (a marker preset within Motion). Exporting with the Lossless+Alpha codec gave me the best image in the DVDSP simulator (over Animation+Alpha, Uncompressed 10-bit, and ProRes HQ).
I find roundtripping between FCS2 apps is a hit and miss affair and, generally, just export everything.

  • Creating a menu and overlay from Motion to DVD Studio Pro

I have created a menu in Motion. My menu plays a short video first before the menu choices come up. After sending it to DVD Studio Pro I noticed that when I burned it I could not access the menu options with my DVD player, only when I played it on my computer and used a mouse.
I tried creating an overlay and using that, but because my buttons do not display right away I am seeing one of the overlay icons right from the beginning.
If there is anyone out there with a suggestions on how I can fix this or create it differently so that I don't have these problems, please let me know!!!

Couple of things, first you need to make sure you assign navigation for the buttons, which is why the remote control on the DVD Player did not work, yet you can mouse over in the computer [Assign Navigation|http://dvdstepbystep.com/buttons07.php] and [a thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9134310&#9134310]
As to overlays, buttons will not appear (the highlights) until the loop point of the menu, but if ellements are in the background (video) then they will appear. If you do not want those items (in the background) to appear to the loop point you need to fade it in or otherwise do whatever effect you want in the background video. • Layered Menu like Apple's DVD Studio Pro

I'm trying to find out if you can create layered menu's like you can in DVD Studio Pro?  I don't want to use highlights or subpicture, but a rollover image created in Photoshop.

Yes, you can create layered menus.
I find doing it in Photoshop best.

  • EyeTV markers as menu buttons in DVD Studio Pro?

As I am still pondering on buying or not DVD Studio Pro, I would like to know, whether the markers that I can apply to EyeTV recordings are maintained when I export the mpeg2 program stream for further use in DVD Studio Pro. When I export for Toast Titanium, Toast creates image menu buttons, but I cannot add any title or text to the button.
