Living in a Widows World

I am using a G4 Mirror Door. I put two QuickTime movies, One video and the other a slide show on my web page. It works fine on my computer, but some students cannot get it to work on their PC. Could someone look a d listen to my QuickTime on a PC and tell me if it works properly.

The page code (the html stuff) needs the object tags and all of the other (classID etc) items to "turn on" the ActiveX features in Internet Explorer. Since you don't know what the viewer is using when they visit your page all the tags are critical.
To make the .mov file more "compatible" with older versions of QuickTime (Mac or PC) I suggest your purchase the "Pro" upgrade of QuickTime.
It will allow you to "export" the movie file and apply different codecs (the compressor de-compressor that reduces file size).
I suggest Sorenson Video 3 (for the video track) and QDesign Music 2 (for the sound track). You could also use some of the "canned" preset choices to reduce the file size.
I don't know what version of the Mac OS you're using. QuickTime 7 (the only Mac version that still allows upgrade to Pro) requires 10.3.9 or Tiger.
If you're still using an older OS you may want to ask one of your Mac or PC using friends to help with the file conversion. No need to throw a lot of money into this if it's just a few movie files.

    Ok the skinny...
Mac guy, window environment. I have gotten all networked in can see everyone share files etc...
On my windbloz machine I have internet access we do have to go through a Webmarshal application I believe.
When I hook my macbook pro up as I mentioned everything but I can't get to the internet?!
Any thoughts. I don't want to pressure the IT dept too much for I working towards intergration with my mac. So you know the "Windows" folks very keep it tight to the vest.
    Help if you can...

WebMarshal is a monitoring proxy server. Apparently all of your company's internet access goes through it (and may be logged or blocked)
You need to either talk to your network admin, or go through ALL of the network settings on your PC and figure out the Mac equivalents.
If your company uses Active Directory you may be stuck unless IT is willing to help.

  • WIFI Packet Loss/Jitter MacBook Air 11 & LION OSX 10.7.1

I started using computers more than 30 years ago when I was 5, I had my first IBM PC at the age of 10 and have never had any interest in paying over the odds for an Apple mac mainly because I saw the Mac as a kind of "Can't open nothing", one mouse buttoned retard of the computer world.
    That is, until now.
I set up an online business 3 years ago and rented a dedicated server and set the whole business up in a cloud, so to speak. Having done that, all I needed a laptop for was a remote desktop connection and to run a SIP phone (Internet phone).
My PC based laptops had almost nothing installed on them, and I wasn't using software on the laptop itself, I was using remote desktop, so - why not try a MAC? The new Macbook Air 11 is small, light and made of metal and glass so should be robust enough to travel with me.
I have to say, this was the worst move I've ever made.
I opened the new shiny macbook and the first thing I noticed was that the internet seemed hit and miss. Moving around the room I managed to find a spot whereby pages woud load quickly. Strange, my £200 acer laptop was sh.t fast everywhere in the house. No matter, I packed it back away and carried on working on the Windows machine.
I've come to Newquay this week, and i've started to try and use the Macbook again in a hotel. The wireless signal in the room is low, and speedtest shows about 1 meg down and 3/4 meg up. That may sound bad to you, but remote desktop uses about 5k/sec (modem dial up speed) and the softphone, well, my Asterisk VOIP setup is confugured to use the GSM codec so that's 8k/sec each way + overheads.
This whole setup was deliberately designed to be "thin" so I can travel with ease and work on bad connections like USB internet sticks.
Anyhow, the Macbook was unable to hold a stable connection to the remote desktop or SIP phone, even though the speed test showed a whopping 1 meg up and down. What you may not be aware of is that there is more to a connection than the speed, there is the quality as well. How many packets are lost / how much "jitter" is on the line.
Anyhow, we're not living in the 3rd world, I ran a PINGTEST and it showed a small amount of jitter but told me the line was class B, online games may suffer but voip should be fine.
I unpacked the Acer, placed it in exactly the same spot as the Apple had sat in and it worked beautifully with 1 bar of wireless signal, all day long. Phone calls were clear.
So you know now what I'm thinking. I'm sitting here with my £200 acer because I can't use the £1500 macbook air 11. I paid nearly sixteen hundred pounds for this piece of .... and it doesn't ...... work. Time to contact Apple support.
    2nd Mistake!
Representitive 1: - Told me that I can't compare the Macbook Air to the Acer, the Acer has Google Chrome and everybody knows Google Chrome is the fastest browser. I was told there was nothing more he could do, its probably a bad line at the hotel. When I explained the Acer works fine for voip I was told well, maybe it is getting a better signal. I explained the Acer has the cheapest possible parts inside it and paid 1500 for this macbook, expecting it to have quality parts inside and was told I'd paid for the size, because its so small but its not considered "powerful". Apple do you train your staff? Clearly not.
Thank god I wasn't paying to talk to this moron.
Representitive 2: - Had no idea what packet loss or Jitter was, got me to do a speedtest and said that looks fine. Then he got me to remove the WIFI adapter and re add it in the network settings.

Representitive 3: - Still not really understanding "quality" issues with the networking interface, I was asked to install the latest Java client. I did it, only because I wanted to comply with Apples wishes so they'd help me, but they weren't helping and Java has nothing to do with the network adapter, so that was useless advice too.
Apple seem to have no idea there is a problem, even though Google has pages and pages of people saying the same as me, and their own discussion forums have thousands of people complaining https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2664670?start=0&tstart=0
Finally, late yesterday whilst speaking to d.ck head number 3 at Apple support, we found a forum post talking about a fix, 10.7.1 update. I told d. head number 3 about the update and he suggested I applied it. So I did and everything looked great, for a whole evening.
This morning, I switched on again and the same thing, slow remote desktop, choppy unusable phone. Remember the phone needs less than 20k for a conversation, thats 0.2 meg. Speedtest again showing a whole meg both ways.
I called apple support again, this time being a little forceful, and I've asked for this to be escalated, but the bottom line is - they have no fix, they don't aknowledge this as a problem and I was told LION is new, so maybe it's got a bug..
I told the guy on the phone this is a network driver issue, the intermittency of the problem shows that and the Apple's lack of settings for the network adapter means the unit is autonegotiating with the router and choosing speed and duplex settings on its own. Sometimes it does that correctly, other times not and the connection although fast has a lot of noise / packet loss / corruption.
I've found a workaround, you put the unit to sleep and wake it up again and it runs fast until the next shutdown. Not really acceptable seeing as I was paying for "the cream of the crop".
I will definately not be recommending Apple products, and i'll certainly not be replacing the Windows laptops in my business with Apple's toytown system- i'd go out of business if I had to rely on this.
All there is left now, is to look at Boot camp and see if I can wipe this waste of space linux hack from the unit and install Windows 7.

  • How do I go about cancelling my BT contract due to...

I joined BT in December 2012 when I moved home. I have had to move again and gave a weeks notice that I would like my service transferred to my new address, was told that my services will stop the night before my move and that my phone service at the new address will become effective by midnight the day I move and that an engineer would be sent out to re-install my infinity broadband but this was the start of frustration for me. My phone line did n ot work, there was no TV for the children and no internet access. I made calls from my mobile with the hope of resolving this immediately but was passed from pillar to post, told to perform some magic on a 'dead phone line' as it appears they found it difficult understanding what my call was about.
managed to speak with a lady few days aftwerwards who promised heaven, stating my phone line would start working midnight the day I spoke with her but this was not the case and then I had to call again to explain and express my frustration. Spoke with a guy who apologised and said my phone line would start working midninght but this did not happen until very late the next day so this meant we were in the new house without phone, tv and broadband...the children must have been pleased. Anyway i have made millions of calls to BT trying to resolve this. An engineer was called out to fix the problem and my husband had to take time off work which meant loss of income for 'a problem not fixed' as the Engineer disgracefully sadid he had only been told to fix the broadband but his visit made things worse, or was it a 'coincidence' as my phone line now went DEAD!!! for several days, with yet more calls made to BT without any joy. wrtitten to the CEO without any response.
I must have asked and spoken to about 20 staff but all with empty promises and most did not appear to be helpful. I was promised call backs at times which seldom happens but all giving and cancelling appointment dates. We have now being inb this house for 3 weeks and 3 days and I have had enough and would like to cancel my contract as BT as they are definitely in breach of the contract as I have had to take time of work (I am a Nurse) to wait at home for their 'Invisible Engineers' and now I have no more patience as the children can't really surf the internet as the 'free WiFi given cuts out every now and then and my daughter who is applying to the Universities is getting frustrated every day and this is taking its toll on us. I am now at home today 9/9/13 and waiting for an Engineer to turn uo between 1-6pm to fix this probelm. Plkease tell me, do I have enough grounds to 'Finish off with BT if this guy does not turn up today? I feel like I am living in the 3rd world country with no TV and proper internet for 3 weeks', thank God the phone line is working now. Any advice will do as I have had enough.

  • What is Apple doing to fix iPhone app failure

This problem looks like a bad MS conflict error... One of the biggest reasons I got away from PC.
I have a new (now 4 days old as of this posting) 3G iPhone with all updates. It has been registered with Apple and synced with my iTunes. I have loaded free apps on my iPhone with the reasoning being that if the free apps don't work, I surly will not buy an app from the designer of a non working free app.
I have done the reset and reboot, which "some" of the apps did work fine. But all, non standard iPhone apps, crash on startup following a sync section with iTunes.
Without claiming to be a programer or even a technician, it appears that the cause of the down loaded app failure stems from the sync with iTunes and maybe poor app design. Anyone from the PC world will recognize this as a "conflict error".
At the iPhone introduction Keynote address, I feel Steve Jobs lead me to believe that is would not happen with the 3rd party development of apps. It's just not the "Apple" way. I maybe wrong in that it is not an actual "conflict error" but something else, still, it is not what I have come to expect from Apple and hope that this problem is not a sign of the future with Apple. It also appears that better "quality assurance" is needed with app development and iPhone syncing.
    My question is:
What, if anything, is Apple doing to solve this massive problem with downloaded apps and the iPhone and syncing with iTunes?
If someone could show me a link with an Apple reply to solving this problem besides reset/reboot/reload I would be a little more confident in knowing that I didn't waste good money and "TIME" in getting the iPhone.
This boot-reboot, reset, wipe it clean approach is not good, to much like living in the MS world, not Apple.

Going to the local Apple store this morning...
My problem is not uncommon as the board is showing signs of this happening to many others as well. That is where I found the restore and reboot information to try to solve the issue of crashing apps.
I understand that Apple will not "give away the cow", but letting iPhone users know that the problems they are having are being addressed by Apple is a little more comforting than nothing at all. Other wise, all the apps in world are useless and even more importantly worthless, if a person has to reset/reboot/reload just to get them to work.
IF Apple can not address the basic problems with todays iPhone apps, why should one believe that the iPhone 3.0 OS is any better? Using a PC comparison, which is better, XP or Vista. If the current iPhone OS of 2.2. what ever is not working that well (as related to down loaded apps and iTunes), will OS 3.0 be any better?
The waste of time I refer to is in going to the apps store and downloading the apps... Again why by apps if the free version does not work?

  • My touchpad just randomely stopped working and i dont know why? can someone please help me.

i was using a plug in mouse and now i cant use my touchpad even when the mouse is unplugged. i have a hp pavillion gseries. can someone please help me, i dont like carrying a mouse around with me everywhere i take my laptop.

Well, if you updated to 8.2, then you are living in a different world than the rest of us. 8.1 was just released on Monday.
Do you not have an iCloud or iTunes backup that you can restore to? Have you not been importing your photos to a photo library on your computer?
Maybe you could start from the beginning and we can see if we can help. If you had to restore your device, and you have absolutely no backups, then, I'm afraid you are out of luck. However, if you have backups, or if you have been importing your photos on a regular basis, then probably most of your stuff can be recovered.

  • New hard drive and Windows 7 issues

I bought a new 1 Tetra Samsung hard drive for my computer since 150GB was not enough. I did this because I need windows partitioned for school. After I installed the hard drive and inserted the Mac OS disk, it would not recognize the hard drive to install. Since then, I have read previous forums such as: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3322843?start=0&tstart=0
Now, the issue is: I went ahead and installed my Windows XP SP2 because I could not get Mac OS to install. I have also downloaded the Windows 7 Professional update from Microsoft and have a Operating Disk on its way in the mail. I am having some issues with sound and camera and probably others that I don't know about yet, like my graphics card and such. What should I do?
    1. Erase HD and install the Mac OS, because I do want this on my computer. Then download updates for Windows 7 bootcamp and reinstall Windows 7 when I get it in the mail.
    or,
    2. Is there a way to fix the driver issues that I am having without having to reinstall windows. I have not tried to partition yet and install mac.
I think it would be best to:
    Install Mac OS
    Download updates
    Bootcamp and Install Windows 7
What do you think and do you have any advice as how I should go about this. Oh, btw, living in a PC world and coming home to my Macbook Pro 3,1 and realizing that it is not as functional is kinda disappointing.
So, I found this site for the sound: http://www.stuffedcow.net/macbook_audio
    And: http://www.cirrus.com/en/products/cs4207.html
I am not sure how to go about installing a new driver. Do I download and save or do I run a certain .exe?
I found this post and was reading, but I am not certain about the right driver for the sound. If I erase the hard drive and install mac. Then, bootcamp and install windows, will I loose my wifi driver? Windows 7 should have that update, but according to this post, it may not.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2534313

If I were in your shoes I would want to understand why I couldn't install OSX on the internal drive before going any further. Without getting past that hurdle you may or may not be successful in your aims, but you are outside mainstream intended ways of running Bootcamp.
    Just a couple of starters:-
    1. Is your internal hard drive (samsung) formatted with a GUID partition table and HFS+ file system? All done in Disk Utility, booted from the Install disk.
    2. The Apple Install disk (plus subsequent Apple Software Updates) has all the drivers Bootcamp needs, without having to find and download from elsewhere. I run Windows 7 64 bit on two Macs and have never had to go and find a driver. (Of course Windows does it automatically for me for other hardware). Sorry if this next point is insultingly obvious, but just to check that you know you can put the Apple Install Disk in while running Windows and Windows find the installer.
You don't say anything what your MBP is or what version of OSX you are running. I am not fully up to date with the inplications of Lion and Bootcamp drivers as there is no install disk. I believe 2011 MBPs won't run XP.
Your comment "Oh, btw, living in a PC world and coming home to my Macbook Pro 3,1 and realizing that it is not as functional is kinda disappointing" implies that you haven't had a Mac very long. Although Macs are easy to pick up and use, there is a LOT to learn about customisation and using it properly and getting the most out of them. I have a number of relatives who still use OSX "out of the box"....it's like driving a car in first gear, and complaining "this car doesn't go very fast". Not a perfect analogy as speed is not the issue here.
Sorry if some of this post is missing the target...just take on board the bits that apply.

  • Panasonic Lumex DMC-LX1 raw conversion for Aperture doesn't work.

I've seen many people having raw conversion problems. Direct import of Lumex raw files to Aperture does not work.
Adobe DNG conversion of raw to dng does not work.
    I'm running on Photoshop CS.
Perhaps my DNG conversion settings aren't right? Tell me what they should be.
Do I have to go as far as changing the raw.plist or whatever it's called.
Would CS2 with the Raw conversion Plug-in work instead?

    Joe,
good to see that you are reading these posts. I am sure that many users whose cameras' raw files are currently not supported by Aperture would love to help out in any way they can.
However, as we are living in a converging world, why doesn't Apple talk with Adobe and share some of the information used for RAW conversion? I'm thinking dcraw which (according to a note in its source code*) is using data provided by Adobe... and that same data is also contained in the Raw.plist.
Thus, if Adobe knows something and shares it with dcraw, and Apple uses some of the dcraw code (at least the m2 matrices found in Raw.plist are equal to the dcraw ones), why can't you guys all share the same information, and thus speed up RAW support for all cameras?
    Just a thought.
    Kindest regards,

One way to deal with it would be to set up a filter to delete any mail that had contents like this one.
For example, if you created a filter that deleted any mail that had the words "polskich ktrzy" in the message, you could be fairly confident you wouldn't lose anything important.
This assumes that the contents of the mail is actual text and not an image of text.

  • Soft/Weak References: rule of thumbs?

After reading <a target="extern" href="http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/ALT/RefObj/index.html">Reference Objects and Garbage Collection</a> i browsed my code and replaced my listener containers with versions that store WeakReference objects. The main idea is to avoid memory leaks by storing references to objects that are not needed anymore (the listener container is the only strong reference left).
Another rule is to use SoftReferences for caches. But I haven't figured out a good way of implementing it (for caches that fill itself with one single SQL statement).
Are there any other examples where it's good advice to use Soft/Weak References?

For listeners, you have to make sure that the listener object is hard referenced - which is usually the case. After you release the listener object from the main application/object/thread, because it's finished or you don't need it anymore, the listener holder should not hold on to such references to avoid OutOfMemoryExceptions. Of course, the best way is always to unregister a listener, but unfortunately, we're not living in a perfect world. No listener is forced to unregister, they can simple forget to unregister. For this reason, it's better to tell the listener: if you register yourself, you should know that you are just referenced via WeakReferences. If the listener suddenly doesn't get listener events, this is a coding error which can be traced and fixed. But if a listener forgets to unregister itself, the resulting memory bloat is much harder to trace.
SQL table caches are difficult. On one hand you want to cache the data, on the other, you want to free this cache memory (temporarily) for more important memory usage. It's always a trade off between 2 advantages. If performance is not the big issue, but you get OutOfMemoryExceptions, then this is critical for the application to continue working. Better a little slower than not at all ... ;-)

  • BUCKET LIST FOR VERIZON....

HEY VERIZON.. Here is  BUCKET LIST...
    1. Fix the Server Bugs... always getting server busy
2 Allow you to delete all your recordings at once.. not 10 at a time.. it takes forever
3 Be able to time activate and unactivate  your Modes for Camera Recordings.  If I am home it would be great to just turn off that mode.. not have to delete it and then rebuild it..insane.
4 LET US SEE WHAT WE RECORDED... I currently have 40 pages of recordings.. and i cannot view 1 of them.... it is a great idea.... but flexibility and reliability are just not up to snuff..
If I did not catch someone breaking into my house with this system.. then I would throw it in the trash... WAY to much time spent trying to get to the recordings.. IF they are viewable... WAY to much time deleting old recordings... just WAY to much time to invest... this system should work in the background.. keep my home safe.. and not eat up my time talking to Customer Service... oh after waiting 15 minutes on hold...   IT could be really great... could be.. buy it is not..

I feel like you are living in my Verizon world too...same thing - almost everyday.  I am about to throw it all in the mail and demand my $$ back - have had the system since February and what a headache it has been.
This morning I see tons of activity - recordings in the activity but of course they are not even showing up in my recordings and the ones that are there - I cannot view.
Someone needs to do something FAST.  I bought this system for some sort of security - and now if there is a motion detection at 2 in the morning - I cannot even see what it was!!

  • Safari is basically useless for me

Safari (ver 5.0.6) is just about useless to me on my main computer. Sure, it’s an older “Quicksilver” Power  Mac G4 @ 1.47 GHz w/ 1 GB RAM but I don’t use it for much more than managing my iTunes & iPhoto Libraries, email & web surfing – which I can’t do anymore on this computer because of constant Safari crashes. (The Libraries are on 2 internal & 1 external 250 GB drives, with an external 1 TB drive for backups.) Other than that it’s perfectly suitable for my needs – I’m not a “power user”. (Safari on my even older “Sawtooth” Power Mac G4 in the basement works just fine for web surfing, but it’s a pain to have to run downstairs to do this.) Safari works fine on my Intel MacBook & MacBook Pro, but again, I’d like to be able to use Safari on the computer that manages all the other stuff.
So here’s the problem – whenever I go to a web site with a lot of visual content – embedded videos and Flash stuff – if I scroll down too fast, or basically at all (while all that content is “loading”), I get the “spinning beach ball of death” and Safari crashes. I can’t find any consistency in the “crash logs” other than the “exception type” and “exception codes”, and the “crashed thread” could be any number. Here’s 3 recent examples -

It would seem that all crashes involve “com.apple.CoreGraphics” and “com.apple.QuartzCore” along with a few other things.
Now I’ve done all the basics – all software updates that are available for this machine and for Safari have be downloaded. Disk “permissions” have been repaired multiple times, “zap PRAM” multiple times – even uninstalled/reinstalled Safari, but no “love” from these efforts. I’m thinking that maybe there’s a file or process that’s external to Safari, but that Safari makes “calls” to, that is corrupt. In the Widows world there’s stuff like this – “normal.dot” in MS Word comes to mind – that one can rename or delete, and the application will rebuild a new one upon launch if it doesn’t find it. On the other hand, since the problem seems to be associated with rendering graphics on the display maybe it’s a hardware issue with the video card? (An ATI Radeon 9200 card.)
Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. Otherwise I’ll just bring the old “Sawtooth” Power Mac G4 up from the basement and reconfigure it use my libraries.
    Thanks in advance,
    Robert
Note: Safari crashed on me just trying to get to post this - an old version of the Camino browser is the only way I can get around on the internet on this computer at this point!

Although I would still like to know what exactly was causing Safari to crash all the time (so if anyone else wants to chime in here...) I'm more than grateful to have a functioning browser again - thanks for the suggestion! I was totally unaware that this existed, and I'm happy to see that some folks are out there providing support for folks still using older PPC Mac's - like myself. I would recommend this browser as a solution for other folks who might be having the same issues with Safari as I was, but with this one "heads up" - cookies are disabled by default on the browser, but some sites - like these Apple Discussions - don't like that. The Apple site doesn't give you any feedback as to why you're still a "guest" after logging in with your ID & password, but my work web mail site did when I tried to login. After enabling cookies I was able to login to both sites with no problems.
    Again, thanks for the tip!

  • Dissapointed with Airplay performance...

Last than a year since becoming a MAC guy and I guess this will be the first time I'm dissapointed with an Apple product… MBA mid 2011, Mountain Lion OS and Apple TV 3, the mirroring function sounded so great since I had to hook a long HDMI cable across the room to watch movies on my computer. Everything went well considering I payed US$180 for it down here in Brazil (that's the price you pay for living in this third world country!) Anyway, installation went smooth, to get the best of it I used a LAN cabe to connect the Apple TV to the G network router… Now the fall offs:
    - Image quality much worst than the HDMI cable, I can live with that and that's the price you pay for been wireless.
    - The remote control is useless on mirror mode, can not pause or control anything, I expected to be able to at least pause what I'm watching and not having to do it on my MBA.
    - An annoying bug, after Apple TV goes to sleep… I can either wake it up via remote control or the mirror icon o MBA, but the thing is it will not stream audio, video only and sound keeps coming out of the MBA speaker, so I have to manually restart the Apple TV, after that audio and video stream works normally. Very annoying to have to do it every use! No matter how many times I enable or disable the Airplay only after the Apple TV reset it I can get audio to work….

i was watching my processors (all 4 of them), and notice the same thing. i'm using FCP 5 on a quad g5 and x-raid.
only 1 processor is at 100%, and the others 20%, while rendering in FCP.
i'm really really disappointed to learn that FCP doesn't even come close to using all available power, especially when i bought this computer to use FCP. And even worse that its apple software running on all apple hardware, so it should use all the power it can.
i hope apple does something about this, soon.

  • Locating the iPhoto Library exclusively on an external or NAS HDD

I have been successful doing this with iTunes. Is it possible with iPhoto?
The ideal scenario would be locating the iPhoto library on an external NAS on my network which would be accessible via Mac (and yes, PC - sorry - not living in a perfect world, yet).
Thanks in advance and sorry to all if this is the 100th time this question has been asked.

    scott
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
No it is not the 100th time - more like 250th time
1- the iPhoto library must be on a Mac OS extended (journaled) format disk which can not be accessed by a PC
2 - iPhoto has no cross platform capability
3 - iPhoto does not support a multiuser environment so even with multiple Macs sharing a single library you have to be very careful not to cause problems
4 - You can (although there are significant drawbacks) have iPhoto reference the original photos on a NAS but the PC users will not see edits made by iPhoto and iPhoto will not reflect any changes made in the originals by another computer - this is possible but not recommended
5 - iPhoto is a relational database program using an SQL database and it must have total control of the content and structure of its database (as any relational data base must have)
6 - You need a profession DIgital Asset Management program (DAM) to do what you want effectively

  • Objects how they fit together?

So how important are objects from day one and howcome books dont encourage thier use from the start?
Reason I ask is as I am making a phonebook application should I be making a class for example getPersonalDetails and then save that and reuse it for possibly and address book? Also do you create methods as you go along and must you import a whole class everytime you need it or is it sometimes better to code an internal method if you only need one? Is the concept of OOP to break everything down to its smallest part?
An example would be if my phone book needed a name surname home work cell details then I code a GetDetails class that has methods for getting all those details. But possibly an adress book might only be using 2 of those methods to get name and surname so should i make internal methods or create a object of that class to access those methods that are already coded?
I guess I am trying to ask if you always reuse or if it is preferable to create a new internal method at times?

If I am teaching someone who is completely new to programming how to code in Java, I would not start out by immediately introducing Objects. Teaching a student about variables, assignments, program control flow, functions, primitive structures, editing program files, manual compiling, and the fundamental nature of what a program is should come first, IMHO. I've been convinced of this by teaching experience in which I have seen programming novices absolutely ruined and completely lost in the material 2 months in because the teachers thought a head-first plunge into OOP was the best way to start.I respectfully disagree. Complete beginners to programming are not wired to think like computers. But living in the real world, objects make sense to them. Teaching them what an object is, and how objects interact with one another, is a very beginner-friendly task. Have beginners create a Car object with fields like "year" and "model", and methods like getYear() and they'll have easily accomplished a first program. Then show them how to make a loop that creates multiple cars, or use an If statement to look for a specific car. You'll get more people hooked into programming if the first tasks give positive reinforcement, versus the arduous task of walking a beginner through debugging his for loop on day 1.
But I guess that's all dependent on whether you want there to be more programmers, or if you want to weed out those who aren't immediately committed on the first day. It's quite true that OOP has a lot of fertile ground for a student to relate to. Objects and classes can be understood relatively easily even by novices. Unfortunately, a lot of instructors seem to then go right ahead into inheritance, interfaces, polymorphism, and all manner of complicated concepts before a student even knows how to write a loop. Despite favoring the Java language a great deal, I'm particularly disdainful of "Java shops" for this reason, because the product is often a student who has no mastery at all of the basics, and ends up struggling greatly. I'm not sure what's so horribly arduous about building a for loop versus building an object, and I consider a for loop to be more of a fundamental skill to programming in general.
I favor introducing "objects" and "classes" early, but not immediately.
