LMS 3.0 to Prime 1.1/LMS 4.2 migration

Hello,
A customer is asking to upgrade their LMS 3.0 to Prime 1.1.  However, the customer or their previous system's integrator never actually installed LMS 3.0.  The licensing and PAK were never used as well.  My question is, can I still use the migration top level part # R-PI-1.1-UP-K9 to upgrade LMS 3.0 to Prime 1.1 because there was no licensing ever installed?  How would the migration of the current licensing work with the new licensing PAK if that is the case?  Or does the customer have to purchase a fresh Prime 1.1 licensing (top level part # R-PI-1.1-K9) because LMS 3.0 was never installed?
Kind regards,
Chad

As long as Cisco ordering validates that the customer has a LMS 3.0 license, they will allow the upgrade SKU to be ordered. It doesn't matter if it was ever installed or used.
They should go with Prime 1.2 (LMS 4.2 component) vs 1.1

  • Prime LMS 4.2 to Prime Infrastructure 2.0 license migration

A couple of months ago I upgraded WCS to Prime Infrastructure (WCS via NCS to PI 1.2 at that time). Meanwhile PI is running version 2.0. For some reason, when purchasing the upgrade licenses, I also got a 500 device LMS4.2 upgrade license.
    The exact part numbers were:
R-W-PI12-M-K9 WCS 7.0 to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 Migration
R-PI12-BASE-K9 Prime Infrastructure 1.2 Base License and Software
    L-PI12-LF-500-LIC Prime Infrastructure 1.2 - Lifecycle - 500 Device Lic PAK
L-PILMS42-500-M Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2 - 500 Device Upgrade Lic
I have a virtual LMS appliance running where I installed the 500 device license I mentioned. I've actually never used LMS but that's a different story...
As I'm running low on PI device licenses (lifecycle licenses to be precise), the question is:
Is there an officially supported scenario to migrate these 500 LMS 4.2 licenses (that are already the result of a license upgrade) to PI 2.0?
If so: what part numbers do I need to purchase? I suppose I need
R-L-PI2X-U-K9 LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.x Upgrade
    plus
(L-L-PI2X-500-U LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.x Lifecycle Upgrade 500 Device)
    XOR
(L-L-PI2X-500-UP LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.x Lifecycle Upgrade with PASS 500 Device)
Maybe someone can comment on that... thanks in advance.

In case anyone is facing the same issue:
Meanwhile, I finished the upgrade process using the following part numbers:

  • LMS 4.0 and Prime Infrastructure..!

    Hi,
I am using LMS 4.0 and as the licenses got expired I came to know that I need to buy Prime Infrastructure license as LMS 4.0 reached End of life.
So now if I buy the prime infrastructure licenses, will it work on LMS 4.0 or I need to upgrade? and how can I get the upgrade?
    Thanks..!

You would need to upgrade.  Prime Infrastructure 1.2 has LMS and WAN buildt in.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Prime LMS 4.2 Vs Prime Infrastructure 2

    Hi All,
I am working on a project and was looking for a better solution for doing the monitoring of their Cisco network. The environment comprises of around 350+ Wired devices and couple of AP and wireless controllers.  They currently use Cisco Wireless CS solution.
While analysing, i saw that cisco is coming up with Infra 2.0 and it is projected as replacement solution for LMS going forward.
Is it better to go with infrastructure 2.0 instead of LMS 4.2 considering that this project may last for another  3+ years ?
I am looking for some expert openion from the experts in this forum..
    Skr.

Have a look at the comparison guide posted here.
Right now,  there are still a couple of things you cannot do with PI 2.0 that you can with LMS 4.2. Cisco projects more things will be rolled into PI 2.1, but then that remains to be seen. Early 2014 is the latest projection I've heard for that.
One upside is the license for LMS is still included with new PI purchases based on this feature gap. So you can cover your bets and use PI 2.0 for wireless management (getting all the heritage and capability of WCS / NCS) while using LMS (with the CiscoWorks functionality and large knowledge base and documentation set built-in) for wired management. It's a bit messy to run two systems and they have do be on separate hosts (or VMs) but that gives you the broadest functionality right now.
Going forward, PI is where the Cisco developers will be working - i.e. we won't see an LMS 5.0 (or maybe even 4.3, TBD). All the new features will be developed for PI; so there's that to consider as well.
The problem I see is that even if PI 2.1 closes the feature gap completely, there's still not going to be the knowledge base for a while getting all the tips and tricks figured out. The PI 2.0 documentation, for example, while an improvement over 1.x, still falls way short of that provided for LMS - by an order of magnitude in my estimation.

  • Getting the Error - unable to acquire LMS API while running in a SABA LMS

I have seen this post before in the forum, but the solution is usually pretty simple.  The person is trying to run a project published for a SCORM 1.2 LMS off of their desk top or some other location not connected to an LMS.  But in this case, my project is packaged to run on a SCORM 1.2 LMS and this error is occurring within the LMS when the course launches.  You can click on the "OK" button in the error dialog box and the course runs - although as the LMS administrator points out - the course also does not bookmark.  I think maybe a connection?  Has anyone encountered this?  This is Captivate 8 running in IE off of a SABA LMS. In accordance with the LMS admin, it is packaged for SCORM 1.2. Thanks for any help!

First good troubleshooting step to testing these sorts of API/LMS issues is to test the package in another LMS.
The most common suggestion is SCORM Cloud:
Scorm Cloud SCORM Cloud - A simpler way to deliver e-learning - SCORM
Or an LMS with free trial accounts, perhaps:
Inquisiq R4 - Learning Management System
Whichever tool, does your package still have the same issues with those other LMS?
If so, something is likely indeed wrong with the package.
If not, then the issue is likely with the Saba LMS.
In general, issues like this are often related to framesets. CP should search the browser windows for the API. If it can't find it, something may be interfering with that API 'hunt'.
Many LMS products log such communication so you can trace the errors. Ask you Saba Admin if there's any log/trace available you could examine?

  • Upgrade Cisco Prime LMS 4.0 to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.1

My company has asked me to migrate Prime LMS 4.0 to Prime Infrastructure 2.0 for a client and can not find the guide, the questions are? the migration is possible without an intermediate step? and There is a guide to update LMS 4.0 to PI 2.0 ??
    Thanks in advance.

Prime LMS 4.2.2 added support for the PI template directly:
    Export Data for Prime Infrastructure
Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution supports data migration to Prime Infrastructure 1.2. This feature enables user to export the Device Credentials Repository (DCR) data from LMS 4.2.x versions to Prime Infrastructure 1.2. The data backup status and backup location are displayed at the bottom of the Export Data for Prime Infrastructure page. The data being exported from LMS and the data imported back to PI are listed as follows.
    Data exported from LMS
    •Device Credentials Repository (DCR)
    •Software Image Management
    •Config Archive
    •Change Audit
    •Syslog

  • WCS and LMS to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 Upgrade

    Hello,
Our customer is currently having WCS for 500 devices and LMS 3.2 for 1500 devices. We are planning to upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3.
I want to check is the upgrade procedure that we have planned is ok or we have missed something.
Phase 1: WCS to CPI 1.3 upgrade
    1. Check that WCS is at 7.0.230.0  version
    2. Export WCS database
    3. Install NCS 1.1.1.24 software
    4. Contact cisco to obtain trial license for NCS software (L-WCS-NCS1-M-K9 license).
    5. Migrate WCS license and import it in NCS software
    6. Migrate WCS data to NCS software using ncs migrate command
    7. Patch NCS software
    8. Inline upgrade to CPI 1.3 software
    9. Install proper licenses on CPI 1.3 (WCS and LMS device count)
My concern in this first phase is should I use NCS large image since our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 software should manage 2000 devices at the end.
Or is it better not to perform inline upgrade and insted go with exporting data from NCS and then importing them to CPI 1.3 that is going to be installed separately?
Phase 2: LMS 3.2 to CPI upgrade
    1. Export LMS 3.2 database
    2. Install LMS 4.2 software
    3. Install license to LMS 4.2
    4. Restore data from LMS 3.2 to LMS 4.2
    5. Direct upgrade from LMS 4.2 to 4.2.2
    6. Export the device list with credentials from LMS 4.2.2  and import it as a Bulk Import in CPI 1.3
At the end we will have CPI 1.3 and LMS 4.2.2 software running.
Is it possible to directly upgrade from LMS 4.2 to LMS 4.2.4 and then import data to CPI 1.3 or we need to go with 4.2.2 version?

Are this errors going to affect our LMS 4.2 operations?
Then we have upgraded to LMS 4.2.2 and exported data and credentiales for PI import.
On PI 1.3 we have installed WCS 500 devices upgrade license and LMS 1500 upgrade license and now we are having 2000 devices lifecycle license. We have successfully restored WCS data in PI and we have imported LMS devices as bulk import. What is strange is that we have this message in prime regarding licensing:
On LMS 3.2 our customer had saved unlimited number of configuration versioning. After upgrading to LMS 4.2 we can only see last 3 configurations regardless of unlimided number of configurations in previous LMS, so my question is where can we find older configurations in LMS 4.2?
We are planning to turn unlimited versioning on CPI 1.3 now, so our customer will again have feature that they need. Do you have some experiance regarding disk space when all device configurations are stored forever?
    Thank you for your help.

  • LMS 4.1 (Windows) & NCS 1.1 (VM) Upgrade to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2

    Hi All,
Im getting a bit confused about the whole upgrade migration process for the following config to Cisco Prime Infrastructure:
    LMS - Version 4.1 , 500 devices. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1
    NCS – version 1.1 , 50 devices  Red Hat Linux ( 64 Bit)  (Installation software - NCS-VA-1.0.1.4-small.ova)
I want to be able to backup databases and migrate licensing from LMS and NCS to one platform. Does anyone have experience of this and could possible guide me thorugh this process. LMS has SAS and NCS has SAU.
Help will be very much appreciated!!

It's a couple of steps but can be done. You may want to reconsider getting off of LMS since the latest Prime Infrastructure (PI 1.2) does not have full feature compatibility with the latest LMS (4.2.3). Have a look here for the comparison.
If you still want to do it:
    1. Upgrade your NCS to PI 1.2 (instructions). If you're going with a total of 550 devices on a combined license you should use the medium ova file to get the correct server resource allocation. You will need to get the new license from the TAC or via the licensing portal. I'm not sure if you can get the PI license for your LMS upgrade directly via the portal but you do have the entitlement for LMS 4.2 and PI 1.2 (combined licenses not to exceed the original LMS number) if your SAS is current. You may need to contact the TAC and ask for the licensing team.
    2. Upgrade your LMS to 4.2 and patch it to 4.2.2 (instructions). Once you've done that, there is a simple menu command to export your device credentials to Prime (Admin, System, Export Data to PI in LMS and then Operation, Device Work Center, Bulk Import in PI - instruction on Page 18 here). Do that and then in the new PI installation import the devices.
Verify everything is working and you can decommission the LMS server.

  • LMS PRIME 4.2 integrating with ACS 4.2

    Hello,
    i would like to integrate new lms prime 4.2 with acs.4.2 . .. !!
is there document or user guide for this version of lms?
    Thanks in advance.
    Marwan

IN LMS 4.2 there is nothing which is known as Integration (like LMS 3.x), since it added feature RBAC.
Now ACS can just be used as PAM to have ciscoworks authenticated for Tacacs+ or Radius. After the auth is done, you should have a authorization set in LMS locally for user, else it will be given a default HELP DESK access.

SOme of the similar discussion happened here, which would be helpful.
    To answer your questions :
A.> Yes all three of them are separate software.
LMS :--> Ciscoworks Prime LMS is about to be end-of-life software which will phase out in favour of its successor Cisco Prime Infrastructure. This Software was the key application from Cisco to help manage the entire Wired Infrastructure for cisco devices, like Routers, switches, VPN, FW's, etc.
NCS:--> Wireless Control System (WCS) was the LMS equivalent software to manage Cisco's wireless infrastructure. It evolved as a new Generation Network Control System (NCS).
Cisco Prime Infrastructure :--> Cisco felt market demand to have a unified experience to manage both Wired and Wireless Infrastructure, hence Cisco Prime Infrastructure was introduced which is NCS+LMS. Not all features of LMS are migrated, hence customer's are allowed to use LMS latest version 4.2.x for wired network devices, if required.
B.> Prime is now provided with an inbaked Linux kernel to remove dependency from Windows or Unix (Solaris) OS, hence it is only available as OVA deployment image to be used under virtualized environment and can take benefit of virtualized infrastructure.

  • Understanding licenses/PAK - LMS/Prime Infrastructure.

    Hi,
I purchased an upgrade LMS 3.2 to Prime Infrastructure 1.2 and one more license for 300 devices.
I received 6 differents PAK numbers for:
    Cisco Systens - R-PI12-UP-K9
    L-PI12-LF-300-LIC - Prime Infrastructure 1.2 - Lifecycle - 300 Device Lic PAK
    L-PILMS42-300-U - Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2 - 300 Device Maj Upg Lic
R-PI12-BASE-K9 - Prime Infrastructure 1,2 Base License and Software
    Cisco Systens - R-PI12-K9
    L-PI12-LF-100-LIC - Prime Infrastructure 1.2 - Lifecycle - 100 Device Lic PAK
    L-PILMS42-100 - Prime Infrastructure LMS 4.2 - 100 Device Base Lic
R-PI12-BASE-K9 - Prime Infrastructure 1,2 Base License and Software
I'll need to download 6 .lic files and install all?
    Thanks.

PI and LMS are both entitled products with your upgrade. You may install one, the other or both (but on separate hosts).
When you install either, you will need to use your Product Authorization Keys (PAKs) to download two license files - one for the base 100 devices and another for the 300 devices. You will need to do this separately for each product.

You'd get a lot more views for this question on the Network Management forum.
In any case, PI 1.2 (2.0 is the curent version) is the product Cisco is positioning for wireless (successor to WCS and NCS) and wired (successor to LMS) infrastructure management. However it hasn't yet reached feature parity with LMS so they are including licenses for customers to continue to use both if they so desire. The products are mutually exclusive and must be run on separate servers.
Please refer to the following pages for more info:
Whitepapers including PI-LMS functional comparison and PI Deployment Guide

Also search youtube for Cisco Prime. There is a series of VODs the product team did on use cases.

  • Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 - Do access points use up a node count license?

    Hi Everyone,
I wish to purchase Cisco Prime LMS 4.1, particularly Cisco part # R-LMS-4.1-500-K9 which support 500 Cisco nodes.
We have about 360 Cisco switches/routers/ASA/FWs/WLCs so the 500 nodes license would seem to suffice for now & for future growth.
We also have about 200 lightweight APs that are managed & monitored by our WLC/WCS/Navigator environment.
According to the device support documentation for LMS, it supports and I assume will auto-discover these APs.
Does that mean these APs will use up node licenses on LMS even though management of the APs is done by WLC/WCS?  If so is there an easy way to suppress discovery of APs by LMS so we don’t have to purchase extra node licenses for LMS?  Or, does LMS offer additional support features for wireless APs not already offered by WLC/WCS/Navigator?
Just trying to understand how many network node licenses for LMS I have to purchase.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Ian.

Thanks but I just heard back from my Cisco SE and he assures me that an AP will NOT use up a license.
I've asked him to verify his answer for me.
Is your answer based on real world expereince (the best there is)?  That is, are you running Prime LMS 4.1 and does it indeed use up a license for each light-weight AP it discovers & manages?
Thanks for mentioning options 1-3 but I do not wish to employ any of them.  I don't mind buying the additional licenses for APs ... I just need to know if I have to or not.
    Ian.
