Load balancing / fail over

Dear forum,
Is there an other and more simple / "cheaper" way for load balancing / fail over then using RAC ? E.g. starting more instances againts the (same) database ?
Thanks in advance,
Michel

The answer would be highly platform and version dependent.
On several platforms you have software implementing a 'shared nothing cluster'. This means you failover complete services to a second server, which is usually dormant.
There is HP Service Guard, Suncluster, IBM HACMP, and Microsoft cluster, which are or can be configured as shared nothing clusters.
For Microsoft there was or is, depending on version, Oracle Failsafe, on top of a MS Cluster.
RAC can be configured in a shared nothing mode too. RAC itself is essentially active/active.
On the other side, you can of course buy a second server, and use Dataguard to set up a standby database.
For a physical standby database, which isn't enabled for more than 10 days, you don't pay a license.
Setting up multiple instances on a single server is obviously not going to work. Those instances need to coordinate what they are doing. This is essentially the task of RAC.

  • Load balancing & Fail over with 10g

    Hi all, I understand that 10g offers a framework that allows a web site to run on multiple jvm's, therefore, offering load balancing and failover facilities. I can't find detailed information about this though on Oracle's webSite.
    If you know of any good documentation about this, please let me know.
    Thanks!

  • Cisco 1921 Dual ADSL Load Balancing/Failover?

    Hello,
    We have purchased a Cisco 1921 with twin ADSL after advice from a Cisco sales rep. However I am having trouble working out the load balancing/fail over config for the device.
    I would like traffic to balance over both ADSL lines and if one goes down not to interrupt connectivity.
    I had a look at ppp multilink but I am unsure our ISP (BT) support this?
    This is my current config which I think only one ADSL line is being used. Some input would be appreciated
    Robbie

  • Load Balancing with OSPF and maximum-paths command

    Hello,
    Just a quick query really, we have a disribution layer 3 switch, in its routing table it has 3 default routes all with the same metric from the core router, this is because the core router is setup with the comamnd "default-information originate always metric 50" which obviously proagates the default route around the area and the metric never changes from 50.
    So i have a routing table that looks like this:
    O*E2 0.0.0.0/0 [110/50] via 77.95.176.9, 06:44:51, GigabitEthernet4/9
                   [110/50] via 77.95.176.17, 06:44:51, Vlan903
                   [110/50] via 91.203.72.5, 06:44:51, Vlan262
    Three default routes with the same metric, does this mean that the router IOS will load balance traffic over all three routes evenly?  I mean i have been reading up on it and appartemtly i dont have the command "maximum-paths 3" under my ospf process?
    I have been doing some traceroutes from this switch to the internet (various sites) and all the traffic seems to be going out over the first  route in the table that next hop is 77.95.176.9
    My question is how can i verify that load balancing is taking place, or if its not then i need to add this "maximum-paths 3" command to the ospf on the local switch?  I would say load balancing is not taking place but im sure i have seen traffic from one customer being routes over all 3 paths due to matching spikes on the SNMP sensors?
    Many Thanks.
    Matt

    Yes, your traffic should use all three paths, as Rick notes, OSPF, on Cisco, normally defaults to using up to 4 equal cost paths.
    As Rick also notes mentioning CEF, how actual traffic is forwarded across ECMP can vary.  Often, the device will keep all traffic for the same flow on the same egress port, and attributes selected for actual egress port selection might be deterministic.  I.e. it's possible same traffic flow will always be sent to the same egress port.  (This means even with ECMP, you may not see an equal load distribution.)

              , there's no exception
              but load balancing does not happen. According to the document , there's must load
              balancing when i call home.create() method.
              my client program goes here
                   DBStateful the_ejb1 = (DBStateful) PortableRemoteObject.narrow(home.create(),

                   DBStateful the_ejb2 = (DBStateful) PortableRemoteObject.narrow(home.create(3),

              So how can i get load-balancing and fail over together??

  • Load-balancing and fail-over between web containers and EJB containers

    When web components and EJB components are run in different OC4J instances, can we achieve load-balancing and fail-over between web containers and EJB containers?
    null

    It looks like there is clustering, but not loadbalancing available for rmi
    from the rmi.xml configuration. The application will treat any ejbs on the
    cluster as one-to-one look-ups. Orion will go out and get the first ejb
    available on the cluster. See the docs on configuring rmi.xml (and also the
    note below).
    That is a kind-of failover, because if machine A goes down, and the
    myotherAejbs.jar are on machine B too, orion will go out and get the bean
    from machine B when it can't find machine A. But it doesn't go machine A
    then machine B for each remote instance of the bean. You could also specify
    the maximum number of instances of a bean, and as one machine gets "loaded",
    orion would go to the next available machine...but that's not really
    loadbalancing.
    That is, you can set up your web-apps with ejbs, but let all of the ejbs be
    remote="true" in the orion-application.xml file:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <!DOCTYPE orion-application PUBLIC "-//Evermind//DTD J2EE Application
    runtime 1.2//EN" "http://www.orionserver.com/dtds/orion-application.dtd">
    <orion-application deployment-version="1.5.2">
    <ejb-module remote="true" path="myotherAejbs.jar" />
    <ejb-module remote="true" path="myotherBejbs.jar" />
    <ejb-module remote="true" path="myotherCejbs.jar" />
    &ltweb-module id="mysite" path="mysite.war" />
    ... other stuff ...
    </orion-application>In the rmi.xml you would define your clustering:
    <cluster host="230.0.0.1" id="123" password="123abc" port="9127"
    username="cluster-user" />
    Tag that is defined if the application is to be clustered. Used to set up
    a local multicast cluster. A username and password used for the servers to
    intercommunicate also needs to be specified.
    host - The multicast host/ip to transmit and receive cluster data on. The
    default is 230.0.0.1.
    id - The id (number) of this cluster node to identify itself with in the
    cluster. The default is based on local machine IP.
    password - The password configured for cluster access. Needs to match that
    of the other nodes in the cluster.
    port - The port to transmit and receive cluster data on. The default is
    9127.
    username - The username configured for cluster access. Needs to match that
    of the other nodes in the cluster.

  • VPN device with dual ISP, fail-over, and load balancing

    We currently service a client that has a PIX firewall that connects to multiple, separate outside vendors via IPSEC VPN. The VPN connections are mission critical and if for any reason the VPN device or the internet connection (currently only a T1) goes down, the business goes down too. We're looking for a solution that allows dual-ISP, failover, and load balancing. I see that there are several ASA models as well as the IOS that support this but what I'm confused about is what are the requirements for the other end of the VPN, keeping in mind that the other end will always be an outside vendor and out of our control. Current VPN endpoints for outside vendors are to devices like VPN 3000 Concentrator, Sonicwall, etc. that likely do not support any type of fail-over, trunking, load-balancing. Is this just not possible?

    Unless I am mistaken the ASA doesn't do VPN Load Balancing for point-to-point IPSec connections either. What you're really after is opportunistic connection failover, and/or something like DMVPN. Coordinating opportunistic failover shouldn't be too much of an issue with the partners, but be prepared for lot of questions.

  • Load balancing not happending but fail over is for Read only Entity beans

              The following are the configuration.
              Two NT servers with WL5.1 sp9 having only EJBs(Read only entity beans)
              One Client with WL5.1 sp9 having servlet/java application as
              EJB client.
              I am trying to make a call like findbyprimarykey in one of the
              entity bean. I could see the request is being directed only to the one of the
              server always. When I bring that server, fail over is happening to the other server.
              Here are the settings I have in the ejb-jar.xml :

  • Load Balance Network Cards and Fail over services

    Hi,
    Im looking at setting up 2 MAC server each with basic services (ie AFP, Open Driectory, software updates and DHCP)
    Both servers are less then 12 months old and are both attached with GB ports to the RAID where all the user data is stored.
    My questions is how to I setup the 2 network interface cards to act as one and load balance the traffic accross both interfaces?
    also I was wondering if it was possible to fail over AFP services, so if one server went down the other would pickup file services where it left off?
    I know how to fail over OD and the other services dont matter to much.
    Thanks in advance for your assistance

    My questions is how to I setup the 2 network interface cards to act as one and load balance the traffic accross both interfaces?
    This is simple link aggregation in System Preferences -> Network
    Click the + button at the bottom and choose new Link Aggregate. Choose the existing interfaces (presumably en0 and en1) and you're set.
    Note that this requires support in the switch the server is connected to (it needs to support LACP), and that you will bounce your network connection when you set this up (so don't do it when the server is actively servicing clients)
    also I was wondering if it was possible to fail over AFP services, so if one server went down the other would pickup file services where it left off?
    It's possible, but you need to be very careful with regards to data integrity. For example, typically each server is going to have a local directory (or directories) that are shared. If Server A fails and Server B takes over, how do you intend to ensure that Server B's data is up-to-date, especially with regard to files that might have been in use at the time?
    It's a tricky problem to solve without putting the data on a shared storage device using something like XSAN to manage arbitration, and now you could be talking serious $$$s.
    I'd recommend looking closely at your file serving needs and work out if it's necessary, or whether you could get by with dividing the load across servers (e.g. some sharepoints are on one server, other sharepoints on the other) so that only a subset of your users are impacted should one server fail.
    File synchronization/replication is a major issue (read $$$$$) for a lot of companies.

    Hi MS DEF,
    A second network adapter is required to provide peer-to-peer communication between cluster hosts. Please isolate your heartbeat network. With unicast when cluster is connected
    to a switch, incoming packets are sent to all the ports on the switch, which can cause switch flooding, please confirm you have setup your switch correct, you can refer the following Cisco Switch related unicast configuration.

  • Load balancing is not working correctly during server fail-over

    Hi,
              We have 4 weblogic instances in a cluster with proxy-plugin load balancing the requests. When instance 1 is shutdown, all the subsequent requests from users whose sessions were at instance1 are sent over to instance2 only. They are not divided between instance2, instance3 and instance4.
              Can somebody, please, tell if there is any solution to this so that sessions for users who were being redirected to instance1 will be divided between instances 2,3 and 4.
              Thanks,
              Prasad

    It is not possible because in a cluster server1 always chooses the same secondary server (with some algorithm)
              So all sessions with primaries on server1 will have secondaries on same secondary server.
              So if primary is down, all the requests(that has primaries on server1) will be routed to the same secondary server.

    Hello Bruce !
    CSS is designed to handle TCP- and UDP based traffic, not IPSec. When handling IPSec traffic Content Switching Module (CSM) inside Catalyst 6500 series is recommended for that purpose.

  • SUNW.gds for jboss + Load Balancing Group = Failed to connect to host ...

    Hi all!
    In a simple two node cluster (Solaris cluster 3.2) with quorum server I've created a resource for jboss 5.1.0 using SUNW.gds. It is supposed to be load-balanced. To achieve that I've followed instructions from [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E18728_01/html/821-1258/gds-25.html]
    The command I've used to create the resource was:
    clresource create -g scalable-rg -t SUNW.gds -p resource_dependencies=vip -p Scalable=TRUE -p Start_timeout=400 -p Stop_timeout=400 -p Probe_timeout=30 -p Port_list=8080/tcp -p Start_command="/opt/jboss-5.1.0.GA/bin/run.sh -b 0.0.0.0" -p Child_mon_level=0 -p Failover_enabled=TRUE -p Stop_signal=15 -p Load_balancing_policy=LB_STICKY_WILD jboss-rs
    The whole configuration seems to work, but when the second node joins cluster, resource with jboss can't bind to shared ip address. There are many entries in /var/adm/messages like:
    Jan 19 13:46:35 play SC[,SUNW.gds:6,scalable-rg,jboss-rs,gds_svc_start]: [ID 141062 daemon.error] Failed to connect to host vip and port 8080: Connection refused.

    However, after some time, it finally somehow binds to shared ip and port 8080.
    Is this something I should be worried about? Or it is a normal thing, since e.g. it takes some time to bring the interface with shared ip up? I've never had to install such configuration, and I don't have neither intuiton, nor the experience. Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks a bunch,
    Bart

    Hi, a couple of things to check:
    - did you check that both JBOSS instances were up and running?
    - can you check in the logs (on both nodes) when a message saying something like "service .... registered..." showed up. This should show up for both JBOSS instances. From the time of the second "registered" message, the load balancer should sending incoming requests to both instances using its distribution mechanism
    - did you check the vip address on one of the nodes on an external interface and on lo0 on the other
    - connection refused looks like a server problem; can you connect to the JBOSS instance locally?
