  • 2950 load balancing two Windows 2003 servers

We just purchased two Windows 2003 servers that connect directly to a 2950. They have setup network load balancing on the servers. With this setup both of the servers have the same MAC address cloned to their NICS. This is obviously causing a problem with the ARP table on the 2950. I opened a TAC case, and they said it was a Microsoft problem. The vendor that installed the servers says it the switch. Has anybody ever done this?
    Thanks

    Hello,
I think you would speak about "MAC address table" and not "ARP table" for your 2950 switch. It's typically a trouble known by Microsoft and describe here :

  • Network Load balancing for Server 2003 and Server 2012

Our environment currently has 2 web servers running Windows Server 2003 with Network Load Balancing.  We are looking to update the servers to Windows Server 2012.  Is it possible to add Windows Server 2012 into the Windows Server 2003 Network Load
balancing cluster?  This way we could bring up 2 new servers add them into the network load balancing and then take out the 2003 servers without disrupting our production.
Any thoughts or suggestions on how to make this work properly?

    Hi,
You can upgrade an existing Network Load Balancing (NLB) cluster to Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012 by taking the entire cluster offline
and upgrading all the hosts, or you can leave the NLB cluster online and perform a rolling upgrade. A rolling upgrade entails taking individual cluster hosts offline one at a time, upgrading each host, and returning the host to the cluster. You continue upgrading
individual cluster hosts until the entire cluster is upgraded. A rolling upgrade allows the cluster to continue running during the upgrade.

  • How to set up load balancing with overload server on css

can anyone tell me how to set up a load balancing config on css that will enable me to LB proxy caches and when they have too many connections then LB against an overload proxy-cache.
Such that when the normal proxy-cache farm is under the ceiling of max connections then the overload server is not used ?

  • E-Business Suite R12 Oracle services loading sequence in Windows 2003

Can anyone tell me what is the loading sequence for the following Oracle services for EBS R12 in Windows 2003.
    1) Oracle Fulfillment Server service for VIS
    2) Oracle Service VIS
    3) OracleConcMgrVIS service
    4) Oracle RDBMS TNS Listener
    5) Oracle ToolsTNSListener
I have the problem where when Windows 2003 starts up, Oracle Fulfillment Server service for VIS is attempting to stop. Seems like the service is set automatic start somehow. I have to wait the service to be completely stopped, and manually restart the service. But I do not know what is the reason that cause this problem
    Thanks for advice.

Start the following services first or set to Automatic:
    Oracle RDBMS TNS Listener
    Oracle Service VIS
Set the remaining services to Manual
Go to your %APPL_TOP% directory and click on envshell<SID>_<host>.cmd. You can create a shortcut and place it somewhere more convenient. Then cd %ADMIN_SCRIPTS_HOME% and run adstrtal.cmd apps/apps to start all of your applications services after the database has started.
You are having problems starting applications services before the database has opened.

  • Cisco CSS 11503 Arrowpoint/Load Balance question

I am troubleshooting an issue with my 11503.  I am running version 07.40.0.04. I have it configured as follows:
      content upcadtoa-rule
        add service cadtoa-wls1-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls1-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls2-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls2-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls3-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls3-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls4-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls4-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls5-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls5-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls6-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls6-e1
        arrowpoint-cookie expiration 00:00:15:00
        protocol tcp
        port 8001
        advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
        redundant-index 2
        vip address 172.30.194.195 range 2
        arrowpoint-cookie name TOA
        active
However, the load-balancing across the servers does not seem to be doing much balancing.  One of those servers is getting hit with 5 times as much traffic as another and another server is lucky to get a connection at all.  With the cookie expiration set, one would think that this would all balance out over time.
I just came across this information from Cisco and I am wondering if it is relevant:
If you configure a balance or advanced-balance method on a content rule that requires the TCP protocol for Layer 5 (L5) spoofing, you should configure a default URL string, such as url "/*". The addition of the URL string forces the content rule to become an L5 rule and ensures L5 load balancing or stickiness. If you do not configure a default URL string, unexpected results can occur.
In the following configuration example, if you configure a Layer 3 (L3) content rule with an L5 balance method, the CSS performs L5 load balancing, but will reject UDP packets.
    content testing
    vip address 192.168.128.131
    add service s1
    balance url
    active
The balance url method is an L5 load-balancing method in which the CSS must spoof the connection and examine the HTTP GET content request to perform load balancing. The CSS rejects the UDP packet sent to this rule because a UDP connection cannot be L5. Though the CSS allows this rule configuration, its expected behavior would be more clear if you promote the rule to L5 by configuring the url "/*" command.
In the next example, if you configure an L3 content rule with an L5 advanced-balance method, L5 stickiness will not work as expected.
    content testing
    vip address 192.168.128.131
    add service s1
    advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
    active
The advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie method causes the CSS to spoof the connection, however, the CSS still marks it as an L3 rule. Thus, the CSS does not insert the generated cookie and the rule defaults to L3 stickiness (sticky-srcip). You must configure a URL like url "/*" to promote this rule to L5, ensuring that L5 stickiness works as expected.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  The thing is not down, it is just balancing strangely causing application performance issues.
    James

    Hey James,
You will need to suspend the content rule in order to add the url statement.  This will cause a quick downtime until the content rule is activated again.  I have shown below the commands to add the statement.  Perhaps you can create your commands in a Notepad file, then paste them all in so they execute quickly to minimize your downtime:
      content MY-SITE
        vip address 10.201.130.140
        port 80
        protocol tcp
        add service MY-SERVER
        active
    CSS11503# config t
    CSS11503(config)# owner TEST
    CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# content MY-SITE
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
%% Attribute may not be modified on active rule
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# suspend
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# active
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# exit
    CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# exit
    CSS11503(config)# exit
    CSS11503# show run
      content MY-SITE
        vip address 10.201.130.140
        add service MY-SERVER
        port 80
        protocol tcp
       url "/*"       <--------

  • Host Unreachable intermittently within a Windows Network Load Balancing Cluster

    Hi,
We have 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers running multiple IIS web sites and load balanced across Windows Network Load Balancer in unicast mode. Although there are two interfaces in each server, only 1 interface in each server participates in load balancing and
other interface is used for a different backup LAN. The problem I am going to mention was not seen within the NLB for almost 1 year.
I have noticed intermittent "host unreachable" detected from NLB in each host from time to time since 3 weeks ago. After servers are rebooted, both hosts can be reached and can be detected from NLB manager. However it becomes unreachable in both
servers within minutes and then becomes reachable again after several minutes. This behavior is noticed in the load balancer and pings do not work between the two hosts when the issue occurs. I did a packet capture to see what was going on with ARP message
when the issue occurs. ARP entry goes missing in each server when the problem occurs and no ARP replies are returned from each server. But ARP requests are dispatched from both servers when the issue occurs. ARP replies come back after sometime after which
    hosts become reachable again.
I tried to create a permanent static ARP entry (By copying the MAC address from ARP table when the two hosts are reachable) in each host but that hasn't solved the issue either. It seems like the individual MAC address generated by each host is a virtual
one and it doesn't seem to respond when the problem occurs.
However load balancing and web sites are fully functional without any issues even while "host unreachability" issue is detected.
Appreciate if someone could help me to dig the real problem out.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Did you do some change of your network or the NLB firewall settings recently?
If you are using the NLB cluster in Hyper-V guest vm you need to enable the spoofing of MAC address.

  • Load balance LDAP with the CSS 501

I'm trying to setup a content rule to test load balancing LDAP traffic via the CSS but it doesn't seem to be working. Here's my configuration:
    service 10.125.5.56:389
    ip address 10.125.5.56
    protocol tcp
    port 389
    keepalive type script ap-kal-ldap "10.125.5.56"
    active
    content test-ldap:389
    vip address 10.124.155.50
    add service 10.125.5.56:389
    protocol tcp
    balance aca
    port 389
    advanced-balance sticky-srcip-dstport
    active
Anything I'm doing wrong? I see somebody posted a similar issue but doesn't seem like a solution was provided (see below):
    http://forum.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=Data%20Center&topic=Application%20Networking&topicID=.ee7814f&fromOutline=true&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Ddisplay_location%26location%3D.1dda3585/2

    What's the issue ?
Get a sniffer trace simultanously on client and server and see what's going on.

  • Services with different IP address subnets over CSS 11500 series

    Hi all folks!
I have two CSS 11500 series...
In just a few months i will have ready a DRS (Disaster Recovery Site), where i will have 2 more servers to add to the environment.
But this servers will be in a different subnet from that today i have for the servers who are configured in the current services of my CSS.
So then the doubt i arises is:
Is correct to add two new services with these servers, but using the IP addressing of the DRS site???, and including on the CSS a static route to this network, (of the DRS) in order to reach them?? is it correct, it will work well?
    This would be so....
                 ________________LAN to LAN_____________________
                 |                                                                                |
                 |                                                                                |
    |------SITE A------|                                                        |------SITE B------|
         [Firewall] ===============IPSEC============= [Firewall]
               |                                                                                |
               |                                                                                |
    [CSS-A]-[CSS-B]                                                            [SWITCH]
           |          |                                                                     |         |
         [SWITCH]                                                                    |         |
    [srvA] [srvB] [srvC]                                                          [srvD] [srvE]
So, at [CSS-A] & B, i will put a static route to firewall that know the subnet of site B through the IPSEC tunnel.
So In the CSSs, i will add the new services for the Servers "D" & "E" with the IP address of Site B.
This should be seen as well:
    !*************************** GLOBAL ***************************
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 [IP FIREWALL]
ip route SITE B [IP FIREWALL]
    !************************** SERVICE **************************
    service srvA
      ip address A.A.A.x
      port 8080
    service srvB
      ip address A.A.A.x+1
      port 8080
    service srvC
      ip address A.A.A.x+2
    port 8080
    service srvD
      ip address B.B.B.y
    port 8080
    service srvE
      ip address B.B.B.y+1
    port 8080
I know that this practice is not the most desirable, in fact should use"Basic Global Server Load Balancing Site Redundancy Using the CSS with DNS", but I don't have much time to change the entire environment today, and in this first stage i have to begin with this poor but quick solution that i thought and i wanted to be validated if there is posibliidades this to work
Within their experiences that they say? Will operate?
    Thanks in advance!

    Daniel!
    Sorry by delay!
Thank you so much for you time for reply.
You have given me a great help to this doubt!
But..using "source group" let me know..
I can´t undertand the really difference between NAT with ACls as you can see at this link: (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps789/products_tech_note09186a0080093dfc.shtml)
    and
this other link, using NAT (from the piont 5), (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps789/products_configuration_example09186a0080093dff.shtml)
where the NAT is configured under a method different from the previous one..
So.. for this scenario described above, which would you recommend using? I would think that the second is the most indicated truth? What do you think?
    Thanks in advance again!!!
    Have nice day!

  • Load balancing and cluster

    Please help on this,
    Steps I have created
    1. Install Portal on node A
    2. Create j2ee cluster instance on node B pointing to node A
    3. Software load balance both the nodes
Even after load balancing the two portal nodes,if I shutdown Portal node A dispatcher, then the portal node B dispatcher will automatically shutdown, since the portal node B is a j2ee cluster for Portal node A.In this case how the URL will work from node B ? Please explain

I did portal install on server A. I  started dispatcher and I am logging with the URL http://ServerA:52100/irj on server A. And I did install of J2EE cluster on another server called ServerB. I started Server B's dispatcher. When I am starting Server B's dispatcher in Server A I am able to see another time Element joined. The URL for the serverB is http://ServerB:52100/irj. When I created users on Server A, I am able to see the users on Server B.When server B goes down or if dispatcher of B stopped even then Server A is working because it is independent install. But when the Server A goes down which is the main server then the additional J2EE cluster node that is Server B is going down automatically because it is dependent on Server A. But I want to make it as complete high availability of failover, means if Server A goes down it should fail over to Server B and if Server B goes down it should fail over to Server A. I understood we can do software load balancing from windows level or hardware load balancing to get the high availability. But now with my existing installs, I want to make failover to work, please suggest me which is the best way to do without changing any of the existing installs.
    My environment is :
Operating system: Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition
Data base: SQL 2000(Already configured as cluster)
    Portal: EP6.0 SP2

  • Virtual Hosts for Load Balancing

    Hi all,
So I have two identical servers, that have SOA Suite installed pointing to the same database. (RHEL 4) I have configured the mod_oc4j.conf file for round robin, and then I created a virtual host on the httpd.conf file to point to the load balance hardware.
It worked! But with a slight issue. The Load Balance server is orasoaqa.tmpw.net:7777, which opens the main Application Server page. However, when I click on BPEL console, or ESB, it continues using the orasoaqa.tmpw.net:7777 virtual, which of course, breaks even trying to login.
What am I missing here? Here's the entry I added to mod_oc4j.conf:
    Oc4jSelectMethod roundrobin:local
Here's the entry I added to the httpd.conf on server 1:
    Port 7777
    Listen 7777
    NameVirtualHost XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:7777
    <VirtualHost orasoaqaapp101.ma.tmpw.net:7777>
    ServerName orasoaqa.tmpw.net
    ServerAlias orasoaqaapp101.ma.tmpw.net
    Port 7777
    </VirtualHost>
    and on server 2:
    Port 7777
    Listen 7777
    NameVirtualHost XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:7777
    <VirtualHost orasoaqaapp102.ma.tmpw.net:7777>
    ServerName orasoaqa.tmpw.net
    ServerAlias orasoaqaapp102.ma.tmpw.net
    Port 7777
    </VirtualHost>
Yes, the port for Application Server and the port on the Load Balancer are exactly the same, I hope this isn't the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Seeing that you have an external load balancer available, you really should not be trying software load balancing. Windows NLBS is a software based load balancing and is not really dependent on the physical/virtual hosting of the OS. There are certain gotchas
w.r.t the NLB modes since they depend on network protocols such as arp, propagation of MAC addresses and usage of the MAC in the L2 routing tables of network devices.
You should be taking the help of the cloud service provider as ONLY they would have an understanding of their underlying networking infrastructure such as VLANS. addressing, routing rules and such.
You could also refer to the VMware support forum for KB's such as
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006580
Most importantly, NLBS is a base OS related service and you're more likely to get a response in the Windows Server Forum. In the specific case of BizTalk, the Windows NLB is only used for hosting the out of process services such as those associated with
HTTP/s Receive, orchestration published as schemas, web services (asmx) and/or WCF endpoints.

  • Acrhitecture of network load balancing solution

i'm working on a setup that will transition our existing data center setup to a network load balancing solution. i'm far from understanding what components to use and how to approach the problem so any help would be very welcome. here is what we currently have:
    1. 3 web servers (serverA, serverB, serverC)
    2. 1 sql server
    3. 2 layer two unmanaged switches
    4. 1 cisco firewall
each one of the web servers runs a dedicated web app. what i would like is to replace serverA with a NLB cluster of 3 servers and replace serverB with another NLB cluster of 3 servers. serverC is not getting that much usage and it can stay as is.
i have looked at possible solution with Windows Server 2008 NLB and it seems that the best way to do it would be using multicasting which requires upgrading out switches. at the same time if would much more prefer to use hardware load balancing than Windows Server. so i looked at Cisco ACE 4710 appliance. however it seems that some of the cisco switches will also do load balancing. now i'm completely confused whether to upgrade the switches and use them for load balancing or use the ACE appliance. i would appreciate any advices and suggestions. also, any recommendations on breaking up the network using VLANs - if it is necessary with either one of the solutions or if there is some benefit. i guess i'm looking for a "best practices" solution...
any links or documents would be very welcomed.
    thanks.

thanks for your response. i think i'm going with ace 4710. now, as far as vlans go why would i need internet, dmz and internal vlan in my datacenter? i understand that this may be a bit off topic but what is really bugging me is this: with the current setup all of the web servers have 2 nics - one with public IP and one with private IP. same goes with the sql server. on web servers nics with private IPs are used for communicating with the database server. they could very well communicate using nics with public IPs but the person that set this up (i recently inherited it) was convincing me that with the existing setup "public" nics are not burdened with communication between web servers and database server. is this "correct" way of doing it?

  • Load Balancing - Wireless

    Hi
If I'm reading correctly Load Balancing is not advisable if using voice of wifi.
    On a conroler with 70.220 - Wireless - Advanced - Load balancing
Load balancing - client windows is default 5, max denial 3
But on the wlan, the load balancing isn't enabled..
Which one is the master setting?
We're boardcasting several SSIDs, one of them is a guest SSID, which is open, so we get the Apple devices autmaticaly associating to them.
So if we dont set the load balancing on each wlan, this means there is a msximum of 5 devices to 1 AP, doesn't matter which wlan it's on?
Is there a best practice guide for load balancing?
    Clarrifaction would be great
    Cheers
    Craig

    Craig,
Do not use load balancing for latency-sensitive WLANs, especially voice WLANs. Rejecting voice clients extends their roaming delay and can drop calls.
The setting on the WLAN Advanced tab determines whether or not clients associating to that WLAN will be denied if the load balancing algorithm determines the AP to which the client wants to associate is too loaded (determined by the global LB settings). If you have the box unchecked, then LB is not in effect for that WLAN and clients on that WLAN will never be rejected.
The load balancing algorithm is run against clients for an AP. The count of clients is cumulative for all WLANs, i.e., the load balancing numbers are not set and comared on a per-WLAN basis. This wouldn't make a lot of sense as the LB algorithm is attempting to keep clients physically spread across infrastructure radio resources, regardless of whether you have 1 WLAN or 5 WLANs active on the radio.
I don't know of a best practices guidefor load balancing other than don't use it on WLANs that have low-latency applications such as voice or live-streaming (unbuffered) video. The controller configuration guide is a good place to start and does a pretty good job of explaining how it works.
One other thing I would recommend is to make the algorithm less aggressive. I think max 3 denials is too high and would drop to 1 or 2. I'd also open up the LB window size to about 8 or 10 instead of the default 5.
I think some folks on the forums here have found some issues with LB, although I haven't run into too many so far. I think the AP sends a message type 17 and some clients have trouble processing it (or something like that). You might want to search the forums here and check the bug toolkit to see if there's anything that comes up.
