Load software via CD sharing

I need to load software on my iMac but the CD drive isn't recognizing any discs.  I can load it from my MacBook Pro via CD sharing, can't I?  Can someone please refresh my memory on the procedure?

This issue arose because my computer went all squirrelly and the OS had to be reinstalled, so all data and programs were wiped.  Is it possible I need to reload the CD/DVD driver software and the CD/DVD driver will then work again?

  • After resetting password via 10.4 disk, I still need a password to load software

    Hello There!
I am in quite of a bind, as I've tried to reset my password via the OSX 10.4 installation disks, but since I've upgraded to 10.6, I'm still required to type in a password of which I've long since have forgotten in order to load software necessary to transfer my *.jpg files to an external HDD.
Any and all help with regard to this matter shall be greatly appreciated, as I am in a major quandry to save my iPhoto images! (I need to load some software to save this precious data on an external HDD)...
    Kindest Regards,
    David

    Thanks!
The more I thought about it, the more this makes sense, as I have upgraded my OSX from the initial version.
    Again, thanks for our input!

  • Why won't some of my MP4s stream to Apple TV (or iPad) via Home Sharing?

Hi all. I've been converting my DVDs, HD-DVDs, and Blu-rays to MP4, using MakeMKV and then Handbrake 0.9.9.5530 64-bit for encoding. I have been intending to play the files on my iPad, both transferring to the device and streaming via Home Sharing. I also want stream these via Apple TV (3rd gen, Model A1427) in the house via Home Sharing.
All the files sourced from HD-DVDs & Blu-rays seem to work fine. However, more than half the DVDs I've converted -- using the same Handbrake preset I've been using for the BRs -- will not play back on the iPad, or streamed to the iPad, or streamed to Apple TV. The files will copy to the iPad, but for both device playback and streaming, I get the error message "The operation could not be completed." On Apple TV, it's "An error occurred loading this content, try again later."
The files will play in iTunes for Windows, and they will play in VLC. (Files bought from the iTunes Store also stream fine.) There is no metadata in these files, but I am manually adding a poster image once I drop them into iTunes.
It seems pretty clear that this is a problem with the file itself, but since the only issues I'm having involve streaming, I reset my router for good measure. I restarted the Apple TV and quit all the apps on my iPad before restarting it, too. I've also made sure the firmware on all devices is up to date. None of that had an effect.
I compared a DVD rip (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adeventure) to a BR rip (Independence Day). Both feature exactly the same bitrates & sample rates for video and audio -- according to the Windows Properties -> Details tab, Data rate is 1499kbps, Total bitrate 1659, 23 frames/second, 2 stereo audio channels at 48KHz. The only difference is the BR frame size is larger (1920x812), and of course the run times & file sizes are different. But the bigger file plays fine, and a lot of these smaller files do not.
MP4s from DVDs that will stream: Toy Story, Dead Again, Clue, School of Rock.
MP4s from DVDs that won't stream: Ocean's Eleven, Escape from New York, Galaxy Quest, Robocop (Criterion). Shaun of the Dead, Team America World Police
Again, these were all converted on the same PC with the same software and same settings. If there's a common thread among the source material of the MP4s that will play and won't play, I don't know what it is, but I figured it would not hurt to list it.
My Handbrake settings are based on Handbrake's AppleTV 2 preset, with the following modifications:
Avg Bitrate 1500, 2-pass, no turbo 1st pass
    Framerate: 30, Peak
    Optimize:
    x264 Preset: Very Slow
    H.264 Profile: High
    H.264 Level: 3.1
Container is MP4, as is the file extension. (Since dragged-and-dropped MKV files default to M4V in Handbrake, I select MKV then re-select MP4 from the Container drop-down before adding to Handbrake's queue.)
Someone suggested I simply change the file extension to M4V, so I tried it, but that did not fool any of the stream devices.
I have been testing the output MP4 files on my PC as I go, and once they played fine in VLC after Handbrake, I have been deleting the MKV files. I can go back and rip them all again if I have to (these are all from DVDs I personally own), but obviously I'd rather not do that! So my questions now are:
    - Could this be related to the audio stream? I've been opting for the DD 3/2.1 stream whenever possible when ripping, and letting Handbrake mix it down.
    - If I run the MP4s through Handbrake a second time with a different setting, will it do a pass-through convert instead of a full re-encode? (I don't want to shrink the video if only the audio needs attention.) If so, which setting should that be?
    - Is there a way to repair these MP4 files without completely starting over with a fresh MKV?
    - If I have to start from scratch, should I go with Constant Quality over Average Bitrate?
Hopefully someone can spot my issue based on this description. I'm happy to send you my Handbrake settings as a .plist file and offer any other info I can, as I'm stumped as to what went wrong. There has to be a logical reason. Thanks!

I've continued tests on different films, and tried my entire collection. I've found about two dozen that will play fine on the PC, but will not cooperate when streamed to either Apple TV or my iPad. I tried several more tests with the audio, and that turned out not to be a factor -- I could not replicate that on another test.
I wonder if something in the header of these files is corrupted or a flag is set incorrectly or something along those lines, as the data appears to be fine -- it's just not "handshaking" with my streaming hardware and/or the Apple Home Sharing code that powers it.
Is there any way for me to "scrub" these files and amend their headers, or get into the file and tinker with that info by hand?

  • HT3819 Can I transfer music from one computer to another via home sharing?

Can I transfer my music from one computer to another via home sharing?

So long as they are on the same wifi network, yes.
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.
If there's a lot of stuff in the library you're transferring from, the transfer may take some time.

  • Error: Unable to load the GSS-API Shared Library

    Hi all,
I'm trying to install a working copy of SAP on a Debian Etch host. I've tried all versions available here: ftp://ftp.sap.com/pub/sapgui/java/  (710 r[2-6])  The jar installer completes successfully without error, but when I attempt to launch the application, I'm greeted with the same critical error each time. Here's my connection string:
    conn=/M/my-server-hostname/S/3610/G/PRD_GENERIC&sncon=true&sncqop=3
    Here's my (Sun) java version:
    java version "1.6.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode)
    Here's the full error message:

Is there a software dependency I might be missing? This is my first attempt at installing SAP on a Linux host, so there may be something else even more obvious that I'm not seeing...
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi,
one solution should be to set the env variable $SNC_LIB to you libseude.so, e.g.
$>setenv SNC_LIB /usr/sap/<sid>/SYS/exe/run/libsecude.o (or wherever the lib resides)
    and then restart guilogon.
Also, as fas as I know, SAPGUI has issues with Java 6, so I would rather go with Java 5 or 1.4.2.

  • Cannot Print Photos via Printer Sharing

I cannot print photos from iPhoto or Preview using Printer Sharing to my iMac anymore.  I get this error message when I attempt to print a photo:
    /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpII.app/Contents/MacOS/ rastertoescpII failed
I am using a Mac Book Pro sharing the printer connected to my iMac over a wireless network.  I can still print documents OK, so the printer sharing is working fine.
I have recently upgraded to iPhoto 9.2.3, and have updated the printer driver via Software Update.
If I connect the printer directly to the Mac Book Pro I have no problems printing photos from either iPhoto or Preview.
The iMac still prints from the older iPhoto OK.
This is rather a pest so I welcome any suggestions.
    Robin.

Fixed.  Installing Mountain Lion has done the trick.  There must have been a glitch in Snow Leopard that was the bother.  Anyway, I am happy I can now print form my MBP via printer sharing.

  • Installing Software Utilizing Screen Sharing

    Hi
I recently gave my sister-in-law a MacBook and frequently have to tweak it using screen sharing as she travels a lot is not very computer literate.
Question: Is it possible to install software via screen share - she somehow lost her copy of pages (has keynote and numbers) and I would like to reinstall.
    Thanks

There are two issues here, one is installing over screen share and the second is licensing.
The Family Pack does not cover computers outside your household.
    From http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB943Z/A
The Family Pack Software License Agreement allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time *as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that household*. By “household” we mean a person or persons who share the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home, or condominium, including students who are primary residents of that household but reside at a separate on-campus location.
When you gave her the MacBook you were in a grey area of the law, as the software was licensed for use in your household and may not be transferable, unless you transfer the whole licence to her household - in which case you would need a new copy...
Of course if you still own the MacBook and have merely lent it to your sister in law then it probably is still licensed...
Possible to install over screen sharing, but you would need to copy over the installation files over to her computer.

  • Cannot load software or maps after hard reboot N96

I was having issues with my phone randomly rebooting, so I followed the instructions on this forum for a har reboot on the phone, and formatting the memory card and mass storage. Now I have a couple of issues:
The phone is running software version 11.018. Software updater software cannot connect to the phone, and I have tried updating over the air but it comes back and says I am running latest version. Can anyone suggest how I can update to version 12?
Second issue is I cannot connect to the phone using the Map Loader software. When I start the applicationit comes up with an error message that the connected phone is without a valid maps drive. It suggested restarting the application which I have done but to no avail.
    Please help me!

    Thanks for your reply.
I can connect fine using PC suite and all applications appear to work normally, It is just the map loader software that seems to connect but immediately gives the error message about no valid maps drive. When I connect the phone for the maps application, it asks me to connect using Mass Storage mode, which I do.
Also when I start the GPS application on the phone, I get the message "unable to find preferred drive C for storing map data. The following drive will be used: E" I can click IK and go into the GPS application, but it is clear there is no Map data. I am assuming I deleted my map file and/or the folder that the map loader software is looking for when I formatted the card and mass storage in the phone.
The reset procedure I followed was described in this forum post: /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=157387&query.id=1415938#M157387
"backup your mobile's contacts, messages, notes, calender and bookmarks via Nokia PC Suite backup utility. Don't backup anything else like settings or user files etc. Now backup your images, videos and music files using Windows Explorer. Now format your memory card and switch off your mobile. Now press and hold this 3 key "green call key, * and 3" together and switch on your mobile. Press and hold down that 3 button till country insertion dialogue appear. Check your problem first and if it solve then restore all your backup using PC Suite and explorer."
I am thinking the  mistake I have made was to also format the mass storage inside the phone

  • Using data loading softwares better than SM35 as batch input

    Hi All,
Can anyone tell me what are the pros and cons of using SM35 batch input in SAP as compared with commercial data loading software like win shuttle, data loader etc
    Thanks in advance.

Our data loading software runs in the background, with each particular run set as a separate batch. It doesn't matter if this data comes from a program generated on site, or via a data feed interfaced from another system. With the transaction, SM35, I can look at each run and know immediately if any entry within that run did not post correctly, as well as those that did. I can view each transaction and get a detailed log on all that happened. If an entry failed to post, I can see exactly where within the posting process the transaction failed and why it failed.  When we have a problem with a new - or recently changed, interface, SM35 is the tool I use to debug the problem fast. Another benefit of this batch input session is when a user tells me her/his interface failed. Often it didn't; someone just ran off with their interface report. In those cases, I don't have to restore & re-run anything. I just reprint the run to the relief  - and gratitude, of the user.

  • Can software updates be shared on other computers?

I thought I read somewhere that Software Updates could be downloaded on one computer and then shared on another. We have 3 Macs in the house and the software updates are chewing through my allocated data, at least it is a part of the problem I believe.
Is there a link to the instructions to get ALL software updates on one and then just share them on the other two computers, this would greatly reduce the amount of data being used.
If so, could someone let me know the link and also how to disable the auto update on all but one computer so that we don't have this problem?
If someone knows, I would greatly appreciate their help. Thanks.

I am just not sure how to stop the computers automatically updating
    On the opening screen of:
System Preferences > Software Update > Scheduled Check pane
uncheck "Check for Updates" | Weekly
now you can check for and install updates manually on your own schedule.
how to choose the "Download Only" mode
On the Update menu, the "Download only" menu item will be present, but will be grayed out until updates are actually available. Selecting "Download only" will download (but not install) the updates with checkmarks from the list. In 10.4 and earlier, these are left in the "Packages" folder inside the Library folder. In 10.5 and later, they are left in the "Downloads" folder.
\[To actually install once downloaded, you may either open all the packages in the Finder (which launches Installer) or choose "Install now" from the same menu.]
Once they have been downloaded, you are free to copy them around to your other computers. You can use Zip disks if you prefer.
If you have all these computers connected to the Internet through a Router, you already have all the cabling in place for File Sharing. The software for File Sharing is already in place in all your Macs. All you need to do is enable Personal File Sharing in:
    System Preferences > Sharing
    and use the Finder's:
    Go > Connect to Server
Log in with a username and password that is valid on the computer that is holding the files to be shared. If your access is too limited, you can either move the files to be shared to the Public folder, or log in with an administrator's username and password for broader access.
As Niel has pointed out, if you have a Mac OS X Server on your network, a much more elegant mechanism is available. The Server automatically checks and downloads, and stores the packages in a tamper-proof form on the Server. Each Mac then asks the local Server for any updates, and they are supplied automatically without a new Internet download.

  • Why can't I connect to my Mac Mini via Finder (but I CAN via screen sharing)?

My problem concerns a quad-core 2.0 GHz Mac Mini Server (mid 2011, I think) with SSD and 3 external hard drives. It's (a) my desktop workstation (b) our Time Machine backup repository (c) iTunes server and (d) Printopia server for our iDevices. That's it. The only thing I use the server app for, really, is Time Machine.
So recently we lost power a couple of times. As always, I ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions and verified the main disk. All appeared well.
But all is assuredly not well. Now, none of my other Macs can (a) find the Time Machine backup volume or (b) connect to the server at all. Whenever I try either thing, I receive the message below:
The network is in flawless shape otherwise. My router is the latest generation Airport Extreme Base Station. The server has a static IP, and I CAN connect to it from my other Macs by clicking Finder, then Go, then entering the IP address -- but ONLY if I use an smb:// prefix!
Moreover, even when I'm connected in this way, I STILL get the message whenever I try to connect by merely clicking the name on the finder sidebar -- or whenever I try to access the machine using Time Machine preferences. Weirder still, I CANNOT connect to the ip address via afp.
Final piece of weirdness: I can also connect to this machine from any other Mac via screen sharing. So please....
WHAT'S MY PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I FIX IT? I've wracked my brains, combed through forums and can find nobody else with this problem, let alone a solution. The problem persists when I shut down the server app.
I'm assuming that either something is corrupted or some setting is afoul, but can't figure out what it might me,
I'm just about at the point of reformatting my main drive and reinstalling Mountain Lion, but am hoping someone can spare me that pain.
    THANK YOU so much!
    Arthur P. Johnson
P.S. I have no problem at all with outbound connections from this bewitched Mini. Just inbound.
P.P.S I will, of course, be happy to provide shots of any other settings you may desire,
