Loading 9.2 onto Panther w/classic support

Anyone Know the procedure for loading the 9.2 power book system disk onto a pismo w 10.3 panther (W/classic support) already in place. I erred in trying this before. I overrode the 10.3 by trying to reinstall 9.2. I need to know if I can do this because I'm out of system 10.3 disks. Thanks to anyone who can help or direct to info on this. John

John, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Just boot using the OS 9.x install CD. Your current Panther system software is located in a folder named System. When you install OS 9, it will be in a folder named System Folder. The installation of OS 9 will not affect or override the Panther system. If you wnat to be able to boot into OS 9 (rather than run OS 9 in classic mode), you must have the OS 9 drivers installed on your hard drive. You can check to see if the drivers are installed by looking at the About this Mac>More Info>Hardware>ATA.
What OS 9 CD are you using? A retail version - white with an orange 9?
What was your previous problem in installing OS 9?

  • Loading OS 9 onto a new MacBook?

Aloha, I just bought a great little MacBook. I have a few OS 9 compatible programs I'd still like to use. Can I load OS 9 onto a MacBook 2.0 GHz?
PS I don't have the OS 9 Software either, know where I can get it if it can be run on new MacBook?
    Thanks for any help!
    Mark

Hi, Mark. Classic mode is not supported on any Intel Mac. Sheepshaversupports the installation of OS 9.0.4 or earlier (not any later version) on such Macs, and enables the use of applications that will run in those OS versions. Some apps won't. To try it with your apps, of course you'll need to buy an OS 9.0 or 9.0.4 installer CD. The only dependable source I know for those, now that AppleRescue is defunct, is http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/, which charges unconscionable prices for them. If you aren't willing to pay those prices, you'll have to take your chances on buying a used installer CD on Ebay or elsewhere. Be aware that many Ebay sellers of Mac OS installer CDs and DVDs really have no idea what they're selling, or are misrepresenting it deliberately. Buy only an OS 9.0 or 9.1 CD with a white label and a large gold "9" on it, and be sure it doesn't say "Upgrade" on it.

Attach the HDD to your MBP.  Access the Recovery Partition.  When you get the menu for the HDD, select the one you have attached.

If the new HDD is to replace the internal one, use Disc Utility>Restore.

  • Can't seem to re-install Classic support

I have been preparing an old PowerMac G4 to give to a friend.   I erased the hard-drive and did a clean install of Tiger, and updated it.   I'm now trying to re-install Classic support (so I can occasionally go to her house and run one of my OS9 apps, since I can't seem to find Chubby Bunny to get classic support on my new/old Intel machine :-(
I thought all that was necessary was to copy an OS9 System Folder onto the hard-drive.   (I actually made a small separate partition when I erased the hard-drive, although I doubt this was necessary).   I copied the System Folder from a "Mac OS9 Install" CD that was in the original set of discs that came when I bought an older G4 new.   I think the discs are probably OSX 10.1, but the OS9 disc seems to be 9.2
Anyhow, when I try to fire up Classic mode, I get a message somehting like "this system software can only run on the original media, not if it is copied to another drive".     I assume it's referring to the fact that I have copied the System Folder from the CD to my hard-drive.   And if I leave the OS9 CD in the drive and point Classic to it (which would be a poor long-term solution), it complains that it needs to update the Classic resources and the volume is un-writable.   Kind of a catch-22.
The weird thing is, I successfully did this once before, when I bought (used) this same G4.
    Thanks.
P.S.  Please let me know if I should put this in the OSX Tiger forum instead.

But when I went to do the OS9 install, it could only find the root partition where I have 10.4.11 installed.  It could not find the other partition of the my main HDD (where I'd hoped to put OS9), nor could it find the smaller HDD at all.   It refused to install it on the root partition anyhow, without doing a clean install and nuking OSX.
Evidently the problem was that I didn't check "install OS9 drivers" when I formatted the smaller HDD - even though it said "this will not affect Classic".   So I re-formatted it and checked that, and now it allowed me to install OS9.2 on it, and now Classic works fine.   It still refused to recognize the smaller partition of my main HDD, which is where I really wanted to install it.
    Thanks all.

  • Load Office 2001 onto Mac Mini

    Dear Group,
I just bought a Mac Mini but I can't seem to load Office 2001 onto the computer.
When I insert the installation disks the icons to install are "X"ed out on the CD. The was a trail version of the software on the computer but I already have the software. I tried to delete the trail version from the hard drive and then install the software but it still does not work.
Any suggestion on loading the software???
    Thanks,
    Alberto.
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Because Mac OS X on a G3 can run a mode called Classic, which brings up Mac OS 9 to be able to run Office 2001. In addition, you could have switched to Mac OS 9 booting on a G3 as well to run Office 2001.
Here's my FAQ on the differences:

  • Can't find Classic support on Tiger DVD

I need help. I recently purchased a used 17" powerbook. I wiped out the hard drive and installed the Tiger DVD, and everything works fine... but I can't find anything that installs Classic. Can I install the Classic Environment from the Tiger DVD? Or do I have to use my old Panther CDs to install Classic on the laptop. My two other Macs, a G5 (with Tiger) has classic working. However, they originally had Panther and then I just upgraded to Tiger. How can I get Classic back?

Apple does not advise installing OS 9 for Classic support from any source other than either the original disks that came with the Mac or (in some cases) with a retail version of OS 9. If your OS 9.2 disk is a stand alone retail installer (not an updater for OS 9.0 or 9.1) it should work. Your Panther disk will not, unless it is a model specific version for your model.
The exact method of installing OS 9 varies greatly depending on what disks you have. Please be as specific as possible about this -- the source of the disk(s), if they say they are bootable, if they are for a specific model, etc.
By far the easiest way to do the install is with the original disks for the PowerBook. You should try to get them from the seller to avoid a lot of hassles.

  • Installing nVidia GeForce drivers on Mac OS 9 Classic Support

    hi, everyone !
I have just installed classic support on my Quicksilver and i don't know how to install the drivers for my GeForce Ti4600 OEM video card.
Can you please give me more information ?
    Cheers !

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com may be another place to find references you need.
Classic driver support is not the same as booting into Mac OS 9 support.
For instance Simcity 2000 would only run on my iMac G4 if I booted into Mac OS 9. When I try to run it in Classic, it stalls trying to load. The same thing happened to John Madden 2000 unless I changed to software graphics mode, and then only when booted into Mac OS 9.
Booting means going into Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk and selecting the Mac OS 9 System Folder, and restart. Whereas Classic loads it in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic without a reboot.

  • Can I put an older version of GarageBand onto my iphone classic?

I have upgraded to iphone 4S and have a purchased garageband app.  (Love it)
My older iphone classic (now used as an ipod music player / games for the kids) will not accept the app due to version conflict.
Can I put a previous version of GarageBand onto my iphone classic?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.  I'm not looking to replace my current operating system, because I primarily need to work out of 10.7.  I just need the older version (basically dual boot, choose which operating system I want at startup) to occassionally play the games that are not supported in 10.7.  Actually, I had heard of lots of people doing this but the responses were all over the place and I was hoping to get a concise thought of what will work for my specific scenario.
Unfortunately borrowing my mother's computer is not  an option as she lives miles  from me and I would never know when I have the time or want to play.  Anyone who has played Diablo or Warcraft can sympathize, my mom would never see her computer again if I needed it to play these games.
Thanks again.  I might try the external drive scenario, but was just hoping to be able to dual boot into 10.6 directly with the hard drive(s) in the computer because my USB and firewire ports are all taken with lots of other equipment (I'm a graphic/web designer so have 2 printers, wacom tablet, external backup, 2 large die cut machines and so much more already plugged in).  I'm pretty tapped out on ports without using a hub and I don't like the way they work (too many years in technology knowing that direct connect is the best way to go).

  • Cannot load apps directly onto ipad

When I try to load apps directly onto my ipad via my wifi it just shows as "waiting" and eventually states cannot connect to itunes. (although I must have been connected originally to start the download) any ideas?

This is a wild stab-in-the-dark but a system Reset cures many ills and takes but a minute to perform:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A Reset does NOT delete apps, photos, movies, music or any other data. A Reset does NOT delete any settings for email, network access, etc.
Also, you might wish to download the 4.2 User Guide. Pay special attention to page 170.

  • Classic Support Audio Issue

I have OS 9.2.2 Classic Support on my OS X 10.3.9 to play my older CD rom games and older files that require Classic Support to load when I open them. But when I load a game that requires OS 9 to load, the audio is nearly twice as fast as what it should be. Has anyone had this problem before? I would like to know how to solve this problem.

You could create a process that runs before the validations that writes your report data out to a collection and sets a hidden page item to indicate that your data is now in the collection. Use the page item being set to avoid running this process more than once.
Create a 2nd region which Queries the collection instead of the table(s), make it conditional on the page item being set in the above process.
Add a condition to your existing report region to not display if the above page item is set.
When the validations pass, your data will always be in the collection so have your update process always use of the collection data.

  • I bought two songs off itunes and they wont sync onto my ipod touch but they did sync onto my ipod classic.  I have tried all troubleshooting ideas to get the songs to sync on my ipod toch but nothing works. :(

I bought some songs off of itunes and the songs synced onto my ipod CLASSIC but they didnt sync into my ipod TOUCH. I have tried authorizing and deauthorizing my laptop, updating softwares but nothing works. Anyone know why this is happening?!?!?!

    Hi,
The songs need to be in the playlist(s) that go onto the ipod touch.
Plug the ipod touch into the computer and go to the music section of it from the devices menu. From here make sure that the playlist(s) that go on to this ipod are the ones that have the new songs.
Once this is done, click sync/apply.
    I hope this helps.
