Loading an Operating System to Multiple Computers

I have a simple question.
I bought a new Mac Pro that came with OS 10.6
I own a Mac Pro with OS 10.5
Can I just slap in my OS 10.6 into the older machine and install the new operating system since they don't have serial numbers.
Or Vice Versa if I wanted to.

You can't use your OEM DVD on another machine.
SL is $25 @ Amazon, Newegg etc.
Here I thought you wanted to put 10.5.7 on your new Mac.... (you can't boot with even 10.5.6).

  • My computer crashed and I had to re load my operation system. now itunes won't open. it says it was created by a newer version? what is that?

my computer crashed and I had to re load my operation system. now, when I try to open my itunes all I get is a message that says "can not be read because itunes was created by a newer version" what does that mean and how do I correct it. I need my music back!

As iTunes is uopgraded the newer versions require that the iTunes database be upgraded to match. It sounds like you now have an older version of the sftware attempting to load an upgraded library which it can't do.
What version of OS X are you running?
What version of iTunes are you currently running?
What versions were you running when your system crashed?

  • "DD8x". Error message for loading process:Operating system error !

Using the OLE command I receive the following error:
Cannot load the file "File Name" with the loading process "DD8x". Error message for loading process:
    Operating system error <> !
    strCommand ="DATAFILEIMPORT('J:\ctf\GM\040119-2\dat7.dat','',0)"

I get the same error with the "DataLoadHdFile" command.
After the error happens, I cannot load any files in the directory until I
    reboot DIAdem.

    Hi punkmonkey,
I'm curious why you compare the results of the "DataLoadHdFile" command with that of the "DataFileImport" command. The former is a time-honored DAT-file-specific command for only reading the header file contents-- NOT the data, and the latter is a brand new DIAdem 9.0 function for loading all sorts of data files-- TDM files included.
If you want to load a DAT file using an OLE command, why don't you try the time-honored "DataLoad" command, which is specifically designed for loading DAT files? The "DataLoadHdFile" command is really only used to do selective loading (specific channels or rows) of part of a DAT file. Do you want to load selectively, or do you want to load all the channels from the DAT file?
When you get the same error with
the "DataLoadHdFile" command, are you executing that command also through OLE automation, or directly in DIAdem? What happens if you try both the "DataLoadHdFile" and the "DataFileImport" commands directly from DIAdem (no OLE)?

  • Cannot get turbotax 2013 to load (my operating system is snow leopard, 64bit)

Cannot get turbotax 2013 to load (my operating system is snow leopard, 64bit) Disk at first sounds like it is loading, then kind of grinds around and comes to a stop. Installed apple software updates for itunes, just before trying to load turbotax, could that have any effect on my disc drive?

put in another cd/dvd and see if it makes the same noise.  if so, your superdrive may be damaged.

  • How can I stop my Macbook from going to sleep whilst I load the operating system (10.5) on?

I'm trying very unsuccessfully to reinstall the system from scratch, so that I have a clean computer. I'm starting with 10.5 and then going to upgrade in increments from that to the last operating system the computer will run, which is 10.6.8.
Firstly I've wiped the hard disk in Disk Tools and then started it up from the master disk of 10.5, and its telling me it will take 64 hours and some minutes to install, so I can't keep moving the mouse to stop it going to sleep for that long.
I know it sounds as though something is wrong, but I have run both Disk Tools and Tech Tool Pro through it and both say there's nothing wrong with either the computer or the hard disk, and it was running fine (if slow - but that's its age!) prior to this clean install.
This computer is the first of the intel Macbooks and is a single core intel processor with 1gb of Ram.
What I need to do is to stop it going to sleep during the install, as every time it does it just halts the install and over night, for instance, I'm no further forward than I was the night before, even though I left it going all night.
All I'm trying to do is get it to 10.6.8 so that I can run Bootcamp on it and turn it into a PC to do my accounts (and no, the software we use only runs on PC, but Paralles, VMWare Fusion etc still make it painfully slow to use, and It's bad enough having to do accounts without having to wait for it to do every move...)
I can't go straight to 10.6 as the only copies we have of this are "drag and drop" upgrades that Apple supplied with 3 of our other Macs. Also the computer won't read dual layer DVDs (too old) so I can't load the full copy we have made of the OS.

It's simply called Photos and there is no options/setting thing on it. I have windows 8, it's a stand alone photo library viewer.

  • I want to re load my operating system

It seems that my laptop is running much slower lately. I recently moved a lot of music etc off the hard drive and so I would like to reformat and re load the system software.
I have everything backed up on an external hard drive etc.  I am looking for some step-by-step help to do this as painless as possible.
    Thanks.

First, ensure you have a valid AppleID and your Mac is registered on it. Then ensure you have SPEEDY Internet link: you will be downloading a 4.5GB monster of an installer file and your Mac will depend on the download succeeding before you can use it again.
Once ALL YOUR STUFF IS SAFE IN THE BACKUP and you have VERIFIED that the backup works and is ok. restart into Recovery Mode by holding down Command R prior to the startup chime. Go past the languages select screen. Select Disk Utility (bottom choice) and ERASE you Macintosh HD volume. Quit Disk Utility to return to the previous screen, the choose Instal OS X (first choice). Authenticate with your Apple ID and follow the onscreen instructions. When done you will have a virgin Mac once again, that you can proceed to pervert with all your backed up stuff.
Preferably have TWO backups. One of them being a bootable clone. Better safe than sorry.

  • How to re-install pre-loaded windows Operating system On LENOVO 3000 N200

    Hi!
I am having re-installed Windows Vista Home edition on my laptop. Does anyone know a procedure to re-install the Vista for a clean install. I have not received any recovery disk from LENOVO along with the laptop. Do I need to download all drivers from the LENOVO web site to recover my system after the Vista re-install? Do someone has the recovery disk for this model (0769)?

Hi ljinks, welcome to the forum,
do you have a folder D:\drivers on your system? I believe that some Idea system do; it should contain drivers and preinstalled apps in which case hopefully you'll find it there.

  • RECOVERY LOOP: (Error Code:0xc0000185) PC doesn't load my operating system windows 8.

    Hello,
About 3 weeks ago my just over a year new laptop took a fall onto the carpet from 4 feet above... my screen was cracked so I ordered a new one and put it in yesterday. Now, I am having problems. I start up my laptop, the HP logo with a timer circle is spinning below it, then it says " your Pc ran into a problem and needs to restart", it restarts and then it says, " Recovery- Your PC couldn't start properly. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error Code: 0xc0000185." With a bunch of other stuff written below it.. I have tried all the prompts possible. I did do a HP PC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC UEFI test, both the short and extended one. It says FAILED - Failure ID: GLXS3H-6MF76S-MFPWWJ-60S603, with the Product ID: C5E40UA#ABA then right below HARD DRIVE 1.
My lap top will not go into the windows screen now at all. I am guessing the fall my lap top took did some damage to the hard drive and that is the internal problem now. I did look at a video on how to take the hard drive out and I did unplug, remove battery, and take it out and took the controller board off, check to make sure nothing was lose or broken, and put back together and reinserted it into my laptop and I am still having the same loop as above happening.
    INFO about my laptop:

    -Windows 8
    -750 GB Hard Drive
If you need any other information let me know and I will send it your way. I appreciate any help you give in advance.

    Brian:
I replaced my hard drive in my Powerbook G4 1.25
I take that to mean that you removed the old HDD and replaced it with a brand new Parallel ATA/IDE 2.5" HDD. Correct?
and it will not load the operating system
Do you mean that it will not boot from the install disk? or
Do you mean that you booted from the install drive disk, formatted your new HDD and installed the OS and now you cannot boot from the installation?
Here are directions for formatting and for installation:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive

  • A60-155: Operating system will not boot.

I have a TOSHIBA A60-155. when i turn on the laptop it willnot load the operating system, i have read the manual and apparently it is failing the self test i have tried selecting all start up modes but nothing will work. I have not yet tried any Recovery cd's. The problem started after i pressed the power off because the computer froze. Does anybody have the solution to this problem???
I would also like to know what BIOS is and do i have to upgrade it? my laptop is about six months old.

    Hi Ben,
Firstly, you should not need to update your BIOS if your notebook is only a few months old.
Secondly, The start sequence of your notebook is a three stage process :-
    1. The POST will check the functionality of your attached peripheral resources, HDD DVD etc.
    2. The BIOS will then load and deal with the allocation of RAM etc and also initialise the basic system functions of your notebook.
    3. The BIOS will read the Master Boot Record to ascertain what operating systems you have installed and will then either load the required system or give you a menu of possible options from which you can choose.
If you press the ESC key as soon as the power on process starts you should see the results of the first two steps (The POST and the initial BIOS load).
The fact that you see the selection menu offering the choice of load types (i.e. Safe Mode etc.) would suggest that your system cannot load your operating system from the hard drive. The fact that none of the available options work indicates that there is a basic problem with your hard drive.
If you have a bootable CD then I would suggest that you try to boot your system from the CD (Press and hold the F12 key during the initial power on sequence and then select your CD drive from the list).
Alternatively you could restore your OS from the recovery CDs but this will format your hard drive resulting in the loss of your data.

  • Dell Inspiron 560 - operating system corrupted

    Hello,
I am not sure what happened but when I go to turn my pc on, it will show the main dell logo with the options to select F2 and F12 but after that, it goes to a black screen with a white cursor at the top left. I have tried booting my pc with other options such as DVD or USB. I think I downloaded the correct file on my usb to try to load the operating system back on but I still don't know how to run it exactly..if that makes any sense. The option to select F8 to set my computer to factory reset is not working. I really don't care if I loose my info, I just want my pc up and running. Any help here?? Thanks!

    I assume you got a Windows 7 O/S.
The drivers come with Windows 7, just go to the "Devices and Printers" and add a printer.
    "Local" printer.
At the "Install Printer Driver" screen click on the "Windows Update" to dnload printer drivers from Microsoft. (this will take a few minutes).
Select the Laserjet 5 from the "HP" selection.
As far as the adapter goes, most of your local computer stores should be able to supply you with one.
Please mark the post that solves your issue as "Accept as Solution".

  • Guide to Installation of Operating System & Software

Try to follow this guide when installing new operating system for new computers.  This is a helpful guide for almost error free OS installtion.
Thanks to Mr. Steveo from the AsusBoards.
PS i hope you dont mind i linked your guide

    17. Go to where you put the downloaded files on the C:\ drive. Find the file for Windows XP SP1a. Click on it to begin setup. At some point it will ask you if you want a backup copy of your files made. SP1a is pretty much bug free, and a backup copy of your original files takes up a lot of unneeded hard drive space. So my recommendation would be to choose ?No? to making a backup. Follow all onscreen instructions including when your are told to reboot.
    18. When you get back to the desktop, click Start Button. Right click on My Computer and choose ?Properties.? Click the ?Remote? tab and then clear all check boxes you see on that page. The remote call services have a way of acting up and its best to disable them before installing software and drivers. If you ever want to use Remote Assistance later, you can enable it on a per use bases. Once you have cleared the check boxes, click the ?Apply" button
    19. Now while still in System Properties, click the tab called ?Automatic Updates.? Service pack 1 installs some new features for this tab. Review what you see on the screen and set things up to your liking. Again click the ?Apply" button. Close everything out and return to the desktop.
    20. Again using ?My Computer? navigate to the saved files you coped from CDR. Find the Intel Chipset Configuration Utility (also known as your INF drivers). Click the application's "exe" file and let the drivers install themselves. Once complete, reboot as instructed.
    21. Now is when we want to update the USB drivers so that they are properly installed for USB2.0 functionality. To do this, click Start Button, then right click My Computer and choose Properties. Click the ?Hardware? tab, then click the ?Device Manager? button. On the tree in the Device Manager you should see a device with a yellow question mark over it called either ?USB Controller?, ?Serial Device?, or something of similar wording.
Right click that device and choose ?Update Driver.? Make sure the ?dot? is in the box called ?Install the Software Automatically? ? then click the ?Next? button. Windows will find the proper USB2.0 drivers and stack from Service Pack 1a and install them properly. Once the process is finished, you may be prompted to reboot the computer. IF NOT, REBOOT NOW ANYWAY.
    22. This next step is for people with a HT Enabled CPU. (Hyperthreading) Current word from the gurus online is that for full functionality of HT you need to install the Intel Application Accelerator Software. I am a bit skeptical of needing to do this, but since I do not have an HT enabled CPU to run tests with, it may be better to be safe than sorry. So for now, if you have an HT enabled CPU, you might want to go ahead and install IAA.
    23. For people without HT enabled CPUs: Since there is little to no benefit to IAA software under Windows XP, and since I have seen IAA software interfere with CD burning and Power Management; I recommend not installing it. This is just my personal preference. Some people in the forum like IAA. In the end do whatever you are most comfortable with.
    24. Now is the time you want to install your LAN drivers. Depending on your motherboard and whether you are using a PCI NIC or onboard NIC, Windows may or may not have drivers installed already. If you are using onboard LAN, go get your Asus CDROM, put it in and install the LAN drivers ONLY. Do not install any LAN Utility software if possible. Follow all instructions rebooting if required.
    25. Now plug in your network cable and open Internet explorer to see if you can get online. If you have any troubles getting online ask for help in the forum.
    26. Go to Windows Update and install all available ?non driver? updates. If some updates need to be installed by themselves, the site will prompt you. If this happens you will want to return to Windows Update after rebooting to get the remainder of any ?non driver? updates.
Update There is one Critical Update you may want to leave until the end. The update is Q328310. With this update a rare timy number of software packages and drivers may generate an "ikernel.exe" error when they are installed. So if you want to be on the safe side, please leave this Critical Update until everything else is installed. Hopefully a better fix will be avaiable soon.
**Temporary note due to testing under way: Please do not install the non critical Windows XP update called 814995. Until I and others can finish testing this update, it should be left until last **
**Temporary note 2: There is a security patch Q811493 that can cause a reduction in your computers responsiveness and performance. Please review Microsoft tech doc MS03-013 HERE. After reviewing the document, decide for yourself if you need this secuirty patch for your environment. Microsoft is aware this patch reduces performance and they are actively working on a fix. **
    27. Once all ?non driver? Windows Updates are installed, continue to the next step.
    28. Once back at the desktop, open Internet Explorer and come here to http://www.asusboards.com Once at Asusboards, come into the forum and find this Guide and scroll down to step 31. Also be sure to bookmark Asusboards so you can find your way back easily. The reason for doing this is, in the steps ahead you may be asked to click on some links here in the Guide. This will save you time from hunting links down yourself.
    29. Click on the following link to install the latest security patched version of Windows XP Messenger. Even if you have no plans on using this application, it is wise to at least be sure it?s patched. Click the following link. Link And on the webpage, click the ?Download? button. Then just follow the onscreen instructions. Once Messenger is updated, again enter Messenger and verify that it is NOT set to run when Windows starts up. Once that?s all done, FIRST close all Internet Explorer windows, then close and disable Messenger. Due to an MS bug if you don?t do it in this order you might get an error message.
    30. Now is when you want to update the drivers for any PCI cards you have OTHER THAN your video card, sound card, and TV Tuner card. Video, sound, and any device that relies on video and sound should have their drivers installed last. Try whenever possible to use WHQL certified drivers for best compatibility and system stability.
    31. Now you want to install your video card drivers. Here are the links to get the latest drivers for your video card - ATI nVidia Once downloaded install the drivers following all onscreen directions.
32a. for non AIW ATI cards: (For ATI card owners: When you go to the link above, be sure to download both the latest ATI Drivers and the Control Panel. Then use the following method for installing the drivers. Install the ATI driver. DO NOT REBOOT. Install the ATI Control Panel. DO NOT REBOOT. Go into the Administrative tools of the Windows Control Panel and then go into "Services." Make sure the ATI Smart Service is set to run "automatically.? NOW reboot.)
32b. For ATI AIW cards: First install the TV-Capture-WDM codecs. DO NOT REBOOT.
    33. nVidia cards nVidia drivers install pretty much straightforwardly.
    34. Once the video drivers and software are installed and you are back at the desktop, go ahead and install your Sound Card drivers.
    35. Now install any TV Tuner card drivers if you have such a device.
    36. If you did not install Critical Update Q328310 as suggested in the updated notes in Step 28, now is a good time to install it. Just go to Windows Update and install the Critical Update.
**Temporary note due to testing under way: Go back to Windows Update and install the non critical update 814995 **
    37. Once everything is complete, see if you can find $40-60 in your piggy bank. Head over to Walmart or CompUsa and grab a copy of Norton Utilities. You?re not going to want to install it, just run a utility from the disk.
Once you have this in hand; pop the disk in the CD drive and choose to "Launch Utilities from CD" Then choose Norton Windoctor and run the application. It should return a minimum of 17 to 30 errors. These are bugs / coding problems with Windows and actually is the lowest count for any MS OS so far. Therefore actually 17 to 30 errors isn?t bad for Microsoft...LOL.
Once the application is done running, choose the button called "Repair All" Let it do its thing and then exit the program and reboot the computer.
**This application itself is worth the full price of the Norton software. You?d be amazed how many problems with your computer it automatically fixes. It is a great stability tool. There are also lots of other good registry cleaning software packages out there. If you want to use another brand, be sure to read reviews and ask forum members what they recommend.
    38. You?re done CONGRATULATIONS! Enjoy your new system
If this is your first computer build then you have accomplished a great feat. Again congrats! Be sure to keep your operating system and Office applications up to date with the latest patches, service packs, and critical updates. If you have any questions, be sure to speak up and ask for help in the forum. There?s lots of smart and friendly people at Asusboards who would be glad to give you a hand.

  • IMac DV won't install new Operating System on erased HD

Hi all. My iMac recently failed on every boot up and as I only use it as a music jukebox (I have a 20" G5 iMac for other things), I thought I'd erase the Hard drive and reload Panther. It previously ran 10.3.9 very well.
The iMac boots up off the Panther CD and starts loading the system onto the Hard Drive, then about 3 minutes it gives the error "the installer has quit due to an unexpected error (exit code 0) , please restart your computer". It does this when trying to load Panther or Jaguar.
Not I am stuck, I have a HD which is recognised by the iMac but I can't load any operating system on. At start up without the Panther CD istalled, all I get now is the finder folder with a flashing question mark and apple face logo.
    I am desperate.....any suggestions.....

    Mike, thanks for the advice.
I did a futher test. I ran the Disk Utility at installation with the following results:
    1) select Maxtor 76.34 MB, clicked "erase" (with install os9 drivers selected)
    2) Got "setting up partition map", and "filesys on system" messages were both successful
    3) Ran First Aid on the volume "Untitled" disk Verify Disk command says "The volume verified appears to be OK. Ran First Aid on "76.34GB Maxtor" and got the same result.
    4) Continued with Install and got to "select a destination disk" and I selectd disc "untitled 76.3GB" then continue
    5) Clicked Install.
    6) Got the following messages: "Preparing the disk, preparing osx, preparing the base system, preparing essential system software, preparing the bsd subsystem then "you need to restart your computer" message.
It tends to be a different thing every time. Sometimes when I initially verify the volume or disc I get errors and have o do a repair. I get a message saying the repair has worked, but without a successful load result.
I guess I should be buying a new Hard Drive....
