Loading entire photos library crashes

The issue is the when I attempt to load my entire photo library from my iMac it crashes and goes back to the home screen.
I am running up to date versions on all OS's and events and smaller albums in iPhoto or individual albums in finder all work fine,
The issue is only when I go to the entire library (about 18000 photos) the screen sits on 'loading' for about a minute and just crashes back to the home screen.
I have started getting the issue on a brand new version 3 device which had been working fine for a week. I reported it to Apple support who think it may be a hardware issue and suggested I should get a replacement from the vendor.
However I also have a version 2 device in the bedroom which having checked yesterday (18th) also shows exactly the same symptoms.
I emphasise the fact that I use this functionality almost daily and it was working fine until last Thu 13 March 2014.
I am Calling Apple TV support again with latest issues today!

Update
Apple support have been working with me today and the problem is still not resolved. Here's what I've been up to...
Apple suggested I carry out the following:
Press Alt when starting iPhoto and create a new library.
Chuck some pix in the new library and share with AppleTV
RESULT: All worked fine and it would coz I only had 25 pix to view!
Delete old Library and go back to original one.
Next
Press Alt+Ctrl when starting iPhoto and start a repair process one at a time in the following order...
Repair Permissions
Repair Thumbnails
Repair Database
This took a couple of hours and I still could not load my entire library.
I then decided to re introduce my pix into Home Sharing 5000 at a time...
5000 took 2 mins to load and worked fine.
10000 took 3 mins to load and worked fine
15000 took 4 mins to load and worked fine
19000 took 2 mins to crash!!!
I realise there is a lot of Pix in my library but I have never experienced theses issues before last week. It is without doubt a reduction in service caused by an Apple update.
Getting back in touch with Apple Support....

  • I lost entire photo library in iPhoto.  How do I retrieve the lost library?

I went to open iPhoto only to find my entire photo library was gone.  I have no idea how this has happened.  I backed up my photos on an external hard drive but cannot access them that way.  I keep getting a message saying it's a backed up version and I have to hit "option" while I open iPhoto.  That is not working either.  How can I find these lost photos?

What kind of backup of your library do you have?  If it is aTime Machine backup, see this document:

I went to open iPhoto only to find my entire photo library was gone.  I have no idea how this has happened.
What did you do, before this happened?  Have you been updating or upgrading software?  Moved your iPhoto Library to a new location on external drives?
Have there been crashes? which version of iPhoto or MacOS X do you have?

  • Can I use icloud to safely store my entire photo library?

I need to safely backup of entire iphoto library, so that I can open up storage space on my macbook.  Will icloud provide me with safe storage for my entire library?  I understand photostream pushes 1000 most recent photos to all of my devices, but what steps do I need to take to back up my entire photo library on my icloud?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can't store the iPhoto library on iCloud. Photo Stream was designed as a sync service, and photos on Photo Stream are deleted after 30 days. You can use a different cloud service as Dropbox, but I recommend you to store it on an external drive

  • I bought a new Mac Pro from an Apple store, it was sold as factory sealed, but it's reconditioned - it has some strangers entire photo, library from 2003 to 2011 in the trash bin.

. I bought a new Mac Pro from an Apple store 2 days ok, it was sold as factory sealed, but it's reconditioned - it has some strangers entire photo, library from 2003 to 2011 in the trash bin.
I was bought a Mac book pro as a birthday gift from the Apple Store in Leicester, after completing the initial set up procedure, I noticed that  the trash bin was full of some one's entire photo collection from 2003 to 2011.
This is entirely unacceptable for Apple: How long have Apple been fobbing of consumers who believe they were genuinely purchasing a 'new' Mac book?
How is it that I have someones entire photo collection on my 'branch new Mac Book Pro' - these photos included wedding photo's, birthday celebrations, family celebrations and children. Its a serious breach of data protection, it's an invasion of some poor persons privacy and private photo collection. What concerns me the most, is what could have happened if those photo's had fallen into the wrong hands. We managed to trace, locate and contact the person who the photo's belong to within 10 mins using information taken from their wedding album.
Understandably these people are also very distressed that their personal photos are on my brand new Mac Book pro.
I would like details of who to contact in regards this incident.

  • Accidentally uploaded entire photo library - 18,000 photos - to one Book. How do I get them out???

Help! I accidentally uploaded my entire photo library -- 18,000 photos -- to the Book I am working on. Now everything runs slow, and I can't figure out how to get them out quickly. It takes several seconds to just delete one photo. I don't want to delete the entire book, because I already spent a lot of time laying out 30 pages. How do I get rid of all the extra photos from the book?

    Four  choices
1 - delete the book and start over
2 - delete the extra photos in the book
3 - resotore your backup from before you did this
4 - leave them in the book and ignore the extras

  • How can I possible lose my entire photo library/ referenced master image file if I have downloaded all my images directly onto Aperture?

How can I possible lose my entire photo library/ referenced master image file if I have downloaded all my images directly onto Aperture?

CeliaJane, you need to distinguish between the Aperture Library and the Aperture Application.
Aperture stores your images in a database, and it is this database that we have to find and probably to repair, not the application (hopefully). And since you do not see any images, I suspect that Aperture created a new, empty Aperture Library, and you are now viewing this empty library. Usully the library sits in your Pictures fiolder.
Look into your Pictures folder, if you see a file with a colorful icon with three pictures, called something.aplibrary, as shown above. And also enter ".applibrary" into the "Spotlight" searchfield in the upper right corner of your screen. If you have more than one Library, you should be able to find them this way.
The largest file you find will probably be the correct library.
When you have found the correct file called aperturexxxx.aplibrary, try to open it in "First Aid" mode.
Select the Library and press down "command" and "option" key at the same time, while you double click the library.
Now the First Aid dialogue should appear:
Select: Repair Permissions" and see if you can open the Library again. If it did not help, try the other two options in turn.

Turn iTunes Match on, it's $25 per year.

  • IPhoto 5.0.4 has suddenly stopped working. It loads the photo library and then freezes. Rebuilding the library has no effect which has about 3.5MB of data. PowerBook G4 OS 10.5.8

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7)  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • IPad Photo Library crash at startup

    Hey
I just got my new iPad and it is doing great i only have 1 and a half problem.
First problem is that after i transferred my holiday photos to my iPad, the photo app crash at startup. I had about 20 photos on it (downloaded from safari) and after i transferred about 300 over it crashes. I have tried to restore it, but it didn't work.
The other problem is that sometimes when i am writing in landscapemode the "E" or "O" key (depends on what side the home button is) writes 2 letters instead of 1, it seems that sometimes the touch wont recognize my finger (i can see the same when using a drawing app, sometimes it is like there is a wall of "dead touch" and sometimes there isn't).
    Hopefully someone can help me
Im living a far away from an apple store so cant just go there and get help

I currently have over a thousand photos on my iPad, most are synced by iphoto from my laptop. You may have a corrupted photo library file which is causing the crash. Have you tried importing them onto your computer then deleting them from the iPad and starting again?

  • Transfer entire Photo Library

I need to transfer my Photo Library from my iMac to my laptop. I tried sharing but a bunch of pictures did not show. The Library holds 900 pictures. Is there an easy way?
    Choya Kid

Does your laptop library have photos in it that you want to combine with the other library or do you just want to replace the laptop's library with the iMac's?
If it's latter then just copy the iMac's iPhoto Library folder intact into the Pictures folder on the laptop.
If you want to merge the iMac's library into the laptop's, you'll need to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. That will let you copy rolls from one to the other while maintaining keywords, comments, albums, etc. It currently is the only way to merge two or more libraries and keep the organization/metadata information intact.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Iphoto trash deleted and lost entire photo library

Hi, I have emptied my iphoto trash which deleted my entire iphoto library. Help!

    Restore from your backup.

  • How to keep entire photo library on ext drive and only slideshows on laptop

I recently did an erase/install upgrade to Tiger on my g4 powerbook laptop. My previous iPhoto 4 library is safely backed up on an external drive. I would like to keep the entire library on that drive and import new photos only to that drive and edit on that drive. I would like to have a second iPhoto library on my laptop that only contains slideshows that I have created on the external drive. I received mixed opinions at the genius bar: One guy told me that I would end up with a big mess and another guy told me it would be straightforward and easy.
So this is what I think I need to do:
    1. Open iPhoto '08 on my powerbook (it wants to upgrade the library even though there is nothing currently in it. Is it OK to let it upgrade?)
    2. Open it again while holding alt/option and ask it to create a new iPhoto library on the external drive (should I name it something unique?).
    3. Drag my backed-up iPhoto library folder (its contents) into the new iPhoto library on the external drive (I imagine it will want to update them as well).
    4. When I want to move a slideshow over to my laptop, export a copy of the slideshow to a laptop desktop folder (so it sends copies only) and then move them into my laptop iPhoto library (I have no idea whether the slideshow order and settings would be preserved).
I hope my thinking is right and would appreciate any comments or suggestions?
I am concerned that when I connect my camera to my laptop, it will want to open the laptop iPhoto library and import there instead of to the external drive library. How do I get the pics from my camera to the external drive library?
    Again, thanks!

    rbfactor:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Regarding Step 3: do not import the old library into the new one. You'll get the modified files as regular files and lose your keywords, tiles, albums, slideshows, etc.
What I would do is put your full library on the external HD. Then create a new library on your PB. In the primary library create an album with the pictures you want for the sideshow. Then use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager tocopy that album from the external HD library to your PB library. Unfortunately you cannot copy over the slideshow settings or the music used. You'll have to have your iTunes library on the PB and set the slideshow settings once your have the photos on the PB.
The alternative is to export the slideshow as a QT file and copy that to the PB and run with QT player.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Importing entire photo library from Photoshop.

The Photoshop library is organized in the traditional manner of folders, sub-folders, files, etc using Bridge. How do I import this entire structure into Aperture 3 while preserving the hierarchy? Can I do this in more or less one move or must I rebuild the library one folder at a time? Thanks for any suggestions

I have generally exported all the photos into a single folder and then copied them across.
What is the problem with simply copying your iPhoto Library folder across. When you open the new iPhoto it will say the Library is an old one but it should ask you if you want to update it ....... to which you say yes.
However, if you want to be absolutely sure, post this question on the iMovie forum where there are lots of iMovie experts.

  • Itunes will not load entire music library only random songs to iPhone

My iTunes will only load random songs and not my entire library to my iPhone.

Beatport sells a choice of WAV or MP3. I have bought MP3s from Beatport and they added to iTunes without a problem. Just in case there is something going on with the files, try treating them with a 3rd party tag cleanup program such as MP3 Validator.

  • HT4431 IPhoto11 Erased my entire photo library.

I'm not sure when IPhoto even updated to 11 because I did not do it, but I now have Iphoto11.  I was completely shocked to find that I now have zero photos in my library, my library was completely erased with the update.  I am devastated.  I am just praying there is a way to retrieve all of my photos.  Any guidance would be truly appreciated.  Is it possible to do it through ICloud.  I just can't believe Apple would let this happen. Thank you!

Is there an iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder? What size is it?
By the way, iPhoto did not update itself to iPhoto 11, that required someone with a credit card buying it. If you don't now when this happened then how can you blame this update for the problem? How can you blame Apple for it when you don't even know who or when someone updated your computer? And, frankly, it's not Mozy's  fault that you don't have a back up, it's your fault. Why didn't you pay for the service or make an alternative back up?
