Loading Freeware/Shareware

I have a Powerbook G4 (12") used by my son. He has downloaded some freeware for peer-to-peer file sharing (Either LIMEWIRE or FROSTWIRE).
This application does not load on this mac. The icon bounces 3 times in the dock, then evaporates. It never launches.
I have changed all his permissions in the System preferences, but it makes no difference.
In desparation: I erased and reloaded TIGER 10.4, but still I get the same problem.
Any ideas?

Hello Philly:
I am not familiar with either of those applications. However, since you reloaded OS X, the problem lies with the applications, not the Apple software. Either the download failed, or the applications are not playing well with a Mac.

  • Must have Freeware/Shareware for Mac

Hi, I'm new to Mac and I keep looking for any freeware/shareware must haves for my iMac. I have XRG, Onyx, Temp monitor, MacJanitor downloaded at the moment. What else is out there to keep the Mac running trouble free?
    Thanks

Well, as far as I know, there are no real must have apps/utilities to keep your computer running well. It should just work.
However, if you want to be a "power user", then there are always nice little tweak apps. If you can be specific as to what types of things you want to tweak, I'm sure people will be able to help you out. I personally am not much for a power user on Macs. I got sick of being a power user, so that's why I got a mac. It just works. hehehe. But the option is always there.
Everyone is always talking about "Cocktail" ( http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.html ) as being a must have app. I've got it, and I've run it before, but for the most part my opinion of it is, "meh".
I guess as a means to keep your machine from getting bogged down, rather then going out and searching for stuff that people say you need, but just look for stuff that does what you need it to do as you discover a need to do it.
Oh okay. so I guess there is something you do need. I discovered the need to monitor my CPU usage and memory usage without having to open up the activity monitor all the time. The tool I found was MenuMeters ( http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/ )
So I guess there are two things I can recommend

  • Partition Question - RE: Freeware

    Hello!
I am returning to edit video after a 3 year break, so I am pretty lost.
    1. I have heard that there is freeware to partition my MacBook Pro, but that apple doesn't support it. Even so, I have jeard that it works well. Can anyone suggest what freeware / shareware that I may have heard of?
    2. If I partition my MacBook Pro, will I have to reinstall Photshop, plugs ins, etc? I think I have to; yet it has been implied that this is not necessary if using the correct software.
Any help with these things are greatly appreciated. I am heading (home) to Cambodia in a few days, and I am trying to get all the info I can before I return to the land of slow / no internet.
    Thanks in advance.

    One more thing:
I am not worried about the data; I left the some of my software (I know, stupid) in the USA by accident. As a result I have to wait for someone to bring over things like MS Office, PhotoShop, etc. I think I have to reload that if I partition, because if I partition, I have to reformat. My understanding (or misunderstanding) is that there is some freeware available that allows me to partition without doing all this...maybe I'm wrong. In any event, I think I have to just test it and see. However, in the past I always kept the internet software off the computer I edited on. If this resulted in less problems, I dunno, but no one wants a system to go down when clients are freaking out, etc. On the other hand I need to be able to travel light; only one computer and a few drives, and one small camera. Maybe 2 cameras if I get more money.
    Thanks again!

  • Where are all the downloadable free/shareware games?

There were tons of games, freeware, shareware as well as those that cost money. They could be downloaded from the Apple site. Now when I go to the download section and choose 'games' I go to the Apple store and see exactly 42 games to choose from, none of which are free/shareware. So where are all the games?

I don't know about those devs. Seems to me like Apple is less concerned with niceties for the Apple community these days and dumped the free downloadable games 'cause they are more interested in making more money. Oh well. Thanks Dahveed.

  • A Choir Query: from FinalePM to LogicXP (and back)

    The Challenge:
A Mac-based filmmaker/video editor anxiously seeks advice from experienced users of Finale and Logic Express who know the inner mysteries of MIDI (and may also be proficient with GarageBand).
In a nutshell, I'm struggling to understand the simplest way (if there is such a thing) to add some specific non-orchestral sounds to my Finale PrintMusic Instrument List, to beef up the playback of some original compositions.
And failing that, the simplest way to use some of the specific SmartMusic SoundFont samples included with FinalePM in a GarageBand or a LogicExpress project.
The Rest Is Background and Elaboration:
I've spent the past few weeks using Finale's PrintMusic2006 to develop some musical underscores for a short film I'm now editing (using FinalCutPro 5). The simple arrangements I've created using PrintMusic's built-in SoftSynth player and the SoundFont instruments package so far work pretty well as demos to accompany the printed notation, and that was their original intention. But parts of them actually sound not too bad, and are close to being useable for the film itself. So now I'd like to see if I can take the playback aspect even further, and use PrintMusic (either on its own or in combination with other software) to generate a more polished final output.
So far though, my experience with the other music software available to me has been frustrating:
    - GarageBand3 will import a MIDI file exported from PrintMusic, but only at a single tempo. This one-tempo-only-per-project limitation is a major roadblock for me, because while this music is hardly sophisticated, it does have tempo variations, as well as key and time signature changes.
    - SoundtrackPro, supposedly a higher-end app than GarageBand, won't even import a standard MIDI file. (What's up with that, anyway? I still haven't quite figured out where STP lies on the GarageBand-LogicExpress-LogicPro spectrum.)
    - and LogicExpress (which I don't yet own but am testing a trial version of) - aside from being a whole new learning curve I really don't have time to get into right now - doesn't even have basic versions of the software instruments I'm trying to find better quality versions of, such as Harpsichord, Bagpipe (yes, the music involves a very strange mix), and most of all, choral/choir effects (more human-sounding Oohs, Ahhs, Doos, and Mmms, both male and female).
    The Arrangements:
The instruments I've used in PrintMusic for playback of the different versions of the film's music are:
    - Church Organ,
    - Choir Aahs
    - Voice Oohs,
    - Bagpipe,
    - Harpsichord,
    - Tubular Bells,
    - Woodblock,
    - Overdriven Guitar,
    - and a couple of bg synth effects.
The organ, harpsichord, guitar, bell and woodblock all sound not too bad in context. The Bagpipe's a bit wimpy, but both it and the Harpsichord are at least better than the ones the Apple apps offer - which is to say, none! And I was especially disappointed to see that even with the addition of hundreds of dollars worth of JamPacks those same apps still don't appear to offer any human voice/choral Software Instrument sounds whatsoever.
I do see such sounds available for purchase at sites such as these:
    http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/details.phtml?sku=PS13
    and
    http://www.bestservice.de/detail.asp/en/vocalchoir/extended_classicalchoir/813442a66p249p64p49
(with of course much higher-end and higher-priced options also available).
But the question I'm hoping someone out there can help me with is:
    - Can PrintMusic make use of these kinds of samples (either these specific ones, or any other kinds in any other formats -- including the Software Instruments already included in Logic and/or GarageBand)?
    - And are there sites from which specific software instruments can be purchased and downloaded a la carte (the same way you can easily preview and then download individual typeface fonts from any number of freeware, shareware, and commercial sites)?
Because even though it's very much a notation program first and an audio-file creation program second, Finale's simple PrintMusic is right now much closer to having the sounds I want for this particular project than the much costlier LogicExpress. But Is there in fact any way to selectively add to the number and variety of Instruments which can be accessed in PrintMusic's Instrument List? And can it utilize additional software instruments such as the choral sounds on Peter Siedlaczek`s "Extended Classical Choir" noted above?
And if (as I just did) I download an ".sf2" formatted sample of a bagpipe, how do I get a Finale (or a LogicExpress for that matter) to actually see the darn thing and make it accessible -- is it as simple as just placing the file in the correct folder? I've scoured the manuals, and I still don't know.
(I see on the MakeMusic site how for the full Finale "exciting libraries of additional instruments are available from Garritan and Native Instruments", which makes me think that instruments in the correct format can indeed be added to a Finale Instrument List -- although things like the Garritan Personal Orchestra package wouldn't help me right now, since the few specific sounds I'm seeking are choral and/or non-orchestral.)
So I'm feeling more than a little lost right now in what seems like a minefield of different and often incompatible synthesizers, sequencers, samplers and samples out there. I'm really hoping someone can at least begin to steer me in the right direction on this question.
Very much looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, Justin. (Sorry about the slow response -- I'm a bit swept up with March Break kid stuff.)
Frankly, hiring a tech to help you through the
process is perhaps the best option. A few hours is
    all it would take.
Attempts to go in that direction have so far met with limited success, but I'll keep beating the bushes. (Having some trouble connecting with someone with the right combination of experience in the right combination of apps -- Finale, LogicExpress, different samples in different formats, etc.)
I come from Logic Pro so there may
be a few differences (one of the is the EXS24 is
EXSP24-every detail concerning limitations I do not
    know).
    See what I mean!
Otherwise, I can make a few suggestions to get
you started. If you do this often and really want to
focus on sound quality you'll want a sound library
which is forward compatible. You can then compose in
Finale and move the sequence over to Logic and work
on the sound. If you want to work with soundfonts
DLSMusic device will load them up.
I was getting the impression I'd need a 3rd party utility like SoundFont Synth (http://andydrabble.users.btopenworld.com/soundfontsynth/moreinfo.html) that can use sound font files in GarageBand, Logic, etc. Are you saying that LogicXP can access ".sf2" files, as well as the MakeMusic GM Instruments included with Finale's PrintMusic2006, directly -- without the help of intermediaries like SoundFont Synth? If true, that would be great for me -- but I'm finding the LogicXP documentation more than a little inscrutable so far, and can't find the section that tells me in a nice step-by-step way how to do that.
Drabble's SoundFont Synth does come with exactly that kind of step-by-step guide for using the program with GarageBand, which I'll copy/paste here for anyone interested:
    ==============
SoundFont Synth is an Audio Unit plug-in designed to make the synthesis of
natural instruments using Sound Fonts, available to GarageBand or any other Audio Unit compatible host.
    Main Features
    1. Uses Apple's excellent DLS synthesizer engine to produce high quality sounds.
    2. Uses industry standard SoundFont files (.sf2) thousands of which are widely available for free download from the Internet.
    3. Passes Apple's Audio Unit Validation tests.
    4. Can use Pitch Bend wheel to control low pass, high pass, band pass and notch filters.
    5. Compatible with GarageBand 1, 2, and 3..
    Getting Started (GarageBand)
Start up GarageBand and create a 'Software Instrument' track within your
    GarageBand project.
Select the 'Track/Show Track Info' menu item to display the track info window.
Select 'SoundFont Synth' from the 'Generator' pull down menu.
Using the button to the right of the Generator pull down, open up the
    Audio Unit editor.
The Sound Font field will default to 'QuickTime Music Synthesizer'. If you have
a Sound Font available on your computer then select it using the 'Choose' button.
Select an Instrument from the 'Instrument' pull down menu.
Using an external keyboard or the GarageBand keyboard, play a few notes
in the C3-C4 range to hear the notes play.
    =============
And following those excellent instructions I was indeed able to start using the MakeMusic GM Instruments in GB3. But when I wrote the author and asked if he had a version of those instructions written in "LogicExpress-ese", this was his reply:
    John,
I wish I could be of help but I have no knowledge of Logic Express or music for that matter.
I am basically a Computer Designer and Programmer.
To make it work with Logic, you need to follow the same procedure, which I assume is documented, as for any "Music Device" AudioUnit.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
    Andy.
So, since LogicPro is way out of my price (& complexity) range for this particular project, I'm back to wondering both how and if Express -- either on its own, or in combination with something like SoundFont Synth, will let me incorporate the following elements:
    1) some better quality (but still affordable) human voice/choir sounds, such as the ones offered at:
    http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/details.phtml?sku=PS13,
    OR http://www.bestservice.de/detail.asp/en/vocalchoir/extended_classicalchoir/813442a66p249p64p49
    2) some ".sf2" files from sources such as www.sf2midi.com,
    3) some of the original MakeMusic GM Instrument sounds included with Finale's PrintMusic2006
    4) As well as possibly some of the software instruments included with Logic/GarageBand and maybe some of the JamPacks.
Now assuming I'm using LogicExpress, that last one's a no-brainer of course. But I'm still fuzzy on the workflow involving the first three, and they're the ones I really need for this specific project (and that's all this venture into music production is about for now -- I need to get back to what I should be doing, which is the video editing).
So given that this is not something I'm gong to be doing all that often in the future, should I be considering avoiding Logic altogether, and using what some people tell me are much more beginner-user-friendly apps like Tracktion2 (http://www.mackie.com/products/tracktion/tracktion.html), or MetroSE (http://www.sagantech.biz/products/metro6se.htm)?
Would love to hear from anyone who's used either of the above, especially in terms of accessing the kinds of additional software instruments I listed earlier.
[...] One of the problems is that
Logic has no GM soundset, so getting an AU which you
use with both apps is important. EXS24 will load the
soundfonts if they are in the correct folder-you can
leave them or conert them to EXS24 format. So just
mix and layer until things sound good. You can use
Logic for all of this but you sound like you're more
comfortable in Finale. Let me know what you think so
    far...
Am certainly comforatble with the idea of composing in Finale, then moving over into something which easily lets me add the specific instruments I want to "upgrade", while still keeping some of the MakeMusic GM sounds from Finale's Instrument List.
But am still unsure about which apps (or combination thereof) I should be commiting to and start mastering the basics of -- something with the right combination of affordability and simplicity to get this specific job done (yet not TOO simple, as in GarageBand's frustrating inability to vary tempos).
And I'm also just still trying to get my brain around Audio Objects vs. Audio Units, and samplers vs. sequencers, and EXS24 vs. EXSP24, and channels vs. tracks, and on and on. Any recommendations of sites with basic "MIDI and the Mac - 101" plain-English primers would also be gratefully accepted!
    Thanks,
    jb

  • PowerBook Seems to be Running out of Memory

So, my computer has been slowing down a lot lately. I got it new two years ago, and I'm not sure if it's normal for it to be slowing down this much.
When I change the volume, it takes a couple seconds for the sound and icon to appear, and it also slows down any applications I'm running.
If I try to open two or three programs like Safari or Mail at the same time, it can take up to a minute to load them all whereas it used to do it in around 10 seconds. Safari also has been unexpectedly quitting a lot lately.
I currently have 256 megs of RAM. Do you think I need more? Or is there something easier/cheaper I can do?

How much free disc space do you have? With only 256MB RAM, you probably routinely use a lot of swap space. If your hard drive is getting full, you may be running out of continguous disc space for swap files.
matteo.85 - I've often left my powerbook on and running background tasks (research analyses) for as long as two weeks straight. I used to do the same thing with its predecessor, a 2nd rev. TiBook. Both machines run just fine, and leaving a laptop on for extended periods should not harm it in any way.
What a brody was getting at was the standard "maintenance" scripts (daily, weekly and monthly scripts that clean out log files, backup log contents, and clear out archived logs) normally are set to run in the wee hours of the morning (like 3:00a.m.). If those have not been allowed to run in awhile, the log files (in /private/var/log) may be getting huge and eating up a lot of disc space. MacJanitor, Onyx, and other freeware/shareware apps will clear these out for you if you shut your machine off (or sleep it) at night. Macaroni will reschedule the scripts to a time of your choosing (you can also do that manually yourself, by editing their plist files).

  • New mac mini, why so much hard disk space used

    Hi All
Just bought a new Mac Mini, 1.4 with the 80gb disk,
After powering up and setting up etc, i noticed that over 10gb of the 80gb hard disk was already used out of the box!!!
How come all that disk space is used, im sure the OS doesnt need that amount of room? I have found a folder of about 1.2gb with a load of garage band samples and loops in, but where is the rest hiding???? Seems a whole waste of space to me??
    Thanks

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Belkin USB and Firewire Hub, Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse

You have heard correctly, most Mac software, including GarageBand, can be deleted by moving the application (or whole folder if it's in one) to the Trash & emptying the Trash. Some programs may install some support files, but usually not until they are run for the first time. Those few programs that do scatter bits around (can you say Microsoft?) should come with an uninstaller.
There are freeware/shareware programs to remove unneeded language files. DeLocalizer & Monolingual come to mind.
But, since you are setting this Mac mini up from scratch, you might want to do what I do with a new Mac. I erase & reinstall the OS & bundled software from the CD/DVDs that come with it, doing a custom install of both so that I get only what I want. For me, this was important because I don't need any additional printer drivers & I already had full versions of Office & iWork to install.

  • Do awm 10.2.0.3.0A  be the same awm 10.2.0.3.0 ???

    hi all,
there is many post talk about awm 10.2.0.3.0 and its advances like: Sparcity Advisor ...
I use currently the awm 10.2.0.3.0A and in this version, there's not the function Sparcity Advisor. Can you explain me how to get the awm 10.2.0.3.0? What's differents between this 2 version (freeware, shareware)?
    Thanks !

The sparsity advisor is displayed when you right mouse click on a cube. The readme file shows the following information:

  • Safari - sluggish performance

Since upgrading to Leopard (on my MacBook Pro) Safari shows a very sluggish performance, page take over 10 seconds to load. I cleared the cache but the problem persists. Any ideas?

Have you guys ran REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS? and Cleaned out the disk cache?
Have you tried to startup the computer and holding SHIFT down (old extensions off trick)?
See if problems persist after these things. Sometimes it's a 3rd party app or extension. I've seen these issues from all the freeware shareware stuff over the various versions of Mac OS X.

  • Camera profile for Canon 600D - is it available

    Hi,
I have recently taken a whole bunch of photos whilst on holiday.  I took them in RAW and have loaded them into Lightroom 3 (version 3.6).  I thought I'd try following Scott Kelby's 7-point system.  However, in the Camera Calibration panel, I only have 6 options available: Adobe standard; camera faithful; camera landscape; camera neutral; camera portrait and camera standard.  On p.122 of his Lightroom 3 book, about a dozen or more seem to be available.  Is this because he has created his own favourites or is there something else I should download?
Has anyone used the download 'x=image+kit' on the Adobe site?  I was wondering if this was what I might be missing.
Thanks for any help.  I realise I might be asking a basic question but I'm still a bit of a novice with digital image processing software.
    Alison.

The 'x=image+kit' was created for use with LR2 (PV2003).  There are profiles, presets, and other tools that are LR3 (PV2010) compatible here:

  • (1 x iPod) + (2 x Macs)

I have one iPod and two Macs - an iMac and an iBook. I have two slightly different iTunes libraries on each computer. The iMac is new, and will be used as my primary computer and will have the most up-to-date iTunes library collection. The iBook is my secondary machine, but I still want to have an identical iTunes library on each computer.
My question is, what is the best way to sync the two iTunes libraries?
Both machines are frequently networked, and I know that it is easy just to drag the files over from one computer to another when they are networked, replacing the old folders with the newer ones from the desktop machine. Is there a better, more efficient way? My fear is accidently overwriting a newer iTunes collection, as I often import CDs whilst I am on the road with my iBook.

You need to authorize your new iMac for to play the music you have purchased on iTunes. I think you can authorize up to five computers using one Apple ID/iTunes account.
Then, just copy your files from the iBook over to your iMac and they should play.
Don't bother trying to copy from the iPod, though. There is some form of copyright protection, although there are freeware/shareware utilities that allow you to copy from your iPod from to your computer. All they really do is make your music files visible when your iPod is connected to your computer.
There are many ways of transfering files from one computer to another, so it is a case of what suits you, and what is available to you, whether you have your computers networked, or whether you prefer to copy the files to CD from your iBook, then load onto your iMac.
But you need to authorize your iMac to play your purchased files with the same Apple ID as your iBook. That's all, really.
BTW, I have networked my machines using ethernet and transferred the files manually. It's faster than airport, as I have several gigabytes to transfer over.

I.e., an app that show me the read/write speeds for a Network Attached Storage connected via Gigabit ethernet would be great.

  • Concept J2ee

Im new of J2ee and Im trying to design/develop a standard 3-tier system. Well I have to choose all the software tools (trying to spend as less as possible), I read a lot of documents about different products, and now I have mess in my mind :-)
Everything seems to be J2ee compatible!! Can someone give me some advice or links to articles? I would like to know the software products used by someone who already implemented a medium system, and the criteria used to choose them. SOmetimes I have the impression that the words like containers, application servers etc. are not clearly used
    Thanks Marco

By 3-tier I'm guessing you mean:
Presentation - JSP's Servlets, applets, Java Beans (not EJB!)
Business Logic - Session Beans (EJB), Message Driven Beans (EJB)
    Persistence - Entity Beans (EJB)
Now there are two servers / containers / engines you need to be aware of, Servlet Engines and EJB engines. For these I would start by looking at the following:
Tomcat Servlet Engine (from jakarta.apache.org) : Runs Servlets, processes JSPS, manages Java Beans (think data objects).
JBoss EJB Engine (latest version includes Tomcat) : Runs EJBs.
As for tools, well yes there are loads. I use the free JCreator as my editor, Ant (jakarta) as my build tool, JTest is supposed to be good for testing but haven't used it (www.junit.org), Struts is a good Servlet/JSP/JavaBean framework (jakarta), and finally Log4J (jakarta) takes the headache out of system logging.
These are all open source / freeware / shareware products so check out their licences and realise they might not scale or be supported as well as the "for-sale" products.
    Good luck
    Paul.

  • LOOKING FOR SOME INSTRUMENT SOFTWARE

Hey does anybody know some really good quality instrument software that I can run midi with logic? I know about the Jam packs but from what I hear they are not as great as they should be. Im looking for drums, orchestra, piano, brass, strings etc. Any help would be great, thanx.

whoa, first i gotta say that the jam packs ARE Excellent! i was a GarageBand user first who has since made the jump to Logic (currently 7.2 and about to upgrade to 8). the jam packs for me were a must for GBand although some of those types of sounds are already in Logic.
For the record jam Packs include the following:
    1. Loops. There are 2 kinds of loops. The first is a "real instrument loop" that is a recording of a real musician in a real studio playing real instruments. These are of high quality though i don't personally use them very much except for some of the percussion loops. However these loops have been analyzed and will conform to tempos and keys (within reason) automatically. You may also cut them up at will. i have created some good Amen type breaks as i make Drum and Bass. The new vocal jam pack has some very well recorded and produced samples.
The second kind of loops are midi loops. These can conform to all tempos and keys and can be re-arranged at will. Midi loops can be applied to any Software Instrument these are great if you find something close but want to alter it or for analyzing certain styles. Some of the midi guitar loops suprisingly realistic.
    2. All jam packs include Software Instruments. These are of the EXS24 type but can be loaded into both logic and garageband which doesn't feature the EXS24 as it appears in logic, though the basic functionality is there. These instruments can be loaded into GBand and Logic directly. In logic they are in the channel strip settings under GarageBand. They load a simplified version of EXS. The jam packs make use of the instruments by providing loops made with those instruments. Of course you can use the loops and instruments separately.
    Here is the break down.
The ReMix Jam Pack (my favorite) is a collection of synthetic sounds primarily for Dance Music. you will find 808's 909's though no 303's. These were made in cooperation with Roland (which is rare) you will also find some great although somewhat simplified synth emulations. The loops are primarily synths and drums but they cover almost every genre of dance from House, Trance Electro and Drum and Bass.
The World Music Jam Pack covers a lot of ground (literally) with asian, latin european, and african instruments and loops. Some of these are great the sitar and steel drums are awesome. Some are disappointing the Bag Pipes for instance. However bag pipes are kind of hard to do and to program correctly however i did download a Amazing Grace midi file and they actually sounded really good.
The Rhythm Section Jam Pack is a more Rock oriented one with electric and acoustic guitars and basses, horns drum etc. there a really good loops and software instruments. Since these instruments are so well known and since people are so used to hearing them played by real musicians careful programming of the virtual instruments is a must for a finished song. But these can be great for sketches to be played by a real musician later. The drum loops are wonderful, very usable and a singer songwriter's dream come true.
The Symphonic Orchestra Jam Pack has exactly what you think it would. I feel less qualified to give an opinion on this but can probably safely say that this would not be able to compete with a larger and much more expensive dedicated symphonic instrument. They are usable for a quick spot of drama or as a symphonic backing.
The last available Jam Pack is the Voices one. This is a weird one because you can't really make a complete vocal line from samples. Mostly because you can't tell a sample what to sing. Also the Voices software instruments are mostly oohhs and ahhs choirs which never sound "real" there is one that you can go through vowels with the mod wheel but again who just talks or sings in vowels? To its credit the samples that are sung by real singers sound incredible though some may find the production a bit OTT. They do work well for my chosen genre which tends to use just vocal snippets and i produced a song that is just lovely using a few lines from one of the "singers" But like all the Jam packs they are completely royalty free and legal to use in a song. They also sync perfectly with Logic and GBand.
There is one more Jam Pack which i don't have because it is no longer available, so I can't really comment on it.
i know this was long and i apologize. i probably should have said. " Don't worry about it just buy Logic 8 because you get the first five Jam Packs (not including voices but it does include the first and no longer available one) FOR FREE!" Even for the full version of Logic it's like buying the Jam Packs and getting Logic for free!
also about the original question about instrument plug-ins. Logic can only use Audio Unit (AU) Plug-ins VSTs will not work in (natively) Logic. For most plug ins you can usually download a "Demo" version to get an idea if it is right for you. There are freeware, shareware, and for pay AU's all over the web and there are multiple forums for discussing them. www.kvraudio.com is an excellent forum completely dedicated to digital audio production with an emphasis on Plug-Ins and many developers of plug-ins actually have their user forums there and communicate directly with users of their products.
I hope this clarifies things- gos

The too-full hard disk drive is an issue to contend with, a backup to external hard disk drive is recommended, then you can remove any user created (itunes, iphoto, movies) once reliable libraries are moved or copied to the external. There is a way to move libraries, etc correctly so they can be used by their associated applications.
That is not why I am writing now.
I'm curious about how your computer arrived at possibly having adware installed, and what kind it has in it, or at least in the Firefox browser (or other locations) since the Install Torch is a proof of some kind of adware... And you should look into
•The Safe Mac: Adware Removal Guide
    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/
From a web site suggesting another path to cure that, the following suggests anyone with the issue you describe to download & install some probably bogus removal tools to be rid of the stuff your computer is doing, but really the answer is in the Adware removal guide....
"Victims often notice Torch Browser or Torch add-ons and extensions such as Torch Music installed onto their computers without consent. if this is the case, it is likely that Torch Browser bundled with previous downloads including freeware, shareware, codecs, and torrents. Torch Browser primarily bundles with media related software including video converters and P2P clients, as well as third-party browser add-ons, extensions, plug-ins, and Toolbars."    -- this, from a possibly bogus site where one could get an Uninstaller; but their removal tool can be a source of bigger problems, since it Installs more stuff.
The adware known as Conduit has been said to probably be behind this but there may be others. There are a few things the Safe Mac pages can help you find out about the item affecting your browser. These adware malware items can affect other browsers, in the same way it may have affected your FireFox. This appears to have been going on for a time, and likely has evolved since it first appeared a year or two ago.
So, this is something to look into.
    Good luck & happy computing!
