Loading "iPhoto Videos" takes forever

When I started iMovie '11 for the first time, it spent 12 hours or so finding the videos in my iPhoto library and then generating the thumbnails. I have a hundred or so .AVIs in there shot with my Canon ELPH. When I quit iMovie or just navigate away from the event "iPhoto Videos" and then back, it again takes hours for the video thumbnails to display. Once they are displayed, I can zip through them (though there is no sound when I scrub through - not sure if this is a bug or not). But in any case, it takes a long time (hours) to load these up every time. Am I doing something wrong?

In general, it may take a long time to generate iPhoto movie thumbnails the first time you run it. Let it run overnight or when you will not be at the computer. After that, when it offers to create iPhoto thumbnails, it should take a couple of seconds as it checks for any recently added movies. It should spend no time creating thumbnails for movies it has already processed.
If iMovie is spending a lot of time generating thumbnails for iPhoto movies that have already been processed, you need to explore whether the thumbnails are getting stored properly after they are finished. Typically, this could be either a permissions problem (most likely) or a failing hard drive (more rare.) My first step would be to repair permissions using disk utility.

  • You tube and other videos take forever or keep starting and stoping

youtube and other online videos take forever to open or keep starting and stopping

First thing to check is your actual download speed. Services, especially cable internet providers, say their top speed is "up to" some value. Cable internet is a shared resource so, should someone on your node be hosting online games or hosting a file sharing site from their computer, they are robbing you of bandwidth.
    Try this speed tester:
    http://speedtest.net/
and compare the results to what your ISP says you can get at max. Also try the test at different times of the day.
If the test shows you are consistently getting only a fraction of what the top-rated speed should be, contact your provider. They can see if there is a problem in your area. Old cable, oxidized connectors, and neighbors hogging the resource are things they can address.

  • Quicktime videos take forever to load on my system

Is it me alone, or does anyone have the same problem? I have a excellent system, and nothing takes forever to load on it, only Quicktime videos. The only reason why I use quicktime on my XP machine is to watch the videos that are downloaded from my Kodak camera memory card since the camera saves its video files as quicktime videos, but it takes forever for the video files to load after I have downloaded them and saved them into a folder on my system. When I want to go back and view the videos, the folder freezes until all the videos, even if it is only one video in the folder loads. Why is that? Other video files load immediatley from avi, wmv,to divx, etc.
    Does anybody have a solution?

  • Facebook won't load properly. Takes forever and then I get a script page with log-in and then that takes forever and gives me further script that won't let me access anything. Other sites load and work OK!

Started after last auto update several days ago. A few other sites are slow to load while many are good but Facebook just won't present it's usual mix of pre-programmed scripts and links but comes up eventually as part HTML script with a log-in box and when you log-in it then takes forever again and just gives HTML type script for "Friends" "messages" etc. but if you click these it goes nowhere!
Also it won't let me clear history at all despite many tries. I removed and reloaded the program last night but no positive effect.

I still haven't resolved this problem. Here is some more information...
youtube is the only website that has started working, but it sometimes stops working again.
There are many other sites that don't work, cnn.com, washingtonpost.com (sometimes), and a lot of others.
I have contacted our internet service provider and they said that they had nothing to do with the problem.
Some websites will not work at all. Safari tells me that it can't find the server. Some that do this are ups.com, computerworld.com, and others.
I think that the problem is that, for some reason, our mac computers can't access certain servers where we are. (We are at a small ski resort (on the mountain) in Canada.) I think this because when a site doesn't load properly there are several errors and they are all "can't find host" errors from a couple of the same sites (ex. example.something.something).
*Also, I ran a test on speedtest.net on the laptop and one of our iMacs and the results were way faster than anything actually loads/downloads or than the activity monitor shows, even when checking the activity monitor at the same time as running the test.

Installed Linux Mint on my laptop. Came with Firefox. For a day or so it loaded pages quickly. Now it either takes forever or doesn't load them at all. I have a wireless connection with 5 bars (sitting within 3 feet of the N wireless router.) What's up? Tried running in safe mode. Made no difference. • Recently my movies and videos take forever to load and when they start playing it's for a second or two at a time. Have to hit the play icon over and over, did not use to be this way they work great on my desktop and iPod

Recently I have been experiencing my downloaded videos and online vids taking a long time to load and when they do, they will only play for a few seconds at best and you have to hit the play icon over and over. Never had this problem before with the 20 plus vids I have any suggestions would be appreciated

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • Videos take forever to load

Why does it take so long for videos to load on my macbook?  what can I do to speed the process up?

How large are the videos?  What protocol are you using?  USB 2 is the slowest.  Firewire is twice the speed of USB 2.  Do you have eSata capability?  Thunderbolt?
    Ciao.

  • Computer constantly crashes and now videos take forever to load and play.

When I watch videos, doesn't matter where they come from, my computer hangs like crazy and half the time, I just abandon the video.  My computer also crashes constantly, yet everything is updated and in working order.  I could be in the middle of reading an article of news and all of the sudden the whole system goes black and blank and then after about 30 seconds the whole computer goes off.  I have cleaned it out with canned air and everything recommended.  Can I go back to Windows 8 and abandon 8.1 altogether?  I need help with these matters and in layman's terms please.  Why does this keep happening?  What viable solutions are there for all these problems?  Nothing started happening until my computer automatically updated with 8.1 and its now been a year of nightmares endlessly.  PLEASE HELP.

I am no expert but I think there is an issue with Windows updates for 8.1 and HP desktops, my mouse was dragging, sound was staticy with humming and crackling and video would freeze intermittenly . What finally fixed my machine was a full recovery and blocking windows updates. Now my machine is perfect other than the fact that the beats sounds terrible. The beats work fine now they just sound terrible.

  • The lack of H264 is really getting irritating. AME is massively unreliable for me, and Premiere loading AE compositions takes forever.

So for whatever tech reasons Adobe decided to remove H264, despite it being an industry standard for Vimeo, Youtube, broadcast delivery companies like Extreme Reach, and local BluRay mastering companies like Replicopy.
I'm about two steps from dumping this entire program, because the unreliability of my job on Adobe's end is embarrassing for me. It takes me 3-4 times to render something out for a client to watch it/approve it. Why 3-4 times? Because AME likes to remove audio completely, insert bizarre solarized frame glitches, or just lock-up and say it'll take another 35+ hours to render a 90 minute video that once took 12 hours to render on CS6.
I'm not going to render out a DNxHD file for friends/clients to watch. Not practical when it's 18x the size of H264 Youtube compression. 109gb versus 6gb.
I'm losing my patience here, and I'm out of ideas. I have found no reliable way to render from After Effects anymore. The most reliable, but still a shot-in-the-dark, is when I load up from the render queue a DNxHD or GoPro Cineform file then transcode it afterward with AME, which is an idiotic and unnecessary workaround. I just transcoded a 109gb DNxHD file to an H264 file from AME with random glitches, again. Wasted another 90 minutes. I have no f'n idea what to do next, I'm out of ideas. Try GoPro again? Do another DNxHD and transcode to H264, and just cross my fingers that that 14 hours of rendering will work?
    In short, the issue:
Windows 7 machine, had been running CS6 with no problems.
Trying to render short sequences for client approval as well as 90 minute compositions from AE via AME (running into problems of audio being dropped, flipped/solarized frames, and the program just locking up).
What do you guys do? How would you guys export a 90min documentary for a BR master? They don't take GoPro or DNxHD. They take H264. Has anyone else run into the problems I've described here? Is there a patch/solution? Is there another intermediate codec that isn't insanely huge?

Hey thanks for the response. This was a documentary cut in FCP a long time ago by another editor, colored by someone else, then they asked me to do lower thirds/insert some stuff/etc. Did most of the work in CS6 last year in AE since it was just easy enough to put everything in one program on one timeline with only 1 generation loss. We did a master, rendered it out fine at H264 last year for a theater showing, had no problems. Upgraded to CC in October and it's been a nightmare to render this out. It takes longer (used to take 8 hours, now roughly 12-14 depending on what codec), and it'll either insert those glitches or just lock up. It'll lock up more frequently in AME and it'll more frequently insert glitches if I render from AE. It seriously takes 3-5 attempts over night to get a successful render, so every little change takes a week to fix.
I've never had a problem with long compositions in AE. I've colored feature length films in AE. I just grew up using AE for most everything (back when we were cutting on Speed Razor) and learned color with that, long before Speedgrade was a thing. Most of the work we do is graphics and composition heavy so my workflow usually goes Premiere -> AE, and that's it.
I didn't have any of the locking-up problems when I recently rendered out 10 broadcast commercials, but I did have quite a few "oh let's give you a file with no audio despite the audio having been selected" situations.
All of my CC products are up to date
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    Intel i7 [email protected] GHz
    GeForce GTX 260 driver 340.52
    Quicktime version 7.7.3 (1680.64)
    9 GB RAM
Source Footage: ProRes, 7D, HVX files
    AE version: 13.2.0.49
    AME version: 8.2.0.54
You know what though? I might've just thought of the solution. It might be overloading the ram and it needs to purge while rendering. In AE you can get that "secret" menu by holding shift and going into preferences, which allows you to purge the ram while rendering - but can I do that with AME as well??

  • Videos take forever to download onto itunes!

so, i download a 22 minute video on to my itunes that i bought and it take 2.5 hours to actually get onto my itunes! is there any way to speed up the process or could something be makeing the download move slower?

This happens to me once in a while when I download video's to my Dell. Sometimes a TV show downloads in a minute or two. Sometimes it can take as much as forty minutes. For me it mostly tends to do this when I install a new version of iTunes (it happened when I installed the latest version of iTunes). However, it never took 2.5 hours.
Does it always happen whenever you download a video or just that one time??? It might have been just a one time thing.

  • HT1338 My macbook takes forever to load some pages. I have no idea why. Any suggestions please?

Im having problems loading some pages - takes forever and sometimes never load and freezes everything else up. Its as though Ive pick up a trojan or something (had problems in my pre Mac days). Any suggestions on what i can do or how to find out what the problem might be. Using this site wasnt a problem, pages loaded normally. Seems to be when im on comercial sites and searching for items.
    I use firefox.
    Thanks

Hi - sorry for late reply. I tried all you suggested and it made no difference to begin with, i couldnt even open this page to reply to you, which is why i havent replied before now. But the next day - all seemed significantly better. Maybe using Ghostery takes time to have an effect. Its something i didnt know about so i am extremely greatful for the advice.

  • I was having problems with my Adobe Flash plugin crashing occasionally during my game playing on Facebook. After researching it on the Firefox Help site, I upgraded. It now takes forever to load, if at all, and loses the connection. What gives?

The game eventually loads but now takes forever. If I switch to a different section of the game, it also is slow. It wasn't before I upgraded to the "new, improved" version. I was better off with the old Adobe plugin and putting up with the occasional crashing.
