Hi all,
since 2-3 weeks I've had some FAIL during the boot (after having upgraded the system, I remember that there was involved an upgrade of init script probably, or something connected with the booting process).

  • Mounting local filesystem - FAIL (yet the fs still mounts...) [SOLVED]

    After modifying my time/date setup (setting the hardware clock to UTC, and using a custom timezone file) I started to get a [FAIL] message during boot (after the system had resynched to drive times to the system time), and shutdown.

    Nothing seems to be negatively affected, and the boot and shutdown processes continue without even pausing, and sda4 (my /home directory) certainly seems to by mounted (since I'm using it now).
    I've run fsck at boot a couple times, but the drives keep coming back clean. I've tried using my old timezone setup, but the fail message persists. I've successfully unmounted and mounted sda4 as Root, trying to generate an error message of some kind, but all I get is a successfully unmounted, or mounted, drive. I've unmounted sda4 priod to shutdown as well, but the message persists.
    The only place in the logs the [FAIL] message shows up is in /var/log/boot:
    Mounting local filesystem   [BUSY]  [FAIL]
    I'm at a loss. I would like to fix this, if only to be sure that it's not a symptom of a larger problem. At the very least, I'd like to know what is causing it.

    You interpret correctly, Logicien. BIOS is set to UTC; HARDWARECLOCK="UTC". Time and date are a-ok.
    I ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26, but the message persists. I also tried using the live cd, and mounting each of the drives in turn. All of them mounted successfully, with no error messages. To verify that it is sda4, I commented the sda4 line out in fstab, and rebooted the machine. I got:
    Mounting Local Filesystems [FAIL]
    but none of the Ext3-fs stuff, and the boot process continued successfully. I'm wondering if it's something else.
    I'll try adding quiet to the kernel boot line later this evening and see what that brings about.

  • Setting locale before mounting local filesystems

    I have this problem when mounting an NTFS partition:

    I have figured out that the problem is that the locale is set after mounting the partitions (it is the last reason listed on the support question above).  Is there a way I can have the locale be set before mounting those partitions?  I figured it may be in /etc/rc.sysinit but don't know much about that file, so don't want to mess it up (as I have before).
    I know there is an option to set "locale=" in /etc/fstab, but I think the above solution would be better since it would work across the board with all the generated locales.

    Yes, I had all the locales set, and that's not the problem.  The problem is that the filesystem is mounted prior to the locale being set during boot (as mentioned in the link I posted).
    I  have set the "locale=en_US.utf-8" setting in /etc/fstab and it works, so it isn't really a big problem.  But I originally thought that I would need to set it as de_DE.utf8 to be able to read umlauts and what not, but it works with the en_US locale set under fstab.
    I was trying to find a solution without having to set "locale=" in fstab, but since the English worked, I'm OK with that.

  • Eth0 is being up and down for several time during boot

    My wicd doesn't connect to eth0 on the first attempt after boot up. It is configured to eth0 always have a higher priority to connect.
    My dmesg shows that eth0 being up and down for several time during boot. I have e1000e in my MODULES list.

    If you have moved the Safari application from the Applications folder, move it back.
    As far as the cache goes, there's a work around for that when you can't empty the Safari cache from the menu bar.
    Go to    ~/Library/Caches/com.aple.Safari.Cache.db.  Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Try Safari.

  • Dhcpcd-based network fails during boot

    Hi,
    My fully updated Arch_X86-64/KDE is connected to the Internet router via (on-board wired) eth1, and is configured to get an auto IP address.
    This has worked flawlessly for years till two days ago.
    Ever since,  eth1 service fails during boot, and requires several manual dhcpcd command to finally kick in. The same applies after waking from sleep mode. (see terminal output below)
    As can be seen the system is configured to load the (correct) r8169 mode.
    Please advise.

  • Kernel panic upon mounting local filesystems, yet Windows works fine

    I recently got a free MacBook from Apple to replace my dying iBook G4 of almost 3 years. It's been working great. Got everything running great, Boot Camp'd it, and have enjoyed using it with both OSes.
    Well, that is until a few days ago. My friend wanted to try out Parallels, so I let him boot up to it. It started acting slow (running off battery power, reduced CPU usage) so he forced a shutdown on it. Ever since then, OS X kernel panics on boot. Going into Safe Boot resulted in a kernel panic. Going into verbose mode reveals it panicking as it mounts the local filesystems (occasionally with a message about the Bluetooth idle timer stopping sandwiched between the mounting message and the panic message) Booted into single-user mode, ran a fsck, and it came up fine. Tried to boot from the bundled install DVD, but it only results in a kernel panic as well. Amazingly, through all of this, the Windows partition still works fine. I can also still use the Mac partition from Windows using MacDrive without a problem.
    So, has the ghost of Bill Gates tried to overtake my MacBook, or have the little gnomes in there decided to mess with me? I'm pretty reluctant to say that it's the HD being corrupt, because as I mentioned before, the drive still works fine. All the hardware works fine under Windows as well.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Oh, and a snippet from the panic screen: (Didn't take the whole thing down, and I don't have a log to copy the text out of, seeing as it can't mount the drive to write the log to it)

    Sounds pretty typical for this sort of problem.

    My workaround appears to have been successful.
    1. Start MacBook in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
    2. Make an image of the OS X partition on the host computer using Disk Utility.
    3. Erase and zero the OS X partition using Disk utility
    4. Restore the OS X Partition using Disk utility.
    I previously tried zapping PRAM and following the other Apple provided techniques for trying to get the system to boot, so thos changes might also have been important, though I doubt it.
    The key piece of information to determine whether this fix is for you is the kernel panic while attempting to mount you disk in single-suer mode. If the MacBook gives a kernel panic identical to the one listed by the OP. The steps above appear to be a valid fix for such a problem.

  • [SOLVED] "Filesystem check failed" during boot process

    I was using XFCE on my netbook recently and clicked "shutdown".  It logged out to the command prompt and nothing happened.  Assuming that I'd clicked "logout" by mistake, I typed "pacman -Syu" to run an update...  And moments later it suddenly started the shutdown process.
    Now, whenever I boot up, I see the message below.  I tried booting from a GParted CD to check the filesystems for errors, but none were detected.
    Can anyone suggest what I might need to do to fix the problem?

    As mentioned already, the reason it's failing is because the /dev/sdb2 partition is mounted before it can be fsck'd. What is this partition exactly (which filesystem, what's on it, mountpoint,...)?
    I'm not overly familiar with the Linux boot process, but why would it suddenly be mounting this partition before fsck-ing it?  Even if it was mounted when the netbook shutdown, surely the boot process starts with all partitions unmounted...?  Anyway, the partition details from /etc/fstab are below.

    I tried "umount -l /dev/sdb2" to unmount when the device becomes free... but it never does.
    I also booted into GParted, but there is no option to "unmount" /dev/sdb2.  There is a "mount" option in the menu, but it is greyed out.  If I open a terminal window from the GParted Live environment and type "sudo umount /dev/sdb2" I get the following message:

  • Problem With Auto Loading Modules And Nvidia

    Well I have old Nvidia card that seems to be giving me problems. The card is
    01:07.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)
    The problem is that if I allow modules to be autoloaded my system will crash at boot. And it differs from crashes that i am used to seeing. Rather than going thru the whole boot and ending up at the login screen, I get a bunch of junk of the screen saying kernel panic. But unlike regular kernel panic errors it spits out a lot of lines and is stuck there.
    Over six distros have failed to fully boot. Even the mighty knoppix couldnt get all the way thru. Debian and gentoo worked but for various reasons I dont want them for my system. Arch is my distro of choice. Why they work i dont know ? Maybe debian works due to they use old software. Gentoo well i have no clue, i used the installer to install cause i was lazy, but it installed w/ no problems??? Arch installed perfect as usually but upon boot fails.
    Can anyone explain what i must do to get modules to autoload?

    Luckly i didnt have to go thru all of themsince it was intel-agp that was causing all the pain. So now i have a better vid card than intergrated and Arch Linux!!!!

  • Fail during boot up?

    Once in a while, my MacAir's screen does not come up right during booting up and had to restart.

    Try the following:
    Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Using wpa_supplicant and iwconfig to setup wifi during boot.

    I have my gnome desktop running.  My wireless network at my house is hidden and secured via wpa passkey.
    Eitherway, I have two commands that need to be run during boot...
    iwconfig eth1 essid xxxxx
    wpa_supplicant -Dwext -ieth1 -c/etc/wpa_details.conf
    Where would be the best place to stick that?
    On the other hand!!!
    If there is a better way to do it, please by all means suggest it!

  • Kernels 3.10.6 and 3.10.7 fail to boot with EFI stub

    Been using rEFInd for some time now. Current installed version is 0.7.1. Kernels 3.10.5 and earlier would boot without incident. Yesterday I upgraded to 3.10.6 and boot failed. As a workaround, I copied the Liquorix kernel and initramfs from my Kubuntu partition; to my mild surprise, this worked. My next test was to install the 3.10.7 Zen kernel from heftig's repository. This kernel boots fine (I added a version number string to the name of the kernel image and the initramfs so that rEFInd would automatically match them). After that, I enabled Arch testing and updated the Arch kernel to 3.10.7; this also fails to boot just like the 3.10.6 kernel did.
    I'm a fan of boot text, so I've configured rEFInd in text mode only. Here's my refind.conf, with almost no changes from defaults:
    timeout 20
    textonly 1
    use_graphics_for
    scan_all_linux_kernels
    And my /boot/refind_linux.conf:

    Steve, your picture is far too large for these forums.  You are going to want to put it in some kind of a picture sharing/hosting site and link back to it.  Otherwise it will end up disappeared (likely via black magic) from your post.  I don't think that it provides any useful information anyway.  If you want to post your kernel command line that is great.  But posting a picture of a frozen screen with no output... doesn't really do much good.
    Efistub has been a bit shaky since 3.6 actually.  There is a monster thread about this already, the title of which references 3.6, but the content continues on through several kernel releases.  Still people continually report this as being an issue.  What I do is I keep a normal efi bootloader (one that doesn't rely on efistub) at the ready all the time.  My choice was elilo, but since [testing] started including syslinux-efi in the syslinxu package, I have started using that... though I still have elilo set up.
    Can you boot with efistub from the UEFI Shell or gummiboot?  I prefer gummiboot, but I have had this problem in the past, and when I did, I was able to boot with rEFInd... which was strange.  Some people even report that simply having a direct efibootmgr entry in their firmware causes it to magically work.  Though there should be to reasonable explanation for this, it was confirmed by several people in the mentioned thread.

  • P6N SLI PLATINUM and E8500 (revision E0) fails to boot

    Recently, I purchased an E8500 (revision E0 - SLB9K) processor and I installed it on my motherboard. My P6N Platinum already had bios 1.7 installed. Before that, I had an E2140 installed and it worked flawlessly. I even had it OCed to 2.3 GHz, from 1.6 original. I looked on the list of CPUs supported by this MB and is shows that E8500 revision E0 is supported, beginning with bios 1.7, which the MB already has. The problem with this E8500 is that the MB fails to boot. Does not do anything ! It's frustrating ! I even connected the 8-pin CPU connector to the MB (it had the regular 4-pin CPU connector before) thinking that the E8500 needs more juice, but nothing happened.
    Last night I installed the old CPU (E2140) back on the MB, and it runs OK. Please give me an advice. Is any bios available, that had not been published yet ? Should I take the CPU back to store ? Should I buy another MB ?

  • Running applications and mounting network shares are system boot...

    I have found plenty of User boot tricks for OSX. I am looking for the correct and best way to do 2 things.
    1. I want to run Aptana (a OSX application) which is the bootstrap for the service. Right now I have to manually start the service after rebooting. Where would one start.
    2. I want my server to mount a smb share on startup, I do NOT need boot time access.
    Any help and/or links would be awesome. Google is failing me.

    An applescript application set as a user login item should be a better choice.
    I'm just about to work this out for an SMB mount of a users Windows home (augmented AFP homes are breaking preventing the 'Mount UNC path' option in the AD plugin).

  • Is it possible to use Boot Camp to partition an external hard drive so there is a OSX partition and a Windows partiton?  I want to use the external drive for backup only, NOT to load Windows and NOT to use as a boot drive.

    I have partitioned the internal hard drive and am running Lion and Win7 Pro on my iMac i5 2.7GHz with 16GB RAM.  Can I use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition on an OSX external hard drive to use for backing up both systems to the same HDD?  I do NOT want to install OSX Lion or Windows 7 Professional on the external drive.  I do NOT want to boot either system from the external drive.  The 3TB external drive is for backup only.

    Use NTFS for Windows and buy Paragon NTFS for OS X
    You can also try Paragon HFS for Windows
    As long as you are using for data and backups, you can leave the drive as GPT too.
    I would recommend strongly to always have a 2nd bootable Mac OS drive, only need 30GB partition. System maintenance. Though LIon Recovery Mode finally makes it less but not totally unneeded.
    And yes you can use Windows to create a partition.
    Boot Camp is too broad. Do you want or mean BC Assistant? not needed but probably possible.
    MBR has trouble with 3TB drives.
