Loading videos freezes my mac screen!

Video loading causes my mac screen to freeze forcing me to restart the mac! any ideas would be aprecited

It's time to get back to basics since we know very little about your system and how you are trying to view the videos.
What model iMac do you have?
What version of the OS is installed?
What application(s) are you using to view the videos?
Have you tried creating a new user account to see if the issue goes away?
Is there another application you can try to vide the same video? (eg use Firefox instead of Safari)
Have you run the built in Apple Hardware Test diagnostic to see if it generates any errors?
Have you tried booting in safe mode?  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

  • Recording videos from my Mac Screen

    I would like to record in a video file (mov for example) my Mac screen showing Google Earth overflying a region in the world and incorporate this video in a montage of my vacation trip.
    There are an awful lot of various software or sharewhare offering this feature but am not too sure which one is the best for this specific usage.
    Can someone advise?

    Well, I found another solution much less expensive: Snapz Pro X which is very flexible in choosing the video format, the codec used for exporting the clip, the area of the screen to capture (choosing to keep the 16 by 9 ratio), and exporting in XDCAM EX 1080p30. This is great for only less than $70

  • Video freezing in full screen mode

    When I'm watching a video in full screen mode, the video will sometimes freeze for a few seconds or until I move my mouse.  The audio keeps playing but the picture will keep freezing.  Last time this happened it went away with the latest Chrome update.  But not this time.  This is very fustrating....please help!!

    Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
    I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
    You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
    If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
    The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • How can I get my Mac to load past the start-up screen?

    My MacBook Pro (17" Mid-2009 model) that originally came with Snow Leopoard was acting up recently. Currently, it was running OS X Yosemite. I had been using the computer and then left it in sleep mode for two days while I was away. When I came back, the computer was turned off. At first, I thought it had simply run out of battery power but a quick press of the battery-level button on the side showed it had around 80% of battery left. I did not turn it off before I left, so I assumed another person had turned it off for me.
    I proceeded to turn on the computer, but it started to make a faint, but abnormal noise. It was not coming from the disk drive, more on the lower left corner of the computer. It was repeating every few seconds. It then completed start up and I was presented with the log-in screen. The normal icons for each profile showed, but the icons for the menu bar at the top and the "sleep", "restart", and "shut down" along with other normal computer icons were completely weird. The closest I could describe them as was a more pixelated version of the infamous "missingno" from early Pokemon games: garbled pictures of once-normal icons.
    The the comouter was acting much slower than usual, but I was able to click on my profile to enter my password. The animations were sluggish and distorted. It didnt even show that I had entered any characters, but I knew it was attempting to log in because the placement of icons were arranged to where they would be in a login. After a few minutes, I tried to shut the computer down by pressing the on-screen power button, but to no success. I forced the comouter off by holding the power button on my Mac, where is sputtered down with a flash of the screen.
    I waited a few minutes, and completed a NVRAM restart. The sound came on along with the screen, but the loading bar would get to only 1/3 of the way before sitting for 3 minutes then dissapearing as the computer shut off. I attempted to restart several times, all met with the same failure. At this point, I had tried a few things suggested on websites such as entering single-user mode and entering "fsck -fy". I was unable to enter safe mode or disk utility.
    Then like magic the computer actually completed start up and I was able to log in. Unfortuantely, I was only on for about 10 minutes before the comouter shut down yet again. Through the next few hours, I was desperately trying to restart the computer, only being able to enter disk utility once. The disk utility said there was nothing wrong with "Macintosh HD" when I "Verify Disk"-ed  but that something else was wrong when I clicked on "Repair Disk". (I don't even know if this is even the right kind of thing to do in this type of problem, but I tried it anyway.)
    So, I have tried different things like removing my external mouse and re-installing OS X (Which I could not do because it only gave me the option of selecting "Recovery Drive" because the normal "Macintosh HD" did not appear). But nothing has worked so far. From what I have seen, this also doesn't look like an issue with a graphics or video card because the screen is no longer glitchy (I read a discussion about failing NVidia cards causing a lawsuit and free replacements but they were a few years before my Mac was purchased) but I do not know what a problem with a logic board would look like, nor a failing hard drive. From what this looks like, I think I am going to have to fork over hundreds of dollars at the Apple Store just to fix something that is wrong. Hopefully, I won't lose any data.
    Here is more information about my computer:

    Slow, intermittent.  Sometimes bootable sometime not. Odd behavior.
    Sounds to me like a classic case of your HD failing.
    Your SMART status may still show verified, with no errors on the Apple Hardware Test, Disk Utility shows no problems on Disk Repair-  this is of no help.
    I trust you have a good back-up and a bootable clone.

    I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
    However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
    yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
    This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
    Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
    If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
    Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • Video loading into iphoto as black screen

    I have loaded videos from two different cameras. One is fine. The other loaded the videos as black screens. I have downloaded a divx converter per the owner of the camera but it still doesn't work.
    When I go to Macintosh HD from my desktop and go to all movies. These movies are there and have a thumbnail that shows a picture. But when I click to play the movie it shows the black screen.
    Please help, thanks.

    This probably means that the Mac doesn’t have a codec appropriate for the video format. Try install Perian

  • Hi all, I'm trying to connect my macbook pro to Sony Bravia tv using Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable with Audio Support , when connected to the HDMI on tv I get a picture of the mac screen saver ( the starburst ) no video/audio,thanks, Derek

    Hi all, I'm trying to connect my macbook pro to Sony Bravia tv using Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable with Audio Support , when connected to the HDMI on tv I get a picture of the mac screen saver ( the starburst ) no video/audio,any ideas? thanks, Derek

    Dave I'm glad to say that it works perfectly but I'm embarrassed to say that my 12 year old nephew hooked it up in about 10 minutes.
    If you have the Kanex Mini DisplayPort cable it will work, what confused me was changing the display settings in System Preferences,
    and dragging the mac screen from the mac onto the tv. Sorry I cant be more helpful but you have the right cable now you need a 12 year old nephew.
    Good luck Derek

  • I have a new Macbook Pro.  When watching Youtube videos, it works perfectly until I attempt to watch the video in full screen.  When in full screen, the video freezes immediately and the audio continues.  When minimized it works fine as before. Help?

    I have a brand new Macbook model A1502.  I am taking online college classes that incorporate youtube tutorial videos.  I can watch the videos if I don't maximize the screen to full screen.  When in full screen, the video freezes immediately and the audio continues uninterrupted.  I can press escape and go back to the previous screen and the video continues to play with no problems.  Can anyone help me please?  This machine is literally just out of the box with maybe an hour of use.  Thanks in advance

    First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
    If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
    Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
    If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
    Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • VideoDisplay not loading new video on a Mac

    Hi Everyone,
    I am at the final stages of releasing a product to my client and if I dont get this problem fixed it may be detrimental to me getting paid, so much hair has been pulled out so far!!!
    I have a created a bbc iplayer type application that downloads videos, stores them for viewing offline and plays the selected one.   Before the selected video is played, a 10 second flv containing the clients logo plays.
    This works fine on a windows system but a Mac doenst like it.   The intro animation plays, but when it is finished it does not play the second video loaded into the videodisplay component.
    If this works on a windows system it means there is nothing wrong with my code - right?    The  both videos exist and the player plays both so therefore the code is ok.  Is there a known problem about how the videodisplay component renders video on the Mac?
    I thought one of the benefits of using something like Air was that you didnt have to worry about the operating system it resides on.
    Here is a simplified version of my code below if anyone can spot why this would be.
    //Called on creationComplete
    protected function onComplete(evt:FlexEvent):void { launchSplash() }
    protected function launchSplash():void
       //trace(">>VideoPlayerPanel:launchSplash--")
       _videoDisplay.source = "assets/Ident.flv";
       _videoDisplay.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE,onSplashComplete)
       disablePlayercontrols()
    protected function onSplashComplete(evt:VideoEvent):void
       trace(">>VideoPlayerPanel:onSplashComplete--")
       _videoDisplay.removeEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, onSplashComplete)
       _videoDisplay.stop();
       _videoDisplay.source = null;
       _videoDisplay.close()
       Alert.show("Starting 1.5 Second Timer","onSplashComplete")
       var _pauseTimer:Timer  = new Timer(1500,1)
        _pauseTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE, onTimerComplete)
        _pauseTimer.start()
       function onTimerComplete(event:TimerEvent):void
        trace(">>VideoPlayerPanel:onSplashComplete:onTimerComplete--")
        Alert.show("Timer Completed - Setting Video to play","onTimerComplete")
        _pauseTimer.removeEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE, onTimerComplete)
        _pauseTimer.reset()
        playSelectedVideo()
    protected function playSelectedVideo():void
       trace(">>VideoPlayerPanel:playSelectedVideo--")
       Alert.show("Video Should be playing","playSelectedVideo")
       _videoDisplay.source = _vidSource;
       _videoDisplay.play()
       enablePlayercontrols()
       if(_videoData.type.toString() == "audio"){showAudioImage()}
    If anyone can help me on this one I greatly appreciate it as I work on my own so have no one to look over my code...
    THANKS!

  • Full screen videos freeze - computer doesn't

    Hi everyone,
    Whenever I try to watch a video in full screen mode (YouTube but other streaming sites as well), the video freezes. The audio keeps going, I can click the buttons on the bottom bar of YouTube videos, for example, although they do not move as they normally do. I can exit full screen mode by pressing Escape or the button on the video and when I do, the video has moved on just like the audio has, and everything seems to work fine. It's the video in full screen that freezes, not the computer itself.
    I hope someone knows how I can solve this!
    Regards,
    JMS7.

    you can't buy a gpu as such, as this is soldered to the motherboard. You would need a motherboard change.
    But you can purchase a post warranty maintenance agreement (as said by mark_lenovo in the first post in that link), and then get the laptop fixed once the warranty is activated. This will be the cheapest way to fix this issue (if you want to still use your laptop that is).

  • I load cbc.ca and it loads ok then a grey screen covers the page and freezes everything - doesn't happen on other browsers

    I load cbc.ca - I assume other sites but haven't test - and it loads ok - then a grey screen covers everything and freezes the content- Other tabs work fine for other pages just not cbc.ca - what's wrong. This happens on all my copies of ffox. So not just a single computer.

    If you use extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

    How are you launching Mail? If you're double-clicking an icon on the Desktop (not in the Dock), delete it. If you're single-clicking an icon in the Dock, right-click or control-click and select Options > Show in Finder from the contextual menu. Open the Info window and check the version number.

  • Video freezes Mac to Windows

    Every time I make a video call to either my mom or my daughter my video freezes after about 20 - 60 seconds after which they can no longer see me. I can still see them and they can still hear me fine—just no video from me. Both my mom and daughter can use video chat with each other using their Windows clients with no issues. Now that my daughter is home from college I was able to test with her computer on the same network as my Mac. I disabled her Windows firewall and tested with the exact same results. This rules out her firewall blocking video from me.
    My Computer:
    OS X Yosemite
    Version 10.10.1
    Mac mini (Mid 2011)
    Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Skype Version 7.2 (412)
    External Web Cam
    iBuffalo BSW50KM01H
    This camera is specifically tailored and advertised to be compatible with Skype which is why I bought it. It works perfectly with Photo Booth and perfectly with FaceTime
    My Daughter’s Computer:
    HP Pavilion 15-b142dx
    Processor: AMD A6-4455M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 2.10 GHz
    Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
    Windows 8.1
    Skype Version 7.0.0.102
    This issue has been ongoing ever since I upgraded to OS X Mavericks and now with OS X Yosemite which is almost two years. The frequency of use is low enough that I’ve just been waiting for a fix (which I’ve come to realise won’t happen without my complaining and log files). This issue happens every time I try to video call to a Windows client. It never happens when I video call to another Apple device with Skype installed like iPhone. Let me be clear, this ONLY happens when I try to video chat, using Skype, to Windows clients…and it’s EVERY TIME.
