Loading windows in parallels and can't "agree" with F8 key

I've been trying to load windows in parallels and i get to the screen where you need to agree to the user agreement and i can't seem to get past this screen. You have to use the keyboard for commands, F8 =agree ESC=cancel etc. but my F8 key won't work. I have switched everything off in the preferences but it keeps doing the following: Pushing F8 enables/disables keyboard illumination; Fn+F8 (which is what some have suggested) brings focus to menu bar. I have switched the "focus on menu bar" command to something else, but the Fn +F8 still won't ditch that "focus on menu bar" command. so i end up having to cancel out of the install screen w/o loading windows, hence i have been unable to us parallels.
Anyone help?

finally found out the problem. wasn't mouse issues or num lock...my **** Yahoo widget engine was set for the F8 command. I think it is by default or something. anyway, turned it off and everything worked like a champ.
thanks for the help

  • Three Questions: Which Windows OS, Parallels, and HD Partitioning?

    Hi Everyone,
I have three questions about Boot Camp and Parallel that I hope someone can answer. I've been searching high and low on the internet, but can't seem to get a definitive answer.
I have a MacBook Pro. Specs: 2.16 GHz Core Duo (Tiger, v10.4.11), 2GB RAM, 100 GB HD (or more like 18 GB free now, running Final Cut Pro 5, Photoshop CS, Office for Mac 2004).
    1) I purchased the Leopard upgrade and want to install Windows. Should I choose Vista or XP? I know XP is more stable, takes up less resources, and has better program compatibility...but Vista is newer. To give you a sense of what I use Windows for right now...I mainly run AOL, Outlook, Office, Firefox, and Microsoft Flight Simulator (the only game I play).
    2) I also purchased Parallels v3.0. If I use Windows for Parallels and Boot Camp, do I need two installations of the windows OS? Does Parallels know that there's a Windows partition already?
    3) How much room should I give for the Windows partition? I've been reading 5GB for XP and 15 for Vista, just for the OS itself. Also, what file structure should I choose? NTFS or FAT?
I should also add that I want to do a clean install of everything to start fresh again. All of my files are backed up already onto an external hard drive.
Thanks for your help in advance!
    -Bob

    hi Bob,
ok, so Vista is newer & prettier - so what? will it give you anything you don't already have? probably not. having been drawn in by the shiny-newness of Vista, and progressively disappointed by is demons, i'd seriously reconsider my choice if i had to do it all again right now. maybe in 6-12 months time the "issues" will have been worked out...
the latest versions of both Parallels & VMWare recognise & use an existing BootCamp partition, so only 1 Windows partition/VM is required. so you'd first create your BootCamp partition via OSX, install Windows onto it, and then Parallels (or at least VMware, from recent personal experience) will see it as a valid virtual partition.
your figures for Windows' own HDD usage are fair (+ apps & data).
just be warned that an out-of-the-box install of XP will consume ~200MB ram, & Vista is more than 3 times that. with XP i have the tools & know-how to pare it down to <80MB, but I'm still battling to get Vista's ram footprint smaller than ~400MB. this comes right off the top of your free ram while under OSX/Parallels...

Just bought WPS Reader + and I've only gotten a "loading" window for last hour. Can anyone help or explain?

    First off, KONGRACHULATIONS!!!
Next, if you can't even drive to the library, David Pogue's excellent Missing Manual books are also available for either online (Safari service, unrelated to Apple's browser) or computer (PDF) viewing. Just be sure to get the right ones for your Mac's operating system (10.5 = Leopard, 10.6 = Snow Leopard, 10.7 = Lion, exact info available in the About this Mac item on the Apple menu).

  • Not Again! Window Ultimate Parallels and Bootcamp

I have read hundreds of threads and I don’t want this to be another but I have question that were not specifically answered on not answered at all. I am a life long Windows user and finally made the jump a few months ago. I am a photographer and I have many thousands of dollars in (Windows) software. I considered repurchasing some of them, just keeping an old PC, buying new MAC license for the software that offered it but I have decided to run a dual OS MAC.
    Specs:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.47f2
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.1 (10B504)
The big question, Bootcamp or Parallels?
I will use Windows (Vista Ultimate 32bit) for Adobe Master Collection (mainly PS, DW and Flash). I have a few other pieces like Light Room, Aperture and one or two PC only apps. My main uses are minor/moderate .jpg photo retouches/edits in Photoshop and maintain my websites with Dreamweaver.
    Questions:
    1. With my needs, does it sound like BC or Parallels might be a good fit? (File sharing in mind)
    2. What will I see when I fire up the MAC? Will Windows and MAC OS boot at the same time? Is there a choice of what to boot?
    3. File Sharing; Can I take an image that I have brought in via iPhoto, edit it in Photoshop and send it back to the iPhoto library?
    4. I understand that PS and DW are CPU hogs and not really memory. Is this true and should I take my 2gb of memory up to 4gb?
5..I have seen several comments about a Bootcamp portioned drive being better but no one has explained what that is. Can some one elaborate what that is and is that something done via the Parallels app and if not what is the difference between the Bootcamp partition and what Parallels does?
6.I will keep my online activities on the MAC side except for my ftp transfers for my sites. With this limitation and limited exposure do you think I need to install a virus protection on the windows side? Does loading Windows increase my exposure to viruses?
7.With Parallels, Can I shut down the Windows portion and have it apply all the resources back to the MAC os?
8.I have purchased but not opened Parallels 4.0. I see that 5.0 is out at the same price. Should I go with the new or stick with 4.0 which has been out for a while?
9.For those that say no to Parallels, should I just work with Bootcamp and a jump drive to move files back and forth?
10.Finally, with the specs below, how much space should I partition to carry the load?
    *Specs for Parallel:*
Memory Requirements 1 GB of RAM (2 GB recommended to run Windows Vista). Support for any memory configuration (up to 16 GB), without modifying your host system.
    Disk Space
Software Installation — 450 MB of available hard drive space for Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac installation (plus space to allocate to your virtual machine).
*Windows Ultimate Specs:* Not sure exactly how much space it eats up.
Min Processor Type: Intel x86 - 1 GHz
    Min RAM Size: 1 GB
Min Hard Drive Space: 40 GB
    *Adobe Master Collection Specs:*
2GB of RAM (more RAM recommended when running multiple components)
24.3GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on flash-based storage devices)

    Questions:
    1. Boot Camp. Graphic/processor intensive apps should generally not be run in a virtual environment
    2. It will startup in whatever OS you have chosen the computer to boot from
    3. Yes
    4. Yes..upgrade to 4GB
    5. Running Windows through Boot Camp is no different than running it on any other PC...that's why it's better.
    6. Of course. Windows is Windows no matter how or what it's installed on. It's still vulnerable to the same viruses.
    7. Yes
    8. See if you're entitled to free upgrade to Parallels 5
    9. That's your call. Nobody can make that decision for you.
    10. Depends on how big the hard drive is.

  • Is it possible to load Windows AP on an Apple Mac Pro with Retina Display?

I have read that Windows 7 loads fine but I want and need Windows XP on my mac pro.

You can't direct install XP, only Windows 7 in Apple's BootCamp now, it's because of hardware driver support Appel has to provide to Windows.
However you can run any Windows or Linux version in a virtual machine program in a windows in OS X
There is a performance and Direct X penalty, but it works very well and fast on the latest machines.
If you 3D game, the Windows game has to use OpenGL drivers, so it will perform fast in the virtual machine program.
