Local Adjustment Tool - need a Blacks slider

Is it possible to put a blacks slider in the local adjustment tool? Does anyone else wish this would happen?

+1... I would love to see this feature!

  • Making later changes to Local Adjustment Tool

While the local adjustment tool is great  - is there a way of "unpainting" parts of the adjustment, allowing you to refine areas/edges etc, rather than having to delete whole mask ?
ie like switching from a black to a white brush when using Photoshop masks ?
Also with gradient masks eg when object portudes into an adjusted sky area

Pretty basic...hold down the Option (or Alt for Win) key while painting to erase. Note the erase key can have different size and hardness settings than the paint in brush. This is use for painting with a bigger broad brush and using a smaller harder brush to erase the mask.

What screen resolution are you working with?

  • Local Adjustment Tool

A very very nice addition. That said, can someone kindly point me in the right direction as to where I can find more detailed info regarding let's say the Graduated filter tool. How for instance from the picker would I go about finding the equivalent of a 1 stop ND Grad filter and a 2 stop filter etc. The picker seems to have just about ever colour of the rainbow except a neutral grey but of course I guess that's just me. :-)

Ah, so the $ is an S? It's so small I wasn't sure what it was. So now that's it's an 'S' for Saturation that makes more sense. Would I be right in thinking then that the H stands for Hue although what the ° symbol has to do with it is anyones guess? Thanks for your perseverance but like I said earlier, this doesn't appear to be in print anywhere that I've looked.

  • Local white balance adjustment tool

I really like the new local white balance adjustment tool. If I could change something will be to give a real color temperature to the tool instead of a number from -100 to 100. Let me give you an example of how I used it today.
I forgot to bring some gels for my flashes for a photo shoot. I was using the flashes to illuminate the foreground and I had fluorescent lightening on the background. It was the perfect opportunity to try the new tool. I knew exactly what the color temperature for both front and back were. I applied the background color temperature of 3200k to the picture and when to locally change the foreground. At this point I was guessing what it should be at. My monitor is color calibrated but I was under fluorescent lights with my laptop. Instead I could have added +2200k or dialed 5500k to the local adjustment tool.
Please let me know if you need more information.

I'm sorry I found another discussion about this topic already. Shame on me I didn't do a more thorough search on it before.

  • Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file

Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file
I shoot everything on location and make minor edits while on location. My location edits usually transfer with the XMP file. I used the new local adjustment tool while on location, however when I got back to my main workstation and transferred the images the local adjustments were not there. Can this be fixed somehow, as it would be nice to only make those edits only once? I do not use as a catalog program, once the job is complete it is removed from the lightroom catalog so again those local adjustments are gone.
    Thanks
    Mark

The problem may be and I am only guessing here that because no other program
currently supports the adjustment brush options that that information is not
added to XMP file. Not even Photoshop or ACR supports that as of yet. Though
I honestly would have expected that information to be there anyways it would
just be ignored by programs that don't know what to do with (basically
    everything but LR 2.0).
Have you tried using DNG files. From what I understand an XMP file it not
needed as the information that is normally in a XMP file in kept inside of
the DNG file. This maybe another reason to go with the DNG format.
    Good luck.

  • Photoshop CS6: ACR Local Adjustment Slider Settings Retained Even When Cancelling Out of ACR

I've come across something in Photoshop CS6's ACR 7.2, which I don't think for a moment is a bug, but just what I would consider a slightly strange way of how Photoshop CS6 behaves:
When working on an image in ACR, if you select one of the local adjustment tabs, such as Graduated Filter, and move any of the sliders on the right-hand side, any values you change will be retained if pressing 'Cancel', then opening the image again in ACR and selecting the same tab. I find this surprising, as I would have thought that by pressing 'Cancel', any adjusted settings, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, would not be retained.
Furthermore, if you open another image in ACR and select the same local adjustment tab, the same settings that you adjusted in the other image have identical slider settings in that image as well.
I can see that this behaviour could be viewed as useful, i.e. when wanting to use the same local adjustment on multiple images, as any adjustment of the local adjustment's slider settings, on their own, will have no effect unless you actually perform the selected local adjustment to the image. But, as I say, I would have expected Photoshop to simply not retain any settings you have adjusted, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, if you don't press 'Open Image' or 'Done', and simply press 'Cancel'.
Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Clearly since those settings are not actually going into the image, but are just preparation for the next pin to be dropped by the local adjustment brush (or are further adjustments done on the last pin selected), Adobe didn't see fit to revert them on Cancel.
That said, I have to agree; if I were to botch up a bunch of settings I had before and wanted to revert them all, the first thing that would come to my mind is to hit the [Cancel] button.
I wonder if the disparity between the ways Apple and PC software typically interacts with the user could be at the heart of this...  On PC, adjustments in a dialog are generally "staged" until an [OK] button is hit, so of course [Cancel] throws them away - while on Apple adjustments are often (by convention?) stored permanently as soon as the control is released.

  • ACR Blacks slider problem?

    Hi
When i use the "Blacks" slider in ACR the darkest parts of the image "block up" and look very noisy. Unlike setting the black point or creating shadow clipping with the levels tool in PS, which gives a smooth effect, the black slider in camera raw seems to make the shadows crunchy and often with red pixels around the black ones.
I use both PS5 and PS6 and on both programs i have the same "problem". I also have used ACR 6.2, 6.7, 7.0 and 7.2. All with the same effect.
Up to ACR 7.0 the blacks slider had a range of 0-100 with the default being 5, and from 7.0 onward the slider can be set to either a plus or minus figure. In either version the default value often makes my shadows look pretty awful on screen. My question is - is this normal? In every book i read it says the blacks slider can be used ruthlessly to sett he black point but if i do that it creates a pretty blocked up result compared to the Levels black slider in PS.
I shoot with a Canon EOS 5d mk2 and the RAW files appear to have quite noisy shadows when compared to the out of camera Jpegs which have silky smooth ones. Not sure if that is part of the problem?

You have several issues swirling around...first off, the old Blacks slider in Process Version 2003/2010 is completely different than Process Version 2012. Yes, any Blacks moves in the earlier process versions tended to really clamp the Blacks...that is now considerably different in the new PV 2012.
So, which do you want to learn how to use?
The Blacks slider of PV 2012 is prolly the last slider you want to use in the tone controls in the Basic panel. If you use it too early, you are not taking an optimal approach to tone mapping. There are plenty of tutorial (Adobe TV) to learn how to use the PV 2012 adjustments...if you learn how to use PV 2012, I suspect your clamped Blacks issue will go away.
As far as the noise in the shadows, the camera JPGs get a dose of noise reduction in-camera. In ACR/LR, luminance noise reduction is set to zero (no luminance noise reduction at all). This would explain why your JPGs seem smoother than the default rendering in ACR/LR. I suggest learning how to adjust the luminance noise reduction in ACR/LR to optimize the noise in your raw captures. Some decent tutorials out there for that too...

  • Unable to Create local Adjustment in RAW

I was editing my images on RAW when all of a sudden I guess I pressed an incorrect key (yeah you know those split seconds where something happened and you dont know what you did) and now everytime I want to use the Graduated Filter tool or the Adjustment Brush tool and I press on top of the image it gives me the following message:
    ERROR:
Unable to Create Local Adjustment. All the local adjustment controls are set to have
    no effect on this image
It doesnt work on ANY raw images now, I tried pressing "Reset Camera Raw Defaults" and it still doesnt work.
Is there a setting that I moved without noticing??
At the time this happened I had 6 pictures on camera Raw I had synchronized them and I was doing small adjustments to one of the images, I had finished using the Graduated Filter tool on an image when then all of a sudden it stopped working
Thank you for your help!! I need to finish this project today and now I am going to have to sit and wait to resolve. Thanks again

I'm having the same 'Unable to create local adjustment …' problem too. But I don't understand the answer, specifically what 'values' should be modified, where do I find them to modify, and what kind of modification. Apologies for my ignorance, but I can't find anything despite searching the forums as well as I can.
Values on the sliders in the box on the right of the picture.
And next time try F1 before you waste time using the clunky forum search.

  • Blacks Slider

Just spent a couple of hours investigating the new develop module in a bit more detail. I've been trying to simulate my LR3 presets (both colour and black and white) using the LR4b 2012 process. Here are some thoughts:
    1. The new process certainly has it's strengths.
    2. It's a much bigger change, both in terms of how you apply adjustments and the underlying code than the 2003 to 2010 change. I could update most 2003 edits to 2010 with only barely visible perceptual differences. Not so with 2010-2012.
    3. There seems to be much more localised adjustment going on in LR4b. It's hard to quantify, and I certainly see the power of it, but it's possible to end up with an image that looks 'over-processed' much more easily then in LR3. Specifically:
    - Adjustments rarely seem to apply in a linear fashion. Obviously the sliders target different points of the histogram/image, but the response seems not to be linear.
    - While the highlight tool in LR3 used to pull back the highlights, used in larger amounts it could be used to flatten the lighting image overall. I have yet to find an analogue for this in LR4b. Reducing the contrast slider has a different effect as does clarity. The closest thing is reducing the whites but the effect is somewhat different.
    4. In b&w editing the blacks slider has an excessively limited range. I am bottoming out while trying to add sufficient black levels to well exposed images. This is a big problem for me as I like to produce deep rich b/w images. I never got NEAR the top of the blacks slider in LR3 but am bottoming the LR4b blacks out at -100 and wanting more from time to time.
    Thoughts welcome!

You don't have to update your existing photos - in fact, I'd suggest not doing so unless you want to reprocess.  Leave them on PV2010 and when you come to a photo that you want to use the new sliders on, then you reprocess.  It's a completely different process so there isn't a simple one-button-upgrade as there was for 2003-2010.
Yes, the new sliders are image-adaptive rather than linear.  Just be gentle with them.
For your B&W's, try the Tone Curve and see how that does for you.

  • No Local Adjustment folder in LR

I recently got LR4. I tried to put some brushes in the local adjustment folder and there is none! SO what do I do now. I've got pictures to edit and correct and I need these brushes...now.
Here is a screen shot of what is in my LR4 folder.   Thanks for any help.

I'm using Lighroom 5 and none of the above options worked for me, either. Below is what made the folder appear for my system:
What worked was I eventually Re-saved the presets  While on the Adjustment Brush tool, I chose the effect menu and chose "Save Current Settings as new preset" from the menu.

  • Wacom Tablet Pen Pressure stops working in Photoshop after using Lightroom Local Adjustment Brush

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a problem with my Intuos Pro Medium (driver 6.3.9w3 on Windows 8.1)
I am using Lighroom 5.6 and Photoshop CC 2014.
I an get the pen pressure to work in Photoshop without any problem. However, if I go into Lightroom and use the Local Adjustment Brush and then transfer the photo into Photoshop (Right Click Edit In => Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2014 CC) then the pen pressure stops working in Photoshop.
Really frustrating... The only workaround is to close both Photoshop and Lightroom, then reopen Photoshop, then usually the Pen pressure feature starts working again.
Has anyone experienced this before or has any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Guillaume

Your tablet driver isn't reporting pressure correctly.
The knockoff tablet drivers usually need to be revised for each new version of Photoshop (and we have no idea why).
Contact your tablet maker to see if they have updated drivers to fix their bugs.

  • Adjustment tools in Camera Raw not working

Downloaded CS 5 and opened Camera Raw, then attempted to use the adjustment tool and received the following message "Unable to create local adjustment.  All the local adjustment controls are set to have no effect on the image."  Can anyone provide assistance please and thanks?

I had the same problem and tried turning of GPU in Photoshop and in Lightroom which did not work, however in the RAW window when I found the preferences tab which is the tab with the 3 horizontal lines and unchecked GPU there Camera Raw did start working and the blue screen was replaced by my image.  Hope this clarifies it more and you get yours to wok also!

  • Able to make local adjustment on video ?

When I shot video about academic presentation, the PowerPoint graphic on projector screen was easily washed out while the speaker exposure was correct.
In Photoshop Elements, I can select and copy the screen area as layer, then adjust the brightness, contrast and level to make the graphic content readable.
Can I do the same thing on APE 12 ?  I tried to adjust the video footage but any adjustment applies to whole clips.  When the screen content is readable, the speakers is too dark.  Just wondering if I have the local adjustment options.
    Thanks.

From what you wrote, I am wondering if you have any version of Premiere Elements at this time. And, what computer operating system is involved?
There are effects in Premiere Elements that can be applied related to Auto Levels, Brightness, Contrast, Shadow/Highlight, Hue, and Saturation, Lighting. You can apply these effects to the whole clip or, for some, keyframe its property so that the effect varies across the duration of the video. But, for selectively correcting a specific area in a frame, you would need to do some exploration and experimentation with the what is. There is an Effects Mask to localize an effect, but how effectively you can deal with blending that into the rest of the frame is questionable and depends on what you are trying to correct. My blog post of Effects Mask is found
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/07/pe-about-effects-mask.html
and includes how I applied more than one Effect Mask to an image.
There is also a Track Matte Effect that may or may not be used for your purposes. The Feather Edge effect is not as effective as in Photoshop Elements Feather.
Where you might gain some advantage is the instance where you can create a freeze frame in the video and then apply selectively effects in Photoshop Elements before transferring the freeze frame back as an insert into Premiere Element Timeline content.
Basically you need to distinguish between those effects that can be varied across the duration of the video versus those effects which can be applied to a specific area of the frame. I believe the latter is what you seek.
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.
