Local disk usage vs Aperture

Hey all, just upgraded to a new MB air and the difference from my old 256 to 128 now is a bit tough.    I have a few VM's (Parallels) but having 2 kids, I did take a lot of pictures, now there getting older into sports, etc. I have a nice Canon DSLR and the pictures are so much better, but the problem as I first mention is disk space.  I have an external raid5 array with 2T and around 1.2T of both pictures and video.  I also have a pro Flickr account so I don't need the images local.  The problem I have is using aperture, it's nice that it keeps the thumnails local, but the truth is the originals are offsite and I don't use the app for viewing, so don't really need them there taking up space.
A friend suggested to switch to LR and there are some good threads comparing, but I haven't found the answer to that above question.  If I remove aperture, and simply take some pictures, load them up in LightRoom.  Edit, upload (I'm sure theres a flickr plugin), then move them to the NAS device, will I still have some big growing local file?
I don't mind making the switch as I am no aperture pro, but if I will have the same issues, it won't be worth it.
Thanks ...

Sorry was away, but that's a little off from what I am trying to ask.   I
would rather have nothing on my laptop saving the space.   Aperture keeps
the thumbs, in the local library, so even after I move the originals to the
NAS, I have a local storage that keeps growing.
As you said, I can keep the set on the NAS, but can I also keep the catalog
and previews on that as well?  I basically want to take some pictures, then
when I am home, open the app, import the files, edit them, push them to
flickr, then relocate them to the NAS, close the app and have no local
storage used.
Thanks

  • The new Yosemite Photos app local storage usage question

    Hi,
Did anyone check the local storage usage for the new Photos on Yosemite?
How much space does it take for all the lores photos locally if the originals are stored in iCloud.
Lets say if 100GB of RAW files are migrated from Aperture in to Photos to cloud. This should be 100GB in the cloud and how much on OS X?
Can a RAW file still be downloaded from cloud later or are they transformed to jpgs once uploaded?
What if there is not enough storage for all lores photos on iOS or OS X representing all the original iCloud photos?
    I'm really puzzled about this.
    Thanks

I just installed the Yosemite upgrade with Photos.  I don't use Aperture of the iCloud, but the iPhotos library migrated with about the same disk space, but it is doubled, because the old iPhoto library is still on disk.

  • 100% disk usage in Task Manager when using Photoshop CC (Windows 8.1 - 64 bit)

    Hi
I have been using Adobe CC for a month or two now. I own an Asus laptop with Intel i7 (2.4 GHz), 6 GB RAM, 1 TB hard disk space and 64 bit, nearly 6 months old. Following apps are currently installed: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Audition, Acrobat XI Pro, Premiere Pro and Media Encoder. I recently performed an update through Adobe CC for Photoshop and Illustrator, all others are up-to-date.
I believe, but I may be wrong, that since this update Photoshop is acting weird on my laptop. When I start Photoshop, my task manager immediately indicates a 100% rate of my disk usage. This seems to wield off after it is fully operational, but when I start to edit a file, the disk usage immediately jumps back to 100%, while the CPU remains below 10%, RAM stays at 3.5-3.8 GB (only 60% of total capacity) and even the actual read and write speeds of my HDD are not particularly high (5 - 10MB max). And because of the 100% disk usage, Photoshop freezes in an instant and operating it is nearly impossible.
I already uninstalled Photoshop, went over all services and **** that could trigger this within Windows 8.1 (Google-search for: Windows 8.1 disk usage 100%) , re-installed Photoshop and I still have the same problem.
So, I was wondering if there might be a solution to this problem or if anybody else is having this problem as well?
    Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: This error applies only when I try to manipulate, add, edit or remove text. All other functions (not related to text) seem to work properly.

No, I don't know much about that, but I found a couple links for you..

I've noticed that my computer NEVER goes above 50% disk usage. Almost as if its capped at 50%. And when it reaches 50% is when my

  • External edits and disk usage

Does external editings result to higher disk usage?
I've a master non-referenced image (6MB) stored in Aperture. Subsequently, I've modified it using an external editor. After each edition, the modification are stored as separate versions under Aperture.
Is it correct that each external edited version is stored in full size (6MB) each? For example, I've made 4 editions, therefore, I would have used 24MB (6MB x 4) of disk space.

When you export an image to an external editor, Aperture gives you a choice of whether to send it as a PSD or Tiff. Tghios choice is made in Preferences. It comes back as a stacked Version, but in reality is atleast the size of your Master. This is something that hopefully Aperture will change in 2.0. You should learn to take full advantage of the modifications you can make in Aperture. Obviously, there are some beyond its capabilities. Hopefully this too will be dealt with to some extent in 2.0.

  • Local disk space

I have over 2 gbs free on my iPad but I can't download an application which is 1.2 gbs. It keeps telling me that I need to sort out the usage of my local disk space + I only have 6,7 apps which is coming to 11 gb I don't understand why I can't download more of them as many people I know have over 20 apps. Please help

The application needs to room to expand when you download and install it. The iOS is telling you that you are cutting it too close.
If your iPad is a 16GB iPad, it only had about 14.5GB of usable storage out of the box. You can see the total capacity when you connect to iTunes and click on the Summary Tab. My iPad is the 64 GB model and I have 57.17 free space.

    REPLY ASAP (URGENT)

    Hi,
Disk Usage 100% does not mean disk full but there is task which is doing a lot of i/o during that time (probably swap/page file). If nothing using i/o, the number should be down to 0% as shown:
Now, I start a download, you can see both disk usage and Networks activities:
In your case, the utility may do a lot of i/o to the swap/page file. My suggestion: stop it or BUYING MORE RAM.
    Hope this helps.

i keep getting high memory usage and high disk usage in ps cs6.
its slow when i open a file. how can i solve this problem.
    thank you.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but more than what?  More RAM is almost always better, but you haven't answered most of the questions posed here.  The answer might be different if you have 2 GB of RAM or 32 GB of RAM already.  A 9 megapixel document could get rather large with a lot of layers, but again you've neglected to give any hard info about its size.
Regarding your video card, that's a bit of a judgment call you need to make.  For Photoshop CS6 I currently advise people to try to get a video card that gets a score of 1000 or better on this benchmark:  http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Video card speed will matter when you're editing those 3D components and video card VRAM will also matter, but possibly even more importantly your GeForce 320 is a bit old, and nVidia may just not be doing their best driver work for it any more.
Everything in general will run more smoothly with a powerful modern video card.  I like to recommend a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 7750 - or if the computer power supply and your budget allow, the even more powerful 7850.  VisionTek does a very good job with their hardware, IMO, and it comes with a lifetime guarantee.
Keep in mind that if you switch from nVidia to ATI or vice versa, you should carefully sweep your system to ensure all files from the old card are removed, then visit the web site of the new card's maker and download/install their latest display driver release.
    Best of luck.

The best audience for applets is people off the internet. 'People off the internet' might be using a computer that has no (what was it?) 'open.html' in the root of the C: drive. In fact (shock horror) they may not even be running Windows, and would therefore probably have no 'C:' drive at all.
If you do not intend to distribute this to people off the web, an application makes a lot more sense, but even then, you cannot rely on the document being there unless you 'put it there' (during installation, for instance).
As the other poster intimated, applets can load documents off the local disk as long as they are trusted. Here is an example*, but note that it is not so rash as to presume any particular path or file, and instead leaves it to the user to choose the document to display.
    * The short code can be seen at SDNShare on the [Defensive Loading of Trusted Applets|http://sdnshare.sun.com/view.jsp?id=2315] post.
On the other hand, a sandboxed applet can load any document coming from its own server via URL, or get showDocument(URL) to work. In that case, the JRE must recognize that the URL is from its own server, so the best way to form URLs for applet use is via the URL constructor
new URL(getDocumentBase(), "path/to/open.html");That is how I form the URL in this [ sandboxed example of formatting source|http://pscode.org/fmt/sbx.html?url=/jh%2FHelpSetter.java&col=2&fnt=2&tab=2&ln=0]. Of course, in this case the applet loads the document, then parses the text to draw the formatted version, but the point is that an URL produced this way will work with showDocument(URL).
I am pretty sure showDocument() in an applet off the internet will work with an URL pointing to a foreign (not its own) server, but it will not be able to load documents off the end user's local disks.
I suggest a couple of things.
    - Try to express this problem in terms of what feature it is that you want to offer the end user. Your question jumps directly to a bad strategy for achieving ..who knows what? An example of a feature is "Shows the applet 'help' files on pressing F1".
    - A good way to indicate interest in a solution is to offer [Duke stars|http://wikis.sun.com/display/SunForums/Duke+Stars+Program+Overview] to match that interest.
    Edit 1:
..and please figure out how to use the CODE tags.

  • File DownLoad from R/3 to Local Disk through Web Dynpro

    Hi,
I have a zebra print spool, to be saved in the local disk. For this, I have an RFC which will store the document in Portal Server KM folder and will give the file name for web dynpro app. The web dynpro app will search the KM Directory, and will enable the user to save the file on the local disk.
Is it right approach? Is there any other approaches which would be efficient. BTW, I have files from 4k to 12k size. Can I directly attach it to the context variable and store it directly onto the local disk.
I am running Netweaver2004 SP16. I cant use Input stream, does this affect the performance?.
    Thanks, I appreciate your time.

    Hi Raj,
you have the name and the full path of the file you can access the file through FILE IO as the file is on portal server only and then you can use the File Download UI in web dynpro to download the file
