Local Files on Mac

Hi. I'm on Yosemite. In Preferences / Local Files, I had iTunes switched on but Downloads and My Music switched off. Out of my 30,000 iTunes tracks, 22,000 were counted in "Local Files". I decided to switchon My Music and Downloads, based on what I learned from "Listen to Local Files" in the Spotify Help, and a few minutes later I was down to around 4,000 tracks (but with only 15 or so displayed). So I went back in and switched off My Music and Downloads, but left iTunes switched on. Now Local Files is completely empty, even after 15 minutes or so. What's up? Edit: A couple hours later, still no tracks in Local Files. Also, there is no such thing as "My Music" on the Mac. Specifically no folder includes those words. There is a Music folder however.

I solved it by turning off iTunes and "My Music" (the latter of which does not exist on the modern Mac) and using Add a Source to add the "iTunes Music" folder. Now it shows all 30,000 tracks. It looks like I have a CPU tax now...Spotify Helper runs at a constant 4%...I assume it's constantly checking for "iTunes Music" folder updates now. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions

on my Mac Book Pro OSX 10.6 both FF3. and FF6. does not open new tab for links on local files(file:///) but new window instead.
FF3 and FF6 does open new Tabs for external url (http://)
My FF preferences are set to 'new tab always".
    I tried some "browser.links." prperties in "about:config"
I tried also "Tabs Mix Pluos" extension.
    With no change.
    Note:
    * FF3.6 was doing the same thing on my (past) Mac G4
    * Safari, Chrome, Opera do the right thing (open new tab) on the same Mac and files.

  • Firefox on Mac will not open local files

On my Mac, since ver 3.6 I've noticed that when FF is not running, when I open/drag-and-drop a local file, FF opens to the homepage (which has been set to Google). When FF is running, the local files (HTML or even TXT) open fine. FF on my PC is fine. Is this the default behavior? How do I make FF start on the file I just tried to open?

Please restart the computer and try again.

I had a problem to test my movies locally in Flash Professional CS5, too. When I turned off the encryption on my Mac, the problem went away.

  • Getting "Unable to lock....icml file" error (Mac)

I'm trying to allow InCopy to work from a remote Mac to my system (MBP OSX 10.7.1 (Lion)).
I have allowed access to the assignments folder from the remote Mac.
When the remote Mac opens an assignment file (.icma) it loads into InCopy properly.
When the content is attempted to be checked out, it errors out:
There are no local files on the remote Mac. The only software running is InCopy CS5.5 (on OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard))
    ==
I can only assume I am missing something very fundamental here and am hoping this is an easy fix!
Thanks in advance for your time.

    Nevermind. I figured it out.
In order to have FULL R/W permissions, the remote account needs to have administrative permissions OR each individual icml file needs to be modified in order to have R/W capibilities for a non-admin, sharing account.
I modified the "content" folder thinking it would enable R/W permissions to each of the nested icml files. It did not. I had to give R/W permissions to each individual file.
    Thanks for your time, Bob.

  • How Can I Get A Flash Movie to Access Local Files

I have a customer that has created a Flash movie to run off a CD.  The movie is basically a set of menus with links to access local files in the same directory as the movie.  i.e. Main folder (to be root of CD) has the movie, a Documents folder with PDFs, a Movie folder with wmv and mov files, etc.
The problem arrises when you click on a link to a file, a web browser is launched, and the browser tries to display the target file.  The movie was designed on a Windows system, and, mostly it works in a Windows environment, however, the links totally crap out on a Mac because the URLs are pc centric.
He is a rookie flash programmer so I am trying to help him set up proper links to the files, so that the files will (hopefully) launch the proper local app and not a web browers.  i.e. if the link points to a PDF, the Adobe Reader is launched; if the link is to a mov file, then QuickTime is launched....
Is there a way to do this?  All the tutorials I have found all seem to expect the flash movie to be running on a web server, and as such do not work when running the movie off a CD.
Any help or suggestions would be grealy appreciated.
A response ASAP would also be greatly appreciated as the customer needs to deliver 200 CDs of the project for a presentation tomorrow morning - I have to create the CDs...
    TIA

    Hi there,
Maybe you would want to use swfObject, i've been using it for
    a long time now.

  • BrowserLab won't work with local files in DW CS5

Any issue report you make about BrowserLab on these forums should minimally contain the following information. If it doesn't, the first response you get from us will likely just ask for the missing info anyway
    Subject
A descriptive summary of the issue.
    The body should contain:
    Problem Description
A brief description of the bug or issue
    Steps to Recreate
The steps we should follow to reproduce your issue. Minimally include all the following:
Does the issue happen every time, is it sporadic, or did it only happen once.
Are you testing on Mac or Windows?
Are you using the main BrowserLab interface, testing via Dreamweaver integration (and if so, what version of DW), or using the BrowserLab for Firebug add-on?
What is the URL you're testing against. If it's not public, let us know and let us know if you can send us the page source.
    Expected Results
Based on the steps you described, what you thought should happen
    Actual Results
    What actually did happen
    Thanks everyone,
    Mark
Using BrowserLab in DW 11.0 Build 4964, BrowserLab can't seem to work. Some not very intuitive places I have checked include making sure the signon credentials are in the CSLive window in DW.
In preview local/browser, the following messages are disappointing me:
Timed Out, Failed to Authenticate with Browserlab
    Session Expired, See Browser
It is on a Mac, 10.6.7, using DW integrated testing. I can log into browserlab and put a public URL, but I don't think that's going to be much better for me than having VMWare and installing free browsers on Mac and Windows, and given the failures here that would be better for local file checks too. I write this because I wonder if I will be disappointed trying to get this to work and then find out I have to pay a yearly subscription to CSLive to be able to keep using it.
This is on a private URL and I can send the page source, but I don't think its the page that is causing the issue.
    Expected results:
Able to preview page in any browser of my choosing
    Actual results:
Spent the last two hours navigating help, googling possible solutions, getting many errors trying to navigate the Adobe help and forums, continually signing in on each adobe page I open. Expecting to have to reauthenticate to post this message. (Updated extension manager as well).

    Hi,
First, there is no charge currently for using CSLive and there won't be any charge for another year.
Second, based on what you're saying about the behavior you're seeing with BrowserLab and the issues you had with continually having to sign onto the Adobe pages, it's a strong indication that you've got cookies disabled in your browser or that something on your machine is deleting/expiring the cookies we are trying to set. What browser/version are you using and what kinds of permissions have you got set for cookies in that browser? Can you check that and change your cookie permissions for Adobe.com at least?
Let me know if that helps or not,
    Mark

  • QT Plugin 7.1.5 can't play local files

I have several webpages that use the embedded quicktime plugin to play movies on the page. These movies are large so they are downloaded to the local machine in advance where the plugin plays them from the local file. This has worked fine until upgrading to the QT Plugin version 7.1.5. With the new version, if I try and play the movie from a local file, the movie wont play, instead I get the quicktime logo with a question mark. I can play the movie just fine from the full quicktime install, or if I use the plugin to stream the video from a url off the server, instead of the local hard drive. This problem exists when viewing the webpage in Internet Explorer 6, I have not tried IE 7 or Firefox yet.
Is there a parameter within the QT Plugin, or within the browser that I need to set to allow playing a local file from a html page served by a remote server, or is this a case where tightened security is going to kill me? Thanks for any suggestions.
Windows XP Pro   IE 6, QT Plugin 7.1.5

    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
The link above is a QuickTime Media Link file. Simple text based URL that will download a very tiny file to the viewers computer (Mac or PC).
It will launch the QuickTIme Player app (bypassing the browser plug-in).
You could use the QuickTime files already on your server (and already being downloaded) as the "source" in the Media Link file so there is no increase in your bandwidth load. Viewers can also load your file (from cache) by clicking on the .qtl file again saving you some bandwidth.

  • Is it possible to create a new "Sent" mailbox stored locally on my Mac

I want to create one or more new "sent messages" mailboxes locally on my Mac.
Mailboxes used for incoming mail have the "From" column visible by default, whereas "sent" mailboxes have the "To" column visible by default.
I have imported several MBOX files containing thousands of sent messages that once lived in Entourage. They are sorted by year and other criteria, so I don't want to mix all these messages with my existing Mail "sent messages" box.
The messages imported perfectly. However, the new mailboxes on Mail are "inbox" mailboxes and therefore the "From" column is visible -- they all show up as being from me -- not surprising, because I sent them, but not helpful. Changing the column in the "View" menu is not a good fix, because it applies the change to all mailboxes. So if I change the column to show "To" then this fixes the problem but causes the opposite problem in all my inboxes -- it shows the messages as addressed to me.
I think I need to define the new mailbox as a sent items box, but I don't know how to do it. I've tried dragging the mailbox to the "Sent" icon in the left side toolbar, but that does not work.
Is there a way to do this?

    DXB Law wrote:
Thanks, but this does not achieve what I want to do. Adding the "to" column means you are adding it to all mailboxes -- including boxes containing inbound mail.
no, that's not true. Sent Mailbox is special and allows column customization independent of other mailboxes. all other mailboxes do have the same columns.
I don't want to do that. While I could have both the "to" and the "from" column active, that uses up too much screen real estate.
I want the locally stored mailbox to behave the same way as a Sent mailbox. Sent mailbox shows only the "To" column and not the from without affecting the view in the other mailboxes.

  • I need to intercept all local files that are being loaded in Firefox. How can that be achieved?

I am using geckofx in c#. I need to intercept response of a local file load request so that I can modify some data/response before it reaches Javascript.
In short, I need something like
    1. JS requests browser to read a file.
    2. Browser reads content of a file.
    3. MAKE SOME MODIFICATIONS TO DATA (Additional Step)
    4. Then pass this modified data to JS to perform required tasks.
Is this possible? If yes, how can this be achieved.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • What are .localized files?

What do the 0 byte files named ".localized" do? I've found this explanation online:
"In Mac OS X folders name is always the same, regardless of the localization, but the Finder has the ability to show some names in a localized form.
The ".localized" are 0 bytes file stored in several folders, this placeholder tells the Finder that the folder is a "localizable" folder."
which doesn't really help me! Are they simple bookmarks which tell Finder that the files are stores locally, and can therefore be displayed and handled differently from remote files?

The '.localized' files just indicate (by their presence) that apps should display the "localized" name for a given folder if one has been defined. So for example, instead of the folder names that 'ls' would show as "Library" or "Users", someone with their language set to "French" in the "International" pref pane would see "Bibliothèque" or "Utilisateurs" in "Finder" or through "Open" and "Save" dialogues.
This can sometimes cause confusion - for example, a person once posted that they accidentally renamed their "Public" folder, but after changing it back, other users could no longer access their folder over the network. It turns out that the person had a non-English language setting, and had renamed the folder back to the visible "localized" name, which had the effect of changing the folder's actual name from "Public" to something else. Since they were translating everything to post to this site, it took a while before everything was sorted out...

  • Writing local files from applet

Hi, I want to write an image file from an applet (appletviewer) to the local file system. Does anyone have any idea how I can do it? I tried using the FilePermission class but failed in doing so.
Thanx for any help in advance

I need to do this too.
Specifically I need to allow the user of an applet to write (text) files to his own local file system.
The applet displays graphical material to the user and I want the user to be able to type in comments to a text box which are then recorded by the applet - and ideally can be retrieved and used by the applet on subsequent occasions - as well as, of course, being available to the user via other programs.
Presumably I need to use a signed applet.
I want this to be as simple as possible so that the user (who will be unsophisticated) can be on Mac, Windows, Unix, Linux etc.
Anyone know a good reference text or tutorial?
(I am currently working with JAVA 2 fourth ed by Herbert Schildt)

  • How to exchange big files between mac users through the internet?

How can we send and receive big files between Mac users (apart from Dropbox) ?

If you aren't on the same local network (which I assume you aren't), then the easiest solution is to use Google.
If you simply google "sending large files" you will get hundreds of suggestions/applications.
Ie Dropbox, Google, YouSendIt, FTP, etc

  • HT4914 iTunes Matching Songs WITHOUT Local Files

So my music collection is nearly 12,000 songs. I built it for nearly 10 years, and cherish it. Sadly, however, the external hard drive I stored all my music on is dead, and the backup files are corrupted. (This is what happens when you go back to Windows ) So now I'm left with options of expense: A) I can hire a data recovery service (my first quote was $1,200- completely out of my price range), B) Start allllllll over again, or (hopefully) C) sign up for iTunes Match and match all of the music that could at least be found in the iTunes catalogue.
Here's my question: If I sign up for iTunes Match, and drop the (totally reasonable) $25, will iTunes scan my Library as it is, or does it require that I have the local files? If it needs the local files, then the $25 will be for little more than the option of giving me cloud access to the few files I have left. However, if it scans my library (which I'm generally very anal about organizing) and gives me even HALF of my music back, then it's worth its weight in gold.
Too Long, Didn't Read: does iTunes Match scan local files, or does it just look at the library that is still in my iTunes?
    Please help!

Well, the computer was on all day while I was at work, but I don't think anyone would have come in the house and deleted my music files from iTunes. Anyway, I think the best approach would be to add the entire media folder back into iTunes. I tried it with one song and it initially showed a duplicate, but then iTunes match did an update and removed the duplicate song. I'll do that this evening just before I'm done using the Mac and let the process happen overnight.
