Local host name

I have a small network using an AirPort Extreme with 2 Mac computers connected to the device by ethernet and one notebook, an iPad and an iPod Touch with wireleass connections. I am occasionally getting messages "This computer's local hostnamne "xxxx-xx.local" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "xxx-xx.local"." When this happens, I usually have the main computer on but the other ethernet connected commputer and the notebook are off. The iPad and iPod are on. I don't understand why this message appears. It doesn't seem to effect anything. But it happens every now and then without my changing any settings.

Thanks for the question. It sounds like another computer on your network may have a similar local hostname. You can change your hostname in System Preferences > Sharing:

Local hostname: Your computer’s local hostname, or local network name, is displayed on your local network so others on the network can connect to your Mac.
Your computer’s local network name is displayed beneath the computer’s name at the top of Sharing preferences.
The local network name is your computer’s name with “.local” added, and any spaces are replaced with hyphens (-). For example, if your computer’s name is My Computer, your local network name is “My-Computer.local.” Local network names are not case sensitive, so “my-computer.local” is the same as “My-Computer.local.”

Local host name already in use

I routinely get a message saying "local host name is already in use on this network. The name has ben changed to...."

Is this a home network or a workplace network?
If you open up terminal.
Go to Applications> Utilities> Terminal and type in hostname
what comes up?

DNS or Local Host Name Issue

I have an iMac, 10.6.2 that continues to get a duplicate IP address error. I have determined that this iMac is seeing itself as another machine on the network, hence the duplicate IP error. I have changed the local host name under system preferences -->network (and in sharing) to imac10.6.2-username However, on the WINS tab of system preferences-->network the computer name shows as imac 9B14C4. I have manually changed this on the WINS tab and but it doesn't actually change it. I have flushed DNS and used the scutil--gethostname command to no avail. Additionally, this iMac does not show up when browsing the network from any machine on the network. All other Macs here do. Any suggestions?

Actually I can browse to it through the network by either the DNS name or the WINS name, even though I tried to make them the same.

I use a Mac mini as a small AV server, and have exactly the same issue. Message keeps popping up at least once a day. Changing name in Preferences doesn't make any difference. After a few weeks it's gone from 'Centerstage' to 'Centerstage-8'. I even formatted the HD and installed Leopard and after that Snow Leopard. Didn't solve anything. Very irritating. Apple only recognizes this as a Mac OS X server issue.
Help.

New Local host names

I am brand new to macs and still don't have a lot of it down yet, so this question may seem pretty simple.
When I turn on my mac, it has started telling me that my local-host-name is already being used and that I need to use a new one. For example:
XXXXXXXXX-2.local is already being used, please use XXXXXXXX-3.local etc.
That's not the exact wording but the basic idea of it. I think that it's affecting my ability to connect to my external harddrive through my router.

Is this alright? I would think that this isn't how it should operate. Is there a way that I can close/log-off of x-x-computer-5.local?

System tried to change local host name

A screen message with an exclamation mark showed up on my Mac Mini screen this morning which says: This computer's local hostname . . . is already in use on the network. The name has been changed to . . . (then inserted the current host name (# 2). I don't know what to make of this, and fear some kind of hacking. If this could be the case what can I do to find out? The only other thing I can think of is that I left my Time Machine on & it tried to do a full backup with my backup drive full. Anyone else have this happen?

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.

Local host name keeps changing

My mac just started giving me a weird message when it wakes up after going to sleep. This computer's local hostname "Macintosh-8.local" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "xxxxxx-9.local". To change the local hostname, open System Preferences and click Sharing, then click "Edit" and type the name in the Local Hostname field. This is about the 8th time it's done this to me in the last couple weeks.

This also happened to me over the last few months when my iMac was connected to an Airport Extreme via ethernet, with wifi turned off. There are no other units on the network with the same name; eventually my iMac name incremented to (name)8756. After much research on this and other support sites (and many attempts following sugestions, including rebuild) I found that removing the ethernet connection and using wifi only fully resolved the issue. My problem is that other macs connecting to the shared disk and printer on the iMac are now slower and I cannot sleep the iMac. When connected to the AE I used "wake up on ethernet request", which I believe caused the issue due to interactions between the iMac, router and the AE bonjour service. I can connect the disk directly to the AE, but I repeatedly read that Apple do not support Time Machine on AE shared disks - even though they work better and more reliably than the shared iMac disk.
iMac now on 10.7.4; AE on 7.6.1. I do not know precisly when the issue started. The issue is totally repeatable - just connect to the AE via ethernet, turn off wifi. I suspect a bug somewhere, any help would be appreciated as I like the previous speed and do like to sleep the iMac.

Getting this message all the sudden - what is it about? This computer’s local hostname “first name -last name-iMac-6.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “first name-last name-iMac-7.local”.

Computers local host name is already in use

I keep getting a message that states "This Computers local hostname [my i-mac name] is already in use on this network.
The name has been changed to [my i-mac name-2].
This happens a lot and I am now up to [my-imac name-88]
Do I have the settings wrong? Can anyone help me so that this doesnt continue.
I am not sure if someone is trying to gain access to my mac or not?

Keep getting error message about my computers local host name already in use

I keep getting the following random error message popping up on my desktop. The last time it said the same thing, but imac-2.local? Haven't changed anything to my knowledge.

If that's not the issue, shut down any virtual machines (Parallels, VMware, or VirtualBox) that are running.
Sometimes there's no identifiable reason for the behavior.

Changing local host name

I would like to change my command prompt at the terminal window. At present it is shown as <mycompletename@XXXXXXX>
where "mycompletename" is well my name and xxxxxxxxx are some alpha numeric characters. How can i get rid of this alphanumberic characters? i tried using hostname -s XXX, but its not permanent. Some more searching said to change hostconfig in /etc, but i dont see anything as HOSTNAME-AUTOMATIC, in there. Another option which works is PS1='something', however, this is also not permanent. I am not sure what else i can do to change name of command prompt to show myname@somethingdifferent.
Is there any thing i can do with on my .bash_profile in my home directory? or any thing else? please guide. I am the admin of the computer, however i have not set any root.

I've checked your other thread. I fear, you misunderstood my first posting. There I said:
Add the following line:
HOSTNAME=$HOSTNAME
where $HOSTNAME is the hostname you want to set.
That means:
Replace $HOSTNAME with the actual hostname you want to give the computer. The line should finally have looked something like 'HOSTNAME=MacBook'.
Sorry, but I was under the impression you would know at least some basics in script programming and how to use variables and how to read other people's code. I guess my instructions where just not clear enough.
The problems you describe in your other thread are because the root filesystem is mounted read-only in single user mode. You need to remount the filesystem read-write before you can make any changes to files.
I just took a quick look at Google to find the neccessary commands. I've just tested it on my MacBook, worked perfectly.
1. Boot the Mac into single user mode by pressing and holding 'Command + S' during boot time.
2. When you're at the command line type the following:
/sbin/mount -wu /
That will remount the root filesystem read-write and you'll be able to edit the system files.
3. When you're done editing, save the file. If you're using vi ignore the message about not being able to safe some temp vi file. Just hit ENTER once. After that type 'exit', hit ENTER once more and the Mac should boot up fine again.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
Try to decrease the value of the pref <b>network.http.max-connections</b> from 256 to 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

Not an expert in the webdynpro.
You can check in RZ11 whether the icm/host_name_full is mainted with fully qualified domain name.
Also you need to make an entry in your local desktop in host file.

Host Name Changes?

Frequentlly, we get "this computer's local host name on the network is changed to 1234567654-1 because it determines that the original host name "is already in use." This doesn't make network peripherals and communication between our two computers very easy because we need to constantly change it in Sharing to share the printer etc... . When we get the notice, we change the name (number) back to the original and it seems fine for awhile and then returns...

I've had the same or a similar issue. My computer was constantly renaming itself with a (2) every time it booted, after a system lockup. I tracked the issue down to CD/DVD sharing... when turned off the problem went away.
When CD/DVD sharing was on, I could not change the name back to the original version, it would get rejected and immediately set back to the version with "(2)", displaying the message:
+The name of your computer "Name" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "Name (2)" automatically.+
With CD/DVD sharing turned off, I could name my computer whatever I liked, even back to the original name. Turning DVD/CD sharing back on again would instantly rename my Mac. It's very persistent bug!
Fortunately I found a fix. I was able to get rid of the problem by toggling Bonjour, as described here:

To turn Bonjour off:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
To turn it back on:
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
Toggling Bonjour (mDNSResponder) forced a reset of something on my system somewhere, and now I no longer see the issue on reboot, even with CD/DVD sharing turned on. I can turn sharing on and off at will, and my computer is never renamed. Success!
I don't think this problem has to do with CD/DVD sharing specifically... I think it's a bug in Bonjour. I've seen threads where people have complained about this issue because of printer sharing, or remote management! My guess is that a crash can cause a mDNSResponder config corruption, tricking Bonjour to share devices or services using the same name as your computer, forcing the name conflict.
In any case, I hope this fix works for you too. I know I'm a lot happier now that there isn't a lingering issue on my box!

Getting host name from applet

Hi All,
How can i get the local host name from applet ( Host name where the applet running) . While i tried with InetAddress i got only the loop back address 127.0.0.1. Can anyone help me out in this regard.

When you say you tried the InetAddress, did you try the following?
You could try creating a Socket connection back to the host/server URL from where the Applet was downloaded (you should have permission to do this). You can then get the local address of the Socket.
Something like:
String hostName = getCodeBase();
Socket s = new Socket( hostName, portNum );
InetAddress address = s.getLocalAddress();
String hostName = address.getHostName();
