Local name change on network

Hi everybody.
We have a lot of macbooks with OS mavericks registered to our domain system. Every time we change kind of network (wifi, cable) , a new local name is assigned to our MacBooks.
We  tried to modify the file /etc/hostconfig adding "HOSTNAME=-ComputerName- but it doesn't work.
We tried to assign the name through terminal command " scutil --set Hostname..." but it doesn't work too.
Do you have any idea or suggestion to solve this network isssue?
thanks

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.

  • Hard Drive and Computer Name changes on Network

We have 3 computers in our office: One G4 and two G5 (one with Panther and one with Leopard).
There was confusion on the network because all the drive where called « HD MacIntosh ».
I changed the names of all the computers in SHARING, I manually renamed all the hard drives by selecting the text under the hard drive icons:
The old G4 has 2 hard drives (New G4, Old G4) and the two other computers' hard drives are called G5 Carole and G5 Stephen.
Still, when I connect from one computer to another I STILL SEE « HD MACINTOSH » where I should see the new name I gave!!!
    What I am doing wrong?

    Hi pitou-
Did you try rebooting everything including network hardware?

  • Computer name change and Network name

Recently I changed my computer name from "XY Z's Computer" to one without the dreaded apostrophe and the spaces.
I did this in Sharing under Computer Name:
However, after doing this and rebooting, the new name is there - good - but if in Sharing Preferences, I click Internet Sharing and then click Airport Options, my original name is there, under the title, Network name:
Is there a single location where these changes can be made simultaneously?
Are there any other places where one might find the original computer name?
Is this a bug or simply something not well-documented that I should have known about?

i'd like to know how to do this also

  • Communicate with cRIO when IP Address and DNS Name changes over Network Variables

I am developing a LabVIEW software for an European Project using cRIO-9074 and RT Application Reployment to update all cRIO devices with the last version.
To communicate with the cRIO devices I have also developed some applications that are outside cRIO on LabVIEW Project that uses Network Variables to Read/Write to the devices.
When I am developing the software, everything works just fine because the LabVIEW Project knows the IP Address on my cRIO device. However, when I use RTAD to install the software and then my applications outside the LabVIEW Project, the aplications are, not always able to find the device when the IP address changes.
I have tried to replace the IP Address with the DNS Name but no success. When I change the router that is connected to the cRIO, the DNS Name also changes.
With this, my question is how can I solve this sistematic problem? Should I change any configuration on MAX, in LabVIEW Project and/or in the applications to be able to always find the cRIO? Is it possible to have a field on the application to insert the IP Address of the device to connect? If yes, how can I do this?
    Best regards,

    Quintino,
You can programatically open connecitons to Shared Variables.  This allows you to decide at runtime the IP address, lib name and SV name you wish to connect to.  I've attached a vi snippet the demonstrats an Action Engine to handle the connection to a SV named "Parameters".
I normally store the cRIO_Settings in a .INI file that is easy to modify.

  • How to change computer network name?

We're swapping 2 computers in our office. How would I change their network names to represent their new user/location? As well as changing the computer's user account?
The way our current setup is that each room has a name, and the room name is the computer network name as well as the user account name.

you mean the computer name is like "iMac-24inch-at-room-1.local" when you browse the networks ?
If so, Just change it in System Preferences->Sharing.
or the wireless SSID, eg. Airport connected to "Room 1" ?
if this is the case, just select the new room BS and set that in Airport Pref network.

  • How do I change security encryption name on WiFi network so computer will stop kicking me off Internet?

My Internet provider, Verizon, recently had me update my router to WPA2 encryption.  It was previously WEP.  Now, each time my computer goes to sleep it drops off the Internet and when I click on the Network icon on the top menu bar it asks again which network.  I select it and then a box pops up that says this was previously a WEP network and not a WPA2 - do I want to join.  I click "join" and then get on the Internet, but it is very annoying to keep doing this over and over.  I went into the settings menu for "Network" and tried a number of things to change the network security designation to WPA2 w/o success.  I also tried deleting the current network, restarting my computer and reselecting a network, but that didn't work either.  Verizon walked me through their methods to correct this and it didn't work.  The problem seems to be my computer has not recognized the change.  How can I fix the change to my router?  It seems as though it should be simple, but I can't find it.  I have OSX 10.9.5, Memory 4 GB and Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5.  Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Thank you Eric.  This seems to have solved the problem.  Now the only network that shows is my WiFi with the new encryption name.  I appreciate your  help.

  • Changing the network name on my wireless router?

I bought my linksys router a few months ago and did all the setup stuff that day, including changing the network name from the default. I want to change the name to something different, but when I went to the setup address, there was no box in which to put the new network name [I was on the Basic Wireless Settings Tab in the Wireless section]. Help please?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What is the model number of the router?  Access your admin pages again and select wireless tab and then select the MANUAL button.  There you will find what you seek (SSID).

  • How to change the network name and line name on iPad 4?

Could anybody help me how to fix this problem?
Previously I used qb (a mobile network in Cambodia) for my iPad 4 (iOS 7.0.4 non-jailbreak) the network name is qb.
The problem is that after I changed to use SMART (another mobile network in Cambodia) for this iPad the network name is still in QB and the Line name changed to SMART.
I don't know how to fix it now.
I have tried many methods as in restore through iTunes, reset network setting, reset all setting... but I still could not get the solutions.
I do hope to get it fix through all your experience.

  • Can I change the network name?

Can I change the network name on a newly set up Airport wireless network? I have just set up a new 3Gb Time Capsule and got so involved with trying to make it work that I just accepted the suggested name.

    I have a 2Tb in process.
If this means that you are currently backing up data to the Time Capsule, let that process complete before you make any other changes.
I think I can see how to change the network password in 'Keychain'. Is that ok?
No, you change the wireless network password the same way that you would change the wireless network name....using the same window in AirPort Utility that is pictured above.
Simply Edit / backspace out the current password and enter the new password that you want to use. Do the same to Verify and then click Update to save the changes.

  • Change Computer Network Name

    Hi all,
I'm trying to change the network name of my computer that windows pcs use to connect. Currently, to connect to my computer, I have to type "\\new-host.linksys\" in explorer to connect to my macbook. I've found where to change the "workgroup" that the computer connects to, but I can't seem to find where to change that new-host.linksys to something like macbook.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest you download Bonjour for windows.
Then once installed you windows pc's can connect to your computer using its machine name.
if you goto your sharing preferences and give your mac a name such as macbook
then its bonjour name is macbook.local

  • Officejet 4620 wireless network name change

I have searched this forum till i'm blue
I have an officejet 4620 connected wirelessly to my Mac running Mavericks.
It was working FINE until I recently changed the network name in my house.
So how do I get the printer to see the new network name?  Please don't say re-install the software?
On a side note there is a good chance I will be upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite soon. So if this will solve it then I will just wait for that. Otherwise, if someone can tell me an easy way to do this i'm all ears.
    Thanks

Hi @DeputyDawgATL , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're experiencing connectivity issues.  I'd like to help!
I would recommend performing a power reset.   Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I'd also suggest this document on Wireless printing center Troubleshooting Issues.
