Local Public School Wifi restriction on iOS devices

Hello, I'm inquiring about the specific mechanisms that contribute to  why some non-restricted websites have been blocked from being accessed in practically every device at a local public school. I and my other peers currently have access to the internet, passing its authentication and login requirements. However, some sites that are not even blocked ( which can be accessed on a laptop ) are not allowed on mobile device, why is that so? Is there any solution to this issue? Websites that contain important information based on different subjects are essential in letting students learn on the go and in the library partly because the library is always booked full with students and computers are always occupied leaving numerous students without access to proper internet connection. I appreciate any feedback and thank you for looking into this inquiry.

And if the site in question doesn't work even when not connected to the school's network, then it's a fault in the design of the web site, perhaps using Flash content or otherwise not being designed for mobile devices, and that would be something you would need to address with the company running the web site.
In either case, this does not appear to be an issue with the iPod touch, per se, and so is not something anyone here can offer much help with.
Regards.

  • Is wifi syncing with iOS devices encrypted?

Anyone know whether the connection between your iOS device and iTunes is encrypted when you sync over Wifi?
It's fine if it's not at home, but needless to say I can't sync anywhere else if that's not encrypted.

In the iPhone and iPad the image quality of the transferred photos is blurred and I am looking for an easy and quick method to use.
How are you syncing? Are you using Photo stream (iPhoto and Aperture: Using Photo Stream) or iTunes Photo Sync ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US )?
Both methods should give you good quality photos on your IOS devices - indeed I am seeing very good quality pictures in my Photo Stream and in the albums synced from iTunes.
If I am looking in my iPod photo cache, I see that all images synced to the IOS devices are at least 2MB in size.
The current setting for the Preview quality is global. You cannot set the Preview quality differently for different projects or libraries. What you could do however, would be to change the setting, recreate previews with different settings for selected images, then change the preview quality back.
And you can prevent selected projects from generating previews alltogether: Use the menu below the cogwheel in the Library Inspector to disable previews for selected projects:

  • Wifi roaming with iOS devices

I have a weird problem that I find hard to diagnose.
We have 6 iOS based devices: 2x iPhone 3 (iOS 4.2.1), 2x iPhone 4 (iOS 5.1.1) and 2x iPad 3 (iOS 5.1.1). Our Apple Wifi network has 2 APs: 1 Time Capsule (TC) and 1 Airport Extreme (AE). Both AP are interconnected with Ethernet cabling, the AE is connected to the internet and also function as the NAT and DHCP host. Both TC and AE run firmware 7.6 and are set up with the same SSID, both on channel 11. They are located at opposite ends of our apartment to create maximum radio coverage in the apartment.
All iOS devices roam from one AP to the other when moving around EXCEPT one of iPhone 4. This iPhone only connects to the TC and is also not visible in the airport utility (both the iPhone version as well as on the Mac) when asleep. All other devices remain visible in airport utility even while asleep.
Any ideas which settings to check to on the iPhone 4 that doesn't roam? Does it have to do with the fact it loses the Wifi connection while asleep?

Thank you for your response, however I tried "forget this network" and "reset network settings" before I started this thread and that didn't help. I find the restore option a little drastic measure before knowing what could cause certain behaviour.
To make sure I repeated step forget this network again, while being very close to the AP it fails to connect (=AE). I noticed that on the first attempt to connect it reports "unable to join the network "<SSID>". On the second attempt it does connect. Then it suddenly hit me that the problem may be on the AP side: the first attempt it tries to connect to AE but fails, on the second attempt it connects to TC. This iPhone was recently replaced by Apple under warranty and I use MAC Access Control on the APs. Normally you enter the MAC address of a new device on one AP and the new device shows automatically up on the access list of the other AP. However in this case I updated the existing entry on only one AP (the TC) and after checking the other AP (the AE) it still had the MAC address of the previous device. I assumed that changes to MAC access control on one AP would also be propagated to the other AP. Once I also manually updated the entry on the AE, it started to roam as expected.
One additional note: the iPhone 3 running iOS 4.2.1 do drop the wifi connection while asleep AND not being powered with the USB cable. As long as they have external power they maintain the wifi connection. The iPad 3 (using iOS 5.1.1) will maintain the connection in any condition. The 2 iPhone 4 are still showing different behaviour, one drops while the other maintains the wifi connection in sleep mode. This could be caused by a difference in apps running on the 2 iPhones. But I don't really care as it doesn't affect the user experience.

  • How to prevent itunes from connecting to my IOS devices over wifi

I have a MBP retina that is set to sync  (over wifi) with the iOS devices for myself and my wife: 2 ipads, 1 ipad mini and 2 iphones.
When I am launch iTunes in my other Mac - Macbook Air (mid 2010, 13inch, OS X 10.8.2), it will also start to connect the iOS devices - even though I am not using it to sync with my iOS devices.
How to prevent iTunes in my MBA from connecting to all the iOS devices in my house?
    Thanks.

I configured all my iOS devices to sync with my MBP Retina (over wifi) - but the problem is that when I am using my MBA, the devices will also automatically connect to the MBA Itunes over wifi when I launch iTunes in the MBA.
Is there any way to prevent auto connection to the MBA?

  • ISE 1.2 IOS device re-auth (device drops WiFi)

My guest users use web-auth for authentication. An issue I've run into is that IOS devices drop WiFi during lock/sleep. This means if they were authenticated, then they will have to reconnect/reauthenticate to the SSID. I would like to find a way for these users to automatically reauthenticate (assuming they are still within their original session's timeout value). Think two hour meeting. Is there a way for me to set this up in ISE policy?
    Something like:
IF user was authenticated within the session timeout value (6hrs)
THEN automatically let them back on without having to re-authenticate
    Thanks.

OK, I'm seeing a lot of "Correct Answer" type replies in another similar posting, but not a complete answer.  I have a similar issue, but only on a 2504 running 7.4.110.  I have two 5508s running 7.4.115, and they don't seem to have this issue, however I could be wrong.  Also, I'm running ISE 1.2, patch 2, soon to be patch 3 with the 5508s.  I no not yet have ISE working with the 2504, but that is coming.  We're not running Flex-Connect.
My users are a mix of guest users via the ISE Sponsor Portal, and employees, who authenticate via Active Directory.  I am having problems putting the specifications into user-friendly terms.  If I have to add a Registration Portal, I need to be able to explain who would use it and under what situation(s)
So, I guess what I'm looking for is what is the minimum OS I should be running on each platform to support ISE, WebAuth, and Apple & Android devices.
I don't seem to have Security --> Local Policy on either of my builds, so I'm guessing that this was added in 7.5.  Given ISE 1.2, is there some mimimal WLC builds I should be using.  Alternatively, is there ANY reason to NOT upgrade to 7.6
Tarik's link seems to include ISE 1.1.1, so I'm not sure how applicable it is to ISE 1.2.  I'm not opposed to using device registration for employee devices, but I do not believe I wishto do this for guest/sponsored devices.  I am not planning on a full BYOD rollout, so I do not wish to complicate things with an advanced license.  My understanding is that with AD integration, I probably don't need a MyDevices portal.
In short, I'd like guest devices to have to auth at most once per day, and employees should be good until their AD credential expires.  Again, I thought I had this working on a pilot using WLC 5508s and 7.4.115, but this definitely is not working in WLC 2504 with 7.4.110.
The only other thing I'd want to to be able to put the guest devices on one VLAN/SSID and the employee devices on another, but that's not as important at this time.

  • IPhone 4S with iOs 8 dropping wifi when unlocking the device

    Hi,
my iPhone 4S with iOs 8 (8.1.3) is often dropping the wifi connection when unlocking the device. This started to happen only with iOs 8, iOs 7 was just fine.
When unlocking the device after at least 2 minutes of inactivity, it seems to be weekly connected on the wireless network but then it drops the connection and reconnects back again at full power. This happens:
    - really, really often, but not always;
    - with any access point I tried (different wireless chipsets), both on DHCP and static addressing
    - with any wireless channel
    - both on 802.11g and 802.11n
    - rebooting the devices sometimes temporary fixes the problem (for 12-24 hours), sometimes it doesn't
    - restoring the firmware in DFU mode didn't help, neither did resetting all settings and restoring as new device.
I really don't know how to fix this, I can't find anyone else having this problem on the Internet.
Here's a video showing the problem:
    http://youtu.be/4ua9CPzKBfQ
    Thank you.

Started happening to me on my IP5 with ios 8, on public & private wifi, completely random and was really frustrating, I forked out for a IP6 128gb and was ok but its started to happen again so it must be an IOS8 issue. The unit keeps dropping wifi and asking for passwords it knows, ignores your input then comes back by itsself after a few minutes
To be honest Apple should be disgusted with themselves. The phone is pointless without wifi and if this is the solution it will not work as you cannot go to every router everywhere you go. $700 is a lot of cash for a useless bit of kit.

  • All of our iOS devices are displaying the message that they can't connect to the Internet.  All show good wifi connections.  Our Macs all connect to the internet just fine suggesting that the network is good.  I'm stumped.

Airport Utility on the Macs show good internet signals but on our two iPads and my iPhone 5 there are no indications of internet connectivity.  One of the iPads is running iOS 7 but the other is still running iOS 6.  The iPhone 5 is updated to iOS 7.
Is there a setting switch that if set incorrectly would create this problem?  Like I said before, all the iOS devices stopped internet connectivity at the same time.
Update:  Well while I was typing this I was called away to help get people to bed etc.  And when I got back I tried all four iOS devices and, now, they all connect to the internet.  I don't understand it.  Two iPhones, different iOS versions, and two iPads, different generations and also different iOS versions, all decided that they would disconnect themselves from the internet but stay connected to the wifi network.  Somebody must have an explanation for what just happened.  Remember it isn't the router because the Macs all had uninterrupted internet connections.  Weird!

I used to have a satellite connection to the internet. When ever the power went off I was told to turn on the devices in a specific order for them to work properly.
Try shutting off every device including all iPads, iPhones, computer, Wi-Fi router and Satellite modem. Then turn them on one at a time in the order listed below. Be sure to wait until each device completes its start up routine before starting up the next item. When my satellite modem was restarted it often had to download an update. The time this took varied with the update. So be sure the Satellite modem is up and connected to the Satellite before going to the next device.
    1. Satellite Modem.
    2. Wi-Fi Router
    3. Your computer. Check to see that your computer connects to the internet.
    4. iPad or iPhone and remaining devices one at a time.

  • Can I search email archive on iCloud server from iOS device, or can I only search what it has downloaded locally?

Can I search email archive on iCloud server from iOS device, or can I only search what it has downloaded locally?
I currently have an iPhone and iPad, and am soon changing over to a Mac. When that happen I'd like to try to see what I can migrate over from the Google ecosystem to the iCloud ecosystem.
    1) Currently I have the Gmail iOS app (a webapp container) that can search server-side of several years of email archive.  Can iCloud do this using the iOS native mail application?  Or is the search just limited to what the device has downloaded locally?
    2) Do I have to use a @me.com address for the full iCloud email sync to take place between server, Mac, and iOS devices?
Believe it or not I've read quite a bit about the iCloud services, but the answers to these questions were far from clear.  Many thanks for the help.

    2)  iCloud only syncs email between .me/.mac addresses.  For other accounts like google, you set up the account in the mail app and if they're IMAP accounts, you can sync between the google server and any devices you have defined that account on.
I'm not absolutely sure about 1) since I haven't had to search going back years - I use MailSteward for that on the mac.  On my iPhone/iPad, when I go into a mailbox and the emails are not immediately available, it downloads them.  I suspect for a search, you need the emails downloaded.

  • IOS devices can't connect automatically to known wifi network anymore (only manually)

    Hi there.
Just changed my old wifi router belkin 54g with a new sitecom 300n X2 (with 802.11n); after the change all my iOS devices (iphone4, ipod touch and ipad2) are not able anymore to automatically connect to my wifi network.
The network is recognized and after inserting the password the devices connect perfectly to the network, but if I switch off the wifi interface and then i switch it on again the devices don't connect to the known network automatically, I have to tap on my network in the list to join it, even if password is not requested anymore (just once, when connecting for the first time). My Macbook and other Android devices are automatically connecting fine.
I tried to forget the network and reconnect to it, I did a reset of the network stack under Settings->General->Reset, I did a device reset but nothing worked.
I even tried to limit channel bandwidth of the router to 20 Mhz (suggestion found in a forum) but no success, and I also changed the wifi channel to avoid interference, but again no success.
Any help will be really appreciated.
    Thanks a lot and regards.

  • Wife and I have separate iOS devices, separate iCloud accounts. But we both want to access mail from the iMac (OSX Mavericks.) Currently only my mail is linked. How to configure so that wife's iCloud mail can be seen  on iMac. Simple and explicit please!

My wife and I have separate ioS devices (iOS7)  with separate iCloud accounts.
So we access our mail separately on these devices. But we would both like to be able to access mail at the desk top (iMac, OSX Mavericks). Currently only my mail is linked. How do I set up the Mac to allow it to access my wife's e-mail too, either in the same mail inbox or a separate one. Simple instructions please!

If Mail in Mavericks is the same as earlier versions you can select accounts in the sidebar, so that you can either display the inboxes for individual accounts, or the contents of all the account inboxes. (If the accounts don't show click the disclosure triangle next to 'INBOX'). The layout may have changed since the version I have - Snow Leopard - but you should be able to do the same thing.

  • HT1386 My iOS device (Ipad mini) only appears in iTunes while cable-connected, but does not appear after diconnect the cable. How can I Wifi sync ?

Hi, My iOS device (Ipad mini) only appears in iTunes while cable-connected, but does not appear after diconnect the cable. How can I Wifi sync ?
    Documents say
Whenever the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it....
But I can't see my iPad Mini in iTunes.
And my  Ipad  (Settings, General, iTunes Wifi Sinc)  shows  a message :" Sync will resume when xxx(my PC with iTunes) is available "...
Both are in the same network,
Ipad mini is is plugged in to power
. iTunes is open on the computer
    what can i Do ???

Hi Skydiver119,  and tks for four interest.
I have done exactly as you say, but it does not work for me.
You indicated  " Navigate to the info tab and scroll down. There'll be a check box for 'sync over wifi' or something to that effect. Check that box and sync to affirm your choice."
I navigated to Summary tab (not Info Tab) and checked "Sync with this ipad over Wi-Fi"
    I disconnect the wire,
and my iPad disappears from my iTunes screen.
in my iPad ->Settings -> General -> iTunes Wi-Fi Sync -> says " Sync will resume when (my PC) is available.
So, I can not sync via wi-fi
I appreciate if you can help me.

  • My wife's new iphone4 (a replacement for a 5 month-old iphone 4 with home button issues) is not recognized by itunes. Every other ios device in the house using that computer and Apple ID is. Any suggestions?

My wife's brand new iphone4 (which was a replacement for a 4month-old iphone4 with home button issues) is not recognized by itunes. Every other ios device on  the computer/Apple ID in question is recognized and syncs perfectly. Any suggestions?

If the new phone has already been setup, make sure the phone and iTunes are both set to the same account.
You might also have to authorize this computer for the new device under the store menu.

  • Since upgrade to IOS 10.9 and associated iTunes 11.1.3, I can no longer WiFi sync iPad (IOS 7.0.3) nor iPhone (IOS 6.1.3).  USB connection is required.  Formerly I could sync both devices without locating them physically (not necessarily charging).

Since upgrade to OS 10.9 and associated iTunes 11.1.3, I can no longer WiFi sync iPad (IOS 7.0.3) nor iPhone (IOS 6.1.3).  USB connection is required.  Formerly I could sync both devices without locating them physically (not necessarily charging).  I have restarted both devices, turned off and on "Sync with this iPad/iPhone over WIFI" and restarted WiFi.  WiFi is operating (iPad has no SIM).  What next?

I'm also affected by this bug in exactly the same way as you.
Some users have had success by closing iTunes, enetering (on OS 10.9) settings --> network --> edit locations, then create a new location with the same wifi/network settings. Then restarting iTunes.
Others have had some success by editing settings --> iCloud --> de-selecting keychain
neither of these fixes have worked for me.
It appears that the iPad can "see" iTunes running on my iMac because when I open settings --> general --> 'iTunes wifi sync', "sync now" is greyed out if iTunes is not running. When iTunes is started, "sync now" is enabled but just doesn't work. Nor does the iPad appear in iTunes.

  • Is it possible to play youtube video in safari browser on WiFi in iOS devices ?

    Hello Support,
I have a query regarding playing you tube videos in iOS devices (like iphone, ipad). I can able to play youtube videos in safari browser in iphone on 3G data connection but can not play the same video on WiFi. I am facing the same issue in the youtube iOS application also. Is it possible to play youtube video on WiFi in iOS devices ? Please help me to fix this issue.
    Thanks

My understanding is that you should definitely be able to play youtube videos using a Wi-Fi network. To me, it sounds as though the issue may be more network related as the videos will work over cellular data. I have a couple questions I believe could help narrow down the exact issue:
    • Is the device able to browse to other websites while connected to Wi-Fi, or will no sites work?
    • Are there other devices (iPads, iPhones, computers, etc) that work on the same Wi-Fi network?
These are some troubleshooting articles that come to mind as well:
