Local raid storage: G-Speed, CalDigit, etc?

Hello, looking for some storage recommendations. I'm going to be cutting a low-budget feature in the next couple of months. The footage will be coming off a 7D so I'll be looking for a raid solution, Raid 5 perhaps? I'll be cutting on an Imac and Macbook Pro (I know, I know...), so currently the best connection will be Firewire800. Although, I'd like to keep an eSATA port on board for future uses. I was thinking of the G-Speed Q, 4TB as it can do Raid 5, with the internal controller. Any other companies I should be looking at, specific drives?
Thanks!

Hi -
Within your budget, you could buy two of these, run them in raid 0 and keep one as cloned backup of your source material in case of drive corruption or failure.

  • Pegasus RAID Storage with Thunderbolt opinions / backup solutions?

I'm trying to get some opinions about the Pegasus RAID Storage with Thunderbolt
    http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?m=192&region=en-global&rsn1=40&r sn3=47
since I've been researching some info for a friend who is looking for extremely reilable local storage solution for his record label.
Does anyone here use this? If so, do you use it with Time Machine? And also what type of RAID setup did you use?
I was thinking of a RAID 5 setup, since I feel that would be best in the long run should any drives fail, the backed up data would still be available on the other drives even if the performane is a bit slower until the failed drive is replaced. I would like to hear about people's experience with these drives and RAID setups. Also if anyone might want to suggest other disk options, please feel free to mention them here.
This would mostly be for "Setup 1" which is mostly audio production dedicated.
There is also a need for a "Setup 2" which would be mostly business/document dedicated.
Would it be better to get another smaller local back up solution for Setup 2?
We're not too keen on using Time Capsule for Setup 2 as their long term performance does have a great track record.
We're also going to be using Carbonite to have an offsite/remote backup of everything we have locally, but I'm not too familar with their services as well and if anyone here can comment on that I would apprecaite it. I've read up a bit on them and I would think to probably use their Business level service.
Any help, advice, opinions are welcome and appreacaited!
    Thanks!

You can (re-)install to the Pegasus raid and boot from it.
However, you'll actually get a faster system if you use an SSD for the system drive and then just use the Pegasus for data files (and Time Machine backups of the SSD ...).
    In any case:
Be sure to use the Promise Utility (download it from their site) to configure the RAID level etc if you don't want the default RAID 5 configuration.  (For me I prefer RAID 6 if there are more than 4 drives, RAID 1 for 2 drives and RAID 10 for 4 drives – RAID 5 is just too risky; even configured with a spare).
If you use the Pegasus as your system drive, consider using RAID 10 on it.  You'll "only" get 6 TB storage; but it'll be fast and quite safe (much safer than RAID 5).

How can this be the case when I haven't changed any apps from before updrading to iOS6, and I don't have any music yet on the phone?  Why is it telling me there is not enough local space?

    Hi RileyAvaCadenRiver,
If you recently updated your iPhone to iOS7, you will need to update iTunes on your computer to iTunes 11.1 or newer for it to correctly recognize the iPhone. You may find the following link helpful:

  • Trying to update apps on iphone and getting error message, there is not enough available local storage to download these items. you can manage your local device storage usage in settings

trying to update apps on iphone and getting error message, there is not enough available local storage to download these items. you can manage your local device storage usage in settings. What am I to do?

The storage you purchased is in the cloud, and doesn't do anything with your pad.  Your problem is simply that you have too much content on your pad.   Go to settings, general, usage, and it will show you how much space you have avaliable on your pad.  If you let the screen sit for a while, all the apps will be displayed, and you can see how much stuff you have associated with each.
You have to no option but to delete some of the content on your pad.  Videos, comics, pitcures and some music files use a lot of space.   The cloud allows you to leave stuff there, so you can get it when you need it.

  • Figured out the issue with local flash storage

OK , a lot of people have had the same issue i had with the local flash storage settings not working, or any of the settings for that matter.....i tried everything and nothing would work. After hours and hours of troubleshooting i finally switched my default web browser from internet explorer to google chrome and bam all the settings were back to working order. Hope this post helps.

bug is closed by Adobe as "NotABug".
Flash Players before 11.3.300.257 had different behavior that was more reliable: placing "Dictionary" object to the local storage allowed reading it as "Dictionary". Like placing "Array" resulted to reading "Array" from shared object.
With Player 11.3 it doesn't work anymore. Reading a property that was placed as "Dictionary" results to plain "Object" read. Any code like "var a:Dictionary = sharedObj.myDictionary as Dictionary;" returns "null". This is very annoying bug that resulted to our application not working for 2 days until we found the reason. I regret Adobe doesn't admit this a bug.
Writing this in order if someone of developers face with the same issue.

  • How do I manage local device storage in Settings?  I get a message that I do not have enough local storage when attempting to update Apps, and need to manage local storage.

How do I manage local device storage in settings?  I know how to get into Settings, of course, but not how to proceed beyond that.  Thanks.

Go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage and check to see how much storage you have used.
If you are deleting apps and other content, something about that message doesn't seem right to me. What are you trying to do when you get this message? Take photos? Shoot a video?
Try quitting the camera app completely and restart the iPad. See if the message goes away.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • TS130-11051CU Raid Storage Console

Anyone have any idea what Windows RAID Storage Console I can use to monitor within Windows 2008R2 Foundation? I have it all configured during bootup just fine, but would like to be able to monitor from with Windows. Especially helpful for Remote Administration...
    Thanx in advance!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanx for getting back to me.
Sorry, it is for the onboard Intel. I tried various versions of the RST (Rapid Storage Technology) and finally found this one here worked.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS013896
    However it didn't add in the "Service" & consequently I would get an error that the console couldn't connect to the service which wasn't even listed in the installed services. So I had to manually add the service by typing in the following at an elevated command window;
sc create "Intel RST DM Service" binpath= "c:\program files (x86)\intel\intel(r) rapid storage technology\iastordatamgrsvc.exe"
Then I had to insure that the “Intel RST DM Service” was set to Startup Type “Automated (Delayed Start)”
All is good now! I wanted to test it out on another system  & I tried the same thing on my own server that I had been procrastinating on doing for quite some time now (Intel M/board with same Xeon processor & Intel C200 chipset) but didn’t have to manually add the service, it did it itself.

  • RAID Storage Systems

Anyone care to recommend the best RAID storage systems for iMac, greater than 1TB? I read a review in MacWorld on the LaCie, but it is only RAID 0 and therefore not great for LT storage of prized and growing digital content libraries. I am thinking RAID 5 with data striping. I am new to the Mac world and would really welcome this forum input.
    Thanks
    Mark

I have three hard drives of equal size (300 GBs in my case.) Two drives are configured as a mirrored RAID (RAID 1) and acts as the permanent backup of the other. This setup provides redundant backup for safety. I use a backup utility to create and maintain a clone of the main drive to the backup RAID doing scheduled backups on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule. Here are some recommendations for backup software:
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
As far as creating a RAID is concerned a striped RAID (RAID 0) is similar to RAID 5 except it lacks the distributed parity. The OS X built-in RAID software can create RAID 0, 1, and 0+1 arrays.

  • RAID / Storage Rebuild... requesting clarifications for all ;)

    Hello All,
I'm replacing the 2 Seagate HDDs out of my home video editing system (CS5) that was previously configured as below, and think its a good time to get clarification on some items I never really resolved after many hours of research, to include where the different items should be installed/stored on a six-HDD system, and/or whether someone in my situation should completely re-think the system setup.
It was in the following configuration not out of original intention, but due to adding HDDs over time...
Intel RST/Matrix RAID via ASUS P6T Deluxe V2....
    2 x 1TB Seagate HDDs w/ 3 Partitions
C: OS & Critical Programs in 100GB Matrix Raid1 Partition,
D: Saved Adobe Project Files, etc. in 250GB RAID0 Parition
E: Rendered Outputs, etc. in remaining GBs RAID0 Partition
    2 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3
    F: Scratch files on 2GB RAID0
    2 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3
    G: Original Video / Media Storage on 2GB RAID0
    System Hardware:
    Asus P6T Deluxe V2
    i7 980
2 x 1TB Seagate 7200 HDDs (changing to something else)
    4 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 7200 HDDs
1 x Asus GTX570 Direct CU II (exchanging for a 2-slot card, as this 3-slot won't snap secure due to sata port locations, etc)
1 x GTX275 for additional video out (haven't actually tried 3 monitors yet)
    24GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
    900w power supply
    Cooler Master HAF Case
Various external HDDs for periodic backup via eSATA
Was Vista, ordering Windows 7 Pro
    1) Assuming the hardware remains 6 x 7200RPM HDDs on a P6T Deluxe V2 (sort of want to stay on it, since just got an expensive lga1366 cpu), which only has 6 SATA ports available...
    a) Am I even correct that the best editing configuration for six HDDs is 3 x RAID0 arrays?
    b) If so, how should I distribute the following items across the 3 arrays - OS, Programs, Adobe Projects, Scratch, Outputs, Original Media? I could never figure out from forums which items are the most important to separate from each other on different discs.
    2) Or should I really be modifying the system to allow more than the 6 HDDs at this point?
    a) Now for the really nebulous question... if I need to change, should this be an internal RAID controller card with more ports, or does it need to be an external setup?
If I really need expanded equipment, I'm ok with things like buying "faster" HDDs (10k or whatever) to replace the 2 Seagates if that's a strong recommendation, spending a bit on better RAID equipment if it is actually worthwhile, but...
    1. Can't spend a thousand to only slightly improve it
    2. Need a setup that someone of moderate computer skill and experience can setup and maintain.
In particular, the question of how to distribute the various items/ tasks across existing discs is likely of interest to many readers.  This is talked about a lot, but I'm really unclear on how best to distribute them and in what priority if you don't have separate arrays for every item/task.
    Thanks to anyone interested!
P.S. NOTE to other amateurs w/ my RAID setup... trying to install a large graphics card and somehow resetting the BIOS in the process is what spurred my current possible re-build.  Didn't realize it had reset, continued startup to find Intel RST not functioning, drives renamed and of course RAID0s inaccessible.  Then changing back to RAID setup in BIOS not effective at that point.  Since I have important stuff backed up and wanted to change out some drives anyway, not worth trying to restore the RAID and recover, but you might end up in worse shape.  SUPPOSEDLY if you change the setting back to RAID before OS startup, your arrays and Intel RST will function normally even after the bios reset.

I swear you are a benevolent jaguar, always lurking and ready to pounce at a moment's notice!
Information received and agreed.  That's exactly the simple breakdown I've needed to know for years.  I assume the 1TB on C: & F: is not a mandate, but based on already having 1TB HDDs on-hand (and also assuming it should be large enough to keep the disc usage % low)?
Unless I'm advised otherwise, I suppose I'll just get the "fastest" large capacity non-ssd HDD's I can (maybe velociraptor 600gb?) for the non-RAID single discs then (C: & F: drives), since I want to replace the two seagate HDDs anyway.  I guess both seek/read time and not just throughput/write stats are relevant for the C: OS drive, if not so much for the export F: drive.  For that matter, guess I could just SSD the C: drive, and Velociraptor (or something with more capacity) the F: drive.
    Many Thanks!
P.S.: Assumed the matrix partition wasn't a good idea... a hold-over from when I only had 2HDDs and was guessing my way along.

  • Familar with Dulce Systems Pro FC fibre channel raid storage?

I am looking for a good big storage that can use with 3 computers same time similar to Dulce Systems Pro FC. Have you use it or other product similar to this? I have so many external hard drives. I have to move those to other computer many times. I want to avoid those and saw Dulce systems. I think that it is cool system. Plese share your experience with it along with FCP and DVD SP. Before I make decision to buy one or not. Thanks.

You've a lot of assumptions there that aren't quite right. It doesn't matter if the source and transcoded material is on the same drive per se, but the transcode might go faster if they are not on the same drives. But there's no gotchas there in any event.
I'd format the array to be RAID 5. It's a ton safer and not much slower. That way if you lose a drive, the array can be rebuilt by just replacing the drive. Keep your scratch disk and all transcoded files on that array too. i.e, edit from that array, and render to it as well. Original R3D files can be stored internally no problem too, but if you're going to use them in Color, you might want them on that faster array too.
FCP doesn't use all those cores for sure, but Compressor can, and so do a lot of other apps appearing now, so I'd not think that the investment in an 8 core is lost for you in any event. Plus the next gen software may well take better advantage of the cores too. If you render in more than one app at a time, those cores come into play there as well.
Red Rocket won't care where the files are sourced don't think much... The speed of those drives matters most likely, but nothing else would make a difference don't think.

How do I download a movie to my iphone 3G?  When I click 'rent' in itunes, I get a message that there is not enough available local storage, but I can manage storage on my device in 'Settings'.  I have activated icloud, but don't know how to change my storage so that I can rent and watch the movie on my phone.  thanks for any help you can give.

I always do my Rentals with the itunes program on the computer.
Make rental from itunes store. It will show in movies under library, DO NOT click to play it. Plug in the device to the computer. Click the name of the device on left. Click on movies. There is an  option to copy to the device. Sync. obviously you still need space on ipad to put rental but you can have it take computers hard drive space until you need it.

  • How Do I Move Local OneDrive Storage Folder to Another Location?

    Howdy,
I've just installed the new 9926 build and wanted to sync my OneDrive data. I am using native VHD boot and so OneDrive setup wizard automatically chose the local
%USERPROFILE%\OneDrive folder as a local storage for the data obtained from OneDrive.
However, I don't want the data to be stored on my VHD drive. The OneDrive wizard didn't provide any Back button to change settings for the local storage location, so I had to use the location I've chosen.
Now how do I move the OneDrive folder to another location? Previously you could right-click OneDrive folder, chose Properties and change the location on the Location tab. Now there isn't such a tab.
Is it a step back in usability for OneDrive feature?
How do I move local OneDrive cache folder to another location?
    Thank you.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

I've found out that you have to unlink OneDrive from your PC and repeat configuration steps to change the location of OneDrive folder on your PC, just like you did so in pre-Windows 8.1 builds.
Is it a new behavior and MSFT wants to get rid of Location feature in newer Windows 10 builds, or it is just a temporary issue because some parts of Windows 10 TP code are based on pre-Windows 8.1 codebase?
    Thank you.
