Local Sync / SyncML

Hi here!!
Imagine: last of last Thuntherbird version, last of last lighning and last of last Windows or Linux (Ubuntu) desktop OS
Imagine: last of last PIM with last of last Android OS
Imagine: SyncML or other sync protocol.
Any way to "LOCAL" sync PIM with Descktop OS to thuntherbird/lighning/contacts??? "LOCAL" not via "SERVER/CLOUD"
Any official solution??
I googling and reading for a lot of days and only found older entries and blogs references, closed and discontinued add-ons ... and very difficulties to get an official or up to date approach for local sync.
Thanks guys!!

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply.
Nop! ... we're loocking for LOCAL (USB, bluetooth, Serial, parallel, ... maybe connecting to client ip on local network ethernet or wifi) as you can use with MS Active sync utility program with palm PIM/ android PIM and Windows PIM with outlook on Microsoft enviroment.
(not the exchange active sync protocol EAS via Exchange server) that you mention.
We're looking for an LOCAL approach without "Server/cloud" involved. A simplest solution possible to single/easy user with "a PIM" + "a Computer". User will not install own server or use cloud or external servers. Directly synchronization as is always used before "user forced cloud".
thanks anyway man!

  • Lightroom 5.4 to Lightroom Mobile sync is soooo slow - why no local sync?

I am testing the new Lightroom 5.4 with Lightoom Mobile. What really annoys me is the fact that all photos are going up to the Creative Cloud. I have private pictures which should be private. Always. No upload. No Cloud sync. It is important!
Speed is the next major problem. LR 5 is way too slow for a fluid workflow. But this is mentioned from other users.
What absolutely makes me sad ist the sync speed of LR5.4 to LR Mobile. 100 Photos took up to 4 hours. On a typical wedding I have 2000+ images. Depending on the speed of the first 100 photos I have to wait 80+ hours? Are you kiddding me? This makes LR Mobile unusable. My clients are expecting results fast. Speed is one factor to the next contract.
Overall, I don't want to sync anything into the Cloud. I want a to use my fast local sync via WiFi or USB. Only those two options. I want to sync photos even without any internet connection successfully and quickly.
I'm fine with authentication with Adobe servers for licensing verification. But that's it. The rest should be configurable by the users whether they Cloud sync or not.

Tom, thank you for taking your time to come here and enlighten us with the decision making process behind what was done. Like it was said before here, the Lightroom Mobile so far has been very, very frustrating. I came home very excited to test it and make my dream come true. To be able to take my catalog (or a shoot) with me on the subway, etc and be able to choose the photos on my iPad. See, I am a photographer and I shoot mainly fashion and beauty, so my workflow starts as soon as I finish shooting by importing all images into Lightroom and then going through the painstaking process of choosing which picture to use. I would shoot anywhere between 5-12 looks in a day, around 100 photos per look and at the end of the process I need to choose only one photo from each look. This normally involves going back multiple times to be able to get to only one from each look. The LR Mobile would have been the perfect solution for me, making me able to look at photos while out of the office, on the subway, at home, etc. It would have made my editing process much faster (or less slow). Instead, I've been sitting and waiting for 6 hours so far and only 18 photos showed up on my iPad (from the 500+ that were chosen to be synced from my desktop LR. Now I know it's not my internet that is making it that slow because I have 80+Mbps of download and 40+Mbps upload. And that haven't helped me much as my LR is stuck on "Syncing 527 photos" for the last 5 hours. Most professional photographers that I know deal with a huge amount of photos from a photoshoot. Wedding, fashion, advertising, we all shoot 1000+ images in any given work day. To come home and have to wait 100 hours before we are able to edit on the iPad is just not useful. This will be useful for the amateur photographer that will take photos of their children/dog/flowers and want to be able to show their guests the photos without having to get them in front of the computer.
Now I understand what you said about having to have a centralized place so that all the clients up to date on the changes, and I think that is great but I also think that it's paramount that there's a different way of syncing, a faster, more efficient way. Even if it is, like mentioned, not a "everything in sync" solution. Something like sync the desktop to the iPad and only those two work together. If both are changed before the next sync, a "the 'blabla' catalog has been changed since you last synced, do you want to overwrite it?" takes care of the problem, much in the same way that Photoshop asks us when we are saving something that has been somewhat modified by some external agent between saves. But the beauty of shooting all day, loading everything in Lightroom at night at the hotel and in the morning catch your flight and edit your shoot on the iPad while traveling, or being able to show the clients on the iPad right after you shot the wedding, or (what I was dreaming was going to be possible just to have my dreams crushed when started to use it) shooting tethered on the job and giving the art director the iPad so that he/she can see the shots without having to stay in front of the computer during the whole shoot. Now THAT would be a game changer! That was what I was expecting from LR Mobile but unfortunately got disappointed. I'd pay for the app alone if it did that!

  • Local sync of Contacts and Calendars

I have not yet upgraded to Mavericks, I usually wait to see how things shake out.  I just found out that Mavericks disables local syncing of Contacts, Calendars and Keychains.  This may be a great convenience for some, but I prefer to maintain my personal information locally.
Did I misunderstand this? Is Contact, Calendar and Keychain syncing only available through iCloud?
Has anyone found a way to circumvent the requrement to sync only through iCloud and allow local sync through iTunes like it works on 10.8.5 and previous?
    Thanks,
    Andy

This would be a reason for me not to upgrade.

  • Local sync with iOS 7.1?

Does iOS 7.1 allows local sync?

Note, however, that OS X 10.9 Mavericks at this time does not allow local sync of contacts nor calendars, regardless of the version of iOS you have.

  • Apple must enable local sync cal and contacts again

the question is why a company does not allow local sync and why they want to force users to load their private calender and conatcts to the free use of nsa onto american servers!???
maybe the same reason why mavericks is for free?
    maybe spondored by nsa?
apple declared that they do what they want, as long as it is acceped.
Am I really the only one who wants local sync of data and ***** on cloud computing?????
    best regards, florian

you cannot syn local anymore under mavericks and latest itunes.
that is it and apples does officially tell this.
    good morning!

  • Simple, local sync w/ activesync or do I need iTunes?

Prior to my getting my iPhone 3G I used a windows mobile 5 version AT&T phone. For work and home I had Microsoft ActiveSync installed on both home and work Pc's and could sync between all of them by simply connecting my old phone via usb to my windows Pc's. The PC at home and work would crank up ActiveSync and based on my settings it would connect and sync those Outlook folders I wanted sync'd. Now I have the iPhone and at the same time I replaced my home Pc with an iMac (applause allowed here). At home now, my new iPhone syncs up great using iTunes (and mobileme). At work however, I'm struggling. I am not trying to get "push" enabled as my company has a variety of blocks in place, only supporting BlackBerry's at this time. I am trying to simply sync up the way I used to via local activesyn connection (again, not directly to an exchange server using "push"). But the phone doesn't even connect to activesyn when I connect it to my work Pc via USB ...
Most of the issues I see on the web are those that are trying to get "push" working and I can't find any help trying to do it my way. I have seen where people are installing iTunes on their work Pc's, but our policies prohibit that.
So my real question is - Is there a way to sync with work that is not "push" via local USB connection and activesync to Outlook contacts, calendars, etc. ?
Thanks and sorry for being so verbose.

Unfortunately, as I explained, I cannot connect directly with the exchange server because our IT folks have put in place a variety of "blocks" (for lack of a better more informed understanding of what they're doing). Therefore, the only supported method involves, at least for the Pc and Windows mobile device, use of a direct local connection to the Pc via USB using activesync. Since when I connect my iPhone via USB to the Pc it does nothing (other than acknowledge the presence of a camera) I assume I have either not configured the iPhone correctly or this type of connection is not supported. Others are installing iTunes on their work Pc's, which I am prevented by policy from doing on my work Pc, and in this way they are locally syncing without connecting directly to exchange server.
Thanks for your reply, but it won't work for me.

  • Local Sync option for LR mobile

I want to ask Adobe to provide a local sync option between LR and LR Mobile. Going through the cloud each time is both slow and wasteful.
I, like many other have a monthly limit on my data allowance for uploading and downloading, synching through the cloud all the time uses up this allowance, additionally it is slow, it took me about 8 hrs to sync 1500 pics.
Please provide a local sync option for IPad, either by cable, or preferably, Local WIFI or even bluetooth.
Stop the waste and make it faster.
    Regards

I have the same problem, unfortunately. I've tried all above.

  • Local Sync of Calendar etc not working on Mavericks

I upgraded to Mavericks back when it was first released, but after discovering the unpleasant surprise that Apple secretly disabled local syncing of Calendar/Reminders/Notes, I had to wipe my MBP and reinstall the old OS from a backup. (My company prohibits cloud-based products of any kind.)
Recently an Apple employee told me that Apple had restored local sync in the newest version of Mavericks, so I upgraded again (this time to 10.9.4). Though it appears the local sync option has been restored, it's not actually working.
Mavericks recognizes all my Calendar data that existed on the MBP, but when I connect my iPhone to my MBP and sync it, no new Calendar events sync. (I created a new event on the MBP and a new event on the iPhone. Neither event synced with the other device.)
Oddly, the Reminders app on the MBP is showing some very old Reminder lists -- none of which are currently on my iPhone. And all of the Notes that were previously in Mail came over to the Notes app on the MBP, but when I created a new Note on the MBP and a new Note on the iPhone, neither Note synced with the other device.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Trashing my Calendar prefs and restarting. The MBP recreated all the Calendar events but still won't sync new ones. (Plus — same problems with Notes and Reminders)
There's a System Pref that wasn't on my previous OS called Internet Accounts. I've played around with the checkboxes on various email accounts I have, but that hasn't gotten any new Calendar events (or anything else) to sync locally.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to amend my previous post, but I got an error message saying I'm "not allowed" to edit it.
I solved the Calendar sync issue — for some reason iTunes had turned off all the Sync options. That's a weird default for Mavericks. Anyhow, turning them back on got Calendar events to sync.
But still no syncing on Reminders or Notes.

  • Any new thoughts on local sync for calendars

Any new ideas on how to achieve local sync for iOS devices under Mavericks? I am still not comfortable with using iCloud and would prefer to manage my data on my own. I am aware of options like setting up your own local wifi server and am intrigued by the 'devicesync' app on the app store. Anything else out there or do you know of anyone working on a solution to this 'feature'? Thanks and happy holidays to all.
    Marc

Hi nbar, and thanks for your reply. Apologies in advance if it appears that I'm getting on my 'high horse', as the saying goes.
First off, I'm not a power user....I've got a very simple set up with a 4 year old MacBook Pro. When I do my work I do it on systems purpose-built for editing or graphics work. This gripe is strictly about how my personal devices function.
I have a couple of issues. The primary is ownership of my data. I simply do not trust Apple anymore. The ease with which services like Facebook or Google rewrite their licenseing agreements without, it seems, a thought to their end users, leads me to believe that given enough time Apple will begin mining any data that you or I store in iCloud. This is my data and Apple has no right to scan it or use it in any way whatsoever.
Secondly, I don't appreciate being pushed into a 'service' that I do not want. I don't need iCloud to do my business or to live my interconnected life. Besides, in this day and age, 5gb is pretty paltry in terms of storage; after that I get the privilege of paying a monthly fee for more space.
Third, committing to the cloud means that any interconnected device that I have will use up more bandwidth on my data plan. If I have three or four devices connected to the cloud then every time I download something from iTunes it uses up 3-4 times the original bandwidth as the file is spread across my devices.
Fourth, and most disappointing, Apple was not very candid about the loss of local sync when Mavericks was rolled out. True, in the developer or beta testing community this may have been perfectly clear but to us 'regular' end users there was no real warning. I find this most disheartening as I bought in to the Apple brand as the anti-corporate, anti-Microsoft, maverick (yes, I said Maverick ). This episode, for better of for worse, has soured me somewhat on the brand. And by the looks of it on-line and on these discussion groups, I'm not alone in this perception. This feels more like a blatant play for dollars and less about providing new feature sets to end users.
There are a lot of reasons why the cloud is good for some people and for certain types of activities. And I'm not naive enough to think that my data is perfectly safe and is not already floating out there somewhere. However, to the extent that I can, I simply want to be able to choose where my data goes and who I trust to handle it. Apple took away my cheese and I want it back!
Thanks again for the feedback. You've been very polite to read my rant. Have a great New Year.

  • IPhone 5 contacts local sync via usb doesn't work - updated

    Syncing an iPhone 5, AT&T 64GB, with Macbook Air 11" mid-2011, 1.8GHz / 4GB.
    OS X 10.10.2; iTunes 12.1.0.50; iOS 8.1.3.
I am trying to sync my contacts from my OS X Contacts App to my iPhone 5 via USB. The contacts do not sync. The contacts are local, "on my mac". I am using a usb cable through iTunes.
The iPhone 5 was just restored by Apple Configurator, set up as new iPhone, and is supervised by the MacBook Air.
I am also synchronizing my local Calendars from the OS X Calendar app; these transfer just fine. This makes me think it is probably not to do with the entire setup of the iPhone, i.e. that it is managed by apple configurator, since some of the sync works correctly.
Under "info" in the iTunes sync dialog, I have selected the "sync contacts" and "all contacts" and "sync calendars" and "all calendars" options.
Interestingly, while the Calendars sync options displays options of "selected calendars" and a list of my calendars available to sync, the Contacts section "selected groups" is grayed out. I have one group in Contacts, and it does not show up by name for "selected groups". Instead, the area where groups should be listed for selection is empty. Perhaps iTunes does not have access to my local contacts? It is not listed under apps with access to my contacts under security and privacy, and it has not requested access to my contacts.
I created a fake contact on the phone and synced it with iTunes. I then turned off contact syncing in iTunes and told it to remove previously synced contacts. The fake contact disappeared. When I turned contact syncing on again, the contact was again pushed to the phone. However, the fake contact did not appear at any point in the OS X Contacts App, and none of my OS X Contacts appeared on my phone -- only the fake contact I had created on my phone and then synced with iTunes.
I also created a (different) fake contact in OS X Contacts. iTunes sync did not transfer this contact (or any others) from OS X Contacts to iPhone.
    SUMMARY:
    - syncing iPhone 5 via USB with iTunes
    - Calendar sync works
    - Contacts sync doesn't work
    - iTunes appears to have no communication with the OS X Contacts app; in system prefs > security and privacy > privacy > contacts, Pages and Word have access to Contacts, but iTunes is not listed. iTunes Contacts sync "selected groups" does not display my OS X Contacts group names.
    - Contacts created on iPhone sync back to iTunes and are restored back to the iPhone if deleted and resynced.
    - Contacts created on iPhone do not sync back to OS X Contacts; Contacts in OS X Contacts do not sync to iPhone.
(apologies for premature posting to "Using iPhone"; I accidentally submitted and now can't delete or edit).

Here's the resolution: I went to my local Apple store and spoke to the guy. After some discussion it turned out that one of the staff had had a similar problem. He suggested this course and I can report that it seems to work. So, (1) open your system preferences and then the print & fax setting and delete the printer in question (2) disconnect the USB between the printer and the TimeCapsule (3) shut everything down and turn off power to your modem, your TimeCapsule and your whole system (4) power on each item in its normal sequence (5) wait for your iMac to complete its boot-up, (6) re-connect the USB between the printer and the TimeCapsule (7) open system preferences and search for and install the relevant printer (8) try printing.
This is hardly elegant, but it worked. I am told (by the same Apple store) that hitting the "reset" button in the TimeCapsule might also work. If this is intuitive or obvious to anyone else then my compliments to them ...
    Cheers

  • Regarding local sync

    its a bit technical question!
In PC Suites of all vendors, the backup module is implemented using Sync ML or are there any other means of doing it?
    thanks.
    reddy

Sync local will never be promoted. Only sync alternates can be promoted.
In your scenario, your second server was never a backup. It had to be a
backup in order to upgrade itself to a primary in case a primary dies. Sync
    locals cannot do this.
Your second machine was never promoted to be the backup by your primary.
This is probably because your cluster was set up incorrectly, ie you
configured clustering on one machine but forgot to configure the same
settings on the second machine, or you forgot to restart both machines
after reconfiguring. (best is to shut down both iAS instances and then
start them up one by one. If you leave one running and restart the other,
then you did not restart your new cluster correctly. Note, this only needs
to be done the first time you reconfigured your cluster.)
I would advise you to use kregedit to view the cluster entries in the iAS
registry and verify that both machines are setup the same way.

    If my kregedit tells me
    Cluster name
MaxBackups=1 in my cluster name SyncServers list both my servers

To mind u, both servers have share same ldap config node on same ldap

I am a new Blackburry and Forum user and I have a Sync issue.
When I sync my Local Lotus Notes Address book,  its stops part way through the sync saying "Unable to write application data record." and will not continue.  I believe there is a record in my Address Book that has an error that the software cannot deal with, but as the records are not synced in alphabetical order I cannot work out which record is at fault.

pc suite only allows sync to local pc, not server. think that it has something to do with memory...
the steps are quite straight forward though. just go to pc suite sync, click settings, then new config/ settings & follow the the steps...

  • IPhone 5 contacts local sync via USB doesn't work -

    Syncing an iPhone 5, AT&T 64GB, with Macbook Air 11" mid-2011, 1.8GHz / 4GB.
    OS X 10.10.2; iTunes 12.1.0.50; iOS 8.1.3.
I do not use iCloud and I am trying to sync my contacts from my OS X Contacts App to my iPhone 5. The contacts do not sync.
Under "info" in the iTunes sync dialog, I have selected the "sync contacts" and "all contacts" and "sync calendars" and "all calendars" options.
Interestingly, while the Calendars sync options displays options of "selected calendars" and a list of the calendars available to sync, the Contacts section "selected groups" is grayed out. I have one group in Contacts, and it does not show up by name for "selected groups".
I am also synchronizing my local Calendars from the OS X Calendar app; these transfer just fine.
The iPhone 5 was just restored by Apple Configurator and is supervised by the MacBook Air. Not sure whether this could have anything to do with the problem.

@diesel vdub - I'm not sure where you read into my post that I expected an app would be digital handset theft prevention system, but, if you've used the app to locate a lost device, you'll notice that you can put a message on the screen, make the device play a very annoying sound and wipe the device. At what point would you assume that the app wasn't intended as a theft deterrent from it's capabilities? Please do go through the motions of using an app before discussing it's features and relevant merits based on your perusal of the marcoms. As someone closer to the trough when the device was first launched, I do have a very good idea of what the internal apps are intended for.
For the rest of the gentle souls who offered advice, thank you for your compassionate, sympathetic advice.
The first things I did in order were, reported the theft to the NSW (my state in Australia)Police, reported the IMEI number as belonging to a stolen device with my service providor and made certain they moved it onto the list of stolen iPhones.
My initial post was to express dismay with the apps shortcomings and to make those operating on my earlier foundation of faith aware, that reliance on the app is, in my expereince, a fruitless exercise.

For some reasson my phone also stopped syncing.
I found out, that the sync settings was reset. I think it happened during a sync where no connection was available.
I solved the issue by updating firmware
reentering "Sync What" og "Sync When"
Remender to go in to advanced settings and choose connection (Internet or wap)
    Have fun

  • Locally sync contact to Mac in the new osx Mavrics

I noticed that the new OSX Mavrics only allows contacts to be synced over the air through icloud, how can i sync my contacts to the itunes

Contacts don't sync with iTunes, they sync with the Contacts application on your Mac. With the release of Mavericks, you can no longer sync locally over USB. You can sync with any one of the following, some of which can work locally on a local network:
    iCloud
    Google Sync
    Yahoo Sync
    Fruux
    Memento
    Microsoft Exchange
    Your own CardDAV server
    ownCloud
    Baïkal server
    OS X Server
    + others
As you can see, iCloud is by no means the only allowed way using Mavericks.
Please read this long established, extensive, existing thread on the topic:
