Local TV channels

Hi, I currently have Internet services only with Verizon FiOS.Since my TV is not in the best position, an indoor TV antenna is not working properly for us so I was exploring the possibility of getting the Local TV channels through Verizon. I know you can get the "FiOS TV Local" which costs $12.99/month, the question is:Does anybody know if Verizon encrypts these local channels? They've offered me to get the HD digital adapter for an additional $11.99/month but if they're not encrypting/scrambling the local TV channels then I shouldn't need that. Option B would be using the FiOS app for Xbox, in which case I know for sure I wouldn't need that adapter. Thanks!German

Well.. I'm trying to add FiOS TV Local and even though they're not encrypting these channels they still require me to rent at least one STB. So, if I don't have a TV (just a computer) but I want to watch the local TV channels and buy the service from Verizon, you're obligated to rent a STB for an additional $12/month. I was actually planning on using the Roku player (as I don't have a coaxial outlet near the TV) so it's seems the only option is to rent the STB and leave it in the garage unplugged. I don't know why I was expecting something different from Verizon, all the cable companies are the same.

  • LOCAL Weather Channel 49

What has happened to my local weather - channel 49?!!! If I wanted to watch the weather channel I turn to 119. Now my local channel has national weather information. My dad lives in southeast PA and said that it took two weeks before his local weather was restored. Please put it back to local weather!

    Where are you located?
If I remember correctly, the PA outage was due to a hardware failure.
May be the same in your area.

  • Missing Local HD Channels

I've had a problem with missing local HD channels, including NBC during the Olympics. Despite multiple phone tech calls and a tech visit, my problem has not been fixed. I've been hearing that some other Verizon customers in the Beaverton area have had this same problem, and completely changing out coax cables did not fix it. My incoming signal is good, but signal to noise is below what is should be (19). I have a suspicion that it may somehow be linked to my DVR/set-top box, as the latest case of missing channel 508 occurred just as I started recording. Only two channels seem to be affected, 506 and 508, both local HD channels.

You are a long way away from the Crystal Palace transmitter and COM7 is transmitting at only 15,600 Watts compared to the 200,000 Watts that the other existing muxes use.  So weaker signal  may not be being picked up by the dual tuner Youview bpx

Can someone at Verizon get me in touch with him?????????
    Problem:
For the past 2 years I have had the local NBC in Richmond VA (WWBT Channel 12 on FIOS 512) affiliate occasionally goes completely black.  When I switch to the SD channel (12 on FIOS) the SD signal is always there.  I go back and the HD channel is still black.  If I am not watching and DVR'ing something, I will have various periods of black on my recording.  It will go back on it's own after a period of time when I am not watching and will come right back if I am watching as long as I power off the HD DVR to reboot. This has happened despite 3 HD DVR upgrades (started with the moto 6416, continued with the 7216, and keeps happening on my current 7232).  Never had a problem on my SD boxes because it is an HD signal problem.  Use HDMI and tried switching to component and had the same problem.  2 different brand HD TV's (Samsung and Panasonic) with same result.  Had the tech over a 4 times (replaced ONT once, other times detected no signal problems or connection problems) in the last few years.  Don't know what else to check as Verizon seems out of ideas.  Really getting tired of coming home hoping to see a DVR'd NBC program and finding it be black when I push play.
Still happening after last tech (Archie) came 2 months ago and replaced ONT (again) and the splitter coming in.  He said the splitter was a 4 branch and he put in a 3 branch.

I appreciate you may not be able to do some of the requests but maybe you can get some help from your son but in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Local PBS Channels

Will FIOS add WUNC TV (PBS) to the local Norfolk/Virginia Beach channel lineup?  We received both WUNC PBS and WHRO PBS via Cox Cable and are disappointed to see that WUNC is not on the FIOS lineup.  WUNC has excellent programming that is different than (and often more interesting) than WHRO.   jbsman

ssetta - WUNC broadcast probably is technically part of, or shares the Norfolk/Va Bch DMA (defined as
    Norfolk - Portsmouth - Newport News, VA - NC DMA 23.1 91.7).
Both Cox Cable and FIOS carry WSKY which broadcasts from Manteo, NC, well south of here.
To whom would I make a suggestion to carry this station?

  • Why does Verizon shuffle arond local channels?

    I have a question.
Now, I currently have DirecTV but I've been thinking about getting Verizon FiOS when it is finally available in my area.  One thing though that I'm noticing about Verizon is they appear to be doing this same crazy practice that the local Cable Companies does... It drove me crazy all the time...  Basically, it is where they shift all the local channel numbers around so you have to keep stopping to think about where the channel has been moved to.
For example in the Boston, the local terrestrial channels are like this.
    2(WGBH), 4(WWBZ), 5(WCVB), 7(WHDH), 11(PBS New Hampshire), 25(WFXT), ... 44(WGBX), 56(WLVI) 62, 68,etc. Simple enough.  Now thankfully DirecTV keeps this same pattern...
However on Verizon for say the city of Belmont, MA (Zipcode "02476") the channel lineup is like this.. 38 comes in on 3. 25 comes in on 8. 56 jumps to 12...  etc.  No kind of normalcy basically....
Why did Verizon do this????I see they already have channels going over 1000 so why didn't they vacate 0-99 nationally so the local channels can fall into their correct slot and then start the cable stations like say above channel 99???
In having DirecTV, I've noticed the way that company gets around needing to shift all the local channels all over is they start all of their cable TV stations above channel 99.  This leaves 2-99 as open- so that the local channel can goto its correct allotment anywhere in the USA.  It just seems logical to leave the local channels in their true slot so I'm wondering what was soo appealing about this type of format where everything gets scattered all over.
Does anyone have some idea of what I'm missing and perhaps if there's some kind of method to this madness-- which I've never quite understood?
    ~J. P.

I'm glad I was able to reassure you, but I now think I went too far. Looking at your channel listings you provide, Verizon has some major problems to make it all line up. And looking in more detail at ours, it isn't as simple as I made it out to be.
Verizon, IMO to their credit, has tried to standardize channel assignments for most everything around the country. Easier for them I suspect. Anyway, they start their SD cable channels at 50 in most places, I think; that means that UHF channels 50 and above must be relocated somewhere, and they do that, down into the low range. Here in Texas, some of the higher broadcast channels, but not all, are relocated - 27 to 7, 33 to 9, 39 to 10, etc, while 21 is on 21, 29 is on 29, etc.Verizon puts the local PEG cable channels at 30-47, then TV Guide at 48, and local weather at 49, then the real cable channels 50 and above. So all of the local broadcast channels that they carry are reloacated if necessary to below 30 here.
The HD channels (the ones that do offer HD channels) do follow the scheme I mentioned, local + 500.
When I made my statement earlier, I was really thinking of the "major" channels (ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS, etc), because those are pretty much the only local channels I watch, I forgot about all of the various smaller channels (religeous, Spanish language, etc) that they do carry. Sorry, I really didn't mean to make a mistake, I should have actually looked at the lineup first.

  • FIOS 1 and local origination channels in Toms River NJ

I am confused about what the status is with Fios 1 where I live.  If I go on my account on the Verizon website, and look at the TV Guide listings on line, it shows the channel in the line up.  I can not get it on any of my set top boxes, however, the channel is there through my QAM tuners on both my TV set and DVD recorder (SD signal only, not HD).
Friends who live in another part of town apparantly do get the channel 1/501 on their boxes, and it shows up in their on screen guide.  It doesn't on ours.
I really don't want to call about it as it will probably be more hassle than it is worth, and I probably wouldn't watch it much anyway, but it is another option and would be nice to have.  Anyone else out there having a similar observation?
Also, just discovered that the channel from Ocean County College is now on Fios on channel 26 (it's branded as Ocean 20, as that's the channel it is on for Comcast).  They show NASA TV on the overnight hours, for those who are interested.
Oddly, we are also getting the board of education channel for Kenilworth, NJ on channel 26.  Could that be a test signal for possibly getting the Toms River Schools channel sometime in the near future?  Strange as it might sound, that is probably the one channel that we had on Comcast that I miss, if for no other reason than it was the best early warning for school closings.  (BTW, the Toms River Schools channel is a lot more polished than what I've seen from Kenilworth, for what it's worth.)

Hey TR-Tim...thanks for you interest in Fios1. Currently Fios1 is available to Northern New Jersey customers. Once it becomes available in your area, you will recieve 30 days notice prior to it coming out.  Fios 1 is not encrypted which is why you are able to pick up the channel outside of your box.  Fios 1 is not currently available in your  market which is why it is not being broadcasted thru our boxes.
For your second question, your muncipalities makes the decision as to what access channels are broadcasted. We, here at Verizon, don't make those decisions. You can actually go to your municipality and ask them what their procedure is regarding local access channels and what kind of content you would like to have broadcasted. They in turn submit that information to us.
Thank you for reaching out to us, continue to do so. We are here if you need us. Thank you!

  • Use Coax for Local OTA digital channels.

I'm new to FIOS. But I remember Comcast allows basic local OTA channels using the COAX cable even when I was only a Internet Customer. I was wondering if Verizon was the same way? I'm only a Interet customer, no TV service. I basically want to split the coax, one to TV to get local channels and the other to the Router. Is this possible. I'm not at home right now otherwise I would of tried it already.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    TIA

Yes, you can split the coax as needed and you can put the router on any coax tap.
I don't believe FiOS provides any TV channels when you don't subscribe to TV.
The difference is cable sends the same TV channel package to every house with access control managed by the set-tops.  Unencrypted channels are available to all as there is no easy way to block them.
FiOS, on the other hand, generates the coax signal in the ONT.  It is trivial for Verizon to enable and disable TV service by adjusting the ONT.
If you want local channels and don't want to pay for them you should consider an antenna.
    Good Luck.

  • Lost PBS and ch. 5 HD channels in clear QAM

We live in Newton MA and subscribe to the FiOS TV.  We have a LCD TV mounted on kitchen wall that we could not find room for a HD STB and have been satisfied to have the PBS HD channel through clear QAM for the kids in the morning.  This seems to have disappeared along with channel 5 HD channel in the recent past and I have done repeated scannings to no avail.  Is the local HD channel signal going to disappear from clear QAM and only SD plus music will remain?
Alternative a very small HD receiver could be the solution but Verizon does not have such a STB for rent.
    Any one with similar problem?

I too suddenly lost most of my clear hd channels except for one. SD channels are there, but I didnt count them.
But when I tried with my tv card, it was able to pick them up(the missing hd channels).
Do you have another tv to try?  Maybe the qam tuner got damaged. Whats the brand of your tv?

  • Overlapping Channels and DVR issues

I wanted to report an issue or see if anyone else has experienced what has been happening to me.  I live in the DC metro area and I go to the HD NBC (504) or HD CBS (509) stations with no problems. However multiple times I have gone to either station and what is showing is not correct.  Sometimes when I go to channel 504, I'm getting programming produced by the local NBC channel, or when I go to channel 509, I get the weather radar.  When this happens on either channel, I just turn the channel and then come back and the correct content is being broadcasted.  I believe this is also causing DVR issues as well because sometimes when I got to watch a recording from either of these channels, I see the show recorded twice and only for 1 or 2 seconds.  It's frustrating because I have lost out on shows that are not repeated nor on demand.  Any ideas on what is gong on?

Is this common? If i didn't like my internet speed I would have dropped this garbage service a long time ago !
I'd just bypass customer service and swap out the dvr for a different one. You can go to a fios store, do it through your account on verizon.net or the easiest way, do it on the dvr itself.
Go to menu, customer support, set top box exchange.

  • Use virtual channel name as input to DAQmx Write? LV8 and DAQmx

I've created a task for digital output that contains 8 named channels using the DAQmx Create Channel VI in Labview. Is it possible to use the channel name as an input to the DAQmx Write VI to reference the desired channel? I tried wiring a string with the channel name to the "task/channels in" input but I get a -200428 error that says the Value passed to the Task/Channels In control is invalid.
The help "name to assign" input for the DAQmx Create Channel VI says
If you use this input to provide your own names for the virtual channels, you must use the names when you refer to these channels
in other NI-DAQmx VIs and Property Nodes
OK, so how do you use the name assigned in other VIs?
    George

    George,
I think that there may be some confusion here about the difference between local and global virtual channels.  First of all, please take a look at the following knowledge base:
Physical Channels, Virtual Channels, and Tasks in NI-DAQmx
As discussed in this KB, local global channels are created inside a task, and they only apply to that task.  In the help file for the DAQmx Write VI, the "task/channels in" description says "if you provide a list of virtual channels, NI-DAQmx creates a task automatically."  When you wire a string to this input, a new task is being created, and unless the channel name that you wire in is a global virtual channel (listed in MAX), you will get the error 200428 that you mentioned.  This is because that virtual channel that you are specifying is local to another task and is not associated with this new task.
One solution to this issue is to use the DAQmx Save Global Channel VI to save your local virtual channel as a global virtual channel before calling DAQmx Write.  Once this is done, you can then wire the same string constant to the "task/channels in" input of DAQmx Write or other DAQmx VI's.
The help text is still correct, but is only applicable in certain situations.  For example, if you create and name an analog input local virtual channel with DAQmx Create Channel, you could then use this channel name as the source input to a DAQmx Trigger VI configured for an analog edge start trigger.  You could also use that channel name as the input to the "ActiveChans" DAQmx Channel Property, which would enable you to modify the properties of that particular channel.
Hopefully this information is helpful to you.

  • Not rejecting unknown users on Submit channel

I am running Java Communications Suite 6.3(2) on a single system. Currently, when one of my customers sends an email (from a thick client) through the Submit port, and one of the addresses is to an invalid address in a domain on this server, the customer receives a pop-up error on their workstation and no email is sent. If there is an invalid address to a different server domain, the message is accepted and the customer receives a return email with the error message. Customers find it confusing to deal with two different types of error processing.
I would like to have mail sent through the submit channel (and ONLY the submit channel) handled such that the customer does not get a rejection during the SMTP dialogue, but has the email delivered to all valid recipients and receives a separate, email message with errors about the undeliverable addresses. I have a couple of questions about this configuration:
    1) Is it even possible? My fantasy is that it is just a keyword option. But it seems more likely that, if it can be done, it would have to be by routing through different channels (possibly locally written channels).
    2) Is this even a good idea? Might there be some horrible repercussions that I'm not seeing?
    Thanks

Make sure you also add "LOG_USERNAME=1" to your option.dat file so you can track down which authenticated user is sending email -- should you need to track down emails to a given authenticated sender.
