Localization in RoboHelp 6
Hi, I'm curious if anyone know what localization improvements
have been made in RoboHelp 6. I see localization listed as a bullet
point on the datasheet that is accessible from the product page,
but it doesn't really explain what that means. What are the 11
supported languages? What about multi-byte character sets? My
company is looking into doing some Japanese translations, but from
what I understand, the last Asian version of RoboHelp to be
releases was X3. Now that Adobe has resurrected RoboHelp
development, are there plans to release an upgrade for the Asian
version? Like other companies using RoboHelp, we're trying to
decide if we should upgrade to version 6. $500 per upgrade seems a
little steep if they haven't added any features that will really
benefit us.
Thanks to anyone who might have some info.
I asked the engineering team about Japanese support during
beta testing and I understand it is being worked on, but don't
think it made it into the final release. Perhaps Shane or Bobby can
tell us. Meanwhile these are the 11 languages supported:
Brazilian
Danish
Dutch
English
French
German
Italian
Norwegian
Portuguese
Spanish
Swedish
If not in this release, hopefully we'll see it sometime soon.

Does anyone know how to localize a RoboHelp 10 project?
I have a project in English that I need to translate to French Canadian. After sending the English files off for translation, is it best to import the translated into a separate project with French Canadian as the selected language in Project Settings, or to create a French Canadian project within the original project? I have not been able to figure out how to do the latter. Thanks.
If you are using an agency that works with Rh, they should send you back a translated project. Next upgrade you send them the latest version in English, their database tells them what has changed and they just translate that and send back another French project.
There are several threads on translation that will give you useful information and useful links. Try those and speak to your agency, if they work with Rh.
In particular search for Ben Minson's article. Post back if you cannot find it.

Can I use RoboHelp to support localization and generate help files in multiple languages?
Hi,
Can I use RoboHelp to support localization and generate help
files in multiple languages?
Can I define a layout or template for RoboHelp to insert
localized strings into the template and generate a localized help
file?
Thanks!Hi newbie_r and welcome to the RH community.
You don't say what version of RH you have but the latest
version (RH7) has Unicode Support that allows you to produce help
files in most languages. The exceptions are mainly the right to
left languages (e.g. arabic, hebrew).
As far as the template is concerned, you can assign any text,
image to a template and it will be applied to any topics you assign
the template to.
If you haven't already, I'd download the trial version and
experiment a bit. Set up a template with what you want and then
create a couple of simple help files containing just a few topics
each. That will reassure you of RH7s capabilities in this
area. -
Converting RoboHelp 7 HTML Project to RoboHelp 9 for Word Project?
Due to complications in localization, I've been asked to evaluate authoring in doc files instead of HTMs, since the tool we use for localization (Across Server) seems to work better (or so we're told) with doc files.
I've only authored in RoboHelp HTML with a CHM output for the last several years, so I'm unfamiliar with RH for Word. But I have used Doc-to-Help many years ago, so I'm somewhat familiar with the implications of using doc files.
How would I go about doing this conversion? Is there some utility that does this, or is the best way to export to a printed output and then import that output into a new project?
I'm also going to evaluate this using RH 9 since I'm considering upgrading from RH 7. I only have Word 2003.
Thanks in advance,
JaredRoboHelp for Word has only had minimal changes for the last two versions. Take a hint. Also enhancements to RoboHelp HTML outputs have not been mirrored.
I suggest you do some work in RoboHelp for Word and see how much you enjoy it.
As for conversion, open RoboHelp for Word and see the import options. Your idea seems to be the way to go, if you really really have to.
Oh, one more thing, you will not get much help in the RoboHelp for Word forum because there is hardly any user to user support.

Localization - Automated Screen Captures?
Hi RHelpers,
I'm wondering how many of you localize your projects, and if you do, do you use or know of any tools to automate the screen capture process? Our RH projects contain thousands of images of our UI in them and we simply can't keep up with our standard process of getting the localized .htms back from localization and then trying to get screen captures on the backend. We support 15 non-English languages and will likely add more. There's just no way to keep up without such a tool. Just wondering what you all use or if your translators take care of the images along with the text.
Thanks,
Jared
RH 7.0.3

HTMl Help (.chm) OutputI have since recalled the tool I was thinking of was an authoring tool and the problem I had when I looked at it was I couldn't write the topics the way I wanted and I couldn't use it as a tool to extract the images. I might have used it just for that purpose.
Take a look at http://www.indoition.com and download the PDF there. It lists lots of tools and may you will find something in that.
If you do find something that works for you, don't forget to post back here.

Languages not displaying in RoboHelp 11
We localize our documents in many different languages. When I was using RoboHelp 10, I had no problem opening the localized RoboHelp file and viewing it in that specific language. However, after updating to RoboHelp 11, the languages do not display correctly (all characters are just boxes). Any thoughts about how to fix this? All source files are the same, just opened in RH11 instead of RH10.
Do you mean Event or Album. If they all are in one Event you have two options:
1 - restore a backup copy of your library from just before the problem occurred.
2 - set the Autosplit option to what you want in the iPhoto General preference pane.
3 - in the Event mode select the Event.
4 - use the Events ➙ Autosplit Selected Events menu option.

Our company uses RoboHelp with the
Across
Language Server for our help file localization. We have some
very large help projects (largest is approx 2800 topics) and are
experiencing a lot of overhead with the files in the Across system.
We generate the help file as a .CHM help file and then decompile it
and send the decompiled .htm files for translation and then
recompile them when we get them back.
Originally when we submitted our ~2800 .htm files for
localization, Across would crash while trying to import our files.
So the Across people built a custom merge tool to combine several
hundreds of topics together into a single file to get around this
problem. So now, translators work on translating 20 or so merged
files. These are then split into their respective .htm topics and
then sent back to me for recompilation as the target language help
file.
Now we're running into overhead problems where there's an
update to our help project. Rather than just sending them the .htm
topic. We have to find what merged file contains the topic and
merge those files together and then resubmit it. It's turning out
to be a lot of work.
I'm wondering if anyone else uses Across with RoboHelp and if
you have any best practices for improvements? Or if there's a
better authoring tool for localization in Across?Hi James. You are right to be weary. I don't know this site but I'd be very surprised if you end up getting RHS9 for the advetised price. I know that Adobe do offer academic licences at reduced cost but not that reduced. Sorry I can't be more help.

RoboHelp 8 Crashes on Updating All Files
Hi there
I am using TCS 2.0 wth RoboHelp 8 and FrameMaker 9. I have many issues with this integration but that can wait for later. My current issue is with Robohelp that continuously crashes when I do an Update All. Files are linked between Frame and Robo. The last change I made was to the markers in Frame. I am having Robo create filenames based on markers in Frame (filenames are numeric). This is for simplifying localization. Anways after I changed some of the markers, not all of them, from a numeric filename to a regular naming convention (due to another issue which I won't go into here), RoboHelp crashed on an Update All. I tried to go back and change the markers to the way they were when things were mostly working as expected, but RoboHelp is still crashing. It's of course down to the wire in the project and I'd rather not spend time uninstalling software that should be working and should be bug free. So if anyone has any suggestions on getting this to work they would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I'm on Windows Vista.
Thank you
GerryHi Gerry
You say you are using Windows Vista. On that count alone I will tell you that you aren't using software that is "Bug Free". All software has bugs.
By no stretch of the imagination whatsoever do I claim to know anything about Frame other than how to say it, but have you tried simply creating a totally fresh RoboHelp project, then linking it to Frame? I suppose that's something I might consider, given what you have told us.
Cheers... Rick

Open project was canceled or RoboHelp was unable to load database
I have Robohelp 2002r2 and am creating Robohelp HTML help.
The project was ok yesterday but today when I try to open it I get
the error message "Open project was canceled or RoboHelp was unable
to load database". I tried the solutions in the knowledgebase
(rb_3245) but still no luck. I can't even create a new project
either or I get the same message. Anybody know what to
do????Welcome to the forum.
The message is usually easily dealt with. I haven't checked
the article as you didn't include a link but I'm guessing it
involved deleting a couple of files and then using the HHP file to
open the project.
What is more worrying is that you cannot create a new
project.
Have you tried opening one of the supplied sample files?
Are your projects stored locally and not on a network?
Have IT given you a new profile to log on with?
Has anything else changed in your environment? -
Okay, i just dished out $1000 for this thing and can't even
create an HTML project. The sample projects won't even open and
i've confirmed they exist.
Details:
installed RoboHelp 6. When i run RoboHelp HTML, and try to
open one of the sample projects, i get the following dialog:
Open project was cancelled or the application was unable to
load database for :
"C:\program files\adobe\robohelp
6.0\RoboHTML\Samples\ApplicationHelp\applicationhelp.cpd"
I navigate to the path above and confirm the path is correct
and the applicationhelp.cpd exists. So i press OK at the dialog,
and just try to create my own project. It only gets worse.
I perform the following steps:
1-In RoboHelp HTML, go to File/New/Project.
2- the "New Project" dialog opens
3-select WebHelp and click OK.
4-the "New Project Wizard" dialog opens
5-I enter a title and select a path "C"\RoboHelp6\Project1"
6-I click "Finish". The New Project Wizard closes and returns
me back to the "New Project" dialog.
7-(hmmm...must have done something wrong i think)
8-In the New Project dialog, i click OK.
9-I'm now taken back to the "New Project Wizard" dialog.
10-i repeat the same steps - entering Project1 as and
C:\RoboHelp6\Project1 as the path
11-i click Finish and get error:
Unable to creat enw project. Specified folder is not empty.
12-My only option to leave the "New Project" dialog box is to
click Cancel
13-i click cancel
14-i look in the folder and have the following files:
!SkinSubFolder!
HtmlHelp.css
project1.cpd
project1.hpr
project1.syn
default.css
MS_Help.css
project1.glo
project1.ppf
w95help.css
Where's the project file? When i go to open a new project and
select the directory no .xpj or mgj files are listed!!! Anybody
know what i'm doing wrong?
BTW: i uninstalled and re-installed the product 4 times now.
Still can create an HTML project.
PLEASE HELP!!!!Just to clarify, these forums are mostly supported by other
RoboHelp users rather than Adobe employees. The Community Expert is
simply a recognition by Adobe of the work I do in these forums, I
am not employed by them. I mention this as you ask Adobe not to
require you to wipe your hard disk. Actually you will need to wipe
the entire network to fix this one. OK, I'm lying.
It does sound like X5 has left something behind and that does
sometimes happen. First uninstall RH6. I am not sure what effect
installing it on a virtual machine will have had so fingers crossed
there. (Uninstall both instances though). Then go to my site and
see the instructions there for Installing. They cover some extra
steps that are sometimes needed. Try those which involve some
registry edits so usual warnings about backing up etc.
After you have done that, reinstall RH6 and then everything
should be OK.
Let us know how that goes. -
Project Error: Open project was canceled or RoboHelp was unable to load database
Hi,
I checked an HTMLHelp project out of SourceOff Site (SOS),
then attempted to open it locally with RoboHelp 5 when I got the
error message: "Open project was cancelled or RoboHelp was unable
to load database."
I found the TechNote for this error message (rb_3245) which
said to delete the .xpj and .cpd files, then right-click the HHP
file and click Edit to open the project. This worked fine for
opening the project, however the Primary Layout Source defaulted to
WebHelp. I reset the Primary Layout Source to HTMLHelp which caused
all of the graphics in the project to not display. I fixed this
issue, compiled the Help, and all appeared to be fixed. I checked
the project back into SOS to back it up. This morning, I checked it
out of SOS and tried to open the project locally again, only to get
the same error. I closed the project, undid the check-out, and
asked another writer to check-out the project then open it locally
to see if he got the same error. He did not get the error.
I am not sure what could be wrong on my computer that is
causing this error. I had no problems opening and using this
project until yesterday and I made no file name or path changes to
the project. Any ideas on what may be wrong?Welcome to the forum.

Error messages: Robohelp 9 - RHFrameStyleMappings.apj and .cpd files
I am updating an old Robohelp file to version 9 and I received the following warning messages.
Error in reading RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file
Open project was cancelled or the application was unable to load database for - Custom Casualty.cpdHi there
Depending on how old you are updating from, you may need to take the following step.
If you aren't using Frame, try this. Create a new blank project in a different folder. This should create a new and empty RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file. Then copy the file to your project where it's posting the error.
Now open the upgraded project and see if all is well.

Best Practice for Image placement and Anchored Frames for use in Robohelp 9
Hi,
I'm looking for the best practices in how to layout my images in Framemaker 10 so that they translate correctly to Robohelp 9. I currently have images inside of Anchored frames that "Run into" the right side of my text. I've adjusted the size of the anchored frame so that my text flows correctly around the image. Everything looks good in Framemaker! Yeah! The problem is that when I link my Framemaker document to Robohelp, the text does not flow around my image in the same manner. On a couple of Robohelp screens the image is running into the footer. I'm wondering if I should be using tables in Framemaker in order to get the page layout that I'm looking for. Also, I went back and forth...is this a Framemaker question or is this a Robohelp question. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.I think Jeff is meaning this section of the RoboHelp forums:

Palm Missing Localization Information Display after Mac OS 10.4.6 Update
Recently I installed the Mac OS 10.4.6 update after confirming that it should improve some minor issues with "Hot Synching".
Previously I could "Hot Synch" with my Palm Mac Desk Top software 4.2.1 and also with my PC with no issues. My Palm is using Palm OS 4.5, I believe.
Now I can still can "Hot Sync" on my Mac--with no issues. However, when I take the Palm out of the USB Cradle and try to access the Palm Display page with the featured icons, I get a very unusual error:
"Application can not be launched because it is missing localization info file xxx--enUS.prc."
I checked the Palm site and entered the error message and the response was returned that indicated "several applications with the Palm Tungsten T require overlay files to run properly. "Dialer, SMS, & WAP Browser" require and overlay "prc" file that determines which language the application displays on the device. If this "prc" file is missing, it will cause this message to be displayed."
I was instructed to install the "xxx_enUS.prc" using the Palm Install tool.
I installed all of the "xxx_enUS.prc" files on Disk 2 and have performed a "Hot Sync" again. A successful "Hot Synch" was performed.
The above message is still displayed on the Palm screen even after that successful "Hot Synch".
I can not use any of the screen icons to select any of the features or vprograms on the Palm.
The face buttons can be depressed but the selection from the Palm hand held icons with the stylus can not be accessed as the "missing localization info, ect" is displayed.
I have performed soft resets to no avail.
I still can not get this issues resolved.
Recently I instlled iSynch and the problems still occur.
Anyone out there have any suggestions.
