Locate link browser window in Windows 7 and Outlook 2003

Every time I click on a link in an email in Outlook, a "locate link browser" window appears.  There's a lot of help on the web to fix it for Win XP, but those steps don't appear to work for Windows 7.
Here are some URL's of what I've tried already:
 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/821692
 http://www.slipstick.com/problems/firefox.htm
(Some of these link refer to the DDE options in the advanced settings, but in Windows 7, the Control Panel's "Set Associations" screen doesn't have any advanced options.)
The "locate link browser" window is asking for an exe file...  so, I pointed the "locate link browser" window to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe" and the window isn't coming up anymore, but it just launches IE and my home page...  not the link that was in the email.  I also tried setting the default browser as Firefox (using the Control Panel's "Set Associations")  .  That works fine.  the links from Outlook emails open fine in Firefox, but when I switch the default browser for the HTTP protocol (using the Control Panel's "Set Associations")  back to IE, it goes back to launching IE and my home page and not the link that was in the email.
Any idea on how to resolve this?

My wife has a VAIO desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium and Outlook 2003... and I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Professional and Outlook 2003.  I've never switched my default browser away from IE.  But her computer recently developed the Link
Browser issue and I suspect it occurred when one of our daughters switched association of the default browser to Chrome.  About a week ago, I switched it back to IE.  But the problem has continued.
1) The .htm and .html associations on her computer are set to IE
2) The default browser is back to IE
3) The link in the preview pane of the email message does not work (it brings up Link Browser)
but if you "forward" the message into a message window and then use CTRL+left-click on the same hyperlink, the link works.
There must be secondary association coding that pertains only to the preview pane of Outlook 2003 which gets disrupted by the switch to another default browser... and which does not get reset when you revert to IE.
Does that help someone who can pinpoint the change needed to remove this annoying problem?

  • Locate link browser window using windows 7 outlook 2003

I have been using windows 7 (64bit) along with outlook 2003 with no problem till today. All of a suddden everytime I click to open a link from within an outlook e-mail message  a "locate link browser window opens" I see lots of issues on the internet with Vista or XP but no specific causes or solutions with 7.

    Hi,
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
    1.    Try to set your browser as Default in “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs”:
Change which programs Windows uses by default
    2.    Please also try this:
The Locate Link Browser dialog box appears when you open a Web link in an e-mail message in Outlook 2003
Considering this issue is related to Microsoft Office, if the issue persists, it is recommended that you go to Microsoft Office Forum for further investigation:

  • Installed Windows 8.1 and Outlook 2013 - have to use iCloud Outlook Add-in to sync my Iphone 5 with Outlook - reminders work on iPhone, but reminder window & email reminders don't work in Outlook 2013. Help

Using windows 8.1 and outlook 2013 with iCloud Outlook Add-in so that my iPhone 5 will sync with outlook. Now reminders work on iPhone 5, but don't work in outlook 2013. Help, I've tried everything I can think of or found on the internet.

    Hi,
Please follow the steps below to make sure the reminders have been enabled in Outlook:
On the File tab, click Options.
Select Advanced in the Outlook Options dialog box.
In the Reminders section, select Show reminders.
    Click OK.

As mentioned in the thread, you can try these steps:
Use MFCMAPI to delete the Reminders Folder, then run "outlook.exe /resetfolders" to recreate this folder:
    Download MFCMAPI:http://mfcmapi.codeplex.com/releases/view/118446

  • Cannot connect to Exchange server (Small Business Server 2008) using Windows 8.1 and Outlook 2013

I am at my wits end. I have got a new PC running Windows 8.1 and Outlook 2013 simply WILL NOT connect to my work Exchange server. The REALLY annoying thing is that the Windows Mail client inbuilt to Windows 8.1 works perfectly! But I have to have Outlook
for the functionality. The issue appears to be that in Outlook 2013 on Windows 8.1, it tries to be clever and auto-detect the settings whereas Windows Mail allows you to input the server and domain names.
I have tried all the suggestions already on some of the boards - manual setup, etc - nothing works! Is it a compatibilityissue with SBS 2008 and Outlook 2013? Any help appreciated!

There's no issue with O'2013 connecting with Ex '2007. Also not clear about comments of "auto-detect" versus "....have tried all the suggestions ............ manual setup....". On the one hand your stating that only "auto-detect" is available and on the
other that you've tried "manual settings" (which definitely is an option in O'2013 for EX accounts).
This may have more to do with the fact that you're using a new computer trying to connect to the server which it may not be configured for - something your admin will need to address.
Given that your question is in reference to Exchange - you are likely to get a better/faster answer in the following forum which deals with Exchange server related questions:

  • I purchased a new Windows 8 PC. I have used and continue to use Outlook 2010 for my calendar. With my old Windows 7 PC and Outlook 2010, my calendar sinked properly with my Iphone 5. Now with the new Windows 8 PC, it does not. Help!

I purchased a new Windows 8 PC and I use Outlook 2010 for my calendar. With my old Windows 7 PC and Outlook 2010, my calendar would sync with my Iphone 5, but with the new Windows 8 PC and Outlook 2010, it does not, and I can't figure out how to snyc them. The emails from Outlook 2010 sync, but the calendar does not. Help! Thanks.

Easy solution for restoring lost calendar informaiton, thank goodness.  On your iPhone, go to settings, then to iCloud.  If your Calendar selection is turned off,  turn it on.  Your info should restore.  If your Calendar selection is turned on, then turn it off.  Choose to save calendars when asked.  After it shuts the Calendar off, turn it back on.  Your info should be restored.
Thank you to Apple support for walking me through this.  Shame on you Apple for not just telling people about this easy fix rather than making us go through all of this pain and worry.

  • I get a "locate link browser" message after updating Avast

Firefox is my browser of choice. I recently updated my Avast! antivirus. In the process, it automatically installed Google Chrome. I promptly uninstalled Chrome. Since then, from Outlook 2003, clicking on a link results in a "locate link browser" message and Firefox does not open. In Windows XP, I have gone into folder options, file types and there is no URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol. Neither can I add it because it is not in the drop-down list. I run regedit to try to delete four files called for in various help sites, but none of them are there. What can I do now without setting Internet Explorer as my default browser?

Try to undo and redo Firefox as the default browser.
Make another browser like IE the default browser and then let Firefox do it again.

  • Why when I click on links do I get a message, "Locate Link Browser?"

For some reason, when I try to click on a link in Outlook Express, this window pops up telling me to "Locate Link Browser." From some things I've read, I think that this might have something to do with Firefox, but I'm not sure. I've had Firefox for a while and had no problems. This just started today, completely out of the blue.
One thing I'm wondering is, my task manager had been disabled and last night I downloaded a program to fix it. I don't really think it's connected, but that's the only thing I can think of that has been changed but I only noticed this new problem this afternoon.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Today. I haven't made any changes

I have the same problem and I have followed the steps at [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_local_HTML_file_-_Firefox] to no avail. I have Windows 7 32 bit, Outlook 2003, and Firefox 3.6.6 installed. I even set IE8 to be the default browser and then opened Firefox and answered yest to make it the default browser and still get the "Locate Link Browser" dialog when clicking a link in Outlook 2003.
    Any other suggestions.

  • I need to locate link browser.

After upgrading to Firefox 5.0 I was unable to access the internet. Instead I was getting a message box asking me to Locate Link Browser and provide a file name. I do not know what a link browser is or where to locate it. Can you help please? Thank you.

This can happen when some registry settings get confused between Firefox and Internet Explorer. In that case, it occurs only when you click a link while Firefox is closed; you don't get an error if Firefox was already open. Please try the solution in this article:

  • Acrobat Reader XI and Outlook 2003

After upgrading the Acrobat Reader on our Citrix-Servers with Windows 2003 and Outlook 2003, it is not possible to send pdf from Acrobat Reader via E-Mail. When we select the function to send the document per mail (with the default mail programm), the focus switches to Outlook (when started), but no mail with the pdf-file as attachment is opened.
On a system with Outlook 2007, there are no problems.
Is Acrobat XI not compatible with Outlook 2003 anymore? Is it a problem only in combination with Windows 2003 or Citrix?
Is anybody able to get this to work in a similar environment?
    Thanks for any help.
    Rgds.

This is a known issue with Outlook 2003 and will be fixed in the next patch.

  • Problem for synchronizing calendars between my iPOD 30GB and OUTLOOK 2003

    Hello,
I arrive to synchronize my contacts between my iPOD and OUTLOOK 2003 via iTunes, but not the calendars.
    Thank you for your help

If you have EVER sync'd Outlook 2003 with a PDA then iTunes will throw an error when trying to sync Calendars.
    THE FIX:
    Delete all calendar entries
(an easy way to do this is in Calendar select VIEW > Arrange By > Current View > Events)
Then Delete all entries by highlighting them all right click and select delete!
NOTE: You may have to repeat VIEW > ARRANGE By > Current View > {other categories in list i.e. "Category" and/or "Annual Events" and/or "Recurring Appointments"} To find all the entries that need to be deleted.
Once all of the calendar data is deleted you can re-input the data, but you can never sync it with a PDA otherwise you will develop the original problem again.
WHY DOES THIS WORK? Simply when a PDA syncs with Outlook it places a unique hidden identifer on each entry which screws up iTunes ability to sync with your calendars.
Hope this is clear and helps someone.

  • Browser won't launch when e-mailed hyperlink is "clicked" and a dialogue box appears entitled "Locate Link Browser." It used to just automatically launch Firefox or, if already running, a new tab would open. Any ideas?

My e-mail client is MSOffice Outlook 2003. Until recently I never had any trouble opening a browser window by clicking on the hyperlink within an e-mail message. I contacted MS and was informed that they can only help if I want to use MS IE as my browser. They told me that the problem isn't within Outlook but is instead a configuration problem with Firefox. I can only think that a recent auto-update to Firefox did something unwanted that is causing the problem. Your help/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • ITunes not seeing Windows Address Book or Outlook 2003

When I try to sync my iPhone, it syncs the music, videos, etc, but under the Info tab in iTunes it doesn't show me any options to sync my contacts with, nor bookmarks, nor calendar, etc. I have Outlook 2003 with all the proper iTunes add-ins activated as well as Windows Address Book, but iTunes simply doesn't seem to see that I have these programs installed on my computer and that I can sync my iPhone with them! Anyone else has similar problems?

    Yep,
the first time I got sync probs, I also researched with the root cause is syncing. I tried just everything. It turned out, that address book is just not handling the contacts with all their data entries very well. .MAC, the iPod and the address book itself have all different capabilities to work with the extremly flexible way the contacts are saved. It basicly just works good if you have typed every contact manually into the address book or if they where imported with a very basic set of parameters (e.g. just name and address). Once they are imported from a different software and every contact has a full set of data, Apples address book is overstrained immediatly. And nothing improved thru years. I am starving for a third party application which integrates as good as Apple address book and is working as it is promising to.
When I just started with Mac, the address book probs almost made me resell my first MAC and get back to Linux or whatever.
