Locating actual master files

I store the masters from projects on 6 external HDs, 3 main and 3 backups.
Some files, inadvertendly, now exist only on the backups, not the primaries.
Now I'm trying to get organized and put all files from a given project on one HD.
Aside from going file by file, and using "show in finder," is there any metaview that indicates the PATH to the master (which HD it's located on), rather than which project it's in?
I can select all pics in a given project and move them, but some are "offline." When I isolate all offline pics, I must then go through them individually (it seems) in order to track them down.
At this point I've not found a metadata category that tells me where the path to the physical file. Am I correct that such Aperture doesn't show that information?
Thanks.

Thanks. I guess I could have figured that one out, but somehow that whole interface (manage referenced files) is confusing and un-Mac-like. I hope its re-worked in version 2 to be easier to figure out. But thanks for pointing it out.

  • Renaming Actual Master Files?

In the What's New section it states the following...
Rename actual master files and assign version names within Aperture using the improved File-Renaming tools.<<</div>
As far as I can tell this is only half true.
If you relocate the master files out of the library and tell it to use the new Version name it will rename the file, but inside of Aperture it still uses the original file name (MG0001) as the "File Name". If you consoldate the master files back in they get changed back to the original file name again.
In the batch rename you cannot rename the original file, just the versions.
Unless I'm missing something there is no way to really rename the originals and have Aperture update its internal DB. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a post tied into this same question -
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=668589&tstart=0
"Is the new option to change the master filename only available on import? I can't seem to find a command to do it once images are within Aperture (library or referenced).
I usually import images from an assignment. Edit them and then batch rename so that the client gets a coherently named group of images with no gaps. If the actual renaming of the master filenames is only upon import then it would be less useful since the edit is not done at that point.
Also, when I move select images to the external editor I'd like to retain the same file name not revert to a different file name which is what happens when the version name and the master filename differ. "
As you say, Aperture needs a way to update it's internal DB so that the renamed master file name is used.

  • Aperture loses / switches root location of master files after restart.

Everytime i reboot my imac and open up aperture it sitches the root location of my masteriles to one of the othe drives mounted on the imac

  • Aperture cannot locate master files when upgrading to new OS X Leopard

I have recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. The problem I have encountered is that when trying to locate the master files of my pictures, Aperture cannot because it thinks my files are in my hard drive located in my previous OS X and that the volume is not mounted. I cannot 'Relocate Masters for Projects' or bring my masters back online since it is the hard drive I am currently running Leopard. Does anyone else have this problem and possibly a resolution? Thank you very much.

I had a similar problem, and this how I fixed this.
Select all the files, and either select "Manage Referenced Files" from the File menu or from the contextual menu when you right click the selected files. Use the dialogue that appears to navigate to your master files [make sure that "Show only Files Not Found" is NOT selected] and reconnect your files. If you have files in a number of albums/projects/folders this may take some time.
Quit Aperture, and if a dialogue shows up saying that it is updating previews DON'T SELECT CANCEL. When you re-launch Aperture everything should be fine.

  • Custom Script Code to create multi-Location files from Master File

    Hi,
    I currently have a custom script that loads a master file (which contains all Entities data). I would like to do the following;
    1. Generate multiple files from the master files, one file per location for all locations.
    2. Each location file should contain data only data relevant to that Location defined by Validation Entity definitions.
Does anyone have a sample code to do the above?
Essentially, we want to run this Master Custom Script every hour or so and generate all the Locations' files and have users load them ad-hoc.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

Your requirement is quite sepcific so you will have to write the script for this yourself (or hire someone to do it for you). What I will say is that via vbscript and the FDM API all the components you require to do this are there and it can be scheduled with FDM's Task Manager.

  • How do I change the master files location?

    Hi all,
there is a question that is making me crazy.
I got all my master file inside an external Hd (named 1).
The entire collection of the master file is backed up inside another external Hd (named 2).
The question is: in case Hd 1 get broken, how can I "tell" to Aperture to select the master file inside the Hd 2 (that are right the same)?
    Is there a shortcut?
I hope someone can help me to solve that.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Simone

If I understand, in Aperture you can select different location for different files.
If you want to move only some pictures from the external Hd into another location (for example your Pc Hd), you can select them then choose file/relocate master and select a different location for them.
The suggest is maintain the same folder structure while moving this files.
Aperture is still able to find them.
In case you get confused about the exact location of a pictures, simply right click on the mouse and select "show in the finder".
I hope this is what you asked.

  • Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits?

Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits? Using iMac, OS X, most recent Aperture and Lightroom 5.7 with plugin for Aperture.

    Define "the Aperture files".
    Read this concise guide.
The files you imported into an Aperture Library can be exported (at any time, and repeatedly) using the command "File ▹ Export ▹ Originals".  Your Originals are never altered.  What went in is what comes out.
Adjustments and changes to the metadata that you made since creating an Image in Aperture by importing a file are saved to a text file.  This file is combined, on-the-fly, with the Original to create the Image that you see in Aperture.  There is no file saved to disk that is the full-size Image.  Thumbnails are saved, and Previews are saved.  These are JPG files, almost always smaller than the Original.  They are not substitutes for the Image for the use you have.
When you need a file of an Image to use in another program, you export the Image from Aperture.  "Export" means "Make me a file of this Image according to these file specs I'm providing".  The way to get files of your adjusted Images is simple:  create them by exporting.  Specify "Original size", and use a loss-less image-file format (e.g. TIFF 16-bit) if you want to retain as much visual information as possible.
Search the Web for information about transitioning from Aperture to Lightroom.  Note that I say "transitioning".  You cannot move a database from one format to another without significant changes, and likely some loss of information.  Adobe provides a tool and some instructions.  I strongly recommend working out the process step-by-step, and then proceeding with first a few Images, then a bushel-ful, and stopping to use the first few, the the bushel-ful, before committing your entire collection to the process.
As always, never use any computer file without having a back-up.
We have seen mixed reports here of the success of the LR tool that creates a LR database from your Aperture database.
If you want to carefully define the process, and test and refine it, use the excellent process-development, analysis, and execution program inShort.
Sadly, there is not and can never be a good, thorough re-positioning of the digital assets in your Aperture Library to become digital assets in a LR database.  Just as a metaphor for any user contemplating transitioning to another digital asset manager:  that would be like digging up a house in one country, planting it in a hole in another country, and expecting to be able to use the toilet and the sinks, turn on the lights, cook dinner, and sleep soundly.
    HTH,
    Kirby.

  • I can't delete the master file, which is located on my external HD, through aperture

I import a folder to aperture which is stored on my external HD, and keep the originals on the HD.  If I try to delete a master file with the option, file-delete master image and all versions, the photo deletes from Aperture, but not my hard drive.  I have even tried to delete my trash, but no luck.  Please help, otherwise I do not want to use aperture for file management, which was one of my major reasons for buying it.

After you've deleted a file it from the project it goes into Aperture Trash. When you empty Aperture Trash (Aperture>Empty Aperture Trash) you will get a dialogue box asking "Are you sure you want to permanently delete all items in the Trash?" Under this there is a checkbox giving you the option to "Move referenced files to System Trash". If you check this box it will move the master to the system trash, and from there you can permanently delete the file.
All this is to stop you from accidentally deleting work.

  • Help - Ext HDD Referenced Master Files Gets Connected to Wrong Drive

I just bought Aperture and upgraded to 1.5 and am a new user. Prior to the external/open library, I would not have bought Aperture because I need to access my images on both Macs and PCs.
I spent all day yesterday creating project structure, albums and importing images into Aperture. This morning when I launched Aperture, the referenced masters on external HD were somehow now connected to my Boot Camp WindowsXP partition. When this occurred, I did not have my external drive connected.
Naturally, I connected the external drive and relaunched Aperture but all the images were referenced to my XP partition with directory path that belongs to my external HD (i.e., path is XP/Photo Lib/2006/..., instead of what it should be LACIE/photo Lib/2006/...) I was able to reconnect by selecting one image and reconnecting all function. Easy enough but troublesome.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? Is this a bug on 1.5? Am I doing something wrong - I could not find any setting that would cause this behavior.
I am using MBP so this is bit of a big deal for me....
    Thanks in advance.
Mac OS X (10.4.7)   XP Pro

My comment was too generalized - sorry.
Actually, the version file I was referring to is a version that gets created when an external editor is used. As you know, Aperture can create either TIF or PDS file to be used by an external editor. Once it is saved in the external editor, the preview is updated and the version is stored in Aperture Library. Unless I save the file using "Save As" into a different location manually, the edited file is in Aperture Lib. I will have to export the file into the directory of choice.
If Aperture saved the external edited file into where the master file is located, then Photoshop'd or any other editor modified files can be accessed directly without having to go through the extra steps

  • Master Files Offline??

I am using aperture 3 and OSX 10.7.2 When I got aperture, I imported my iPhoto Library.
I noticed any pictures taken before that time, there is a icon in each picture - which means the Master Files is offline.
When i try to delete those pictures - I get the error - Master Files Offline - Some master files are stored on volumes that are offline: *My Mac
"My Mac" is my internal drive and is online. When I right click one of the photos, click locate referenced file - The path that aperture think it is - is indeed the actual path. So I navigate through the tree and locate the file (same exact path) and click Reconnect or Reconnect All - and then that one photo is now linked and all is well.
The problem is - I am guessing I have at least 1000 if not more photos with this condition. Anyone know how to fix this on a larger scale? Any new photos taken are fine -
THank you anyone who knows this in advance!
My Mac is online .... its like there is some old pointer that is gone so the software thinks its offline - until i relink it

The easiest way to reconnect many masters at once would be to create a smart album that contains only the images that need reconnecting:
File -> New -> Smart Album
    then add a rule:
File status -> Offline (or Missing)
Then select all image in that album and select File -> reconnect master

  • Presenter project's "Master" file is Huge!  Causing slow loading?

I have just finished several presenter projects for a client, and all work fine, except for the loading time of one.
First off: all of them work fine on my computer.  They load quickly and get right to work.  When I upload them to a website (not the final destination, but my own FTP folder), they also work fine.  But one takes a long time to load - about a minute.  This occurs every time I try to view it.  Eventually it starts up and then performs as it is supposed to.
I have re-loaded the files, and have re-created the presentation.  It still loads after about a minute, and that's with my relatively fast DSL speed.
I have examined the insides and discovered this one difference between it and the others:  The "Master" file, located within the data folder in huge at 68,085 kb.  (The actual name of the file is "Master80000000."  All the Master files have a number or number-letter name.)  The other five presentations have Master files of 6kb, 1kb, 1kb, 6kb, and 180kb.
Obviously this Master file has a range of sizes, but why is the one ten thousand times bigger than most of the rest?
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    Hi Jorma,
Thank you for your answer.  I had actually discovered the Master File in this PowerPoint presentation.  It would help to know that I did not create this presentation, nor am I fully experienced in Powerpoint.  I am learning as I go along, though.
So, I discovered the Master Slide had an image as the background, and it seemed to be a large resoultion image.  It also seemed to be fully covered up by the content of every slide.  I think that the creator of this presentation uses this as his master slide and just covers it if he doesn't want it showing.  At any rate, I changed the image to a simple color gradient and saved it.  Saving took several seconds.  When I go back to the slide master, I can see no trace of the image.
However, exporting a new presentation did not result in a master file (in the data folder) that was any smaller.  It was exactly the same, in fact.  I think that Presenter has the content stuck in its memory and wont let go.
Do you know how I might totally re-set the master slide in PPT to make sure the master file in Presenter does not come out so large?  Is there perhaps any other info that is contained in the master file?
I have alleviated the problem by changing my output setting from high quality to medium.  The master file comes out at 2,000 kb.  Still much larger than others, but at least it doesn't take a minute to load.

  • Sync LR Catalog between 2 computers but not master files

I have LR5 on my main iMac desktop system and on my Macbook Air.
The iMac is connected to a disk array which stores my master photo files.
I would like to sync this catalog (iMac master) with the Macbook Air and only be looking at previews on the Air,
so that I can choose selects on the road.
I would come back to the iMac to work with the master files.
Is this possible and easy? I'm not interested in having my files live in a cloud or cloud based sharing or anything like that.
Just Catalog with previews on the Air which sync to Catalog on the iMac.
    Thank you,
    Greg

    1. LR will create the preview and smart preview files alongside your catalog. I think you can change that in setting somewhere, but I believe Adobe says not to. So in my DropBox folder for Lightroom, I have my catalog (.lrcat), Previews.lrdata and Smart Previews.lrdata. But LR manages all that for me, and DropBox does all the synchronizing.
    2. From your computer's perspective, the DropBox folder is just another folder. The synchrozing all happens over the magic of the internet, but once everything is updated, its just local files on your local computer, so the speed and such depends on what drive you put it on.
Re: fast switching. Those previews and catalog files, at least on the Mac, are actually bundles of stuff. So when you make changes in Lightroom, dropbox has to process all that and send the updates back to the cloud. It can take a few minutes for a few changes, or if you import a huge catalog of stuff, that synchronizing can take more time. My point on that was just to make sure that DropBox had finished sending the changes to the cloud from your one computer and that DropBox has updated the changes on your second computer before you open up LR on the second computer and try to make changes. You'll wind up with "conflict" files on DropBox. It's not the end of the world, just a pain, so just make sure DropBox has done it's job before you try to make double edits on the same catalog on two different computers.
That said, if you let DropBox do it's think, you can (and I have) completely processed (keyword, select, and post process/develop) projects entirely using smart previews on my laptop, then just gone back to my desktop to export. The beauty of smart previews is that you can do all of that without having access to the original image files, which for me are only located on my desktop. It's magic.
    3. I'd leave the catalog where it is and either make a new copy of it, or export your stuff to a new catalog in a drop box folder. Worst-case scenario, your existing catalog is still intact. Backups are always your friend. Also, just be aware of the siz of your catalog. I have a working catalog on DropBox for active or recently active projects. That keeps the total file size down because you don't get a ton of space with the free account. Once I'm done with a project, I can export it to a static catalog on my desktop and network drive for archiving. Google Drive gives you more space but I personally don't need to carry my entire catalog around, but something to think about.
Again, LR doesn't know you are using DropBox. It's just a folder locally on your computer.
    Hope that helps!

  • Sample Applescript: scraping values from numbers files into a master file

Hi, I have programming experience in c and other languages, but am new to applescript and so am learning a lot from this forum.
My goal is to make a timesheet system for my Dad (for a bday present) where every time he helps a client, he fills out a newly created numbers file - and after a week or so, he can run a script that scrapes certain values from each numbers file and places it into a master numbers file. Then saving and closing the file.
Vince, it sounds like you've written a script that does this feature of looping through all numbers files in a folder and putting select values from each numbers file into a master numbers file (after clearing the previous values of the master file).
Specifically, I'm looking for a sample script that opens up a numbers file, clears its table, then fills this table by scraping one value from a particular cell in every numbers file in a folder.
If anyone has a similar script they would be willing to post or email to me, for me to use as a foundation and to learn from, I would be very very very grateful. My email is forman.jq at gmail dot com.

I guess that this script may be a good starting point.

  • Can I configure to always delete the master file?

    Hi!
If I want to delete a file, I don't just remove it from the cataloge, but to delete the master file, too.
If I use the remove key, I get the (annoying) pop up, what I want to do: (sorry, I've a german version, so I just try to translate it)
    Delete from hard disk
    Remove (default selected)
    Cancel
Is there any chance to avoid this dialog? Or at least to chance the preselected button, so I've just to use the enter key?
    Actually I've to
    press delete
    press left arrow key
    press enter
That is a little bit annoying and error-prone
    Thanks a lot!
P.S.: I just found out, that ALT+DELETE is a shurtcut to remove the file from the catalog. So it would be greate to have a similar shurtcut to delete the file from the filesystem.

    Thanks!
But it is almost the same as CTRL+ALT+DELETE, which has a special meaning in Windows :-(
So there is no way, to get a delete action, that easiliy deletes, without pressing four keys in parallel? :-|
Perhaps, the developers of Lightroom could provide an option, so you get the pop up, but the default action is different. That would be really great.

  • How can I import Master files from my iPhoto library to my Aperture lib?...

... That is knowing that I have already imported all my iPhoto library but I selected the option "in their current location" from the "store files" pop-up menu.

    There are some tutorials here
