Locating Files *HELP!!!*

I have just bought a new Lacie External Harddrive and i have moved all of my iTunes music files out of my Harddrive and put them in the external harddrive. Now when I go to play music it asks me to locate the files. Is there any way I can save myself the countless days it will take me to lcate all of my 5000 songs.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Dion,
I've just done that here. I moved the /Users/ me /Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ folder that had all the artists onto the external dive and then changed iTunes preferences Advanced, General to tell it where the new location was and it just worked.
So if you just drag the 'iTunes Music' folder across that should do it?

Colin R.

  • Cannot locate files-- HELP PLEASE

    Went to bed last night everything worked fine, get up this morning and try to use Itunes. It says it cannot find the original files for the songs, I went in to where they are suppose to be and nothing. A little over 2500 songs. Any help???
    I didn't move anything, just closed Itunes last night and opened it this morning.

    Sorry to hear about the problem. If you're running Windows as your profile suggests, though, you'll have more luck getting help if you ask in the iTunes for Windows forum rather than here in the iTunes for Mac forum.

  • ITunes Files Lost & Really Cannot Locate, Please Help!

    Hi all
    I have just downloaded the latest iTunes update and the latest IOS sodtware update 8.1 for my iPhone.
    However, I have noticed my iTunes on my laptop has all gone wrong.  The majority of my music has the ' ! ' symbol next to it and the usual 'Cannot Locate File' message.  I have read several forums on here about the dragging of the 'iTunes Library' file to desktop, opening iTunes and then importing a New Playlist but this is only finding the music that I have purchased via the store opposed to the majority of my music that has been installed onto iTunes by copying from CD.
    I am at a loss as to where they have gone or where they would have gone.  Can anyone help?
    Many thanks

    The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
    Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
    If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • Error message "cannot locate file"

    I purchased a new computer and used Detto Intelli Mover to transfer all my music files. When I opened the library, they all appeared to be there, but when I try to plan anything I get an error message "cannot locate file" This happens with all of my 1,200 songs. The error message also says "would you like to look", but I am unable to locate then. Can anyone help with this?

    Have you added all the songs to the library? Just by dragging and dropping?

  • Itunes can't locate files after I listen to it on the Ipod

    It seems that every time I listen to a song, I notice that Itunes can't locate it anymore. When I go to Itunes and look in my music folder, there is an exclamation point next to the song. When I click on it, the error message reads "cannot locate file, would you like to locate it now". At first it was only one or two songs, now it's over 50! These songs are still on my Ipod,just no longer in Itunes. I know how to recover the music b/c it's in my hard drive, I just don't want to sit there and find all these songs all over again. Help please.

    I too have been having the same problem... I am a new ipod owner and same with itunes. And being a new owner and user I got the new itunes. It has done the exclimation point since the first day I got it. But mine is simple to fix. I mearly just exit out of itunes and re-open it. I dont evn have to wait at all. It shows the exclimation point with about 20 of my songs and it hasnt gotten in my way yet. But the main problem that makes me mad is that my ipod is only 2 weeks old but I tried to get some of my friends music and she has the older version of itunes and my ipod ONLY works on the new version. Very frustrating if you ask me.

  • Could not open location 'file:///home/geoff'

    I'm using Gnome and after the last update today ( I always do pacman -Syu everyday and accept whatever it gives me in my noobidity ):(
    Now I find that when I go to Places--Home Folder and Places--Desktop I get this message.
    Could not open location 'file:///home/geoff'  (or 'file:///home/geoff/Desktop')
    There was an error launching the default action command associated with this location
    Have I done something stupid in accepting all updates without question? Or is it something else?
    Can you put me on the right learning curve and fix this.
    Thanks

    I think that the latest udev upgrade has caused the problem. Correct me if I'm wrong.
    I did the same upgrade on my laptop and got the same fault.
    Apart from the faults in my previous message if I open a terminal over any page I'm looking at, like this for instance, it will not stay "above" the page when the box "only on this workspace" is checked. I have to check "always on top" to make it stay so I can cut and paste things.
    When the terminal is minimized in the bottom panel and I click on it, it comes up but the moment I move the mouse pointer to the terminal screen it disappears back to being minimized.
    I've never had this weird behavior before.
    Hoping someone can help

  • Including location file in Attachment of IP_MESSAGE_TYPE to B2B

    Dear Reader,
    I am using SOA suite 10.1.3.4. and B2B 10g configured in Suse.
    I have made a BPEL proces that enqueues messages using an AQ adapter to the B2B database. For this I need to fill in the IP_MESSAGE_TYPE (payload header) that is required by EBxml that is set in the B2B Application. I have set the MSG_ID, FROM_PARTY, TO_PARTY, DOCTYPE_NAME, DOCTYPE_REVISION, ACTION_NAME, MSG_TYPE occording to the configurations done in the B2B application. This works perfectly and the message is picked up by the B2B application.
    During new requirement I need to send an attachment to the B2B application that communicted this to the trading partner (using EBxml). THe moment I fill in the attachment the message produces errors in the B2B Application and I don't know what I am doing wrong. I would like to know if somebody can tell me in steps how I need to fill in the attachment in the payload header. I have tried the following:
    1. Using an assign activity to fill the attachment field in the payload header with the expression: 'file:///home/oracle/b2b/attachments/inbound/example.xml'
    The error 'Unable to create the protocol specific B2B message' arrise in the B2B application.
    2. I have followed the steps in link:
    https://metalink2.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/f?p=130:14:4427741198166476399::::p14_database_id,p14_docid,p14_show_header,p14_show_help,p14_black_frame,p14_font:NOT,754149.1,1,1,1,helvetica
    I have created the xsd AttachmentsDescriptor.xsd in my local bpel process and assign the below XML fragment to the attachment field in the payload header.
    <Attachments xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="AttachmentsDescriptor.xsd" version="1.0" boundary="boundary---">
    <AttachmentPart>
    <Location>file:///home/oracle/b2b/attachments/inbound/example.xml</Location>
    <Content-Type>
    <Top-Level-Type>application</Top-Level-Type>
    <Sub-Type>xml</Sub-Type>
    </Content-Type>
    </AttachmentPart>
    </Attachments>
    This time no error occured everything seem to work, but in the B2B database there is no attachment specified in the wire message.
    I hope somebody can explain me what I am doing wrong and what the steps in BPEL/B2B are to fix my problem.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Anuj,
    Thanks for your reply. I have tested it on the server and it works. I am now busy to make it work with my BPEL proces. I am doing the following:
    1. I am using a file adapter to store the sample.xml file on the configurated directorie specified in "oracle.tip.adapter.b2b.attachments.dir"
    2. I pass the name of the file in this case Sample.xml in the field Attachment of IP_MESSAGE_TYPE (other mandatory fields of IP_MESSAGE_TYPE are filled)
    My question is if I can make it work without step 1 to prevent extra I/O on the server. I would like to fill the Attachment of IP_MESSAGE_TYPE in such a way that I don't need the Sample.xml and that my attachment is picked up directly from the server. I am wondering how I can achieve this (if its possible).
    My last question is if there is any good documentation for B2b 10g how I should configure the environment to prevent connections being kept alive when enqueuing message using AQ adapter.
    Thanks for your time and help so far.

  • PSE 7: "Base directory" for locating files?

    I'm trying to salvage a Photoshop Elements 7 catalog that won't cleanly regenerate thumbtails on the old machine (so it hangs). I tried deleting the cache, but the system crashes the first couple of times regenerating the thumbnails, and eventually seems to "hang" at 50% CPU (sits for hours, seeming doing nothing).  The log file is no help.
    On my new machine, there is no hang, but PSE 7 it is VERY slow to re-locate files, since everything is now at a different location.
    Question: Is there a way to set the "base directory" for where Elements starts its search for files, when the location referenced in the catalog has changed?  Is there another way to update the catalog, when the physical location of files has changed?
    I wanted to backup from the old machine and restore to the new via an external USB disk, but because the old machine "hangs" on the thumbnails, I can't.  At this point, I'm thinking of re-cataloging my thousands of photos...

    That's not how PSE works.
    PSE knows about photos only if you Import the photos into PSE. Then, PSE knows what folder the photo files are in, and they must remain in that directory, unless you use PSE to move them.
    So, if the photos are in different directories on the new computer, you must reconnect the photos to the PSE Organizer. Here are the details on how to do this: http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Quickly_reconnecting_la rge

  • Locating files on an external drive

    My iTunes library is saved on an external drive as it's too big for my laptop's HD. I now also access it from a MacBook at work.
    I've had no problem accessing my library on Mac, but I now can't locate files from my PC. I get an '!' with every file, which I can then locate individually, but iTune doesn't seem to find the entire library in the right drive & folder (I've set the right address in Preferences).
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!
    Charlotte

    I've got the exact same problem after I moved my pictures out of the Aperture library and into a Master folder on the local harddrive, where the pictures are organized into folders by year/month/date.
    All pictures imported after the "switch" are Online and the old ones (about 15000) are Offline.
    In Aperture I select all the photos in my library, go File -> Locate referenced files and a window shows.
    In the upper left half of the window there is a list over the files that are Online and Offline. The thing is that the Offline files have the correct file path, but the volume is set to <null>.
    I have selected a file that is Offline in the upper half of the window, and in the lower half I select the exact file path and push button labelled Reconnect. The selected file now shows in the the category of Online files, as expected. If i push the button labelled Reconnect All, the same thing happens with that one file selected, but not with any of the other offline files. I have also tried to first push Reconnect then followed by Reconnect All, with the same result. I really don't want to repeat this process 15000 more times...
    Is there an other way to update the offline files with the correct Volume information?

    Hello 16to87,
    After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains advice on locating your iTunes library:
    iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

    Create or choose a different iTunes Library file
    If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
    If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
    If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
    You should see one of these screens:
    If you don't see one of the screens above, you may want to try again. Remember to hold down the Option key if you're using a Mac or the Shift key if you're using Windows.

  • Problems w/ iTunes locating files after moving library to external HDD

    My iTunes collection of Music has outgrown my iBook hard unfortunately, so I finally decided to switch all my music to an external hard drive. I followed this tutorial given by iLounge (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/) step by step, and the hope was that it would be a clean transition so I could make space on my laptop, however I ran into a huge glitch. After going into my preferences and changing where the Library was located (from the laptop to Ext. HD), I went ahead and consolidated my library to the Ext HD. That went okay, or so I thought, but when I tried using some of the songs, I noticed the exclamation point meaning it could find the the song. So i went try and find the song on the external hard drive and for reason, when iTunes was consolidating(copying) the music some songs didn't transfer. I've reset location to the default on the laptop HD, but I'm having to go through and manually locate files that iTunes can't "find". Is there an easier way to get the library reload the original location of the files w/o deleting everything and reimporting the whole library? And how would I do a clean transition?

    about the middle of the page they suggest starting iTunes while holding option. then choose "rebuild library"
    This did not work for me. I still get icon for "dead tracks" on most of my music. And when holding the option key you just get to choose the library - not rebuild. I'll look to see if there is another way to rebuild. I did find this on Doug's Apple Scripts site: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/solutions01.php#003
    +• Wait a sec! I didn't delete any files, but I still see "!" next to some tracks. What gives?+
    +Some users report that their files are intact, yet on occasion, some files go AWOL...they still exist, but for some reason iTunes can't see them, and the tracks they represent show the dreaded "!". To discover the facts, you can use List MIA's, mentioned above, which will create a list of these tracks; then you can go hunting for them. To re-associate these tracks, you must click on them; iTunes will ask if you want to locate the missing file, and you weave through an Open/Save dialog for each one.+
    +I have read reports of people having success with 1) Repairing Permissions (see your Mac Help) and 2) ensuring that your files are set to "Open with:" iTunes—you set this in a single respresentative file's Get Info box; be sure to click "Change all". This latter solution worked for me when, mysteriously, iTunes failed to recognize older files I had ripped with SoundJam and MACast in OS 9 back in the last century.+
    +I have often been asked: "But my tracks are right there! Can't you write a script that just looks for the files in the Music folder?" It's not that easy. However I did put together iTunes Track CPR. It uses the existing data from a "dead track" to try and locate its file in the Music folder. It is not perfect (except for play counts, tag data will be rescued), but it does work well under most circumstances.+
    I am going to try the iTunes Track CPR and see if that helps.

  • Locate file window doesn't work

    Ok, this problem occures only on our Z800 workstations.
    Everything works as expected on my laptop.
    When I try to relink a media file, the relink media window opens, and then I click the Locate button.
    The new window ALWAYS opens in the top most level (basically My Computer in windows) and not in the last used directory.
    I think it has something to do with the second problem - the path text box doesn't work. Whatever I enter there and click Return - nothing happens. It doesn't navigate to the folder specified in the path field. The only way to navigate is to go throught the folder tree on the left.
    For every file I have to do it always from the top most level - that is a lot of clicking.
    Also if I uncheck Use Media Browser to locate files, the default windows dialog properly navigates to the last known location of the file.
    I know it's an error - since on my laptop everything works fine. The window opens in the last know location of the media file and I can easily navigate using the path field.
    Any suggestions what could be the reason for this?

    Jim Simon wrote:
    I'm not sure if this is a bug.  The Locate File dialog seems to be opening where it thinks the file might be, rather than where it was.  For example, I renamed the 0000.mts file for a particular project, and when I opened Premiere Pro, Locate File went to the 0000.mts file from another project/folder, thinking that might be it.
    So...if you have no other files that might be the missing file, the dialog starts at the top.
    Jim,
    I understand what you are saying in regard to where it thinks it might be. However if I manually type a path where a file I want to link to rathter then clicking 20 times in the folder tree, it throws a "File not accessible" error. Yet if I use the folder tree to navigate to the same file it sees it and links to it fine.
    It just seems that whenever I try to manually type a path in the path address field is when the error occurs.
    Are you able to manually type in a path > hit enter/return and have it link to the file?
