Locating missing iTune library on Apple TV
I recently bought a new Apple TV and synced it with my iTune, no problem. My nephew came and in my absence fiddled with Apple TV and his computer. Now I can not acess my synced iTune library. I see the Apple TV and it shows available space of 144GB which means my 14GB iTune library is still stored some where in it. How do I access it without having to re-sync?
You'll have to resync I'm afraid.
He's probably synced it to his computer and in the process deleted all your material - it can only sync to one iTunes library, others have to stream. Changing or deleting the sync library erases all content to give a clean slate.
The reported 144GB sounds about right for the usable capacity of the 160GB machines - there are various system software partitions on AppleTV that take some space up you can't use, and the computer software vs hard drive manufacturer definitions of 1GB differ (manufacturers mean 1GB= 1,000,000,000 bytes but OS software tends to use 2^30 bytes.)

Best location for iTunes Library
Just trying to figure out where the best location is to put the iTunes Library to improve streaming to the AppleTV.
I have an AirPort-n that acts as a remote hub for my Tivo, PS3, and now AppleTV (all three are hard-wired to the AirPort-n). Since there’s the ability to connect a USB drive to the AirPort-n, would it make sense to co-locate the iTunes library on a drive connected to the AirPort-n with the wired AppleTV (that is, if it gets the data directly from the Library), or, does the streaming video actually have to flow through (processed by) the host computer (Mac) that ‘owns’ the iTunes Library?

Correct. There must be a copy of iTunes with the library you wish to sync/stream on the host computer, and iTunes must be running for the Apple TV to connect to it (the Apple TV does not pull directly from the library). So from that standpoint, it really doesn't matter where you keep the library, as long as iTunes on the host computer can find it.
I'm sure others will express opinions, but I'm uncomfortable with the reliablity and performance of drives connected to a wireless base station (remember that if your Apple TV is connecting wirelessly, you'd essentially be doubling the wireless bandwidth you use any time the Apple TV syncs or streams), so unless you have a good reason (use with other computers, for instance) to have the drive connected to the Airport base station, you might just want to connect it to your host computer.

What I am trying to do is very simple, and I am sure I have done it before.
I have an Apple TV (2nd Gen) connected to Wifi Network (Airport Extreme 802.11n) I want to stream content from the itunes library on my macbook pro over the wifi network to the Apple TV. This works no problem, home sharing is set up and I can see the itunes library under 'Computer' on the Apple TV interface. I can use the Apple Remote to scroll through and play content from my itunes. Works no problem.
Now I want to use the remote app on my ipad mini to control the apple tv. Using up to date app (Version 3.01) Again, everything looks like it should work. I have turned on Home Sharing on the remote app settings. It works fine and both my itunes library and Apple TV show up on the interface. I can touch the itunes icon and control the itunes on my computer and play music and video on my computer screen.
Now when I touch the apple tv icon I can't see my itunes library content to play on the apple tv. I see the below image. If I tap on the icon in the bottom left it takes me back to the screen in the first image. What is the strangest thing is that I can control the apple tv using the gestures interface! This isn't what I want though and I want to be able to see the itunes library on the screen of the ipad and play it on the apple tv. You can see in the video on this link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvEpgcE9KCs). This is what I am trying to do and I just don't understand why I don't get the screen seen at 1:25 in the video. Instead I get the screen seen in the below image. Any ideas? I know that the remote app is connecting to the apple TV because I can control it using gestures, just strange I can't see the content on the ipad like in the attached video clip, instead I see the screen in the image below. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!OK, Problem solved. Software on Apple TV was VERY outdated. It had been sitting in the box for over a year and needed an update. Problem solved!

How can I locate my iTunes library files? When I click on my iTunes icon rather than my iTunes files I receive, " The file iTunes Library.itl." cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." I have already tried to update my iTunes program.
Had same problem and solved it without having to reinstore any music or movies:
1. Delete old Library file
2. Go to the 'Previous iTunes Libraries' folder and copy one of the earlier files - note, they have a date extension, e.g. 'iTunes Library 2011-11-01'.
3. Paste this file in your iTuners folder and rename file by removing the date extension - 'iTunes Library'
You should have all your music and paylists in tact, unless it was a really old previous file. -

Data usage when streaming from iTunes library to Apple TV?
I'm trying to manage my GB data usage through my ISP and was curious if, while streaming between my iTunes library and Apple TV television shows I have previously downloaded, is that using any data whatsoever? I know I used data to actually download the show initially, but once its just sitting in my library, and I call it up from my Apple TV later and start playing it, is there data usage going on? Thanks!
Home sharing and AirPlay don't use any data, they are done over the local network. It will then depend on the source. If any content in your iTunes library has a cloud icon then it will be streamed, if it resides on your hard drive then there is no internet connection required apart from iTunes purchases (pinging server for verification)

Connect a blank powered external drive to the PC.
Right click on the Disk in the File manager and choose format: exFAT
(if it's a XP machine, first install exFAT from Microsoft and reboot)
navigate to your user account folders on the PC and drag and drop copy (or copy and paste) to the external drive.
(if a program has your files, then export them out first)
Hook up the drive to the Mac, and transfer files to the desktop or to their same appropritate folders.
Import photo's into iPhoto program, import music into iTunes etc and they will manage those files.
You can continue to use the external exFAT drive between Mac's and PC's
Do not format the drive NTFS or FAT, NTFS can't be written too by the Mac and FAT can't hold over 4GB sized files.
If you format exFAT on the Mac, it likely won't work correctly on the PC.
"Migration" type programs are a utter waste of time and effort between PC's and Mac's for the fact that only certain files (and no programs or anything else) will work between them, also it's a hassle and takes too long. So don't even bother with it. -
I am playing TV show from itunes library via Apple TV on my HDTV. However, It is trasnmitting only video signal & no Audio. I have checked in my itunes, & have ensured "Apple TV" has been choosen in the bottom for streaming.
I have connected APPLE TV to my HDTV via HDMI cable.
Itunes is installed in my laptop.
I access itunes library on APPLE TV Menu & Try to watch the TV show that is downloaded.
But it is only streaming Video & no Audio in that.
Can any one help me here.!!!3G is too slow. wifi is faster.
Or am I just being too impatient and eager to watch my show?

Accessing iTune Library with Apple TV?
have been successfully acessing my iTunes library on Apple TV. I recently added music from a recent CD purchase, and it does not show up when I use Apple TV. iTunes Match is on, as well as iTunes Home Sharing. When I update iTune Match I get a message saying "2126 songs are available in the iCloud," but there are 2130 songs on the MacBook Air.
I also have downloaded a software update on the Apple TV, but this does not help...Maybe four are ineligible or have not uploaded?

I've done all of the above but I'm still displaying the message: to access your iTunes library on Apple TV, turn on home sharing in iTunes on your computer using ....... My home sharing is on ???? Confused, I've restarted and reset Apple TV with no change

Finally achieved my fix by changing channels on my Billlion router to 11, and not letting the ATV sleep. Give it a try, I spent a good four frustrating weeks until I did this.

I have recently bought my self
- Mac Mini
- Time Capsule
- Apple TV
My objective is to be able to run the mac mini as a media center for the living room television and the apple tv to have access to the movies in a different room.
The point of the time capsule is to serve as an external disk for Itunes + as a backup
My problem is 2 things:
- I want Itunes to use the timecapsule as the data source as it has more space. This works fine, but every time I restart the mac mini itunes defaults back to the original itunes library!
- When in the middle of sourcing a movie on Apple Tv I can suddenly be in situation that the itunes library no longer is availalbe. I believe the problem might be that TC or Mini hibernates and that Apple Tv no longer can get access

I use itunes on my Ipad 1 and on my ibm computer with windows xp. I have just acquired an Apple TV. The literature tells me I can access my ibm computer's itunes library on my Apple TV by using home sharing but it just doesn't seem to work. I have an Ipad add a friend gave me called "remote" which is supposed to do the job. When click on "Add an Itunes library on this device it tells me to "open Itunes on your computer and select "Steve's Ipad" from the device list. But my Itunes 10.5 has no device list nor does it contain a "Steve's Ipad" to select. Any help will be most welcome.
You cannot. You will need to update your computer to OSX 10.5 at least so you can run a newer iTunes version.
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..." Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present). -
Error when trying to move location of iTunes Library to external HD (tried obvious solutions)
Okay, I got a new Western Digital 500GB external hard drive and wish to move the location of my iTunes library to it to free up space on my hard drive (ONLY 4 GB FREE -- PLEASE HELP)

When I first got it, I followed the steps in the online tutorials to change the location.
iTunes > Prefs > Advanced >
Create new folder named "iTunes Library" and select it as default
Would you like to keep iTunes folder organized? I have read and read on what to do hear, and people only state that it asks that because I have that option checked in preferences, but they DON'T say whether to select 'Yes' or 'No'. I have tried both to no avail.
File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files
The VERY FIRST time I tried this, it was working. I did not realize that the external hard drive was not plugged in all the way, so when I shifted the computer, it came unplugged and stop the transfer. It was when I rebooted, plugged it in, and tried a SECOND time that it started giving me the error:
"Copying files failed because you don't have permission to change your iTunes media folder or a folder within it."
Here are the solutions I read and the forums and already tried:
1) Run and repair disk permissions, restart, try again... DIDN'T WORK
2) Find iTunes folder, right click, change permissions to Read and Write (was already set to that) DIDN'T WORK. And it doesn't give me an option to 'include all folders within'
3) Set back iTunes with time machine... DIDN'T WORK
Please help.. I don't know what else to try. It seems like it should be such a simple fix, and I can't put anything else on my hard drive until I fix it (no, I have nothing else to delete--all pictures I need to go through as I am an amateur photographer). No excess apps other than what came on the comp except Photoshop and Microsoft Office.I can copy the iTunes folders over to both drives manually but then iTunes does not see the files.) Hold Option, launch iTunes, select *Choose library* then select the iTunes library folder you coped to the external.
