  • Photoshop CS5: how many files can be opened at once?

I've just tried to open about 400 jpg's in Photoshop CS5, as I needed to crop them to the best ratio for display on my iPod Touch, and I got an error message saying I'd tried to open too many images at once, and it stopped at about 200.
My system is a Win7 Pro 64Bit, 3.4GHz i7 machine, with 16GB RAM, and I thought actions like this were driven by the amount of system resource available, but Photoshop seems to have an internal limit, regardless of the resources.
Has anyone else come across this apparent limit, and is there a way 'round it?
    Thanks
    Paul

In that case if a center crop will do you can download my crafting actions package. It contains a plug-in script that I wrote based on Adobe plug-in script Fit Image its name is AspectRatioSelection you can record using it in an action set its dialog to have it set a new selection that is a rectangle with a aspect ratio 3 2 that is centered and not feathered.  This script will select a 3;2 center selection for lanscape images and a 2:3 selection for Portrait images.  When the action is played the diaqlog will not show for the plug-in will record the settings you used when you recorded the action into the actions step.  These setting will be passed to the script when the action is played and the script will not display its dialog unless you turn on the dialog in the action step.  Once this setp is recorded follow it with a Image Crop step.  Once you have recorded this two setp action you can run the Image processor set its dialog to run this action and heve it save and resize the crop to fit 1920x1920 or you could include a Fit Image step in the action after the Image crop step and set the Fit Image dialog  width and height to 1920. You will find Fit image and AspectRatioSelection under menu File>Automate>...... You will also find Imahe Processor Pro there if you download it from Russell Browns web site.
If a center crop will not do for you add an additional step to the action to make it interactive by adding an interactive transform selection after the aspectratioselection step.  The step need to be recorded with a 180 degree rotation and  have its dialog turned on and you will need to hold the shift or shift+alt keys down and use a cornor point as you transform the 3:2 selection to constrain the selection to have the same 3:2 aspect ratio.

  • Photoshop CS5 Materials- downloaded, but not showing in Repousse

When working in Repousse, the Material selection is small.  If you go to 3D>Browse 3D Content Online, it takes you to a Photoshop.com page where you can download new materials.  I downloaded the materials and installed into my CS5 Presets>Materials folder.  When I reopen Photoshop CS5, not seeing new materials.  Using the 64 bit version, I tried the Plugin folder also.  They are .p3m files and one material extension file, see pict below.  I am interested in the glass and metal materials.
    Suggestions?

    ANSWERED-
Nevermind, found them.  Its a small arrow on my LARGE wide screen monitor.  Click arrow, can change materials!!

  • Frame7.1 wont import Photoshop CS5.1 .jpg file

I am (reluctantly) in the process of migrating from Windows XP +
    Photoshop CS V8.0 to Windows 7/64bit + Photoshop CS5.1.
Framemaker 7.1 works well in both XP and W7/64, including generating
PDFs. I can import .jpg files written by Photoshop CS. Etc.
    ... except...
If I open a known-good (already imported) .jpg file using Photoshop
CS5.1 and, without making any changes, save it, Framemaker can no
longer import it, neither directly or by reference:
"The filter encountered an error and could not complete the
        translation".
It appears the Photoshop CS5.1 writes a different .jpg file format
than Photoshop CS (rhetorical: how can it be acceptable for CS5.1 to
change the format of a basic .jpg file? but I digress...).
Examining the original .jpg file vs. the CS5 .jpg file I find:
    - The new file is smaller (79KB vs. 82KB) - note both are small!
    - The contents (examined using a binary editor) are quite different.
    - Both versions display identically, in both CS and CS5.1 and in
       various viewers.
I have tried various experiments trying to understand this and have
had no luck. I can open the CS5 .jpg file in Photoshop CS and save it
again but Framemaker will not open this version either, same error.
This is not a RAM size issue (8GB), swap space issue, or anything else
related to the computer hardware. All SW updates are current, etc.
I have tried importing into a new, default template file, etc.
So, I tried saving as .bmp and the first time I tried to import it
Framemaker died immediately: no stack trace, no error messages, the
Frame process was just gone. After restarting, the 2nd attempt I got a
black rectangle of the correct size, but all black = not usable.
Photoshop CS + Framemaker has worked well for many years, so I know
    this is a CS5 issue.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make CS5.1 generate a "standard" .jpg
    file?
Anyone have any ideas on how to import CS5.1 images using
    Framemaker 7.1?
Please don't advocate upgrading Framemaker to V10... Adobe provides zero
information on migration (from any version) and the last time we did
this cost us many man-months of work to "fix" 14K+ pages in 50+
manuals. We will stay with XP/CS and "eat" the new W7/CS5 system
    before we move to FM10.
    Thanks
    Previously (everything works)
      Windows XP/SP3
      Photoshop CS V8.0
      Framemaker 7.1P116, non-structured
    Today:
      Windows 7/64bit SP1
      Photoshop CS5.1
      Framemaker 7.1P116, non-structured

AG: IIRC, the FM7.1 JPG filter only reads the older JFIF header format JPG files, while the CS5 Photoshop and many other applications write EXIF headers in the JPG (yes , the standard evolved).
We also had a problem with JPEG 5 (legacy) vs. JPEG 2000 (newer) encoding, not in FM, but in the rendered PDFs at our print shop. The Xerox engine needed an update to fix that.
Using JPEGs in FM has various considerations, some already mentioned in this thread. But the biggest concern, in my view, is cascading compression damage. JPEG compression is always "lossy", and the artifacts at higher compression, or after successive compressions, are often visually distracting (and may be aggravated if sharpening is also applied). Even at NO compression, there are losses due to the transforms
Unless you are shooting .RAW, your camera is compressing from frame buffer to JPEG. When you re-save from your photo editor, regardless of edits, it gets re-compressed if saved to JPEG. When you render to PDF, it may get both down-samped and re-compressed again depending on PDF settings. If you post-process (optimize or reduce file size) in Acrobat, it can get down-sampled and re-compressed again.
So I shoot JPEG with as little compression as possible (RAW has other considerations). I edit in PhotoShop and save as EPS, which is a very inefficient format space-wise, but is UNcompressed*, and is a very efficient format both performance- and stability-wise in FM. I save the EPS at the resolution desired in the PDF (usually 200 dpi). Yes, it does get (and needs to be) re-compressed during Distill, but we've skipped one needless re-comp, and avoided another down-sample. We don't further optimize in Acrobat post because the images are already optimal.
EPS also supports both RGB and CMYK models, whereas JPEG is strictly RGB (or, beware: indexed color). And EPS is generally unmolested by Mr.Bill's GDI, which is crucial for color-managed CMYK.
    * TIFF can also be uncompressed, and CMYK, but can be a performance issue in FM.
The Wiki page for JPEG, btw, is presently vandalized:
"The name "JPEG" stands for Joint Photosaic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the JPEG standard and also other standards. It was discovered by <likely name of vandal redacted> of the Philippines."

  • [Photoshop CS5] Optimize to File Size working not correctly.

    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Optimize to File Size working not correctly.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Open any photo.
    2. Draw a slice
    3. Save For Web, choose Optimize to File Size, type 10KB (Current Slice).
    4. Save "selected slices" only
Results: File result larger than expect (over 10KB)
    Expected results: <=10KB filesize.
I uninstalled whole Adobe CS5 Master Collection (Trial) & tried to reproduce the bug in Photoshop CS4, but it was not happened, it's ok on CS4.
Finally, Windows 7 is not reason, it's a bug of Photoshop CS5. Please fix, I don't want to buy a bugged software.
I really need the feature "Optimize to File Size" in my works.
P.S: I tested on 4 PCs, and the results is the same.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 preference file deleted problem

    Hello
I hope soemone can help out here, i'm quite stuck!
I'm running OS 10.8.5 using PS CS5.1. My mac was left on overnight (not sure how relevant that is) and when opening up PS this morning it crashed with the message 'end of file encountered' 'preferences file is invalid/has been deleted'
I've read up on a few older posts about the same thing. I uninstalled/reinstalled from disk but the same thing happens.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Matt

Please hold down Shift+Option+Command keys as Photoshop is launched.
Incase this does not work, please delete the corrupt preference file:
    Go to your home folder.
Go to your User Library folder.( OR Hit Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder > Go > Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library)
    Go to the Preferences folder.
Delete the “Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings” (or similar name) folder.(Folder name may differ depending on what version you have)

  • Photoshop Cs5 not opening files

I'm not actually completely sure if this is an issue with Mavericks because the problem started about 2 1/2 weeks ago, but my Photoshop Cs5 won't open files anymore. As soon as the app launches, I can click on "open..." but as I'm selecting the file, the window will close and after that, every choice on all the drop-down menus is grayed out and can no longer be selected. I've already installed Java for OS X 2012-006 with no luck, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS Cs5 with no luck. Help pleaseeeeeee D:

    Reset your Photoshop preferences: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
Uninstalling and reinstalling WON'T do that unless you used the CS Cleaner from Adobe to uninstall.
    Also, check your Performance preferences:
Toggle OpenGL drawing, quitting Photoshop between changes.

  • Any experience with 11.6 4GB, 1.6GHz + Photoshop CS5 and large files?

I've been debating the 11.6" 1.6GHz / 4GB model since the announcement. I have yet to have had a chance to play with one that had Photoshop CS5 installed. Anyone have experience opening PSD files in excess of 40MB?
I'm debating adding the little Air to my collection which already includes a i7 MBP with 8GB of RAM. I'm really just interested in whether or not I can use the Air for down time work while traveling.

Did you ever get an answer to this or take the plunge? I'm curious what you found out...

  • Can Photoshop CS5.1 open files created/saved in CS6?

I work in a collaborative environment. I've upgraded to CS6, but those i work with are working in photoshop cs5.1. Will they have problems opening files i create or save in CS6?

I don't know that I can offer a better long answer, nor do I know of any published list of things you can save in a Photoshop CS6 document that won't open properly in an earlier version.  I have tried a few things myself, like creating shapes, text, etc. and found that Photoshop CS5 sees them all just fine.  But it's not hard to think of things that wouldn't work, such as putting a brand new filter as a smart filter in a document.
Just using the cool new features would not necessarily net you incompatibility.  For example, doing a Content Aware Move or one of the new blurs just manipulate pixels, and at the end of the day the layer will just have pixels on it, which every version of Photoshop has known about all along.
Things like recording brush strokes in an action and trying to run the action on an earlier Photoshop would yield incompatibility, because older versions wouldn't know how to play such brush strokes back.
There is a "Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility" setting in the File Handling preferences, and the implication is that others will always be at the very least able to open a flattened version of the document, but I'm not sure that covers every case of individual incompatibility between recent versions of Photoshop.  I've never had occasion to test it out thoroughly.
Maybe one of the Adobe people can speak to this in more detail.
Do you still have a copy of Photoshop CS5 installed?  If so, and you're not sure about whether your PSD file is going to be compatible, you could of course try it yourself to be sure.

  • Photoshop CS5 UI - Minor File Menu Timing Irritation

    Photoshop CS5 on Windows 7:
I've noticed that for a brief period after starting Photoshop the main menus become clickable, but most or all of the submenus are grayed out (disabled).  For example:
    1.  Start Photoshop.
    2.  As soon as you see the UI, click File then try to click Open, which is grayed-out (disabled).  Nothing happens.
    3.  This condition persists until you click somewhere else and open the File menu again.  This is mildly frustrating.  One's thought flow comes to an abrupt halt until one realizes that it's never going to enable itself.
May I suggest that the main menu simply not be made available until whatever initialization that makes all the submenus go from disabled to enabled completes...  Delay the menu opening until the submenu items are actually useful.
As a possibly better alternative, enable the submenus while the menu is open, if that's possible.  Then one would simply have to wait a moment at step 2 before clicking on a freshly enabled menu.
    Thanks.
    -Noel

Okay, the problem goes away when I move all my add-on plugins out of Photoshop's folders.  That's a hopeful sign; it says that a plugin is causing it.  As usual, you were right on the money, Chris.
Fortunately I don't have all that many plugins, so I've added them back one at a time to see what one does it...
Culprit:  OnOne Genuine Fractals 32 bit (the 64 bit version doesn't seem to give the same heartburn to the Photoshop 64 bit executable).
Specific file:  A DLL they include in the Plug-ins\Genuine Fractals 6.0.plugin subfolder, GFStandardMenu.onli.dll, seems to be responsible for this behavior (not surprisingly, it has the word "Menu" in its name).  Unfortunately the plugin will not run without this DLL.
So it looks as though I'm stuck with this behavior for now, unless/until I can get the OnOne people to fix it.  Off to do that...
It's Genuine Fractals Standard 6.0.5 by the way.  I haven't tested with their Professional Edition variant, though I have it.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 download

I have a subscription to Photoshop CS5.1  - I had to deactivate it and to download onto another pc.  However I cannot find any link to download it from.  Can anyone help please?
The deactivation was done on the advice of an adobe chat representative who further advised that I would get an answer to my problem here.  When I tried a download the adobe site informed me that they no longer supported the platform that I was using (Vista).  As version CS5.1 was originally purchased on this platform it would not be unreasonable to assume that the reinstallation would be required on the same platform.  I don't seem to be able to get any kind of meaningful response from anyone about this.  There must be a solution somewhere....

I think if you download photoshop 5.1 from here it should work hopefully:
(just read and follow the directions or the links won't work)
