Location Bar Search

Im using Win7 and FF4...when I enter an address such as Amazon..instead of completing the address it takes me to a search page with results from my internet provider instead of google. I checked keyword.url and the other one in about:config..ts set to false(shouldnt get anything) and google is listed in the other. I see no reference to zoominternet.net in the about:config file..how do I stop this or correct this..thanks

They are re-directing those "lucky" searches. Contact wowway and ask them how to '''opt-out''' of that "service".
I've had that same issue with Comcast for the last year and half. I use their "out-out" page and 6 to 8 weeks later I have to do it all over again.

• Single-word location bar searches are slow

I constantly use my location bar to perform google searches, and have noticed that when my search is only for one word, the search results are not displayed for about ten seconds. This does not happen if more than one word is entered. For example, search results for 'mozilla firefox' would appear almost instantly, but searches for 'mozilla' or 'firefox' individually would experience this delay before the results page is displayed.
Is there any way to modify this behaviour so that the search will be performed just as quickly in the case of a single word? Is this default behaviour? My keyword.url preference in about:config is set to http://www.google.com/search?q=

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

• How to set location bar search independently from search bar selected engine?

With FF 23 searching in the location bar performs a search with the currently selected engine in the search bar. I find the behaviour annoying, as I sometimes select different engines in the search bar if needed, but most often I just need quick google searches that I perform from the location bar wihout need to change the search engine.
Is there a way to customise the behaviour, so that the search in the location bar points always to one engine, independently from the engine that is selected in the search bar?

hello tadolo, you'd have to use an addon like https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/keyword-search/ to get back the old behaviour.

• Location bar search/keyword feature doesn't work the same as 3.x

In 3.x I could type anything in the location bar and it would "resolve" it. I could type "google maps" and it would go to maps.google.com, "yahoo mail" and it would go to mail.yahoo.com. And if it couldn't figure it out then it would do a google search.
Now, in 4, if I type the same things I get "This URL is not valid and can't be loaded." I tried to disable the fixup feature to see if that was interfering but that didn't help. I liked it the old way when I just typed what I was thinking and it would take me where I wanted to go. I've verified this many times as I still have 3 at home and 4 at work.
I also hate that the refresh button moved.

I have this same issue- I have tried changing it the way you say to, but every time I close the browser it resets and I have to change it every time I search- I should be able to type in "target" and be taken to target.com- it says that this works, but all it does is search for target and it won't even do that unless I change the settings every time I open the browser- I never had any problems with 3.5 or 6 and I am going to uninstall 4.0 and go back- it doesn't work like an updated browser should- it is worse!

• Problem with location bar search

Before upgrading to Firefox4, when I'd type something in the box, Firefox would try to direct me to the location I'd intended. But now with Firefox4, it doesn't happen anymore, and instead, it shows a search result by Babylon Search. what can I do to fix it? I have already tried "keyword.enabled", but it didn't help.

Hi~ thank you for sharing this information. I followed your instructions and it did work. However, my "keyword.url" settings always automatically change back to another search engine website other than google once I restart my firefox. How should save my settings? else I would have to repeat this procedure every time I use firefox...

• FF3.x: Trying to deploy via Citrix w/o Location Bar & Search Bar (kiosk mode)

Is is a userpref that would allow me to disable the search and address bars?

Bump. No reply after typing all that all day?

• Bookmark search in location bar does not produce proper results

(note: I have hundreds of bookmarks) I search the word "idea" in the location bark (with prefs set as searching for Bookmarks) and only SOME of the bookmarks with "idea" in the name come up. I type "ideas" and they all disappear, even though there IS one with the word "ideas". This happens even in Safe Mode.

Does it happen in new profile? Make is as described at [[Managing profiles]] ; import the bookmarks into the new profile via the import/export to HTML feature in bookmarks - organize bookmarks window; change the Location bar search setting; check for the issue.

• Location Bar not automatically going to pages

I like Firefox 4, but a very important feature that I loved that was only even in Firefox was not to be found in 4.0 but it was in 3.
Firefox would automatically redirect me to pages that would often appear first in Google when I typed them in the location bar. For example, if I typed ps blog it would b=me to the PlayStation blog, if I typed gmail, it'd bring right to Gmail, ect. But not it's just searching for what I type. When I type gmail it will just bring up a google search of gmail.
I tried to see if changing some options in about:config but nothing worked so I reset what I changed.
Please help! I'm debating whether to go back to v. 3.6.16!

The change between Firefox 3.6.* and Firefox 4 is how location bar search works. In Firefox 3.6 it uses Google "Browse by name" search. With the browse by name search, it performs a Google search and if there is a clear match it will take you to the site, otherwise it shows the Google search result. With Firefox 4 it just performs a Google search if you type something which is not recognised as a URL.
To get the Firefox 3.6 behaviour on Firefox 4 you need to change a hidden preference.
# Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
# Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
# Locate the preference '''keyword.URL''', double-click on it and change its value to the link shown below

If you prefer, you can also do this by installing the Browse by Name extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/browse-by-name

• Location Bar Issue

In Firefox 3.6 when I would type the name of a webpage such as CNN, Youtube, or Yahoo into the Location Bar it would automatically take me to that website. Today I decided to give Firefox 4 RC1 a try a few days before the official release, and without changing any of my other settings, now when I enter in CNN without the .com after it, I go to the Google search page for CNN instead of the CNN website.
I have checked in about:config and browser.fixup.alternate.enabled is set to true.

• When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. How can I resolve this?

Question
When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. When I swap to private browsing firefox allows me to anter the website address directly into the location bar - but this is a slow [prcess to swap back and forth - also by dint of using private browsing I loose my website information.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• I've edited the Keyword URL so it shouldn't be Google doing autocomplete in the Location Bar but it still is. How do I stop Google dominating my searches?

At first when I made the change it did go to the alternative search engine that I had under Keyword URL & it is still set as that (I've checked) yet when I type in website such as wikipedia & hit return its found & brought to me by Google. Note this is a location bar not search box issue.

• Firefox 4 does not search from Location Bar (Awesome Bar)

I have searched the knowledge base, and not found anything exactly like my problem. A similar question, '''[https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/815325 Url Keyword guessing does not work]''' is close... but only close. Link below.
I was previously able to type some keywords into the Location (Awesome) Bar, and it would either jump to an appropriate page, or come up with a Google Search page of possible sites.
I have upgraded to FF4, and while I can successfully conduct searches from the dedicated Search Bar, typing keywords into the Location Bar brings this problem. I have used "Mozilla Foundation" as my search keys:
'''Firefox can't find the file at jar:file:///C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/omni.jar!/chrome/en-US/locale/browser-region/region.propertiesmozilla+foundation.'''
The portion '''file:///C:/Program''' appears blue as if it is a link, but clicking on it, nothing happens. I have attempted multiple search keys, and nothing changes.
I have attempted to use the about:config | keyword.enabled to turn it off, then back on, and it doesn't seem to have worked. I really can't decipher anything about the message that I do get (above). This may or may not matter, but I was surprised to find that my existing Add-On, "Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.2.1" is no longer compatible, and thus not functioning.
Thank you very much for helping.

You can modify the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page to use Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" or Google's "Browse By Name".
* Google "I'm Feeling Lucky": http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=
* Google "Browse by Name": http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=

• Why does the location bar only perform searches, even typing about:config just returns a google search for "about:config"

My location bar will only perform web searches and no longer takes the browser directly to web address entered manually. for example typing "about:config" returns the results of a google search for "about:config", typing "http://www.gawker.com" does not take me to gawkers website but rather returns google search results for "http://www.gawker.com".

''You might want to disable or remove that Yahoo! activeX Plug-in Bridge that shows in your Installed Plugins. Firefox doesn't do ActiveX and a plugin like that might leave you open to being exploited.''
First you need to figure out if an extension you have installed is causing that.
Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
If not, see this:
Or, it could be caused by Malware.
Install, update, and run these programs in this order. '''''(Not all programs detect the same Malware.)''''' They are all free for personal use, but some have limited functionality in the "free mode" - but those are features you really don't need to find and remove the problem that you have.
''Note: If your Malware infection is bad enough and you are mis-directed to URL's other than what is posted, you may have to use a different PC to download these programs and use a USB stick to transfer them to the afflicted PC.''

Or maybe your ISP is doing the redirect, but that is doubtful since you're getting two different redirect addresses (unless you are using two different ISP's).

• Why can't I search in the location bar anymore?

I don't mind the changes made to Firefox too terribly but the one thing that's really throwing me off is that I can't search Google from the location bar anymore! Previously, when I wanted to know something stupid like how tall the Eiffel Tower is, I just popped 'how tall is the eiffel tower' into my location bar and bam, instant answers. Now, if put anything with spaces I get:
"The URL is not valid and can't be loaded."
I already went to about:config and keyword.enabled is set to true. What could the problem be? :(
