Location of ARD client software

I upgraded the client to ARD3 on several ARD2 admin computers. Now Remote Desktop 2 won't open on these ARD2 admin computers. In order to still be able to use ARD2 on these ARD2 admin computers (until we get to purchase more licenses to update all of our ARD2 admin computers), I think I need to remove the ARD3 client and install back the ARD2 client. What is the location of the client? What other files, if any, do I need to remove before installing the ARD2 client back on the ARD2 admin computers?

Use the instructions here to remove the ARD 3 client. Then you can download the 2.2 client here; it says update, but it will install from scratch.

  • ARD client software too old, update fails - ARD client up to date

I am trying to access a friend's macbook using ARD 3.3. I can find the machine's IP over the internet but cannot access it. Under the info pane it says the the client software on the remote machine is too old, so I created an installer package to get her the right version, I also send her the link to apple's download site to download the latest version. On trying to install either of the packages she prompted with the message that the client software was already up-to-date.
In Apple help I found out that the remote machine needs to be configured to allow remote access, which can be done under System preferences/Sharing/Apple Remote Desktop. I guided her to that location but she said that this pane does not exist. Nor did she ever install ADR client on her computer, which makes me wonder about why the ADR client installer stated that the ADR client software was already running.
Any ideas about what is going on here?

I couldn't find the appropriate forum to post this, hence the double posting (soon to be triple). I'll close down the other two. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • Downgrade ARD client software from 3.4 to 2.2?

    Hi,
I'm running Apple Remote Desktop 2.2, however the Mac Pros (running 10.5.8) which I want to control have ARD Client 3.4 installed.
Is there any way to downgrade the client software so I can use ARD 2.2?
At the moment, when I try to, for example, send a message using ARD 2.2 to a Mac Pro running ARD Client 3.4 I get an error message reading:
"Failed on all. Status: Newer Client software (3.4)"
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

ARD 2.2 is not supported on Leopard nor on Intel-based Macs. At least one user (raus), though, posted here that he got ARD 2.2 to work in Leopard, but there are no guarantees. From the finder, navigate to:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteMangement
From the folder, delete (or move) the ARDAgent v3.X file. Reinstall the 2.2 update for ARD on the Apple site. (This may be optional; the original poster just reinstalled the update to be safe.) You can reportedly now run Remote Desktop 2.2 in 10.5. This works for PowerPC and Intel Mac.
Note, though, that this is completely unsupported by Apple and may or may not work, or may cause issues. For proper support for Leopard, you need ARD 3.2 or later. Your best option is to upgrade your administration system to ARD 3.4, which is available through the Mac App Store for only $79.99 for the unlimited-client version.
    Good luck.

  • Remote desktop client software not active

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm a bit bewildered by this errormessage (and I couldn't get a hit when I searched for it) when I try to drag a file from the xserv to the macbook pro desktop, remote desktop client software not active.
The macbook has the ard server and connects to the xserv ppc. It connects over the internet.
The xserv is behind a iptables fw and I have forwarded 3283 tcp/udp plus 5900 udp/tcp to the server. Have I forgotten a port ?
    I've read through http://www.starkpr.com/ard.htm as well as http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070302234400232&query=vnc%2Bsimpl e%2Bset%2Bup
and tried to find out more from the discsussions here.
The macbook pro sits behind an airport which is hooked into the dsl modem. Do I need to configure port forward in the airport as well.
Connecting to the xserv and working on it works great but the copy file transfer fails.

Hi there I took new try at this and this is what finally solved it for me.
The earlier answer I got was very good advise but I had already done that bit, actually I might have overdone it a bit I had checked all the boxes under the useraccount on sharing.
    Back to business.
Firewalling. I realised I need to open and portforward at both locations and remeber it's booth tcp and udp.
So at the xserve location I needed to forward 3283 and 5900 both tcp and udp from outside to the IPnumber of the xserve.
At home with my macbook I needed to do the same.
However this did not solve it, I had forgotten one software on the macbook. On the xserve I had installed ARD upgraded it to 3.1 AND installed the upgrade for ARD 3.1 client. The client part I had forgotten at home. So once my ARD and ARD client software matched I could connect to the xserve and drag and drop files booth ways.
ARD wasn't running on the xserve I just had it installed along with the client software.
So portforwarding in firewalls and the same software and versions in all locations seems to have solved it for me.
A small note enabling/disabling the firewall in macbookpro did nothing for me since when enabled ARD rules were in place and active so it still worked.
I hope I made some sense.

  • Remote Desktop repeatedly installs ARD Client for standard users...

ARD 3.2 running on OS 10.5.4 on MacBook Core2Duos...
These are machines imaged from an asr disk image...
    No issues with admin users...
Every time Remote Desktop is launched by a standard user, a admin user name / password is required and the Apple Remote Desktop Clint is reinstalled. After, ARD runs normally until it is quit and relaunched, even without a user logout...
Making the standard user an admin user resolves the issue. The issue returns when the admin right are removed from the user...
Have run permission repairs, removed and reinstalled Remote Desktop, manually checked permissions, etc...
It appears that from the standard user perspective, the ARD Client software needs to be updated. ...
Any ideas out there? I have to deploy these machines NOW and I am running out of ideas on this...
    Thank you! Les

    Dave,
Thank you for the ideas. While you are pretty much correct in what you have said, these are unfortunately not my issue(s). I wish they were!
    1) ARD will run fine for a standard user (at least it did in Tiger) as long as it is properly setup and licensed by an admin user ahead of time (especially the entry of the license code). This I have done, and the license code is recognized just fine. I too thought of the promote / demote idea and have tried it. While promoted, it launches fine for the user, but upon demotion goes back to reinstalling the ARD Agent at each launch of the program (this install process does not run while the user is promoted)...
    2) The systems are from the same disk image. However, I have given system its own unique, valid, legally purchased serial number. Though the program is loaded on the image, it has been installed only. It is not run or licensed on the master, only on the end-user client machines...
It appears to me that from the standard user perspective, the system thinks that the ARD Agent needs to be updated. I have verified with the PackageMaker SnapShot utility that the ARD Agent and its related files are being installed when this happens, and they appear to be the only thing being installed. The Remote Desktop Admin program itself seems to be fine.
Does anybody know exactly what happens at the file system lever when Remote Desktop is launched? I am thinking my standard user is lacking access to a particular file or directory or right, and I am sure I could quickly find it if I new what to trace. Watching fs_usage has yielded lots of information, but nothing that has helped...
I have also removed and reinstalled Remote Desktop to no avail. Disabled all ACLs on the file system, placed known-good receipts and run permission repairs, and forced chmod -R 777 down the path of everything I can find with the names Remote Desktop, ARD, etc...
I am a little worried at this point that the issue is created by the imaging process something like the question marks in docks in the latter updates of 10.4. I have seen similar issues come up (launching apps under Rosetta being one) with users' LaunchServices property lists after moving their home directories from one volume to another, making the issue very hard to track down, as they reside in files that do not contain the name of the app being affected...
Any further ideas would be much appreciated!
    Les

  • ARD 3 Unlimited Client vs. 10 client software

Hello all. You have to bare with me. I just got my first MacBook Pro from my job. I use to be a windows guy until this Im loving it. Im trying to see what is the difference between the unlimited Client and 10 clients. I know the number but I guess what Im really asking is I travel alot to different clients as well as my co-workers and if I by the 10 client software will I just be able to use it at 10 sites or is it just 10 machines i can only install the app on? Also does the Auto Install work with the 10 clients. I've heard different things.
    Thanx

10 clients at a time can be in your main computer list. If you travel to multiple sites regularly you'd be better off with the unlimited client version.

  • If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?

I have several friends and family who are looking for a central place to access information from ( Pictures, home movies etc ).  So I am considering setting up an OSX Lion Server.  There are some other things I can use it for as well.
    Here is my question:
If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?  Or would I have to install the Admin software on each?  Do they intend it to be used strictly as one admin to access many clients?
I always could set up a network drive so they can log in and just see the folders they have created with space on the server I provide them.  But I want them to be able to log an and actually use it as a Remote Desktop.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Dave,
Thanks for the feedback.  I understand that ARD is meant for Remote Administration, but I was not sure if it could be used for my purpose as well.  The reason I was looking to do it this was was because I read several articles online about security and performance issues with setting up VNC and activating screen sharing.  Unless I am misunderstood.
As far as people's activities on the server, mostly it is going to be used as a place for them to store their media.  I will only allow own person ( Who I trust and I know wont botch the server ), to run applications.  Everyone else will be restricted to uploading and downloading content to their designated account on the server as well as a community share on the server.
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Where can i find Client software package for BOE XI 3.1

    Hi
We have  BOE Xi 3.1 on a server . I am looking for the client software package for BOE XI 3.1 so that it could be installed on my laptop. I looked in Service. sap.com/SWDC /Business objects portfolio and could not find the same.  All i am finding in there is SBOP INTGR for SAP and i am assuming that this is the software for SAP integration kit.
Could you please point me to exact location within SWDC where i can find the Client software package for BOEXI 3.1.
    Thanks & Regards
    HGS

Did you download the BOEXI3.1 Server Client Tools when you installed the application? If you have, you can simply run the same install package, and select "client" tools during the installation.
If you don't have the install package, you can download it from the SAP web site. You must have a login account in order to do so. The following are the steps...
    -- Go to: http://service.sap.com
-- Click on SAP Support Portal
-- Enter your S-number and password
-- You will be redirected to the SAP Support Portal (NEVER ever bookmark this URL because it changes all the time, you should bookmark the first URL I gave you)
-- Click on "Downloads" tab from the top menu bar
-- Click on "BusinessObjects Downloads" from the secondary menu bar
-- In the "Installations and Upgrades" section on the main pane, click on "click here"
-- Click on "SBOP ENTERPRISE" from the list
-- Click on "BOBJ ENTERPRISE XI 3.1" from the list
-- Click on "Installation" from the list
-- Click on "WINDOWS" (or other OS) from the list
    -- Select "BOE XI 3.1 (SERVER/CLIENT TOOLS) WIN 1 of 3, 2 of 3, and 3 of 3"
    Hope this helps.

  • The Remote Desktop Client software is not active

    Hello
I just downloaded ARD from the App store. I installed ARD Client 3.4 on the Client machines. Activated the machines in Sharing. All Users with everything checked except for "Show when being observed"
I am able to Observe, Control, Curtain and Lock.
I just tried to start a chat with a client and got the following error:
Unable to Chat with “WebVantage’s iMac”. The Remote Desktop Client software is not active.
I try to send a Message and get the following error:
This task will fail. This task is not supported on “WebVantage’s iMac”.
...with the choices Continue or Go Back
Try to run reports and it just seems to go on forever and says "Waiting for report data."
Many of the other choices won't work either, like Sleep, Wake, etc.
    Am I missing something?
Thank you, in advance, for your time.
    Cooch

WOW! It's been over a month and not one reply? First time this ever happened.
I am finding that I cannot lock the other Macs now. I get:
"This task will fail. This task is not supported on “XXXXX’s iMac”."
    Anyone?

  • HT5170 Why would I be getting this update if I am not, to the best of my knowledge, anyone's ARD client???

Why would I be getting this update if I am not, to the best of my knowledge, anyone's ARD client? I have not installed ARD in this computer, but am constantly getting permissions repair messages regarding remote management from Disk Utility. Very weird...

Yes, it's annoying but the messages are innocuous and you may ignore them. They will be repeated every time you repair permissions. The ARD client was installed by Software Update at some point in the past.
You don't need to repair permissions unless you've received a permissions error message from OS X.

  • From ARD Client, how can I tell what has been done on my machine?

I am in a workgroup that is managed by ARD. I am not an administrator, but I'd like to get an idea of what has been done on my machine by the admin through ARD. It doesn't have to be too specific or real-time, but I'd like to get some idea. For instance, were there reports run on my application usage? Was there software installed? I'm really just fascinated by automation and software used to increase efficiency. I was thinking there would be a way to monitor incoming and outgoing requests or something, but that might not be the answer in this case. So how can I figure out what ARD admin is doing on my machine?

To answer what was asked in the subject of your question... ARD Client will not tell you anything. It is just the doorway.
There may be logs, but those would not be accessible from a non-admin account.

  • ARD client running, but admin cannot connect

I am attempting to connect to a Mac OSX 10.4.11 client, but my ARD administrator does not even see that the target client is running ARD when in fact it is. I can see the client's IP address in the scanner list, but unable to connect. Help?

Just because it can see the IP address in the scanner list doesn't mean the client software is enabled. I can run a scan and see the address of every host on my LAN, including printers, NAS devices and Windows PCs.
Have you actually verified that the client is enabled and the appropriate access privileges have been given?

  • ARD Client on iMacIntel not supported...

    Hello !
    I have a big pb
I can't manage my iMac with ARD client 2.2.1 on my local network by the server.
When I try to connect by ARD Admin 2.2 I receive this message : Failure with connection with "iMac INTEL"
Can you help me for resilve this pb ?
    thank you
    iMac Intel 17" Mac OS X (10.4.5)

OK, I'm not an expert in this area, but I can tell you that I've used the OSX VNC Server from Redstone Software (free) and Chicken of the VNC from GeekSpiff (also free) and they're quite good. Some say BETTER at observing and controlling than Apple Remote Desktop.
However -- the setup is a tiny bit more elaborate with those programs. Not much, but Tiger's built in Remote Desktop client does some critical setup for your clients. Supposedly. (I guess if it did it all correctly we wouldn't be here!).
My big suggestion is to follow the process that Apple's Tech Support gave:
Apple's Tech had me go ethernet cable DIRECTLY from my admin laptop to the affected iMac core duo. Once we did that, we saw the problem was firewall-related. Turning off the firewall on the affected machine did the trick. That gave us the CLUE as to where the problem was, so we could get the firewall settings back up again.
If you turn off all software firewalls, and connect via ethernet on the same subnet to the problem machine, then that takes out any potential router firewall issues and improperly set up port forwarding (not an easy task for those, like me, who haven't done a lot of that!).
If a direct connection with ethernet between the two machines doesn't work (set network TCP/IP to DHCP on BOTH machines) then the affected Mac probably has problems with the installation of Remote Access.
BTW, 90 days of free support comes with the purchase of Remote Desktop. There's a support code on the back of a card -- different than your serial number -- that you use when you call 800-APL-CARE. Make sure to get connected to the XSERVE group, as they support Remote Desktop.
I'm still testing to see if I can punch through my own firewall and observe my wife's iMac via the internet. I've done it with VNC but not yet with Remote Desktop. Once I get that working, I plan on writing an idiot's document on how to do it -- one that even I could've used.
While Apple has done a brilliant job of making these things fairly easy (compared to the Windows world) there's still much more to be done. In my case, I've been an Apple Certified Developer / Partner for 21 years, with my software on every shelf at every Apple Store, and I STILL couldn't figure out all the details without help. So don't feel bad -- and don't give up.

  • ARD Client 3.2.2 update - HD at AirPort unaccessible

After upgrading to ARD Client 3.2.2 via Software Update, I cannot use the drive that is attached to my AirPort Extreme base station anymore from the 10.5.8 Mac ONLY! (Macs running 10.6.2 can use the drive!)
    What might be wrong?
    Please help!
    Thanks,

After re-programming (back to factory settings) both AirPort base stations, the problem was solved.

  • Remote Desktop Client software does not match

    hello,
I run ARD 3 as administrator and just swapped machines by using Migration Tool. Now my ARD on the new machine tells me that "The Remote Desktop Client software on this computer does not match the Administrator software version. the Remote Desktop Administrator software requires a newer version of the client software"
    how do i accomplish this?
    thanks in advance

Sounds like the new machine might still have version 2.2 client? So download and install the newest client, if that fails follow the instructions Apple has for removing ARD (kb #108021) and wipe out everything, then it shouldn't balk. Although there is a setup bug, where if you update a client machine to 3.1 but then try and install the ARD 3.0 CD it will complain and quit! Following kb #108021 wil allow you to install (or go into the actual mpkg and install the individual .pkg file) but doing this made me wonder if I was missing out on some postflight script that does something useful... so I didn't try and make force it. Just make it happy with an ARD lobotomy, then reinstall :/
