Location of iWeb files - External Drive ?

Dear members:
I would like to have my iWeb files residing in an external hard disk. How can I set up iWeb so that it stores its associated files in a external disk instead of my home directory ?
Thank you in advance for your help,
Joseph Chamberlain

Wyodor:
Thank you for the link. The information is very helpful and I have already moved the domain file as the article suggests. It works great.
Another issue that this article does not address is how to move the site location to an external drive. Although I had noticed that the domain information was kept in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb I have also noticed that the site files seem to kept in ~/Sites.
How can I move my sites and files to an external drive ? In case this is possible I would prefer to keep the different files in separate folders so that their associated files don't become mixed. Can I move the files to an external location ? Assuming this can be done is there a way to set this location in iWeb or should I replace the Sites folder with an Alias pointing to the external hard drive ?
Thank you in advance,
Joseph

Hi,  80 % of my itunes files are located on a 3tb external drives; the remainder on a 4TB drive as I ran pout of space. ALL my files are on copied on to the 4TB drive . How do I get iTunes just to use the files on the 4tb drive so I can use the 3tb for other purposes   THX  .

Select the desired location in preferences, then consolidate the media files to it.

  • Location of IWeb File on Yosemite iOS

I am needing to locate my IWeb file to check size of it.  I looked in the library/application support folder, but there is no IWeb listed.
Is there another location where it might be hiding? I have ver 3.0.4 for IWeb.
    Thanks

You need to look in your user Library folder, not the system Library folder.
    Under the Go menu in the Finder at the top of your screen select 'Go to Folder'. Then enter this exactly in the window that appears;
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
It will take you right to your domains.site file which contains all your website data that iWeb opens to build it.

  • Itunes can't locate songs stored in external drive

i had created playlists and added songs to the playlists in itunes 7.02. these songs are stored on an external drive. i did not sync my ipod immediately but tried it a few days later. despite the external drive being connected to my laptop, when i tried to sync the ipod with itunes, for 90% of the songs there was an exclamation mark next to the song & i had to manually double click on a song name in itunes, and locate it in the external drive, in order for itunes to be able to sync it.
i can't do that for 3000+ songs. why can't itunes recognise and locate these songs when they have been stored in the itunes library from the external drive? isn't there a way to tell itunes to locate songs in the external drive? especially when they had been added from there in the first place?

    Hi there,
I'm having the same problem, I'll list it in case I'm somehow different from the other case but unfortunately directing iTunes to that folder doesn't seem to do the trick...?
Have bought a Seagate 320GB external drive, copied my iTunes library (that was located in my /Users/Shared folder) to a new location on my external drive and redirected iTunes to the new location. It said it was updating the folder which took a while and I assumed was a good sign due to my 8948 songs but alas the dreaded exclamation mark has appeared next to every track. If I redirect one to the new location it works fine but f*ed if I'm gonna do that for the other 8947. If I quit iTunes and reopen it, it's still directed to the same correct place and the previously located still works but the rest don't. Is there a) some reason this may not be working correctly; or b) a quick way to redirect every song to their location? Thanks so much for your help.

    Depends which files you mean.

  • Newbie question on managing catalog files & external drives

I'm new to Lightroom and just downloaded a trial version of LR4 earlier this week.  I'm an amatuer photographer (and I really mean amatuer ) ... and serve as a volunteer for a local summer baseball team (college players).  I've taken - on average - 5,000 photos per summer for each of the last 5 years. In addition to posting the photos of each game to my Phanfare.com site (where players and families can download them), I create a keepsake DVD with video clips and a slideshow for the players and coaches at the end of the season.  If I decide to become a LR4 user, I would be organizing those photos from the past...as well as on a game-by-game basis this coming summer and into the future.  In addition to backing up all of my photos to DVD and Phanfare.com, I have a designaed external hard drive for these photos.  On the external drive, I have a different folder for each year and subfolders for each game.  In the past, I've kept the current year photos on my laptop and back them up to the other locations as the season progressess.
As I map out my plans, I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage the past years photos, current year photos and the related catalog file(s).  I won't always have the large external hard drive with me....and I don't have enough room on my laptop for all years.  There are times I need to search for photos across multiple years; there are times only in the current year...although I have no problem restricting myself to using the large "master" external hard drive for those multiple year searches.  I do have a portable 160 GB hard drive at my disposal that I can use and take with my laptop at all times if needed.
Would appreciate any advice on how best to set up the catalog files so that I can manage current year and past year photos...meet my mobility requirements for the current year...as well as the master external hard drive.
Thanks in advance for your help.  (Hopefully my explanation and question makes sense)

Advice #1: use one catalog -- don't even think about multiple catalogs; multiple catalogs will not help, this will only hinder you in your work. Inside of Lightroom, you can easily organize different years, different teams, different players, different sports, and anything else you want to organize.
With regards to travel, you can export portions of your catalog to whatever HD you want to take with you.

  • ITunes keeps forgetting location of music on external drive

iTunes keeps forgetting the location of the music i have which are stored on an external drive. it remembers a handful of them but forgets the rest so i keep getting an exclamation when i want to play them. how can i make iTunes permanently remember these files????

ah sure that's what i have been doing. the drive is always on before iTunes but iTunes can never find my music without me actually finding them for it. the location in iTunes preferences is also pointing towards the drive so not sure why it can't find them!?

  • Location of iweb file

I purchased a new mac pro tower.  I removed the drive from my previous mac pro tower and installed it in the new tower.  I started the new mac pro tower and at the appropriate locaiton asked to have my previous files and settings transferred to the new computer.  All seemed to work well until I started working with I web.
I opened I web and there was my site as it should be.  I made changes and uploaded over several days.  Still all is well.  I then decided to work on my mac book pro while on vacation so I found the domain.sites2 file in the user folder (after having to make it visible on Lion) and copied it to my laptop.  Upon opening it was the wrong file!  I did several copies and all of the results were the same, some much older version of my site.
I removed the file from the new tower and opened iWeb and there was my site Still !!  It did not take long to find that iWeb was using the file on my backup drive instead of the user folder on my new tower.
Somehow the utility to move data to a new computer did not move the file at it should have but told the new iWeb to use the file on the old drive.
This seems to be the only location you can report bugs??  Please post a reply if there is a better forum/location to report bugs.
    David

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible.  To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an applicaiton.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. The script modifies the iWeb preference file when it's launched so one can open the domain file the first time under Lion or switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate

  • How do I move the location of library to external drive?

I started uploading pictures in Revel and didn't realize that it was taking up space on the limited hard drive in my Mac Pro.  How can I move the back up, and all related files to an external hard drive and still keep everything on the cloud?

    Hi Johnny,
Unfortunately, you can not move the location of the library on your Mac. What you may want to do is turn off "Keep All Originals" - then, upload your images then put those originals on the external HD. Then you'd have your original images backed up on the ext HD, also have them in the cloud, but off your desktop.

  • Cannot access backup files external drive - only unknown user can

I've been in problems since a while with the _unknown user issue. I've read several discussions like the following:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2290911?threadID=2290911
My problem is the following. I upgraded to snow leopard 10.6.7 and I did a clean install so I wiped out my internal harddrive, I wanted to start from scratch again. I figured that I would be able to access all the files on my external harddrive in my Timemachine backup. Everything works fine, except that I can't access the time machine backup. It says 'you have no access' under Info of these maps and only user _unknown can read and write.
I guess the solution must be that I create a new user account which corresponds with UID of the _unknown user account and that should replace it and should restore access to the files? The only thing is that it is a timemachine backup so I don't know if that poses some additional problems. It would be helpful if someone could explain me what the real problem is, I've been trying lots of thing, but I'm afraid that I would make things worse. So your help we be greatly appreciated!

You will have great difficulty defeating the ACLs and permissions on your backups.
Your best bet is to start over; erase your disk, install OSX, and use Setup Assistant to transfer all your stuff.  See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?, and note especially the green box there.

  • Drive letters and Volume label - How to associate with each other so i do not have to find my library everytime i move my external drive between my PC and MacBook Pro.

Hi, i'm having issues within the folders area of the library module.
My setup is the following. My home PC has Windows 8.1. My work laptop is a 17" MacBook Pro. The library file as well as the smart previews are all located on a dropbox drive.
My issue is that when i would like to sync changes with the original files located on a 3TB external drive i share with both the PC and Mac, the drive name changes due to Windows using a Drive letter and OSX using a Volume Label. Is there a way to associate; for example H:  drive under the folders section with the External Drives Volume label so that i do not have to locate the missing files everytime i wish to synchronise?
Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated as i have switched from Aperture so i can edit my photos easily on both my Home PC and my Laptop.

Nope. You can't change operating system mechanics. They simply work differently. For such a scenario in fact a NAS connected via network interface would be more suitable and avoid the issue...

  • Itunes folder on an external drive is missing.

I am getting the following error:
An iTunes library file could not be found in the folder "itunes music". please choose a different folder.
I have an external hard drive that has all my music... which is backed up by another external hard drive. The primary drive which iTunes plays from is called Itunes Music - Maxtor (brand of HD). Today when I opened itunes I could not find any of my songs... however could see the drive on my desk top. So when I clicked the drive went to a song double clicked the song the song played in itunes. Meaning the folder is there and the content is still there but itunes won't locate the folder. Also the folder is set up correctly in itunes. meaning in preferences itunes is set up to use the external drive... any suggestions?

    hi,
the message you got isn't related to iTunes not finding your music files but to iTunes not finding your library files which is called "iTunes Music Library".
only you can find this files that may have been moved by mistake or may be simply located also on your external drive. if you tried to open iTunes at a moment where your external drive wasn't available, iTunes will give you this message.
simply find your "iTunes Music Library" file location using Spotlight or the Finder. then start iTunes and select the option to locate your library and browse up to your file. if your songs are stored on an external drive, it is a good practice to keep also your "iTunes Music Library" on your external drive.

  • How can I download my products to an external drive

I want to download my products from the Creative Cloud to my external drive. I have the Creative Cloud there already, but when I download the products (PS) it wants to put it on my hard drive.

    What OS?
Most applications are not contained in a single app file. Certainly, Adobe apps are not. On Mac OSX, for example, ALL apps MUST be installed in the boot-drive's "Applications" directory, so the OS can properly locate and maintain other files (located elsewhere on the boot drive), for successful app performance. Attempting to install in other locations (such as an external drive) is problematic for the OS.

  • How do I use Itunes from external drive as main sync for Iphone 4

I apologize if this is obvious but I have searched for quite awhile without finding result.
I currently have my iTunes synced to my Macbook Pro. I purchased a Macbook Air for ease in travel. I would like to move sync of my material on iTunes to my Air as I carry it more with me.
I was told at an Apple Store to purchase a Time Machine and an external hard drive. Both I purchased. I then read for a few hours how to move my itunes to the external drive. The only way I could finally get it to work was to physically connect a USB between the MacBook Pro and the External Drive. Once my Pro recognized the External Drive I dragged my Itunes and watched it copy all the data.
Unfortunately, when I am on the Air I cannot locate within Finder the External Drive. I do see my time Machine but cannot figure out how to get my itunes data from the external drive through the time machine.
    You still with me?
So, can someone help me understand how to go the next step. As I understand from reading this forum I would then go into my Advanced Properties in Itunes (on the Air) and choose to relocate where the iTunes sync occurs. Then I can use my Air for syncing as it wont be dependent on the limited space and once I've changed the properties location for where to find my iTunes data I wont be dependent on the Pro.
PS: Yes I've downloaded all of the newest product software updates (iTunes, iPhone OS, Macs) as of the date this is posed 3/20/2011

    try this:
hold the option key and launch iTunes. at the prompt, click on +choose library+ and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
obviously, the external holding your library must be mounted on your desktop for iTunes to find it.
if the drive is connected but doesn't show up on the Air's desktop, go finder > preferences > general and check if +external disks+ is check marked under +show these items on the desktop+.
