Location of library folder/s on macpro

Ok so here are a few basic questions i should know but i need to ask.
1. how many library folders should there be on the mac? im assuming 1.
2. am i correct in saying that the correct location should be (macintosh HD/users/my home folder/library (last screen shot)?
3. i have 4 total. They are not all idendtical with their content.   i know this can't be correct.
4. is there a program than removes unused files or can i manually delete any of these without it affecting the rest of my system?
here are some screen shots:

Thanks for your reply Martin.
I appreciate it. i won't be messing around with the libraries.
while I have your attention, do you have any thoughts on where i might find my emails from a backup stored on external. i recently reinstalled osx 10.9.1 so i'm having to put everything back in its place.
the only thing i cant figure out is the email.
apple forum suggests:
Library>Preferences>com.apple.mail.plist* file.
and swapping the backed up .plist file with current one.
i cant fine the com.apple.mail.plist file anywhere except in the most recent app.
it doest't make sense that all my other components would have been backup  and not mail?
is there a way it could be a hidden file, but if so shouldnt' that show up in search?
thanks
owen
i think i may have found something here is a screen shot. not sure if you can read it.
i was doing a search and dumb luck a bunch of emails poped up and this was the location.
when i go into owendawson folder there is no library visible. how do i make it visable?
thank you
owen

  • I Don't Have a ~/Library Folder!!!

Just upgraded to Lion 10.7.1, trying to find my Safari prefs file, which should be at ~/Library/Preferences, but I can't locate my ~/Library folder... it's not there! I thought the Mac would have problems without it, but everything, all my apps seem to be working fine.
I'm not blaming the Lion install for this... I don't know if the Library folder was there before...

Finder > Go To > Hold down ALT key and viola there is an entry for the Library
It's still there, but Apple decided to hide it from the user.

  • How do I move iTunes Library folder to another location?

Hi guys .. I have a question I can't seem to find a fully working answer to.
I have iTunes 11 installed, which has it's folder in the default location:
    C:\Users\ahmadka\Music\iTunes\ ...
However I have all my music stored in one central folder located in my Dropbox:
    C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library\..............
I've recently made the switch from Dropbox to Google Drive, so I'm trying to move the above music containing folder to:
    C:\Users\ahmadka\Google Drive\ahmadka's Music Library\..............
But before doing anything, I made a backup of my Music\iTunes folder.
Then I moved the folder as mentioned above (moved ahmadka's Music Library folder from Dropbox to Google Drive). However obviously after moving the folder, iTunes was unable to locate any songs (I see that ! sign next to any song I try to play). So then I tried going to File >> Add Folder to Library, and then I browsed for the new 'ahmadka's Music Library' folder. However now iTunes just re-added all the songs again, instead of realizing that they are the same songs which have just been moved.
Restored my iTunes backup and then tried this:
In another thread someone suggested running the FindTracks script to fix those incorrect links. I did this and it seemed to have fixed the links to 80% of the songs, but the remaining 20% still remain. Since they're a lot of songs, I can't manually fix each song's link.
One way would be to just delete everything in my library and re-add all songs from the new Google Drive folder, but I don't want to do this as I loose my ratings, playcount, etc .. I don't want to loose years worth of work.
Is there any other easier way that allows me to move the songs from one location to another ?

    Okay, thanks for that explanation.
First let me tell you the paths for my specific scenario:
My library folder (i.e. A) (i.e. the one containing the ITL file) is: C:\Users\ahmadka\Music\iTunes
My media folder (i.e. B) (i.e. the one mentioned in Edit > Preferences > Advanced) is: C:\Users\ahmadka\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
But do note that as I've said above, all my active music is currently in this Dropbox folder: C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library
For example, here are some music folders/files I have here (just to tell you how it's organized):
    C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library\30 Seconds To Mars\A Beautiful Lie\01. Attack.mp3
    C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library\30 Seconds To Mars\A Beautiful Lie\02. A Beautiful Lie.mp3
    C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library\Game of Thrones (OST)\01 - Main Title.mp3
    C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library\Game of Thrones (OST)\02 - North of the Wall.mp3
    etc...
Since the actual songs folder (i.e. C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library) is not within either the media or library folder indicated above, how does this work with your solution ?
Remember that I'd just like to move the ahmadka's Music Library folder from Dropbox to Google Drive.
    EDIT:
Also, you said this in your last post:
"A contains B as an immediate subfolder and the library is portable if all the content that is attached to the library is located somewhere inside this media folder."
While A does contain B in my case, do note that B does NOT contain all the media files. The actual media files are in that ahmadka's Music Library folder, which is currently located outside both A and B.
When I download a new song or album from iTunes, it gets downloaded inside B by default. But then I manually move it from there and place it inside my ahmadka's Music Library folder. This causes the link to the media file to break in iTunes, but I fix this by removing it from my iTunes library, and then re-adding the C:\Users\ahmadka\Dropbox\ahmadka's Music Library folder to iTunes. iTunes then scans the folder, realizes that 99% of the contents were already mapped, and just adds the new addition which I had just pasted into ahmadka's Music Library folder. Doing this everytime is a nuisance for me at times, but I'm now used to it.
Also, I like to keep my actual songs outside in a more 'public' location such as Dropbox, so that I can easily browse to that folder from other synced places (e.g. office, consoles, etc.) to listen to songs, etc.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • How to: Exculde the library folder located in the shared user folder.

Ive been told this is a hard concept to grasp. I am sharing my home folder, I want to exclude the "Library" folder from being shared. How do I do this? -Thanks you

In theory, you should be able to select the file in Finder, then use Finder -> File -> Get Info.  Then under the "Sharing & Permissions" section, change "everyone" to "No Access".
This would prevent anyone except yourself from accessing your HOME -> Library folder tree.  Of course if you mount your home volume using your username and password, then you will be able to access Library.

  • Mail.app prefs. fail to change location of Downloads folder.

I recently migrated my mail from Eudora to Mail.app (Mac Pro, OS 10.6.8). I usedthe Mail.app Preferences to change the location of the Downloads (i.e. attachments) folder from the default location (Users>Library>Mail Downloads) to the subfolder in the OS Downloads folder that I used in Eudora. Despite this my attachments still end up in the default location. Help please!
As an aside I would be running straight back to Eudora were it not for the death sentence pronounced by the absence of Rosetta in Lion. Here are some comments that I recently posted to the TidBits newsletter where there is an excellent article by Adam Engst on making the changeover to Mail.app:
The major surprise for me was how really crude the Mail.app experience seems after 14 years of using Eudora. The way Mail handles mailboxes has been a source of major frustration. With Eudora I found it convenient to create separate Eudora Folders for my three accounts, each accessible via an alias of the respective settings file in the dock.  That way I could locate an item that I need much faster than when the mailboxes (and their subfolders) for all three accounts are crammed into a single sidebar - especially as mailbox folders enclosing subfolders will not open with a double click, precise clicking on the triangle is required.  The ability to access mailboxes from the Eudora Mailbox menu - drilling down through successive subfolders, if required - is vastly superior.  Similarly Mail's procedure for moving messages and/or creating rules is really primitive compared to Eudora's facility to create destination mailboxes as part of a single seamless process.  Given that development of Eudora ground to a halt in 2006 one could be forgiven for expecting a lot better from Apple's in-house e-mail client in 2011.

    Mike,
Where in the Sidebar to the Mail window do you see any Sent mailboxes? Is there one beneath the Inbox when viewing at home? Check and report the settings at Mail Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors, please. If you have to do this when at home, I understand. There is a way to instruct Mail to use a particular folder for a particular purpose that probably needs to be done on the home computer, but I would like to know those preference settings before proceeding with that.

  • My iphoto library folder with files of my pictures is missing from the pictures folder, only the application icon remains.  I have read through similar discussions but have not managed to fix the problem with the recommended solutions.  Can anyone help?

I have a Macbook Pro with iphoto '08 running on Mac OS X version 10.5.8.  I used to be able to go to my pictures folder on my HD and access my pictures via that iphoto library folder.  There used to be a small arrow next to the iphoto icon with all the albums then listed within the folder (to the right).  That arrow is now gone and all I have is the iphoto application icon which just reopens iphoto when I click on it, but I want to be able to access the data files.  Somehow I do have files btwn 2008 and 2009 but it hasn't created these since then...Could someone please help me to restore this ability?  I have read other similar posts but they seem to be related to lost data all together and I do luckily have all my pictures in iphoto still. I just can't access them in the pictures folder which means I can't access them on my external hard drive.  I am now out of start up disc space somehow so I figured I had to delete some albums (I have 12,090 pictures) and do have them backed up but want to make sure I can go back for them when I need them.  I did export all the pictures to a folder on the hard drive but it is all 12,090 in one long list with only numbers as names and not in any order, this will be a nightmare to access later!  Please help!  Thank you!

You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
That indicates that that is your library.  Put it in your Pictures folder if it already isn't there and make sure it's named "iPhoto Library".  It should look like this:
    Now launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select that library to open.  If you get that same message close iPhoto and try the following;
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • , I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive. Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing, Can't play music .. how to restore back to original state .

I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive.Cant play any music as it "can't find" the library  Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing.   How to restore back to original state . I have tried re-installing  - with no change

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • My library folder is not displayed

I'm trying to organise my Word templates (Office for Mac). The file location is users/me/library etc but in Finder I have no library folder. Any ideas?

Lion hides it.  If you don't want to make it visible then use the Finder's Go menu, Go To Folder, and type ~/Library.
To make it visible then do the following in terminal:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
and if you want to hide it again,
    chflags hidden ~/Library

  • Problem on PC: During import, I can locate the sources folder however the photo do not display. Was working fine.

Problem on PC: During import, I can locate the sources folder however the photo do not display. Was working fine. All file types, Lightroom is no longer recognising the images to import, The panel that usually displays them remains empty.  Try using backup versions, removing software that could conflict , still no joy, has anyone had this problem?

    Did you follow this procedure?
Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • My quicktime library folder disappeared, how do I get it back?

I was trying to install this XVID Codec for the application toast titanium in order for it to work. I found a file and it told me to put it in the library/quicktime folder, so I did. I restarted the computer and it didn't work. So I found another one and when I was going to do the same steps and put it in that library/quicktime folder it wasn't there. Does anyone know why it would have disappeared, or how to get it back?

There are 2 of them. Which one is missing?
    Home>Library>QT
    Machintosh HD>Library>QT
Use Spotlight to locate the missing folder if you have not done so already. If Spotlight is unable to locate, then reinstall QT.

  • How to check the location of download folder programmatically in browsers like Safari, Firefox etc on Mac?

I am a part of Automation testing and I am downloading and installing the files programmatically with Selenium and Applescript on Mac. Is their any way to check the location of download folder on browsers programmatically?? if so pls suggest and also ways to change the location of download folder in Java or Applescript.

You will need to read and write to preference files. A job best suited for the shell with either command line tool, defaults or PlistBuddy. Each application preference file has its own structure. Reading Safari's preference file is easy.
    defaults read $HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari DownloadsPath
Firefox isn't as clear but this should give you the download path.
    defaults read $HOME/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox NSNavLastRootDirectory
Firefox also keeps a sqlite database of downloads which may be useful to query. Command line tools can be wrapped in Applescript. Also, programmatically changing preference files on an open application is discouraged.
