Location of ONT, PSU/battery, Router, STB, phone adapter

I am intending to convert from TimeWarner cable TV/internet and regular landline phone to FIOS triple essentials.  A couple weeks ago an installer came to string the fiber from the pole to the roof eve.  I talked to him and understood that the ONT would go under the eve near where the existing phone lightning surge arrestor and TV/internet cable splitter are now located.  Outputs from the ONT would connect directly into the phone wires, the TV cable, and the cable to the computer (modem) router which are all grouped right there under the eve.  The only additional wiring would need to be from the PSU/battery to the ONT.
A different installer came to my house yesterday to put in the FIOS equipment and make the connections.  He said he needed to put the ONT within 12 ft of the electric utility meter and run his own grounding wire to the ONT because the existing grounding wire for the existing surge arrestor and CableTV was too long (it is about 30 ft).  He said the existing grounding wire did not comply with newer changes to building code.  I won't argue with that, but it caused a problem because he wanted to also put the PSU/battery near the ONT.  The only nearby AC outlet was thru the wall into the formal living room where the PSU/battery would be located.  Wife, and I, rejected that.  The installers only alternative proposal was to have me, at my expense, hire an electrician to mount an exterior weatherproof box near the AC meter and run conduit/wires from the breaker/meter box to this new box.  The new box needs to be large enough to contain an AC outlet and the PSU/battery (14" x 10" x 3.5").  I estimate this would be a several hundred $$ expense, which I really don't care to spend.  Also, the location of this box on the outside wall is in direct afternoon sun where temperatures would get very hot.  This is not good for the PSU electronics nor for the battery (which I understand is my problem to replace when it fails).
So, my questions are:
What is the maximum distance allowable between the ONT and the PSU/battery?
What type of wiring (gauge, voltage rating, number of conductors, etc) is needed to connect the ONT to the PSU/battery?
There is an indoor broom closet about 18 ft from the utility meter.  If the PSU/battery is put in this closet, it would be easy to run low voltage wires thru the attic and thru the outside wall to the ONT under the eve near the AC meter.  If the installer did not sign-up to do attic wiring then I would be willing to do this myself.  It sure beats hiring an electrician to install an outdoor box.  The outdoor box would probably also need a building permit, whereas the low voltage wiring would not.
The above described trouble also got me thinking about other installation issues:
How does the phone wiring get 48Vdc bias?  Does this come from the PSU/battery via the ONT, and delivered to tip-ring wiring out of the ONT?
Does the TV signal come out of the ONT, via coax cable and connect directly into the RG59 house cabling and splitters from multiple TVs?
A SetTopBox goes at the other end of this coax, near the main TV in the family room, right?  Does the STB also need a cat5 cable to it?
Do I need to rent another STB at the TV in the bedroom?  I've heard that there are simple converter boxes that let you use the TV's own tuner to select channel.  True?
Does the STB have an output for FM radio antenna connection, or do I get the music channels directly from the STB via audio band RCA cables?
Does computer (internet data) connect to the ONT or to the STB?  This is cat5, right?  Internet used to travel via coax from the eve to a cable modem in the home office.  Will the installer replace that coax with cat5?
Does the new FIOS router have at least 3 RJ45 ports (for other computers, X-box/Playstation) as well as wireless for laptops?
Can the new FIOS router also act as a hub for home network data/printer sharing?
Are there interconnect diagrams available anywhere on the Verizon website (or other sites) that can  help me understand?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can answer any of my questions.

FIOS provides phone service by providing POTS Emulation.  On my installation all of the internal phones ring just fine so I am assuming that the ONT is providing the necesssary voltage, A single COAX Connection comes out of the ONT and goes to a splitter which will then connect to your houses COAX Wiring.  This contains TV Information as well as the Default Data Connection for your Router (Can be changed to CAT5). TVs with a QAM Tuner can receive Local Channels and Music Channels without a STB.  If you require any addition channels, Guide Information, PPV, On-Demmand, or any other FIOS Services you will require a STB.  There is a Digital Adapter that will receive SD Channels, but nothing else.
No FM Radio Connection.  The STB receives the music channels just like other tv channels. Router (Computer Data) connects to the ONT via COAX by Default.  It can be provisioned to use CAT5 if needed and if you have pre run the wiring from the ONT to your Router Location. The Router has 4 RJ45 Port for Hardwired Connections and Wireless G Connectivity. The Router will allow all of the devices that connect thru it to be part of your home network.  You can not attach a printer or external hard drive to the router.  You can however use a NAS. There are many different ways, each with their own pros and cons, to configure the router or to use multiple routers.  Additional infomation can be found here:

  • Location of Infinity modem and router

I would like to change my broadband to Infinity but need to know a few things before doing so. The main OpenReach socket (the one with a removable lower section) is above the front door fanlight. From this box I have two wires (extensions) coming out from behind (nothing is plugged into the front), one, about 3-4 metres in length goes straight through the ceiling into the above bedroom to the router (Voyager 2500V). The other one goes to the sitting room and is a longer cable. I have also done away with the ‘bell wire’ so only two wires exist in both connections.
I would like to locate the new modem and router in the bedroom where it is at the moment. There is no way I can use a 13 amp socket in the hallway and have the equipment there. My questions are:
    1. Will the current location of my router be alright for Infinity?
    2. How many Ethernet ports does the Infinity router have?
    3. Does the router have VOIP like my Voyager?
    4. If Infinity misbehaves, is it just a matter of unplugging the modem and router and plugging in my old Voyager?
No guesses please, I need to know exactly before going ahead with Infinity.
    Thank you.

    Jonny
Thank you for your reply. I don’t want to sign up and ask an engineer when he arrives, I want to know before signing up.
Also, I’m not familiar with your terms, e.g. terminated phone cable, but I won’t ask you to explain them. To me there are three types of cable, a two-wire cable that runs from the master socket to a wall point, a telephone cable that plugs into a wall socket and an Ethernet cable that runs from the computer to the router. Are other types utilised by Infinity?
    Further explanation of my wiring:
The wire from the rear of the master plug terminates as an extension in the bedroom where the micro filter and router plug in. It’s not used for a telephone, just the router. Can’t the new modem plug into this? Power points are not a problem in the bedroom.
I installed the cable about two years ago after acquiring a new type main box (the previous on worked but I was told this was better), at the same time I used just two of the 4 or 6 wires in both my extensions. The previous 40 year-old extension ran all around the hall skirting board, up the side of the stairs, around the landing to a bedroom. It had been painted many times and was almost brittle, that’s why I decided to go through the ceiling, under the floor boards and up to make a socket on the skirting board. It’s only a few metres long and I can easily take the carpet up, remove a floorboard and change the extension wire to any other kind of wire, e.g. an Ethernet cable.

  • Connect smart TV to ONT without using router?

I have Fios TV, internet and phone.  My ONT is in the basement and is run to a router 2 floors above and at the other end of the house.  A smart TV, which is one floor directly above and only about 20 feet from the ONT, has poor Netflix performance using wirless internet that is at the other end of the house and a floor up.  I understand that the solution to the Netflix problem is to wire the TV directly to the internet.  However, this would require pulling ethernet wire from the router, down two floors and to the other end of the house and then back through the floor to the TV.
Coaxial cable connects the ONT to the router.  It would be simple to connect the ONT to the TV using the ONT's eithernet port, but it is unclear if that would work given that the router has a coaxial connection.
    Can you offer any solutions?

You can't connect the TV to the ethernet jack in the ONT.   Your WAN connection is currently provisioned over coax (MOCA WAN).  The ethernet jack in the ONT can't be used at the same time.
I would suggest getting a MOCA bridge.

Simply connect one side to your coax and connect the ethernet side to your TV.

No.  The Find My iPhone service can only be used if it was set up and active, with location services enabled, before the iPhone is lost.

Try doing a hard reset or restore the phone and set it up as a new device.

  • BEFSR41 fed from SPA2102 VoIP Phone Adapter with Router

urrently, a broadband cable modem is connected  to the input of a new BEFSR41 4-port router.  The router feeds 4  computers (a newer "primary" PC, and 3 secondary "old goats" that I use  to print online grocery coupons).  The 4 PC's are networked to share a  common printer, a single directory on the "primary" PC, and using a  4-port KVM switch - I switch a single keyboard and mouse to whichever PC  that I am using at the time.
I  want to purchase a Linksys SPA2102 VoIP Phone Adapter with Router and  integrate it into my existing system (noted above).  This is probably a  no-brainier for some, but I am new to routers and VoIP and that is why I  am posting here, before buying the SPA2102.
According  to the SPA2102 instruction manual that I downloaded from the Cisco  website, there are two RJ45 connectors, one YELLOW and the other BLUE  with the following typical connection configurations:
YELLOW  . . . Connect one end of an Ethernet network cable (included) to the  ETHERNET port of the Phone Adapter.  Connect the other end to the  Ethernet port of your PC.
BLUE . . . Connect one end of a different  Ethernet network cable to the INTERNET port of the Phone Adapter.   Connect the other end to your cable/DSL modem.
What  I would like to do is, hopefully, simple and effective.  I want to  connect my cable modem to the SPA2102's BLUE connector, and from its  YELLOW connector connect to the BEFSR41's input.  Will this work,  ensuring both the BEFSR41 and SPA2102 function properly?
    Thank you.

if you have access to the device and it is not remotely provisioned by the VOIP company. try to change the registration expires to a 24 hour time period as well as well as the Resync Periodic: in the provisioning tab to 24 hours as well.

  • Incredible Battery Drain While Phone is OFF

I'm on my third Sprint Pre right now and thought I finally found some rock-solid hardware.  Sadly, there's this strange problem affecting the battery of my phone.  When the phone is on, the battery operates like normal.  When I turn the phone off at night, I get the low battery symbol the next morning... it's draining like crazy (I've turned it off with close to a full charge too).
To give you a comparison, while the phone was on and in standby for five or so hours, the battery merely dropped 2% or so.  While off for less than an hour, I had a battery drain of ~10%!
So I ran a little test.  I shut off the phone and then replaced the battery.  No problems the next morning.  Thought the problem was resolved.  Turned the phone off the next night and the following morning I'm greeted with the low battery signal again.
My theory (I think it's the only plausible one) is that the phone is not shutting off completely and something continues to run therefore draining my battery.  Hence removing the battery while it's "off" and then placing it back in completely turned the phone off resulting in no battery drainage.
Is there a solution to this problem without resorting to another exchange (I highly doubt it)?  Doctoring didn't help by the way.  Each refurbed unit I got fixed one problem and added others.  Aside from this battery problem and some minor light leakage, this unit is quite solid.  I love webOS, but the shoddy refurb quality is giving me a headache...
    -UPDATE-
Strangely enough, both batteries I tested were defective.  What are the odds?  Sprint replaced the battery and now all is well.

My theory (I think it's the only plausible one) is that the phone is not shutting off completely and something continues to run therefore draining my battery.  Hence removing the battery while it's "off" and then placing it back in completely turned the phone off resulting in no battery drainage.
My battery was driving draining too which was really annoying.  I use it extensively to make Long Distance business calls and it would die after 20 minutes or so.  I didn't try taking it out when the phone was off but I did get a free replacement so I think there must have been a batch of defective batteries. london

  • Phone adapter issues

When I put the wall adapter into the battery port the phone will begin to charge but as soon as I put it down it stops. I have to hold the charger at an angle for the phone to stay charging. Any thoughts? (Plus ever since I updated the phone, I don't see the battery meter).

I just wanted to follow-up here for everyone's benefit.
I proceeded with the instructions for hard reset and disabled my firewall (Norton 2008) as instructed.  I still could not change the security settings and to make matters worse, my PC connection to the router throughout configuration kept degrading and I kept losing the webpage.  I tried different Ethernet ports on the router nad had the same problem.  I then connected my PC to spare ports on my Vonage router and had no problems so I think it is a router issue.
Any more suggestions?  Looks like it is time for a new wireless device.  Little disappointed this failed after 2.5 years in service.  Would have expected a little longer life.
    Thanks,
