Location of thumbnails and copying imported photo files?

I am just learning to use Photoshop Elements 9 in a Windows XP computer. In Organizer, I imported some photo files from an external hard drive and then thumbnail photos were created in the workspace of the Orgnaizer.
1) Where are these thumbnail photo files located? I looked in the Adobe folder, C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\My Documents\My Pictures\Adobe but the thumbnails are not there.
2) How do I prevent photo files from being copied to my C: hard drive when they are imported from my camera or external hard drive, or when they are scanned into the Organizer?
Thanks.
Richard

Specify a custom location for your catalog.  Organizer will create a folder (named for the catalog) at that location and the catalog and its associated thumbnail files will be created in that folder.
As mentioned earlier, you can also specify the location for imported photos.

I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.

It looks like the card may be the problem, and your best bet is to try the Card Reader - this will make the card accessible by the Finder and you may be able to drag the pics off to the desktop or, at worst, try recover the pics with an app like MediaRecover

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • I've just upgraded to Iphoto v9.4.1 and cannot import photos from my hard drive

I've just upgraded to Iphoto v9.4.1 and cannot import photos from my hard drive. no matter what method I use, either click and drag or through the File menu. All I get is a message 'Preparing to import' - file size is less than 300 kb

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Surely you meant "just import the photo"?  The Spell checker is dangerously creative !

  • Difficulty sending photos through iPhoto 11 often get a connection error.  When I go to my email and copy the photos in email the emails go out always with never a problem

I have difficulty sending photos through iPhoto 11 often get a connection error.  When I go to my email and copy the photos in email the emails go out right away and never seem to have a connection problem?  Why did they cahnge the process for sending photos form iphoto?

It is an addition option some people like and other do not (I do not)  --  to use it as always is trivial - in the iPhoto preferences set Apple Mail as the e-mail client

You seem to think you are talking to Omnifocus here.  The odds of actually reaching them here are practically 0%, I would guess.
I suggest you go to the omnigroup forums and present your suggestions in the omnifocus forum.

  • I inserted my camera's disk into my Mac laptop running 10.8 and no "import photos" appeared. There was no camera icon just airstream.s

I inserted a disk from my camera into my Mac book pro and No "import photos"message appeared. There was no camera icon either. I have eited and turned the computer off to remove the disk and then tried again to no avil. I have not been able to eject the disk at all as is suggested. i have to turn the machine off to eject. Help!
What should I do to be able to import photos?  Have I done something to make the camera icon disapper? It worked fine yesterday. Cannot stop airstream.

Just open iPhoto (double click oon iPhoto in your applications) and you should be set. It should show you all available devices that it can import photos from.

  • In iMovie is there any way when you import your files to just make the file an alias like final cut does and not actually import and copy the whole file again into my mac. It's taking a lot of my space up. Thanks

I just want to see if there is any way that I can import the files into iMovie as an alias like Final Cut Pro and Express does. I hate having to copy the file again because it takes up alot of space on my Mac. Thanks.

No, but you can import your Event to an external drive from the import screen.
It is also possible to create a symbolic link to another location. The link stays in your iMovie Events or iMovie Project folder, but the actual file resides somewhere else. I don't do it this way, so I can't share any details.

  • Hi, I'm new to Mac and need my photo file structure to resemble what it was on my PC

I uploaded all my new photos from my PC, which then fed into iphoto.
However when I look into the iphoto library they have automatically created folder and file names, rather than what they were names in my PC. In the iphoto ap they appear fine there.
How do I get the library structure to resemble the folder names given in the iphoto ap or on my old pc?
It is the latest operating structure and iphoto ap running.

Just tp highlight a couple of major issues with a referenced library
Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto Library
This preference is turned on by default. When you import photos from a hard disk, iPhoto copies(duplicates) the photos to the iPhoto library and uses the copies. The original photos remain untouched in their current locations.
If you have an extensive collection of photos on your computer and you want to keep your current file organization, you can have iPhoto point to your original photo files instead of importing them into your iPhoto library. To have iPhoto access your photos from their current locations on your hard disk (rather than making copies of them), deselect this checkbox. Note that if you edit one of these images in iPhoto, the edited version is saved in the iPhoto library and the original file remains untouched.
If you turn off this preference, be sure not to move the photos from the location from which they were imported. If you move the files, your iPhoto library won’t work correctly.
So you still have not reporduced the PC structure since you only have that structure for the original photos - no edits appear in that structure
    Importing is more compicated
Deleting ai more complicated since you have to delete form iPhoto nand then from yoru own managed file structure
and most critically you can not more the photos - so replacing defective hardware or upgrading to a larger hard drive or to a new computer is not possible
Plus there is no gain from a referenced library - so I suggest you do not recommend it since it does not work for hardly anyone

  • Is it possible to ignore and not import JPG files when a JPG and raw file of the same name exist?

Is it possible to ignore JPG files on import? I shoot raw + JPG and see no reason to keep the JPGs; I shoot JPG primarily as a backup (I back all the JPGs up online to my smugmug account then delete them before importing the raw files), but they're also occasionally handy if one wants to get a quick print in the field. I know that one can set a preference to "Treat JPEG Files Next to Raw Files As Separate Photos", but even then they still are imported.
As an example, say I have this scenario (not on DSLRS, but on pNs cameras, sometimes a JPG but not raw is captured - I suspect this has to do with how the buffer is filling) with these files on a memory card:
    IMG_0001.JPG
    IMG_0001.CR2
    IMG_0002.JPG
    IMG_0003.JPG
    IMG_0003.CR2
When I import pictures from this folder, I'd like 2 CR2 files and 1 JPG to be imported. I'm even willing to copy the relevant files and drag and drop them onto LR's Library module. But even if I do that, all five files get imported. Thanks!

For this typical example 98% of the image files are transferred while LR is building previews, which is exactly what I was suggesting be avoided.
No, I don't believe that's correct. As I said in my previous post, Lightroom's Import is a two-stage process.....first copy the files from the card, then when that is finished, render whatever previews have been requested.
AFAIK there is nothing unusual about my system, Lightroom has always imported in this two-stage way as far back as I can remember. Based on this I see no 'safety' benefit from copying files first outside Lightroom, then using an ADD import process. On the contrary, as this takes away the possibility of using the "Second Copy on Import" option, as well as having to manually setup import folders, I see nothing but downside from that approach.
Mea culpa, Jim is correct! I checked my Windows 7 system with LR4.2 and I monitored the 'Destination folder' during an import direct from memory card to hard drive. 'Copy and import' showed in the progress bar until all image files were visible using Windows Explorer in the 'Destination folder.' Only after all files had transferred did the progress bar change to ‘Render 1:1 Previews.’ I started using LR1.0 on a Pentium 3 single-core system with Windows XP 32 bit, which I think is when I made this observation. Regardless, it is clear that LR4.2 is using a two-step import process. Thanks Jim for being persistent!
It still begs the question why some people are experiencing very slow imports, damaged image files, and other related import problems from memory cards? My guess (and it's only a guess) is that they have 1) 'Rename Files,' 2) 'Automatically write changes into XMP,' or 3) 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files' checked in LR preferences. It would be a good idea for anyone experiencing import issues to try an import with these three (3) options unselected.
My apologies to the OP DBarman for going off topic. Hopefully the extra information and observations are helpful.

  • Date and time of photo files in PSE 10

I imported about 1000 photo files (JPG) into my catalogon my desktop PC from files that I had saved on my laptop PC while on vacation.  Most of the files were imported with no problems, but some of them were saved with the wrong time and date information.  My folders are named for the date the pictures were taken, e.g., 2012-03-12.  A few of the files were in a folder inside a folder for a different day, "c:\users\Don\My Pictures\2012-03-12\2012-03-08".  What causes this?  How can I get PSE10 to work porperly?
    I have Windows 7, 64-bit PSE10, and an HP-PC with 8GB RAM.

Thanks for the reply Brett N.
I read some previous posts on date problems, and one answer said that if the import was done outside PSE10, all bets are off as to the correct results.  That made me remember that I copied the folders and files to my desktop PC using Windows Explorer and then PSE10 found them as new files.   I assume that my problems were because of not using PSE10 to import the files.
I am going to mark your reply as the correct answer, and give up on this issue until the next time I import files.
