Location service question

If my location is turned on,  does this mean anyone who has my mobile number can ask Siri and know where I am?

No. Of course not.

  • Compass / Location services questions??

Will my compass be correct and work with the location services turned off? Also, how much of a battery saver is having the location services turned off? I have heard both sides, some saying it helps a lot and some not so much.

Very miniscule power saving. Cellular connection, WiFi, "No Service", using the phone connection, and using data all drain the power more than the GPS since you use that more than GPS.
So turning off location services won't save you power. It's up to you though.

  • How do I start a petition so that I can name my Siri? Also I would like to bring to question the fact that when using British Siri you can't utilize the location services. Why?

I love Siri. It's useful and fun and I love messing with it but why can't I name it? It's sort of a petty thing but I would like to be able to name our phone companions. Also apple kinda needs to fix the location services thing with the other Siri voices :) thank you.

    Send apple feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
What do you mean by the location services thing? As of iOS 6.0 us brits can use Siri to search for location-based stuff.

  • Question about the Location Services feature

I have the iphone 4A.  How can I prevent the Location Services feature from coming on by itself after I turn it off?

Hard to really say without testing.
I would assume since there is a prompt to verify that it holds ids of txt to remove prior to saying yes so shouldn't get new ones.
    Can always test.
Start a thread with yourself (eg: mail you txt email addres...for att users it is [email protected]) thus you can start a conversation.
Then try clear option. Wait when it says are you sure. Then send another txt from computer. Wait to hear that it showed up, then confirm clearing.

  • HT201365 I recently lost my iphone 4s, ios 7, find my iphone on, location services off, icloud shows device offline. Personal Information in iphone(pics, docs) compromised? Please Help.

    Hello,
I recently got my iphone stolen. Its a 4S with IOS 7. Find my iphone was on. Location services were off. After stolen, went to icloud find my iphone, device was listed but offline. I put it in lost mode and a message. Put a passcode too. It said lost mode pending. After several hours, put it in erase mode. Now it says erase pending. Unfortunately there was no passcode for home screen when it was stolen.  I called my iphone several times, it went straight to voicemail. I did not report the iphone stolen yet because i want my device erased. It does not erase if no internet.
My question is this. If the iphone was turned off, can they turn it on, disable cellular data (wifi was off before stolen) and still browse the iphone with no internet connection? Pictures, notes, pdf files, text messages being accessed? Also, if they remove sim card, will activation lock still work wirth no cellular data or internet connection?
    Thank you for your help.

If the iphone was turned off, can they turn it on, disable cellular data (wifi was off before stolen) and still browse the iphone with no internet connection? Pictures, notes, pdf files, text messages being accessed?
Not if you had a screen passcode set, no, they can't.  If you didn't set a screen passcode, then they can most certainly get into your iPhone and access your information.
Also, if they remove sim card, will activation lock still work wirth no cellular data or internet connection?
Activation Lock will remain no matter what they do to the iPhone.
    Regards.

  • IP address range of Microsoft Location Services API

    Hi,
I am developing a LOB windows 8.1 application. The windows 8 tablet device we are using needs to be locked down by IP address to the specific services that the application will use. I have not been able to find the IP address range for the Microsoft Location
    Sevices API uses (Windows.Devices.Geolocation namespace).
Does someone know where on the MS website this sort of information is held as I can't seem to find this information anywhere?
    Thanks

Probably you can find more information from here:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd464636(v=vs.85).aspx
As I understand system have a location service and when the app calls the service, the service query the location automatically.
If you still have questions about location service, perhaps ask at desktop forum is a better choice:

  • Will an iPhone automatically turn off location services.  If it goes below a certain battery power level, and so how you disable this in settings.

I am working with Georgia DOT and we have created an app to track our state vehicles using IPhone 5. My question is: will an iPhone automatically turn off location services?  If it goes below a certain battery power level, and if so how do you disable this in settings.

I don't believe that this will happen, however, the entire iPhone will shut down when the iPhone reaches the auto-shutdown power level. There is no way to turn that Off other that connecting the iPhone to power.

  • Even with restrictions on location services for icloud turn off

I have been on the forums a b-jillion times looking up this same question. Our phones (hubs and I 4 and 4s) continually turn off the "find my iphone" bit in location services. I have locked it in restrictions after turning it on-passcode locked it. I have tried everything multiple times and yet it still happens on both of our phones, though his more than mine! Now my phone is gone and I put an erase order in almost immediately as it was taken out of my car. It says it will happen the next time it is connected to the internet. I check icloud often...nothing. Then, fifteen days later someone is using my facebook acct! It still doesn't show up on icloud as ever erasing or connecting to the internet!! What the.....?

Hi there I was having the same issues myself an I know it can be a pain because its a real battery drainer. The tip I have that worked for me is I went to location services and one by one I turned off each individual apps location service until the arrow went off so I was able to quickly find the app that was causing the issues (allow about 5 or so seconds between each app after you turn if off) after you find the bad app you can go into that apps settings to try to fix it. Or for me the app never stopped searching my location even with the app fully closed. ( so I deleted the app ) I hope this tip helps out

  • TS4006 Find my iPhone app is not coming up in location services

On my new iPod when you go into PRIVACY > LOCATION SERVICES there is a list of apps that can use location services. In the list the app FIND MY IPHONE which I have previously downloaded does not come up in the list. This means that I cannot turn location services on for the app find my iPhone I cannot find my iPod on the app if I needed to.

@kaityjade, did you find this out? I have the same question. if you did can you please let me know how you did it.?

  • HT1975 Some of my apps and iphone info tells me to go to "settings" and in "settings" go to "location services" to enable apps such as a golf app to use gps .  When I go to "settings" there is no option called "location services". Why not?

Some apps and iphone info tells me to go to "settings" and in "settings" choose "location services".  Under settings on my phone there is no "location services". What's up with that?

Pick the appropriate link for the version of iOS installed on your device.
FYI, the iPhone 4S never ran iOS4 so the link from which the questions was posted is not relevant to your device.

  • IOS 8 Location Services

In iOS7  a user could set location services to standby/disable when the app was minimized.  Apple has taken this feature away for most applications.  Now you only get two choices ("Always" or "Never").  When set to always, an application like Waze or Trapster and many more will use your position EVEN WHEN THE APPLICATION HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE tray.  When set to NEVER you have to go in and manually turn it back on to use the applications' location services, then off again when done.   Not only is this an personal invasion of privacy, it causes the excessive battery drain.
Question: Am I missing a setting that will allow me to disable location services when the app is not in use in iOS8?
Please join me in spreading the word and in making sure apple knows they need to re-enable the ability to disable location services in iOS8 when the App is not being used.

Try this.  I had a different problem but it might help:
settings --> privacy --> location services
scroll the the very bottom and click on System Services
now try disabling/enabling the services in here.

  • Using iPod location services to find my way round new places

I  like to use location services with map apps (such as OffMaps and MapsWithMe) to help me find my way around new places.
I understand that the information  ipod uses for location services,  the positions of various wifi transmitters,  is stored in an Apple database and that the location result is likely to be very approximate.  My problem is that I  cant figure out how and when the relevant data arrives in my ipod.  Typically it seems that when in a new town,  during my first wander round the place, the ipod does not know where it is -  locations will not be shown on these map apps.  On subsequent travels through the town iPod does seem to know where it is and displays its location on the maps quite nicely.  (But by then of course I  too know my way around and so don't need theiPod;s assistance so much to help figure out where I am.)
    So my questions are
    1) At what point does the ipod get to store the crucial location information?  I'm wondering for instance whether the ipod remembers the SSIDs  as it encounters them, but only learns about their locations when it  is next connected to the  internet?
    2) I'd like to know how much of this information the iPod can remember and for how long is it remembered.  (If I go back to a place visited last year will any of the previously "learnt"  locations be remembered by the iPod. I may well have forgotten my way round the place by then and the iPod's help would be useful)
    3) Is it possible to "teach"  the ipod about  known wifi locations in a particular geographical area before visiting the area.  That would be a tremendous boon to me.

Good questions. However, I have never seen or heard about any information from Apple about how the iPod (and wifi-only iPad) really determine location.  I am waiting for answers from other users.

  • What is Motion Calibration used for? Found in Privacy Settings : Location Services under system services?

I have found that my battery was using up charge and that Location Services Icon in top right corner to the left of the battery icon was on most of the time. Once I went to check what application is using it turned out to be Motion Calibration Tab that had a purple asterik next to it. Once I disabled it , my battery stopped draining.
My question is first of what is this feature for? Secondly does it have to be turned on in order for the phone not to loose its full functionality? As it seems to be working just fine without it been tuned on and I have not any apps that stopped working properly so far! And thirdly if in deed it's a necessary service does it have to be on all the time which is a definite battery hog, or is another bug in IOS 8, that needs to be addressed by Apple team ?
    Thank You

Did you try privacy> location services> tap location services, you should get Safari.

  • Location Services and battery explanation!

Ok, so many of us are uncertain regarding leaving Location Services ON because of the battery life problem.
I will explain the issue here so there will be no more questions about this:
When enabling Location Services you authorize the usage of the GPS unit on your phone. Below the LS switch you will see other switches regarding the applications that were using the LS in the last 24H. So the question is: Does the LS drain battery when leaved ON but no apps are using it? The answer is NO!
When you use an application that has the option to get your location it will ask for your permission to use the Location Services, if you will deny it it will not use the GPS unit, and so no power will be given to the GPS to function. Try to think the Location Services as it's name says so: a Service: When an application needs GPS information, the service powers up the GPS unit, when no application needs the GPS it cuts the power off from the GPS unit.
Do not compare with the Bluetooth! When using bluetooth, to be always discoverable the BT chip needs to be powered up all the time.
Think this as a somehow "standby" mode, the Location Service is listening in the background for requests for the GPS unit, when needed it powers it up, when not it powers it down.
You shouldn't be noticing more than 1 or 2% drain because of this service being enabled, nothing noticeable.
So it's ok to leave the LS ON as long as the apps using it are not enabled to actively use the service.

Either one. When you see the white/purple arrow on the top, an application you are using has enabled Location Services for itself. While the app is running in either the foreground or background, LS continues to run until the app is either closed or has been force closed through the multitask bar.
LS only uses battery life when it either picks the GPS or the cellular towers to continuously ping your location. But the LS doesn't use as much power as believed. It's actually a combination of things such as GPS and Internet and Music or GPS, Internet and Camera.
Most people keep the LS running as it does little harm to battery life. Some turn it off or turn off certain apps to protect their privacy as they are broadcasting on a social network their approximate location such as LOOPT to friends that you are in a restaurant.

  • Location Services & MDM

My company recently rolled out the ability for us to access corporate resources such as email, calendar, WIFI, and VPN on our personal iPhones using a product called MobileIron.  MobileIron administers profiles that include policies such as mandatory passcodes and backup encryption, etc.  This all worked great and I was impressed with the ease of use.  However, I noticed that the MobileIron application continuously was using the phone's location services.  This raised a privacy flag, so I banned the application from using location services.  Doing this caused my device to go "out of sync" and my IT department told me that location services were a requirement to be able to access these corporate resources.
My question is why would this application need access to location services in order to provide me with unrelated services such as email and calendar?  I understand that MobileIron is an implementation of Apple's Mobile Device Management platform, so does this platform require location services to be enabled in order to remotely administer my device?  Are there any legitimate security / management reasons for this requirement?

Actually using location services is the only way to validate if a system is jailbroken. Apple used to have these restrictions in their MDM environment but no longer cares about jailbreak validation.  Yes MobileIron solely uses location services for detetcing jailbroken phones.  It can also be used to locate lost ot stolen phones but that is not the reason it is required.  The sole reason is for the jailbreak detection.
I completely think this is more than appropriate for a company to monitor any mobile devices that have their proprietary and intellectual property or undisclosed information on said devices.  If you want to use your companies exchange/lotus servers they should also have the ability to locate, wipe, sever ties to their mail servers in case of theft, termination of employment etc.
Why shouldn't they have a right to control their data at all times?  Even if it is a employee owned device, if it has an exchange profile for that company then they have the rights to monitor and access that data whenever they choose.  Seems pretty logical.
The real beef should be with Apple for the horrid battery life location services causes.  They should also provide the API's necessary for detecting jailbroken devices and the other various consistency checks needed in MDM.  That would be a good median to both sides of this discussion.
