Location service weirdness - GPS / wifi locations

I currently live in Hong Kong and seem to get some interesting & irritating locations on the Maps application.
I am located at 1 of the 3 locations randomly from my apartment:
- Tokyo Japan (same apartment I lived in when I was in Tokyo last year)
- Mutan Pakistan (I assume a neighbor of mine was living in Pakistan with his wireless router and has since moved to HK)
- Hong Kong (when it works it is quire precise)
Anyone know how to zap the 'bad' data from Skyhook's database?

I have a half-dozen apps that rely on Location Service. I went through several weeks of Intermittant operation before I figured out what's happening.
My router is in an upstairs bedroom. If i'm downstairs, Location Service works maybe 25% of the time althiugh the WiFi data signal is rock solid and my Internet access is flawless. After much weeping and gnashing of teeth, I've confirmed that the only RELIABLE way to make it work is to take the iPad to the room where the router is located. Apparently, the Location Service information is carried on a different (weaker) radio signal than the WiFi Internet data.
There is one thing that I still don't understand. How does the router know where It is? This is a DSL router that's on the subscriber end of a telephone line. It has no GPS circuitry. Worse, it reliably identifies my location incorrectly (although close enough for my purposes). I live at house #7 but Location Service always pinpoints me at house #1 a hundred yards away. Can anyone explain what's happening?
The location service is not carried on any weaker radio signal. It uses the same WiFi as any other transfer to and from your router.
Location services knows where you are from the MAC address of your router and other nearby routers. These MAC addresses are registered in a location services database with their physical location. The database was constructed by WiFi access point locaters which have driven through neighborhoods gathering data.
Location services may work better upstairs because, at that location, your iPad can probably locate other nearby routers which are in the location services database. There may be a know router in house #1 or nearby. Your router itself may not actually be in the database yet.

  • Geotagging (GPS) services with iPad WiFi?

So my question is: if I enable the Personal Hotspot (tethering) on my iPhone and I connect an iPad WiFi to the iPhone, I can start surfing with the iPad, and this is nice. But which are the disadvantages compared to an iPad 3G?
    - during surfing with the iPad, I also use the iPhone's battery
    - I also use the amount of downloadable MB/GB available for my iPhone
Other disadvantages? Can I ask the iPad to show my position in Maps?

If you are moving, it will be virtually impossible to use a GPS service and maintain access to wifi on iPad alone.  If you have a wifi only iPad, there are ways to add a consistent wifi hotspot to your iPad.  One way is tether an iPhone to your iPad (you need a tethering plan from your carrier, if offered and at additional cost), or you could purchase a Mifi (a portable service which you can take with you anywhere like an iPhone to power your iPad's data connection.  Mifi's are sold by most major carriers and come with monthly data plans.

  • Integration of Oracle field service with GPS

    Hi,
Is Oracle field service 11.5.9 integrated with GPS (Global Positioning System)?
    If 'No' any work around?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Field Service Dispatch Center has Map feature using which a Dispatcher can get a GIS map display of the assigned work, along with the Plan Board and Gantt chart views.
Mobile Field Service Wireless for PDAs has the ability to get driving directions (with a map display) between the assigned tasks. Further, a Field Service Technician can receive directions between any two addresses.
    Hope this helps.

  • E90, GPS, WIFI

I got my E90 a couple of days ago,but over the last month or two I have been reading this and another couple of forums to try to get ready for the big day. My question is, can I use my WIFI to start using GPS? I checked with my IP (Fido) and the cost of wireless internet is Can$12 per Mb (pretty high). I remember reading somewhere from someone some steps to take to use WIFI to do this. But I can't find it again. I have looked at Nokia Maploader, but I cant get it to work with Win 2000 or XP.
    Thank you in advance

Not sure what you meant but yes you can use wifi to download the maps to your card. I would recommend this actually.

  • BB 9330 - turning off mobile network data services causes BIS WiFi connection to change to not connected

    re: v. 6.0.0.719 bundle 3084 platform 4.4.0.560 update
    1. History.
    a. Received BlackBerry Curve 9330 out of the box with bundle 2333 installed (but missing Verizon Visual Mail Message app.) Installed BB Desktop Software on laptop, connected smartphone to PC, Attempted to install bundle 3084, but initialization apparently failed, phone still showing bundle 2333 installed and no VVM app. Browser app unable to connect to network. On second try was able to complete 3084 install. Still no VVM app. Now some times the browser connects, sometimes it does not. Browser not connecting appears to be BB software bug. VVM issue appears to be one for the service provider.
    b. Data service is currently Verizon BlackBerry Social Messaging Data Package which is suppose to have BlackBerry Internet Services via WiFi per Verizon FAQ doc.
    2. Problem. With an active WiFi connection the Browser app is not connecting via WiFi giving a error message that WiFi service is required.
Investigation found if mobile network data service was turn off in Mobile Network Options, the BlackBerry Internet Services connection status was changed from connected to "WiFi" to "not connected". Browser appears to work ok when mobile network data service is turned on. BIS connection to WiFi comes back on. Not sure at this point if web data is going via mobile network or WiFi.
I am wondering if other BB 9330 Verizon users are seeing the same symptoms.
    Bill
P.S. I could not find where to report this apparent software bug. So I hope is the right place.

If you have your Mobile Network as well as Wi-Fi turned on, your phone will default to the Wi-Fi for browsing (assuming you have a strong Wi-Fi signal).  Leaving both on will allow you to browse as well as receive calls and texts.
    I hope that helps you.
    - If my response has helped you, please click "Options" beside my post and mark it as solved. Clicking the "thumbs up" icon near the bottom of my response would also be appreciated.

  • Curve 8520 still no data services, but working wifi..

    hey,
I was just wondering if anyone else was still having an issue with their data services folloing this RIM issue?
I'm from the UK but currently  visiting in the states, so roaming is turned off, however prior to the RIM issue I had no problems using my blackberry services (eg. bbm and email etc) on wifi. However, now it has started to connect to wifi again, and the icon turns white, and some apps such as twitter and whatsapp have started to work, howeer i can still not use email or bbm...
is any one else still having these issues? I have tried multiple hard resets (battery pulls) and tried re-connecting it to my computer and updating it... still nothing..
Please help.. it's driving me insane!

I dont have a data plan (work phone) and can get internet through wifi, and have done so without any issue.
check 'Menu', 'Manage Connections', Wifi is ticked, with network name in Green
check your using Hotspot Browser, (you did say this, I know).  So it definately says Hotspot Browser at the top of the browser when open rather O2 Active (or similar)
I'll keep looking to see if there are any settings I can find which could help

  • S6 IPSec Service Storage and WiFi Calling

    Hi,
Can any other S6 owners tell me the storage size of the IPSec Service application.
Then can you tell me if you have wifi calling enabled.
I am getting the run around between EE and Samsung as I think there is a data leak in the wifi calling.
My IPSec Service application is taking up 5.16GB and there is no way to clean this other than a phone reset.
    Cheers

Same issue, ipsec service is growing.I've got Wifi Calling enabled.

Normally, the signal strength is great where I am. The downloads are always fast too. And right now, there is nothing else in this house that is turned on which should be causing any type of interference. I only have my cell phone and computer turned on. I do hear some kind of modulating energy type sound coming from outside. Would this be it? None the less, I have created some WiFi diagnostics which can be downloaded from https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2wbE3EVNff3fnEyREE0YV9qZXlJSy1NM05FZDQ0 UVBSamdDUmhZaVR3aFdxNXRqaXJnTzQ&usp=sharing
How can I find a resolution to this? That modulating sound is kind of making me feel really agitated and uncomfortable and I have no idea where it is coming from. I am wondering if it is the cause of the WiFi lag too? If so, what can I do about it? I am not sure where it is coming from.

  • Have full service 3g, no wifi bluetooth

im having a problem with my wi-fi and bluetooth. they will not connect at all. i do have full 3G network and full carrier service. but my bluetooth will not work, and my wi-fi will not work. its killing me, does anyone know what my problem is with the phone? possibly a hardware piece?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?
If none of the above resolves the issue then it's time for a trip to the genius bar.

  • I updated to iOS 8.0.2 (the one supposed to fix the cell service issue) and now I have ZERO cell service. Only wifi.

    How can I fix this?

I have this same problem.  Visited 2 ATT tech supports, Apple Store, Tech support, other Apple tech support persons.  Changed SiM card twice.  Did multiple resets, full restore, IOS 8.0.2.  Wifi works fine.  Safari says it can not connect to server (WiFi off).  Hotspot continuously trying to connect.  Can't get to ATT ADN info.  No one has seen this.  They believe the phone is damaged but I believe this is a IOS 8.0.2 BUG.
I did 3 hour google search in multiple forums trying to see if someone has seen this.
Various similar scenarios but all were corrected by doing Network Reset.  This does not work.
So far have spent 18 hours working this and finally decided to go to Iphone 4 using SIM adapter.
Had to go to Iphone 4 and set it up for now.
    Anyone else???

  • What if all the location services and wifi is set on, and a thief steals an ipad4 (wifi)

    SITUATION GOES LIKE THIS.
    IN THE PARK,
    IPAD4(wifi) STOLEN  NOTE IPADWIFI ONLY.
ALL LOCATION SERVICES ARE ON ----------------- WIFI IS ALSO ON BUT NOT CONNECTED TO ANY NETWORK!!!
IM SEARCHING FOR MY IPAD USING FIND MY IPAD
ON ENTERING A WIFI ZONE WILL THE IPAD AUTOMATICALLY BE VISIBLE ON THE MAP IN FIND MY IPAD????? AND CAN I NOTICE IT?????
    PLEASE ANSWER ME ANYONE.....

You need an active internet connection and the iPad on to be able to find it though Find My iPad may report it's last know location if with a certain period of time (some have said 24 hours). A WiFi-only iPad therefore would show it's last know location (if known) or need to be connected to a hotspot to see it's current location.

  • Ok why doesn't find my iphone have a selection to turn back on location services? it only makes sense in the case that whoever stole ur ipad will turn it off.

ok so first off my ipad was stolen, it was all my savings since im a college student attending uci and now the art institutes. my ipad was stolen the other day and the first thing the culprit did was turn of location services. i had find my iphone installed and running and everything but they turned it off. there should be an update for find my iphone to turn location services back on in this case. or is it that apple is so money hungry even after making billions that they wish for me to buy another one as if im made of money? seriously? apple claims to take care of their consumers, yet i get the run around and so do thousands of other apple fans when it comes to stolen property, **** it should be part of ios to take advantage of the gps, wifi signal, cellular signal etc. to trace a apple product yet it's not even on apple's todo list? some customer service.

Sorry for your loss, but had you put a lock code on you iPad, the theif would not likely have been able to go in and turn off location services to begin with.  The sad truth however is, once an iPad/iPhone/iPod is stolen, it's pretty difficult to stop someone from getting away with it.  It's not Apple's fault and they can't be responsible for theft.  It's just a sad testimony to our society........And while your blaming Apple for your loss, just remember that No, Zero, Nada, electronics manufacturers get involved in theft.  Nor do cellular providers.  Theft is an issue for the police, not the manufacturer or service provider.
