Location Services - Always Active ?

I saw a post on here saying that when not using GPS, maps etc you should go in and turn off location services, as otherwise it is constantly active and tracking your phone therefore reducing the battery.
Does anyone know if this is right ? Does manually going in and turning off location services everytime help preserve battery life ?
Thanks !

This isn't true. the gps is only used during active use, ie, using google maps and hitting the locate me button, or using a 3rd party app that requests your location. It is not continuously active.

  • Location Services Always on in 7.1?

Does anyone else notice that the little 'Location Services' arrow at the tope of the screen is always on after they updated to OS 7.1? Does this mean more battery life will be drained?
I have tried closing all of my open apps and re-starting the phone but it is still on.

Try going to Settings > Privacy then tap Location Services - then try to off one by one, then u can findout which app is using the location service even in offline mode,
my case "Tango" using Location Service always even it is in offline mode.

  • Location services always on issue

Why is location services on when all my apps are closed?
I have "frequent locations" turned off.
I noticed that all of a sudden the location icon was on when all my apps were closed. I went through my apps turning off location services individually trying to find the culprit. At first it was Siri because as I went through the location icon went away when I turned Siri's off. I searched for some solutions in the Apple forum and found that I needed to turn location services off, reboot phone, and turn services back on. Well when my phone turned back on the locations icon was back! So I went through the rest of my my apps and moved on to "system services." As I turned off "traffic" the icon went away again. I'm wondering why all of a sudden the location icon is on with traffic and Siri when they were closed? These are settings that I didn't recently change. Siri and traffic have had location services on for as long as I can remember but are all of a sudden running location services in the background. Is this a known bug? What can I do to fix this?
I have used Siri a few times over the past couple days and this is the first time I noticed that the icon was on. Same with traffic, I used maps 2 days ago but the location icon hasn't been on until now and NO APPS WERE OPEN OR HIBERNATING! I've known location services to run my battery down so I would love some help on how to fix this issue. Thanks.

  • Location Services always ON with Auto Date/Time/Timezone ON

iOS5 lets you see the Location Services (LS) indicator in the Status Bar when system services are using LS in addition to when apps are using LS. I turned this ON (Settings > Location Services > System Services > Status Bar Icon) and immediately saw that "Setting Time Zone" was using LS.
I went into Settings > General > Date & Time and saw that "Set Automatically" was ON. As soon as I turned it OFF the LS indicator disappeared.
Does this mean that LS is always ON when you've got auto Date & Time on? It looks like that to me...
Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether this is an iOS5 bug or whether it's always behaved like this?
    Thanks
    Tim

    Hi All,
I checked my friend's IPHONE 4S. Date & Time->Set Automatically  is set to ON and in Location Services-> Setting Time Zone is set to On but it does not use GPS regularly but my Phone does I have tried everything Setup as new, erase all setting, reset all settings, reset network settings and restore from BACKUP. My Problem is persitent. The Only difference I notice in my mobile and friend's mobile is that he bought from Saudi Arabia and I bought from Australia (though it has been swaped by genious bar). He is using Telstra and I am using Vodafone. both has 9A406.
Hard to figure out what is this?
    Thanks

  • Location services Always on or when in use?

I have an iPhone 5S running OS 8.3.1
Trying to learn as much about using Siri and the services as I can to be able to maximize my use. What I ultimately want to know is. How does Siri know where I am if the location service is set to, "when in use" for maps, and for find my friends, instead of always?
This came about when setting reminders up for, "remind me when I leave home to take out dog." for instance, or "remind me when I get to Hy-Vee to get Dr. Pepper". If the map is not always on, how does Siri know where I am? Is this going to fail? or not work? Do I need to leave the map on all the time?
    Thanks

Location services gives the current location to the app that requests it.
The process looks like this... independently of the map.
Siri launches and requests location, GPS chip processes location data from the cell tower and wifi networks.

  • Siri-location services always on please help!!

On my iPhone 4s Siri has been on with location services enabled since I got it. Out of the blue the purple arrow next to my battery bar apeared and will not go away this means my phone is actively using location services which drains my battery faster . In settings it says Siri is the only thing actively using location services. How can I use location services without having the purple arrow constantly being there and only being there when I use Siri for something that requires location services

Ok that was a no go. But I previously had an issue where Siri couldn't connect to the network.  On another forum I found the fix which was to:
    1.  Turn Off Siri - Location Services (Settings > Location Services > Siri > Off
    2.  Reboot the phone
    3. Turn On Siri - Location Services
I did that just now and Siri has not used LS once.  Then again, I haven't tried the, "How do I get home" command with Siri yet.  It's a quick fix...for now.

  • Why are my location services always on

I have an issue with my location services in ios5 with my Iphone 4.
There is a purple arrow always on for the Seeting Time Zone option (even when in airplane mode).
It seems to affect the battery even with the recent upgrade.
If I turn this option off, then over night my clock is set one hour later than the correct time.
Please let me know if any of you have similar issues, and if you have any solutions!
    Thanks.

Yes but then as I stated, my clock goes off by at least one hour (usually in the middle of the night leaving me to depend on an old alarm clock). To fix this, I then would have to do a manual set up for the date and time, and then it really starts to feel like a dumb phone rather than a smart phone. Surely, this is a bug that needs to be addressed?

  • Does "Location Services" always drain the battery when enabled?

    Hi,
I've read lots of things that say if you want to save battery power, disabled "Location Services".
I find it annoying that on the odd occasion that I want to use Location Services, say, to find an ATM near where I am, I have to go into settings and enable it, and then go back into the app I tried to use, and go and enter my search again, etc.
Now, I understand that if my phone is actually trying to find my location, that is should use some power.
But my question is... If I have Location Services switched on, and I am not actually using any app that is trying to find my location, does my phone actually use any more power than if Location Services is disabled?

    Tamara wrote:
It does not use extra power to have Location Services enabled if you're not using the app.
I leave Location Services on all the time and I have decent battery life.
I agree that having location services on doesn't use battery unless an app is using it. Now none of us can say for sure about that since we don't know the software/hardware and how they talk/work and as the other poster said, powers the GPS chip. Just because the service is on, for all we know the OS only powers on the chip then "when needed"
From looking at the "Optimize Your Settings" from http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html They say:
Minimize use of location services: Applications that actively use location services such as Maps may reduce battery life. To disable location services, go to Settings > General > Location Services or use location services only when needed.
While for WiFi/Bluetooth, etc they say turn off, not just minimize use of "applications" that use it. That is because WiFi and Bluetooth have to actively beacon/probe while the GPS only has to do something when requested.
    Just my two cents though.

  • Location Service always on

I did the update to iOS 7.1 last night and Location Services won't turn off unless I shut it down completely.  It used to be that if an app was using location services, I would force close the app and GPS/Location Services would turn off.  Now, even if I force close ALL apps, Location Services continues to run.  I don't want to have to go to Services > Privacy > Location Services and turn it on every time.  That's ridiculous and makes apps using Location Services not worth using.
Does anyone know if there's a way to get back to the way it was prior to the update or if Apple is going to fix this?
    Thanks!

Mine was yahoo weather as well. I just deleted the app. I have so many other weather apps.  But same here you guys. I close every app from running in the background and the location icon still comes on (Draining battery life)... I think its part of this updated iBeacon and what they call a geofence?
    I dont like it.

  • Location services always running?

With regards to location services on the iphone, if enabled in the settings is the phone sending data all the time, or only when an app calls upon it? Is it updating every minute in the background or something, ready for when needed maybe?
I have read the support article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1975
"Location Services is on by default, but you can turn it off if you don't want to use this feature or to conserve battery life. You can also individually control which applications have access to Location Services data."
I don't really want it going all the time if it's recording my position when I don't really want it to. Then again it's a bit of a pain having to "enable" it everytime I want to use maps or something.

Yes, the device does not need a network connection at all to get a gps fix. However, it should get a fix faster if it can use a 3g connection (triangulate off the cell towers) or wifi.
In the absence of any data connection at all, it will use the satellite signals only, which may take longer, and may not work if anything obstructs your overhead view. Also, in the absence of a data connection, the only included app that would be useful with GPS is the compass app. Otherwise, you will need to get an app that stores it's display data locally on the iPhone itself. Anything like maps, mapquest, and so on is going to need a data connection to stream map data so it can display your GPS information.
Keep in mind there are two things going on here. One is, can the GPS chip in your device compute a location fix with either the available satellite signals, and/or the cell tower connection, and/or a wifi connection.
The second thing is, the GPS "fix" is just some numbers stored in memory - you need an app to actually display that data in some informative manner. Any map display app will have to get the map data from somewhere - to overlay the GPS data onto so you can see something within the app. If that display data is not already stored on your iPhone, then the app will need a data connection, or else it simply has no context to display the GPS fix.
So, the ability of the GPS to determine your location is independent of having some app to display that data in some meaningful manner.

  • HT201493 What good is the notify button when Find my Friends doesn't allow location services always? Only will notify you when the app is on and then you can already see them...

aanyone found out the best way to use this feature of the app? I want to be notified on the lock screen but I can not get that to happen at all

    I have found the solution.
In order for person A to be able to click the 'notify' button to be alerted for person B
Person B must be signed into the same icloud account they are using for find friends.
You can't be using one apple ID for icloud and another apple ID for find friends.
It appears this service uses iCloud for the geofencing side of things.
I have tested it on my iphone 4 & 5.
Please let me know if this solves your problem.

so i actually ended up walking into genius bar today. they couldn't figure out which program was causing the glitch either, but the way they solved it was by resetting all the location service permissions altogether. for those of you who want to know how to do this, navigate to "settings > general > reset > reset location warnings". also fyi, the apple service rep told me the purple location service icon next to each app simply signifies that particular app has requested your location within the past 24 hours, not necessarily that the app is active. hope this helps those with the same problem as i had.  iPhone 4, iOS 4
I will mention that I did not have the problem until I downloaded the new googlemaps, which I have deleted off my iphone.

  • Location always active in status bar?

Why is the location icon always active in the status bar at the top of the windows phone start screen? does anyone else have this issue on there Nokia Lumia 920. This is ridiculous and what i believe to be the culprit in the battery draining issue i am experiencing with this phone.

  • Problem with Location Services in Flight Mode

    Hi!
Several times before it happened, that the Location Services symbol appeared in the status bar during Flight Mode and only disappeared several minutes after leaving Flight Mode. Up til now this never posed a problem as I usually plug in my Z10 over night.
Yesterday before going to bed I had 30% left and thought, that this would be sufficient to survive the night and that i'll plug it in in the office. Alas, I was woken up at arround 6am by my phone turning itself off.
When I looked at the Device Manager i found something quiet startling: During the whole time Flight Mode was active (approx. 23:00 - 0600), Location Services where active as well, draining the remaining 30% of battery. (See pictures)
My Device is a Z10STL100-3, OS is 10.2.1.3175.
No App was running nor was an Active Frame open.
Does anyone have a clue, why this happened or what caused this? Anyone with similar experiences?
And more important: how can i fix this?
    Kind regards,
    Uwe

I saw a resemblance to a user in the Spanish forum mistake is perhaps as happens on the foursquare application was always working and location feature enabled.
