Location Services, could someone use it wirelessly to find where I am?

Hi,
I have an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1.1. My "Location Services" is turned on and so is my "Cellular Data". My question is, could someone use my "Location Services" feature wirelessly and find out where I am at the moment? If not then why is the pruple arrow appearing next to my battery icon at the top bar all the time, except ofcourse when I turn this feature off or when I turn the wi-fi and the cellular data off. This is problem started on June 13. Since that day it comes and goes. What makes me think that someone is spying one me is that when I go to "Settings" then to "Location Services" a list will show with all the apps that might use this feature, I usually allow all my apps to use this feature and the thing is when an app is using this feature at the moment or at a past time a purple or a gray arrow appears next to that app. It is not appearing next to any app and still there is a pruple arrow in the top bar. Please help I am afraid someone is spying on me.
Thanks

I found out what was using my Location Services. I went to "System Services" in "Location Services" and there were six system services that use location service. One of them is "Setting Time Zone" and that what was using the location services and still using. I just don't why now it is using it the whole time. Anyway I just wanted to let you know. Thanks for your time and effort.

Could someone tell me how to find purchase date so I can register my Airport extreme on the Apple Support Profile page?

Unless something has changed, the Apple does not provide a specific support warranty for their AirPort products. Instead, typically, you would get this type of warranty only if your purchased an Apple desktop or laptop at the same time and the AirPort would be covered under that one.
If you bought the AirPort directly from Apple, they should have a copy of the receipt. Otherwise, if you used a credit card, check with your card provider.

My ipod was stolen and I was trying to track it via icloud but they've disabled the location services. Will they still receive my "Find My iPod" messages?

If they disabled services, then they disabled Find My iPhone (if they're smart), so you won't be able to track it and/or wipe it.  Messages won't work either.

how do you see the items that are backed up to iCloud -  I have 4.5 GB that I have used but I cant find where to see those items...help

That is everything in your iCloud account.  Videos and camera roll photos are only included in your backup, the size and content of which you can see on your phone in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage>tap the name of your device under Backup.  This will show you the size of "Camera Roll", where these are contained.  (You can't see any detail beyond that.)  Photo stream photos can only been seen in your photo stream album on your phone, and they don't count against your storage so they aren't part of the 4.5 GB.  Everything esle is either in the backup, the items listed in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, or on icloud.com, where you can see your contacts, calendars, etc.

  • IOS 8.1.2 Location Services constantly being used

There is a bug with 8.1.2 and I am not sure where to report it.
Location services is constantly in use.
The System Services settings I disabled were apparently reenabled with the iOS 8.1.2 update and this is killing the battery on my iPad 3.
I have a solution but really this should not be happening in the first place so where do I log this bug?

You can see which app is using location services here: Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
Apps with a purple arrow next to them are using your location services.

  • Signed in at two locations? is someone using my account?

Both my dad and me have the same error message about being signed in at two locations when we are not. We are also in different countries, signed in only once or indeed not at all.
I have googled this and see the error message is very old.
    Any experiences out there?
    The text is:
Your Screen Name ([email protected]) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 2 locations. To sign off the other location(s), reply to this message with the number 1. Click here for more information.
The more info link is this one:
    http://info.aol.co.uk/aim/password/routing.htm
Just to be clear: we are NOT logged in twice by any means we are aware of.
I am wondering if it has anything to do with dot mac syncing as my username "goes online" to do that of course. Though I'm not sure how ichat comes to be loaded even then - again not knowingly by me. Of course dot mac (now me) is nothing to do with AOL screen names. As far as I know.
    This is an old symptom.

aha. Now that's interesting. In my the case of me (not my dad), I do not have ethernet and wireless, but I do have multiple wireless networks (3) as well as multiple VPN's (2). So perfectly possible that as I switch between these iChat notices a change of interface. What I can't understand now, is how iChat is loaded in the first place.. checking prefs now... result: I cannot see a pref that says to load iChat at startup or indeed at any other time. Probably just can't see it for looking since this would explain how come iChat is loaded and I am surprised. I have no idea it is running until I see the "double logins/two locations" message.
My Dad. He has only one system - I'll check with him in case he is running ethernet AND wireless. He doesn't know the difference, so just plugs everything in and it works Quite possible his Wanadoo box is offering wired and wireless at the same time via dhcp.
If that is the case then I have only one question left: how is iChat loading up and that's going to be easy to answer (apart from me with my blinkers on just now).. so answers very welcome please.
Never ceases to surprise me where these threads lead. In this case it looks like "locations" == "network interfaces " - well, why don't they just say that ?

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Location Services Getting Used A Lot

I recently went into my Location Services setting and noticed the "System Services". It looks like these are the items that use Location Services other than the apps that a user downloads. I turned on the option that allows me to see when the System Services are using Location Services and now I notice that theyre using my location a lot.
I saw the location icon on one time while texting and noticed that it wasn't turning off. I went in to check what was using it and it turned out to be Traffic and Frequent Locations.
Is this normal? Are Location Services actually being used a lot? I'm guessing this is why there's an option whether or not you want to see when the System Services are using your location.
The main reason I'm wondering is because I want to save my battery as much as possible...

Yes; just use the maps app (or google maps). Drop a pin at the starting point, then later you can request directions to that pin. Be sure to switch to walking directions.
But you should also have a backup plan, as you would with any activity in a risky environment.  Like taking sightings on recognizable landmarks or using other survival techniques that you have probably taken classes in. You need to be prepared for a dead battery, dropping the phone, getting it wet, etc.

  • Recent update affecting location services

So my Galaxy S3 did a firmware update two days ago, and now Google maps location services isn't working. Even though I have all location options checked, it still won't find my location, and prompts me to enable said services. Has anyone else noticed this issue?

Me too. Didn't there use to be a charge for these services? Maybe that was VZW Navigation. I never saw a point to that when Google's Maps and Navigation were free.
As usual after major updates, it seems that defaults need to be re-selected. I went to navigate to a location last night and was asked whether I wanted to do it using Maps or VZW Navigation, and of course selected the former and made it the default. So it is possible to have GPS/VZW location services turned on without being forced to use VZW Navigation.
Suspicious as I can be of Verizon's motives, I don't think they can really charge us for location services without our explicit permission. I do note this, however, from p. 169 of the original S4 manual (back when you had to give explicit permission for VZW location services):
By selecting VZW location services, you are enabling Verizon Wireless and third-party authenticated and validated location-enabled services access to certain location information available through this device and/or the network.
I would have to assume that that data gathering is taking place every time we use GPS now--and without our explicit consent. Has anyone seen anything from Verizon that has a bearing on this?
OTOH, p. 170 of that manual has the following about the standalone GPS service that used to be listed separately from Verizon location services:
By selecting Standalone GPS services, you are allowing access to all location information by any third party through web access or any software or peripheral components you choose to install, download, add, or attach to the device or any other means. Enabling this functionality could pose certain risks to users of this device.
If anything, this sounds even scarier! But in the present state of affairs--since no updated manual or help ever comes with a software update--we have no idea who is collecting location data or what they might be doing with it. Not cool, to say the least!

  • Location Services vs. Time Zone Settings

i am being given advice to turn OFF Settings > Date and Time > Time Zone Tab > "Set Time Zone Automatically using Current Location" - presumably so that when i travel all my events stay at the time that i set them to. for instance in the case of a return airline flight, so that the alerts will alert me at the correct time.
right now - i think - that if the Time Zone updates and i am traveling east (say from CST to EST) then the phone changes all my appointments in Calendar and they all show up an hour LATER than when i originally set them. this way i miss my flight.
however, i am not sure if there are consequences to this.
also, i can't tell if i should also change the Settings > Date and Time > Date and Time Tab > and UNCHECK "Set Date and Time Automatically".
also, i am getting uber confused between the settings on my phone as compared to those on my MBP or on Calendar. Location Services i think is a iPhone specific setting whereas Calendar > Preferences > Advanced > "Turn on TIme Zone Support"
anyone licked this so that it all works?

    hi braden.
i have tried this "empirically" a couple of times by traveling to another time zone but i was basically testing to see if i can get this to work. the first time i did this i did not get the alert that i set because something had gotten adjusted and the time of my event that i had set had gotten "pushed back" - i think basically due to the time change between CST and EST. this is a problem since when i travel it is helpful to have the alerts on my phone. right now i am having a hard time figuring out why it would not be the case - given the explanation in your tech articles - that this won't happen again if these settings are on. conversely, if i turn oen or both of them OFF - it is not clear to me what the consequences are.
there is such as thing as a "floating" event which is supposed to (i think) alert at any time zone at the time that you SET the event - so that it does not ADJUST based upon your traveling to a new time zone. however, there appears to be a lot of confusion as to whether this works and/or to what extent it has limitations.
for instance, is this a viable way to get calendar to work across time zones? i mean, the articles you helpfully post don't seem to address how this works from a practical perspective.
    here are my settings.
    MBP:
Settings > Date and Time > Date and Time Tab > Set Date and Time Automatically (currently set to ON)
Settings > Date and Time > Time Zone > Set Time Zone Automatically Using Current Location (currently set to ON)
Calendar > Preferences > Advanced > Turn on Time Zone Support (currently CHECKED)
    iPhone
Settings > General > Date and Time > Set Automatically (currently set to ON with “Time Zone” showing as Chicago)
Settings > Mail, Contacts > Calendars > Time Zone Support (currently set to Houston)
Settings > Mail, Contacts > Calendars > Time Zone Support > Time Zone Support Slider (currently set to ON)
    1. do i need to do anything special when setting an EVENT while i am in CST (for instance) but the event is going to happen while i am in EST? i mean, can i just set the event with these settings and leave it as CST?
    2. do i need to MANUALLY adjust my iPhone and MBP - once i arrive in EST - to show up as CST in order to get the alert to go off at the correct time?
    3. do i need to MANUALLY pull down an event to "FLOATING" any time this event will happen outside the time zone i am in?
    4. are there any limitations to using a FLOATING event? i know one cannot set a floating event from the iPhone but if this works and this is the only limitation i can do this method.
    5. i have heard some people resolve this issue by MANUALLY setting their time zone for their "home time zone" and they TURN OFF time zone support on all their devices so that the events happen at the correct time with no time zone adjustment. does anyone know if this method works? does anyone know if there are complications to such a move - for instance if i was to work in another continent for a period of time it seems like you would have to change your time zone and this would affect all previously entered events. but also i cannot figure out if doing this will let the TIME on my MBP and my iPhone read correctly since this is very important to me.
sorry to be posting on this but this is very difficult to test and threads such as there indicate there is a lot of ongoing confusion about this.

any thoughts? or perhaps there is someone that has travelled recently and has this down to a science?

  • Location services when abroad

I am currently abroad in Canada from the UK, and want to use location services but only using wifi not to use the data/cell tower information as this costs extra money on my contract plan.  Any ideas?  I have turned data off, so if I turn location on will it only use wifi to find my location?
    Thanks
    Andy

Hey Andy, I actually am a fellow canadian in Prince edward Island! In order to connect to wi-fi, you need to be in a wireless free public wi-fi network, I believe that starbucks and McDonalds provide these access points! if you also try some cafe's they also have some wi-fi connections available to the public. Otherwise, you may have to use your Data plan!

  • Location services not working after iOS 6 update (WiFi only)

After updating my iPad (3 & WiFi only) to iOS 6 the location services no longer work. This stops some apps from working. It was fine before the update. Does anyone have a fix for this yet? I know others have been having the same problem.

Before IOS 4 iPad and iPhone used Google and Skyhook databases for position info. In April Apple switched to using it's own in house database for location services. In the past one could register the MAC address and position of a router or access point with Skyhook and within 2 to 3 weeks any device with location services could find itself. Now with Apple handling it's own position database and no way to register an access point or router it is hit or miss as to whether an iPad or iPhone can find itself using WIFI only. If you live in a rural area you are less likely to have location services work. Hopefully Apple will emulate Skyhook in future by allowing users to register their access points or router's location in their data base. Until then those of us in rural areas are out of luck. Cheers

  • My iPad location service is wrong

My iPads map and other location services list me as being about 590 miles away from my actual location, but my iPhone when disconnected from the cell signal an using the same wifi as my iPad, gives me dead on accuracy. Any thoughts or ideas?

Yep.  WiFi location services is iffy at best.  The database that houses router info is a deep dark mysterious secret.  Your iPhone does not use cell signals for location services.  It uses GPS signaling directly from the satellites.  So there are THREE possible wireless signals - cell, GPS and WiFi.
The WiFi-only iPad and the iPod Touch do not have GPS circuitry and both rely on the presence of nearby WiFi routers.  It does not matter if they're actually sending/receiving data through the routers and it also does not matter if the routers are locked and inaccessible for data.  The only thing that matters is that they're within range.

  • TS4006 Find my iPhone app is not coming up in location services

On my new iPod when you go into PRIVACY > LOCATION SERVICES there is a list of apps that can use location services. In the list the app FIND MY IPHONE which I have previously downloaded does not come up in the list. This means that I cannot turn location services on for the app find my iPhone I cannot find my iPod on the app if I needed to.

@kaityjade, did you find this out? I have the same question. if you did can you please let me know how you did it.?

  • What is the point of Location Services?

I have an iPod Touch and some Apps keep asking me to switch this on. What is the point and will it drain my battery?
    Thanks

Having Location services turned ON enables the Apps to determine your location. You can restrict access to only those Apps that you wish to have it (See Settings > Location Services). Some useful ones might be Google Earth, Maps, news sites, etc.
Location services should not significantly affect battery life.
