Locator or Spatial?

Please excuse my ignorance but I need a clarification. We are running Oracle 10g and I'm new to using the spatial technology. I am able to successfully create and populate a SDO_GEOMETRY column in a table and generate a spatial index. How do I know if I'm using the Locator or Spatial product? How do I ensure that I am using only the Locator product?

you can check it in the oracle spatial user guide.

besides,
if you don't have Oracle Enterprise and Oracle Spatial licensed you should install oracle without oracle spatial.

  • Locator not spatial in intermedia?

    We need a way to test if we are using locator or spatial. Can you install Locator without Spatial, for example by installing Intermedia and no Spatial?

    Hi,
    In 9.2, the difference is in what you are allowed to use, not what is installed. The complete set of spatial functionality is included, but with locator you are only allowed to use a subset. The products may be differentiated at install time at some later date, but currently you have everything.
    In standard edition you should only use locator functionality.

  • Oracle Locator or Spatial?

    Hi,
    I'm trying to decide if I can do the following with just Oracle Locator (with Oracle 9i), or if my organization needs to purchase Oracle Spatial. I have a web page where a user drags out a rectangular area of interest on a web map, and the values identifying this area are inserted into four variables - minlong, maxlong, minlat, and maxlat. The user can then query a database where the records contain coordinates defining rectangular areas. Using just Oracle Locator, is it possible to search this database and return only those records whose coordinates fall within the area of interest defined by the user? I am brand new to Oracle, but this seems pretty basic, and I'm almost sure that Locator can handle it, but I want to make sure before buying the Oracle license. Sorry I can't point you to the web page to see what I mean, but it's only on our development server.
    Any help would be appreciated thanks.

    Hi,
    If you are using Oracle9i you can do this with locator. Before Oracle9i this required spatial.

  • Study of feasibility with Oracle Locator or Spatial with personal

    I need to store and retrieve spatial data in a GIS software. However, this software runs on a stand alone platform, that is to say a single computer without any network.(Pentium + Windows XP)
    Can I imagine to embed Oracle Database personal + spatial module in our software or would it be cost prohibitive for my customers ? (Peharps Dev. partners is a solution ?)
    Thanks in advance,

  • Location of spatial tables and warehouse tables - recommendations

    Hi all,
    I have a question from a customer who's asking what the recommendation is of storage of the spatial tables and the warehouse tables.
    Should they reside on the same database for best performance or doesn't it matter where the spatial tables are located.
    Is there any official recommednation from Oracle on this?

  • Oracle 10gR2 - Is it Spatial or Locator?

    I'm trying to determine if a 10.2 database is using Spatial or Locator.
    I've checked out this other recent thread:
    Oracle is Spatial or Locator?
    On the DB I'm looking at, I only come back with a reference to count is Spatial (and nothing for Locator - which I think is what it is really using)
    I did some more digging and I found these to manual pages:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/statviews_3114.htm (10gR2)
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14072_01/server.112/e10820/statviews_3180.htm (11gR2)
    And the difference being, that 10gR2 doesn't list Locator at all. From what I understand, Locator is just a subset of Spatial, and was split out in 9i or 10g, and specifically licensed for Standard Edition.
    What I'm wondering is if in 10gR2/10.2 if Oracle hadn't split out Locator from Spatial in dba_feature_usage_statistics until 11gR2. And if, so how can I really tell whether the DB is being used for true Spatial or just Locator.
    If you can point me to any oracle documentation saying one way or another, that would be helpful too.

  • Spatial or locator ?

    I'm a bit confused !
    How to see if I'm using the locator or the spatial component ?

    I think it just depend of the functionality you are using.
    For example for using georaster in 10g, you must buy an Oracle Spatial license.

  • Can both Locator & spatial store three point curves or arcs?

    1) can both Oracle Locator and Oracle Spatial store three pint curves or arcs?
    2) Can both Oracle Locator and Oracle Spatial receive input of bearing / distance to creat a line segment?

    hmmm, i got this exact question in mail today. someone is double-dipping!
    Both Locator and Spatial allow storage of three point circular arcs. Circular arcs are only supported in non-geodetic coordinate systems.
    In Oracle 10g Release 2 both Locator and Spatial include a function called sdo_util.point_at_bearing. If you enter a point, a distance, and a bearing (in radians) we return the end point. With the end point and the original input point a line segment can be contructed very easily.

  • What are the requirements for Oracle Locator?

    Hi, when installing a new database, we want to trim out the stuff that Oracle installs by default that we don't absolutely need. However, we do want to make use of the MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY type and Oracle Locator (not Spatial).
    Oracle has all these different components, and we jut found out that in order to use Locator, you have to install Oracle interMedia. Is there anything else there that Locator has a dependency on that we would be missing? We intend to install these:
    Oracle Workspace Manager
    Oracle Enterprise Manager
    Oracle Database Catalog Views
    Oracle Database Packages and Types
    But out of the list of the rest of them, what is needed for Oracle Locator?
    Spatial
    Oracle interMedia
    OLAP Catalog
    Oracle XML Database
    Oracle Text
    Oracle Expression Filter
    Oracle Rules Manager
    Oracle Workspace Manager
    Oracle Data Mining
    Oracle Database Catalog Views
    Oracle Database Packages and Types
    JServer JAVA Virtual Machine
    Oracle XDK
    Oracle Database Java Packages
    OLAP Analytic Workspace
    Oracle OLAP API

    Oracle Locator is implemented in the MDSYS userid. (It's included in every version and edition of the database since 8i, including 10gR2 Express Edition.)
    As you have noted, Locator is considered part of intermedia. (In some versions of Oracle, Locator is officially a feature of intermedia, in others it seems to be independent. In all versions, it uses a commono install with intermedia.) The install for intermedia 10gR2 is described at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14302/ap_instl_upgrd.htm#sthref649
    I believe there are some Locator funtions in 10gR2 that are impemented in Java and require the JVM. The 10gR2 Express Edition (XE) does not include JVM and Locator seems to be mostly functional, but there are areas that do not work.
    Technically you do not need Oracle Text or Oracle XDK/XMLDB. I've found they are extremely useful so I do include them in my minimum installs. They are also included in XE.
    In your list the following are related to separately licensed EE options: Spatial, OLAP and Data Mining

  • Oracle 11g, Locator, and 3D data, part 2

    All,
    I'm trying to decipher the differences in the Locator vs Spatial functionality for 3D data in Oracle 11gR2.  I found the archived discussion:
    https://community.oracle.com/thread/2566650
    In this discussion, the answer was that using the SDO_RELATE and SDO_ANYINTERACT operators on 3D data with a 2D index was covered under Locator.  My assumption, then, is if I have 3D data with a 3D index and use the SDO_RELATE operator, that is not covered under Locator and I would need to pay for the Spatial licensing.  Is that correct?
    Can I assume that if I create a 2D index on the 3D data, then I'm safe to use all the functions in "Table B-1 Spatial-Related Features Supported for Locator" in the Spatial Developer's Guide?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    According to the following (for 11.2):
    Oracle Locator
    Those would all be covered by locator. A few more items were added to locator for 12.1 if you are (will) use that instead:
    Oracle Locator

  • Spatial Database Upgradation

    Hi,
    We are upgrading our exisiting database (9.2.0.8.) to Oracle Database 11g R2, it has got spatial and non spatial data, i need to know best approch to migrate the database.
    Thanks !!

    Your best bet would be to use DBUA to perform the upgrade, and to test/verify thoroughly on a test system before touching production. These MOS Docs may also help

  • Getting started with Spatial

    Lets say I have
    create table cust_address
    zipcode varchar2(5) not null,
    create table zip_details
    zipcode varchar2(5) primary key,
    latitude number,
    longitude number
    );How do I go about letting Oracle Spatial loose on this data? So that I can join my cust_address table with this zip_details table, pick up the lat/long and ask location-aware questions using the various Spatial features?
    I am very new to Spatial so step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Vikas,
    Take a look at the following tutorials and documentation:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14255/toc.htm
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gdb/content/spatial/spatial.htm
    These should give you a good idea about how Oracle Locator and Spatial work.
    As for your current table setup, to "spatialize" it, you can simply do the following (assuming you are using Oracle10g - for 9i and earlier prefix the SDO_GEOMETRY type with it's owner MDSYS):
    1) Alter the zip_details table and add a column of SDO_GEOMETRY type:
    SQL> alter table zip_details add geometry SDO_GEOMETRY;
    2) Next, update the spatial metadata view with your user defined table/column information.
    SQL> DELETE FROM USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA
    WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'ZIP_DETAILS' AND COLUMN_NAME = 'GEOMETRY' ;
    SQL> INSERT INTO USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA (TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, DIMINFO, SRID)
    VALUES ('ZIP_DETAILS', 'GEOMETRY',
    MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ARRAY
    (MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('LONG', -180.0, 180.0, 0.05),
    MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('LAT', -90.0, 90.0, 0.05)
    8307);
    COMMIT;
    3) Now, populate the newly created geom column with the latitude and longitude data.
    SQL> update zip_details set geometry = SDO_GEOMETRY(2001, 8307, SDO_POINT_TYPE(longitude, latitude, NULL), NULL, NULL);
    SQL> commit;
    4) Finally, add a spatial index for this "layer" of information:
    SQL> CREATE INDEX ZIP_DETAILS_SIDX ON ZIP_DETAILS(GEOMETRY)
    INDEXTYPE IS MDSYS.SPATIAL_INDEX;
    5) You now have a sufficiently "spatialized" data set that you can use to query for interesting information like whom are the closest customers to a certain longitude/latitude within 100 meters:
    SQL> SELECT a.name
    FROM cust_address a
    WHERE
    SDO_WITHIN_DISTANCE(a.geometry, mdsys.sdo_geometry (2001, 8307,
    mdsys.sdo_point_type (-73.94, 40.66, null),
    null, null),
    'distance=100 unit=meter') = 'TRUE';
    or whom are the closest customers to a specific zipcode (94065) within 5 miles:
    SQL> SELECT /*+ ORDERED */
    c.name
    FROM zip_details a, zip_details b, cust_address c
    WHERE sdo_within_distance (b.geometry, a.geometry, 'distance=5 unit=mile') = ‘TRUE’
    AND a.zipcode = c.zipcode;
    AND a.zipcode = '94065';
    Hope this helps. For more information and training, please check the training page (http://www.oracle.com/technology/training/products/spatial/index.html) and the new book, Pro Oracle Spatial (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/spatial/htdocs/pro_oracle_spatial.html).

  • EPSG and Oracle-Spatial

    In the spatial documentation we find:
    "The Oracle Spatial coordinate system support is based on, but is not always identical to, the European Petroleum Survey Group (EPSG) data model and data set."
    The EPSG data set is updated regularly, i.e. new coordinate systems are added and so on.
    The current version of EPSG is 6.17.
    Which version of EPSG is used in which Oracle Database Release (10.2.0.2, 10.2.0.4, 11.1.0.6)?
    Where can I find this information?
    When an Oracle patch set is published (e.g. 10.2.0.3 upgrade to 10.2.0.4), does this patch set include updates to EPGS-data or include a new version of EPSG data set?

    Sean,
    Yes, this is possible with Oracle9iAS Wireless. You can configure Oracle9iAS Wireless to retrieve data from any location provider (Spatial or others) and have wireless apps access and utilize the info. This can make applications location aware, provide routing information, output maps, etc. Take a look at the first sample on this page to get started: http://otn.oracle.com/sample_code/tech/java/wireless/content.html.
    You can also get much more information from the documentation: http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/ias/doc_library/90200doc_otn/wireless.902/a90485/lb_chapt.htm#1004903

  • Uninstall Spatial?

    Have Oracle Enterprise Edition with Spatial installed on one of our development servers. This server is being switched into production. However after completing development we have decided we do not need any Spatial functionlity just Locator functionlity. So will just be getting an Enterprise Edition license without Spatial (as we are using partitioning). Is there a way to disable the spatial functionality. Do you uninstall the Spatial option via Universal Installer or will this remove MDSYS and Locator aswell or does it just disable the Spatial components leaving the Locator and MDSYS schema unaffected. Is this safe with spatial tables and rtree indexes already in place.
    Thanks

    While you have Enterprise Edition for the Partioning option I can see why you want to uninstall any of the additional Spatial options to ensure you don't deploy additional cost options to a production environment even though your production code does not use any of these options.
    I had a look at the Universal Installer and it is not clear to me either whether ticking the appropriate box will leave you with only Locator or remove Locator+Spatial entirely!
    So, I can't help you, other than to experiment with the installer on my database.
    I suggest:
    1. Logging a call to Oracle support asking for the approved, official method.
    2. While waiting for 1, try it on a PC which doesn't have Oracle on it to see what you get. One would think that if one has only Locator then a "Describe mdsys.sdo_geom" should tell you if you have Locator vs Spatial as Locator shouldn't have SDO_UNION and other geoprocessing functions.
    Of course, in your $ORACLE_HOME there is the md/admin folder with the installation (and de-installation) scripts. But unless you had clear instructions from Oracle support on which ones to run to achieve your task one would not recommend hacking up a solution using these scripts directly.
    Let us know how you go as I am interested in how to do this as well.
    regards

  • Error in MDSYS.CS_SRS table

    Hello. I'm new to spatial. We are using 10.2.0.4 database, standart edition, under RHEL5. So we use Locator, not spatial. Now I need to move database to brand new, 10.2.0.5 server, same OS. When I do schema import through datapump, I got an error:
    ORA-29855: error occurred in the execution of ODCIINDEXCREATE routine
    ORA-13249: SRID 294914 does not exist in MDSYS.CS_SRS table
    ORA-29400: data cartridge error
    So I check MDSYS.CS_SRS table on new database, it has for some strange reason only 15 rows. The old database's same table has more than 4000 rows. May I recreate this table and how ? Are there any other tables I must to check ? Maybe it's better just to recreate the database, because it s not yet production ?

    Thanks for the reply. Sorry I was out of town for a couple of weeks and this issue is still out there pending.
    What's the procedure for defining a non-standard coordinate system number? Does it have to be done by the DBA or a developer could do it himself?
    Thanks in advance
