Lock button irreparable, £200 replacement(!), options to complain?

My iPhone was purchased from Vodafone and is out of warranty. The lock button is completely broken through wear-and-tear (I am using the Accessibility workaround). I was told by an Apple Genius that it cannot be repaired, and all they could offer was a £200 refurb phone.
That's ridiculous! If you are going to build a phone which can't be repaired, then should you can also be flexible on replacements.
Who can I complain to? - I don't see a complaints department listed.
I've spent a small fortune on Apple products in the last 20 years, but my brand loyalty is not absolute!

Apple provides a 1 year warranty on all new devices sold.  They also offer the purchase of a separate Apple Care (or Apple Care+ depending upon your country) which will add a second year of coverage to your device.  If you purchased the extended warranty feature, then your phone would be covered for a second year.
This seems like they are very flexible in that they allow you to chose if you want to have the extended coverage for a second year or not.  Your choice to not purchase it was just that, your choice.  Your phone not having warranty coverage now, is just a side effect of that choice you made.

  • How much does it cost to replace a lock button?

My iPhone 4 is second-hand, as it used to belong to my boyfriends dad. It's quite old but I can't afford a new phone. The phone itself was dropped into a river by accident, so obviously the lock button doesn't work - everything else work fine. It locks and unlocks itself, and sometimes comes up with the "Slide to power off", as if the lock button is being held in. How much would it cost for my lock button to be replaced?

Sorry, Apple does not sell iPhone parts, nor do they fix damage like yours. Instead, they replace the phone. Cost is US $149.

  • My iphone stopped working, and I can't just hold down the power and lock button at the same time, because my lock button doesn't work?

So usually when my iphone would stop working I would just press down on the lock and home button, and then the Apple logo would appear.
However, my lock button stopped working a while ago..
If I go to the Apple store can I get them to fix my lock button, without deleting any of my phone content?

Apple will not fix the lock button, they will replace the phone for $149. You should back up your phone so you can restore its content to the replacement. If it doesn't show up in iTunes, hope you have a previous backup on your computer or iCloud.

  • IPhone 4 has collapsed lock button and Wifi no longer working. Replacement?

Hello and thanks for any help in advance.
Recently my iPhone 4's lock button collapsed and it is now longer functioning. In reaction to this I visited the Genius Bar and they informed me that it could not be repaired and that I was required, due to my warranty being up, to pay £120 for a replacement. This was as much as I expected at the time. However, shortly afterwards the wifi connection stopped working and my iPhone can no longer sustain connection outwith 2m from the router.
I then phoned my insurance company with this problem, and they informed me that I willbe unable to claim for a replacement as it is a manufacturing defect and not damage. Despite my warranty being up, is there any grounds for argument that such a hardware defect, outside of my control, is reason to claim for a free or reduced price replacement from Apple?
I am unsure where I stand. I have had this phone since May 2011 and it seems ridiculous that a phone that comes with a 2 month contract cannot last, without accident, for the same duration.
    Thanks again,
    Jamie

The device comes with a 1yr warranty when purchased new, that's it.
Whether there is one or multiple problems with the device is irrelevant.  The fact that a hardware failure occurred outside the warranty period is also irrelevant.
    Your options are:
    Live with it.
Pay the Out of Warranty cost to get a replacement unit
    Purchase a used device online
Purchase a new device at full retail cost.
Apple has nothing to do with and did not force you to sign a 2yr contract.  The vast majority of users never have a hardware issue.  The fact that your device has experienced two hardware failures is merely a fluke.

  • There is no option to reject an incoming call in locked screen, there must be an icon on the screen for one who don't want to use lock button several times, i did'nt face this problem in last ios 6.1.3.

A good read. Have you done anything at all to resolve your problem. Reset? Restore?
By the way - "your products"... nobody here produced the iPhone, we are all just users. Apple is not here.

  • The lock button on my iphone 5 is broken and I want to replace it at an apple store but I haven't paid my phone bill for AT&T so my phone has no service. Can i still replace my iPhone 5 whether or not i have to activate my phone with AT&T? Help please

Earlier i meantioned that my lock screen was broken. That was a mistake its my lock button i apologize. But do i still have to pay for my phone bill and activate my AT&T account in order to replace my iPhone 5 at an apple store?? Or not because of the one-year warranty??

The lock button on my iPhone5 has also started acting up. Extremely annoying. I have to get it replaced, but I've dropped my phone once and there is a scratch on the top left corner of the phone, so I'm not sure what the warranty says about this situation.

  • My iPhone 4 lock button broke, will Apple fix/replace it for free under the one year warranty?

I've had my iPhone 4 for just under a year now and a couple weeks ago the lock button broke. At first, it was just difficult to press down and now it's just completely stuck. I've been using the assistive touch but it's kind of a hassle. I still have a few days left of my one year warranty, so if I went to the Apple Store would they fix/replace my phone for free or would I have to pay? Also, I was having issues with my speakers previously so I went to get it fixed and they said my phone has water damage and I would need to pay to fix it. Will the water damage effect them fixing my lock button too or is it different? Any advice/guidence is greatly appreciated!

If there is water damage then they will likely conclude that your issues are a result of that and you will have to pay.
But don't ask us, ask them. We're users and this have no idea what Apple will say in your case.

  • HT4623 Can you get your phone replaced if you have a broken lock button

I dropped my iPhone today at school and the lock button stopped working. If I take it to an apple store will they replace it?

Remember, damage is NOT a warranty claim.  Dropping an iPhone would fall under an insurance plan.  You could check and see if your homeowners policy would cover it.

  • Hi i have an iphone 5 the screen in broken the lock button is not working and now the phone wont charge do u think warranty will cover my phone for a replacement or no?

    HI so to be clear
    screen cracked
    lock button isent working
    wont charge
do you think apple will still cover this under a replacement warrenty?

Depends how that happened and how long the warranty is still left .....u can replace the screen ...and does the home button work? If so then go to settings> general> accessibility >assistive touch( it has many functions like locking the screen ,screenshotting just by touching the screen
    Hope this helps

  • Locked button & switch for volume is broke also back is cracked , can i get my phone replaced for free ?

my lock button and the switch to turn the volume on & off is broke. also the back of my phone is cracked. i know apple doesn't replace cracked phones so would i have to pay for a replacement even though my lock button & the switch for the volume is broke ? if so , how much ? or would if be cheaper to just but a whole new iPhone ?

If your damage is caused by  accidental damage or intentional user damage, then you would be looking at an out of warranty repair.  I'm not sure what the costs of an out of warranty repair are for an iPhone 4, but they are probably in the $99-149 USD range.
The cost for getting a new iPhone would depend upon your current contract status.  If you are out of contract, you can get a new iPhone 4s (the next newer model) for free.

Warranty and support is only valid in the country of origin.  The only exception being the EU where a device bought in any EU country can get warranty or service in any EU country.
Warranty is determined by device (serial number), no documentation required.
Apple does not repair devices, they replace them.  For that reason, ensure the device is backed up and any pictures take with the device are copied off the device prior to going in for service.
