Lock folder on Mac, unlock on Windows?

I have a USB flash drive and want to lock a particular folder on the drive. I can use Get Info and select to lock the folder. Accounts on my Mac are listed in the Permissions section. What happens when I want to unlock the folder on a Windows Machine that doesn't have those Permissions? Will it just prompt and I put in the user name/password at that point?
I tried this on my Mac. When I click Locked, it stays check for only a few seconds before unchecking. So I can never lock. When I click Locked, I can see the USB drive light flicker for a few seconds. Do I need to do something else?

is the drive formatted FAT? if so the permissions are irrelevant as FAT does not understand unix permissions anyway. however, it does support some (but not all) unix flags including the unchangable flag that is set when you lock a file. however, there seem to be differences in the way flags are set in HFS+ and FAT which lead to some very strange results which I don't understand. I experimented a lot with them a while back with rather weird results.
when i created a file in OS X and put it on a flash drive i could lock and unlock it without issues both in OS X and windows. no password required. but sometimes (not all the time) some locked files from windows would absolutely refuse to unlock in OS X and some others wold refuse to lock! just as you are seeing. I have no idea what's up with that or what exactly cases this. the bottom line is. if a file refuse to lock or unlock in OS X there is nothing yo can do with it without booting into windows.
P.S. there have been many posts by others experiencing the same behavior. AFAIK, nobody has fond a way around it.

ITunes Library File in Documents Folder? Mac problem not Windows

I am confused!
I have several very small iTunes Library folders in my Music/iTunes file which date back to iTunes 4. Some of the files are less than 10kb. I also have a folder titled Previous Libraries in my Music/iTunes file which has two Libraries which are 768kb and 2.6mb in size. My main library which is 10.3mb was in my Documents folder which seems strange. I have now moved it to my Music/iTunes folder which is where I think it should be.
I am trying to tidy up what appears to be a bit of a mess. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How to Unlock folder or trash locked folder?

How can I trash a 'Locked' folder? I've tried to unlock it, but it didn't work. The folder actually came from a PC or windows.

I just traded my Macbook Pro for a 27" Core i5 iMac. I wiped the iMac when I traded and I brought it home to do a full reinstall. I booted holding the Option key down and noticed this iMac had a recovery partition I opted to use the recovery partition to reinstall. To my surprise it was Lion. And the cd was snow leapord. I was cool with that and signed in and used the computer all day. Then sometime while I was sleeping a obnixious alarm went off on the iMac and there was a box to enter your system lock pin code to unlock this mac.
Priding myself on doing all repairs on my own since my primary job is reinstalled and virus removal. Long story short I could not access anything no matter what I tried. I ended up calling apple care and asking what needed to be done they explained I needed to bring it to a apple authorized store and they would have to unlock the firmware.
Do you guys know what they are talking about or is there anything I can do before driving 100 miles to my nearest apple store. I find this rediculous.

I did indeed did wipe the system clean at the owners house, I went home with what I thought was totally clean hard drive, there was a recovery partition I did not see until I got home. This recovery partition was indeed tied to the original owner which I did not know at the time. I assumed it was like any old windows recovery and it was clean and made reinstalls a dream. Well long story short I had the snow leapord cd in the drive and ready to go until I seen this recovery partition and I opted to use the **** recovery and I reinstalled registered and signed into everything and used the computer all day 12 hours probably. By the way the recovery partition that was tied to this guy was lion.
So then I left the computer on and went to sleep. Late last night an alarm went off and that is when I saw the enter the pin to unlock this mac. I have tried holding the C when I boot up, I have tried holding the Option key when booting up. I have tried resetting the pram. Nothing can be done. I can get to another lock screen by phsically unplugging the power cord then booting up holding the option key. That will bring me to a screen with nothing but a lock and a line that I can type some kind of admin password. Nothing I have with work. I tried, root, admin, administrator, my password I used when I set lion up. Nothing!!!!!.
At this point this machine is more or less 100% useless, the only option I can see is to bring it to a authorized apple retailer and have them fix it. I did bring it to a local apple store. And they said they could probably fix it, but I would have to pay them between 50-100 dollars. The repair guy said something about getting the info from the ram. I just laughed and left.
Anyway this is like a BIOS lock, you cannot get to terminal, cd, to any boot options, you cannot reset anything at all. It's a full lock.

Yes there is a way to use the media folder with both OSX and Windows, however you have to have the drive formatted with windows NTFS and use something like Seagates NTFS for Mac program. If you buy a Seagate GoFlex Drive it comes ready formatted with the software on board to install on your mac, then anything saved on the drive will be readable from both OS.
I use a couple of these drives for just that purpose very successfully, unfortunately I haven't come across an alternative to buying the Seagate drive.

Have you tried an adminstrator password? If you have alllowed it to it will let you in through your Apple ID (Preferences Users and Groups).
Booting up from a recovery disk will allow you to get in...I think.
I once had a situation where I was asked for a pw which did not exist and I pressed "enter" and it worked.

My ipod classic 3 generation this morning was on lock, which it has never been since I got it. So I went online and found a way to unlock it. But unfortunately the only way to unlock it is to have a "locked" folder on my ipod which I do not have. How am I suppose to unlock it when the only way to is not there? Please help!!

There's no "New File" shortcut in Finder on Macs, so you have to launch the application you want (eg TextEdit), create your document, and save it there. There are workarounds using Terminal (the touch command), AppleScript/Automator, and using third-party launch programs like Quicksilver, but natively, it can't be done.

Question is did you lock your Mac from Find my iPhone using iCloud or is the Macbook really yours?
If you have in fact locked your Mac using Find my iPhone on iCloud then you will need to enter the PIN you have set when you locked the Mac.
*If you have not iniate the remote Lock then someone else has used your Apple ID and Password to lock your mac.

Cant view windows 7 shard folder on mac 10.6.7

I have a network in my home . i use time capsule 1TB and route my internet.
now the problem is i use to share all my PC drive in home network with mac but after i install 10.6.7 i cant find my pc shard folder on mac.
but still i can W/R mac shard file in PC windows 7.
in my network i have 3 macbook pro with 10.6.7 and 3 HP PC with windows 7
can anyone help me?

My recommendation, install the 64 bit Windows in order to use all your RAM, especially if you plan at any time increasing the amount of RAM to greater than 4GB. The only caution I have for you is that 20GB is way too small for Windows 7. Plan on at least 50GB or more depending on how much data you will have. 100GB will be better. I have 250GB Boot Camp partition and have used more than half of it without even trying.
I believe the installation instructions say to not use a wireless keyboard during installation. This is because you have to provide keyboard input during installation prior to the wireless keyboard drivers being installed.

Right click the hard drive icon and select Get Info. In the new pane, on the bottom, do this:
1. click the padlock, and authenticate with your password.
2. change Privilege to Read & Write - just click what is there and options will appear.
3. close the pane.
