Lock Icon on bottom of itunes

On my itunes there is a locked sign when i plug in my ipod. It is next to the eject buttons etc. on the botttom. The songs are also showing up gray and it says it is updating and then it says its finished but you can't add songs.

If you want to add songs onto the iPod manually, use these instructions to set the iPod to sync manually, and then move the songs onto the iPod in the iTunes source list. Doing this will also enable you to select individual songs on the iPod.

• Lock icon at bottom of iTunes screen when iPod connected and selected -grey

I'm a longtime Mac and iPod man trying to get ipod working for friend who has Dell laptop and XP.
Have downloaded and installed latest Windows software for both iPod and laptop.
Problem
iPod is recognised, but I can do very little with it in iTunes. Items get greyed out, iPod screen often returns to internal menus (that is appears as if iPod is disconnected) and strangest of all (for me ) is that a lock icon appears at bottom of iTunes screen in line where iPod capacity is shown. Have reset iPod, restarted computer, iTunes etc. no change.
Here's the thing - same problem when connected to my iMac G5!
Any suggestions welcome.

Got my answer from nice chap with a Windows machine!
It was because iPod was in autosync mode which I have never used myself since I have way too much stuff in iTunes.

• Lock icon at bottom & can't access my music from other comp.

I have noticed while using my iPod video there is a lock icon at the bottom of iTunes and it doesn't allow me to access my music while using other computers. how do i remove this feature so i can play mt music.

The lock icon appears when you iPod is set to automatically update.
Set it to manually update and you should be able to play the music from other computers.
Hope this helps.

• Song titles are greyed out, lock icon on screen in itunes

I'm trying to copy fies to my iPod through iTunes and it seems to be locked. It's successfully connected to iTunes and I see my iPod name/library, however all of the songs are greyed out and theres a lock icon near the bottom of the screen next to the Free 27.13 GB (lock icon next to that).
Is something wrong with my iPod or iTunes? Please help.

That is normal if you are set for auto-syncing the iPod.
If you change it to manual mode, the little lock icon goes away.

• When Ipod is plugged into itunes there is a lock icon at the bottom.

When I plug my ipod up to my itunes there is a lock icon on the bottom of itunes next to the amount of music (i.e. 6.5 days). My friends doesn't have that icon when he plugs his up to his itunes. How do I turn it off?

Manually updating is not as easy and takes away from the easy syncing from your computer to iPod.

Automatically updating is easier and better, in my opinion.

• A lock icon on my iTune

why there is a lock on the iTune next to the free space?
How can I take it off,'cause I can't control my ipod on this situation
does the restart can solve this problem?

The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manage the content manually.
Please note that by editing/changing the songs on your iPod in this manner, the changes will not affect the songs in iTunes, only on your iPod.

• Lock icon on itunes

when i plug my ipod into my computer, the itunes player comes up. my I.P.O.D. playlist shows up and at the bottom, the bar shows how much space is left on my ipod. next to it is a lock icon. im having trouble with my 2GB nano holding the 500 songs its suppose to. right now it will only hold 73 songs and ive converted all my songs to apple lossless. i was wondering if the lock icon has anything to do with my troubles?

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". . If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. For more detail see this tutorial: Managing Your Songs Manually
You won't get 500 songs a Nano on in Apple Lossless format, a file in that format is only about half the size of an uncompressed CD file which makes them typically 18-20 MB each. The numbers quoted by Apple for the number of songs an iPod will hold are based on a typical 3-4 minute song in compressed AAC format with a bit rate of 128 kbps. This is the default format by the way that is used for songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store. You will need to change your import settings if you want to regularly import CDs in that setting as.

• What happened to the lock icon at the bottom right hand corner?

When I would order items on line, I would see this lock icon at the bottom right hand corner of the window. I thought it meant the site was secure. Now I just see the fox head icon. I don't know if it's secure. Is it?
Nothing is wrong with firefox, but I don't know if this feature has been removed or moved elsewhere. It provided some sense of comfort seeing the lock icon on sites where I was ordering items.

In Firefox 4 and later you no longer have the Status bar that showed the padlock in previous Firefox versions.
The padlock only shows that there is a secure connection and doesn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server.
So you might still be connected to the wrong server if you make a typo in the URL and someone has claimed that mistyped URL.
The functionality of the padlock has been replaced by the [[Site Identity Button]] on the left end of the location bar.
• Locked Ipod, not accessible in Itunes

Let's get something straight first off: I have used Itunes before. Yes, I have made sure I've read the manual and all that prerequisite stuff that owners should do when they get a new product, so please, don't tell me to do the aforementioned.
The model Ipod I have is a BRAND NEW video Ipod, 30GB.
My problem is something I have not heard of before. I do not have any faith with anyone on support forums, because they neither give any good advice or, in most cases, don't reply at all. If anyone does manage to give me some sort of help, I will be immensely surprised.
When putting music on the ipod, there is no problem. When I go to the "Source" navigation to the left of Itunes, I click from "Library" to "Ipod (or, for those that aren'y intuitive, (insert iPod name here)", and all the songs on appear grey and I can't click on them, nor can I edit their properties etc. There seems to be a lock icon left of the information bar at the mid-bottom of the Itunes that displays how much data is used/free. Does this mean that my Ipod is somehow 'locked' and can't be accessed by itunes? If so, how the **** do I do so?
Also, I would like to know how someone would go about making sure their music is automatically converted to 128kbit mp3 when updating library to ipod. I remember with my Ipod Shuffle that there was an option in the "PReferences" tab to make sure that would happen, but I don't think there is one there in my version of Itunes (6.0.4.2). How do I do so?
If anyone is willing to help me, I thank you in advance and I really do appreciate it. However, if no-one replies, I understand - at least I can say I HAD faith in the kindness of humanity.

An amazing way to ask for help but then what do I know?

Managing Your Songs Manually
One thing to remember about manually updating though is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod
For info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.
"I would like to know how someone would go about making sure their music is automatically converted to 128kbit mp3 when updating library to ipod"
iTunes will not convert "on the fly" when updating the iPod. If you want to load it with a particular format (in your case MP3s at 128 kbps) then you have to have imported (or converted) your files in the format of your choice into iTunes first:

• Hi, I forgot my user password mac 10.9.4 I don't need it to log in but i need it to make changes, etc. It says a password hasn't been set for this account but it still asks for one when i click on the lock icon. can anyone help me? thx!

This is a little confusing since you say you have forgotten your password and then the system says you have not entered a password. Even with an Admin account you must have a password to install software.
If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 or above, you can change the admin password by restarting holding the Command and R keys, from the menu bar select Utilities, then Terminal. When the Terminal window opens, at the cursor type exactly:
resetpassword
and press Enter. When the Reset Password window opens, select the internal hard drive, and then the user account. Type a new password twice, leave the Hint blank, and then Save. Accept the next dialog that opens, and at the bottom of the Reset Password window agree to resetting the home directory permissions.
Quit the Reset Password window, go to the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart.
And you have a new password for your account.

• The old status bar showed a lock icon when on a secure site - where is that lock icon in vers 4?

The status bar was along the bottom of the window. At the right end of that bar, a lock icon would appear when you are on a secure site, like banking or bill pay. With the status bar now gone, where do I see that lock icon?

The padlock is no longer a part of Firefox; it can give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site. Familiarize yourself with the '''''Site Identity Button''''' in Firefox:

• Nano lock icon on, nothing works

Hello, I have a 8G 4th gen nano. It plugs into the computer and iTunes reads it, but the 'connected screen' is the only one that stays on after the language screen goes away. I can play songs using itunes controls. The battery icon says fully charged. When unplugged, it doesn't turn on. The lock icon is always on when connected and the trackwheel doesn't work. Have done the 5Rs and button toggling. Help?

Sounds like the locking mechanism has broken. You will have to get it serviced.
