Lock stroke width when scaling?

Hi,
Is there a way to make the stroke width of a shape remain constant when I scale the shape?
I find it frustrating that my stroke widens as I enlarge and thins out as I shrink the shape.

If you are using the layer scale that's expected since you are scaling everything in the layer.
The easiest way to get what you want is to use the "Transform Control Points" option for Scaling the shape.
-Switch to the edit points tool and select all the control points in you shape.
-From the Edit Menu select"Transform Control Points". This will allow you to rotate and scale the control points. Make sure you have all of the points selected.d
-At this point you can animate the scale (or rotation) for the shape and the width of the stroke will stay the same.
-Use this for all the scales you need to do with this layer.
Remember, as soon as you scale the shape at the layer level you will alter the width of the stroke.

Adjust stroke weight when scaling problem

Hello,
I am having trouble with the stroke on an object changing when I scale that object. I have already read to uncheck "Adjust Stroke Weight when Scaling" but my problem is that option is grayed out in my "Transform" panel. When I go into edit>menus, there is an "eye" graphic next to it so it should be showing. I am trying to figure out how to make that show up so that I can then uncheck it, resize a photo and keep the same stroke weight at all times.

Importing svg's stroke-width not scaled up

I am trying to import an svg in the illustrator, and it has stroke-width of 30px but its wasn't scaled up, its showing 1px of the stroke-width always, In preferences i have checked the option ' scale and transform the stroke-width ' and i have changed all the units into pixels. Still i am not getting that.

Thanks, Larry. On Mac and Win, double-clicking on the scale tool should also get you that dialog and the checkbox.

Why are my stroke weights not scaling?

I'm new to InDesign. Just installed it and playing for the first time.
I'm having issues with scaling the stroke weight of vector objects. I create an object or path, but when I go to scale it, the weight doesn't scale too. I've made sure that the 'adjust stroke weight when scaling' is ticked.
What am I doing wrong?

Stroke width wasn't scaled up when importing svgs in cs5

I am tried to open the following svg in the illustrator but it was not scaled the stroke-width of the text, even i have changed the units into px.
I am struggling a lot with this please help me. And its kinda merged svg from both illustrator and inkscape generated svgs.

Jagged lines when using Stroke Width Tool

Hello,
So I upgraded to CS6 and since then the stroke width tool does not seem to behave properly.
I sometimes, not all the times, get jagged lines when I try to adjust the stroke width.
Any idea what's causing this?

Looks like its duplicating profile points, but that may be entirely a precision error with your mouse clicks....

When drawing with the shape tool in Flash how can I vary the stroke width?

I created an oval shape and I'd like to vary the stroke width so it's not all just one uniform thickness. However in the Properties window I can only find the uniform stroke width and style options (solid, dotted, hashed, etc...). How can I add some tapering?

You probably need to convert the line to a fill and then change the shape of it. .. Modify -> Shape -> Convert Lines to Fills

Scale path without affecting stroke width

Hi all,
This seems like it should be simple to do but I'm not having any luck here. Basically I have a path parented to a null that controls several things, scaling them down, rotating and moving across the composition. One of those items is a path with a stroke of 32 px. I want to be able to scale the path itself down, but leave the stroke the same.
I thought I could key the stroke width manually but that has no effect- scaling it up as the path scales down doesn't seem to change the stroke width at all at the end keyframe, only at the beginning keyframe. I see the px count start at 32 and increase up to as it moves along the timeline, even though the stroke width on screen is still getting smaller as if there were no change at all to the width.

You generally don't want to scale the layer that contains the stroke, you want add keyframes to the mask path and animate the size of the path. This is easy. You just start by double-clicking one of the vertices and using the transform box.
If this technique does not work for you then you have two other options, both involving expressions. Both of these options use exactly the same expression to look at the scale of your null layer and both assume that the null is at 100% scale at the start of the animation. The option that I would choose would be to replace the mask path on a layer with stroke applied with shape layer path with stroke applied. You have so many more options and you're dealing with vector information. With either solution this is the expression.

sf (scale factor) is the x scale value of the controlling null that is the parent of the stroke layer or the layer with the stroke effect applied to a mask divided by 100. If you intend to scale X and Y of the parent you'll have to modify the expression and then combine the scale factors and this solution will not work as well. The original scale value is divided by 100 to turn it into a decimal value
ov (original value) is the original set value of the stroke.
nv (new value) is calculated by dividing the original value by the scale factor.
This is just basic algebra from the 7th grade. If your controlling parent is scaled below 0 then the stroke will go away because the value will change to a negative number. If this is necessary in your composition you can write an if statement that will change the nv back to a positive number if the scale factor becomes less than or equal to zero and solves the divide by zero error you would get with a scale factor of zero.
One last point, and this is important. This expression will produce accurate results if applied to the brush size of a mask path when using the Effects>Generate>Stroke effect to create your line but when scaled over 100% the line will begin to fall apart and anti aliasing will not be able to keep up with pixilation caused by the scale. Over about 120% the line will start to look thinner and over 140% it will look bad even though the stroke width is numerically accurate.

How to edit stroke width after line is drawn?

In Flash CS4, I'm trying to change the stroke width of my line or shape, with it selected, but the stroke width slider is greyed out (thus, unadjustable). Is it possible to edit a stroke width after something has been created? If so, how can this be done? I've tried selecting the line in all kinds of crazy ways, but still can't edit it.

I don't have CS4, but in CS3, as long as you're selecting the raw drawn object, you can use either the slider or enter a new value in the box. When you select the shape and line, does it appear all cross-hatched/speckled or is it a blue line surrounding it all? If it's the blue line, then you're not down to the raw graphic yet. You might also want to check to be sure the layer isn't locked.

Unlock Stroke Width?

After tracing a photograph, I have discovered that there are certain strokes within my tracing that cannot be narrowed less than 1 point. Some of the lines were done with the pen tool and some were done with the pencil tool but the tool used seems to have no relation to the problem. I have selected the entire drawing with the Select > All command. All of the lines (except for three) can be thinned down to 0.25 pts. How can I unlock the width of those three lines; they always seem to be wider than the other lines regardless of where I set the stroke control. Is there a lock command that I may have inadvertently activated? If so, I can't find it nor undue it.

Okay, I checked the transform panel, selected stubborn pathways, unchecked align to pixel grid, changed the stroke weight to 0.5 pt., and voila! No more locked stroke weight pathways! I can now select All and change all pathways to whatever stroke weight I want and all pathways respond. Problem solved (Maybe), but how did only 5 pathways become affected by the align to pixel grid in the first place???

Another question; accidentally yesterday, when I was using the pencil tool, the pencil cursor icon changed to a (+) symbol. How can I control that? I find that it is much easier to draw accurately using the pencil if there is not a large pencil cursor icon blocking my view. With the (+) I had pinpoint accuracy. Today I haven't been able to find the (+) cursor symbol even by accident.

SVG import doesn't scale "stroke-width"

with Illustrator, when opening svg image that content some scaled objects ("transfom=scale(10)" for example) I have a problem
filled forms are correctly scaled but the size of the border (""stroke-width"") doesn't change .
Is this a bug ?

Cell border stroke width is STUCK.

Sometimes, after selecting a range of cells and attempting to put a thick border around the whole set, when change the stroke width from the default of .25 (after selecting "Thick" [the heavy line] for type of stroke), it will not change -- it is stuck on .25, no matter what I do. I pull down to, say, 1.5 and it just pops back to .25.
This is a seemingly random problem -- often I have no problem changing the stoke width and creating exactly the sort of border I want.
Anyone got an idea of what I am doing wrong?

Unknown behavior and, as it behave on a random basis it will be difficult to identify it.
Assuming that something may be corrupted in the document, may you apply this scheme :
save as Numbers '08 document
Close the original document
From Numbers '09, open the Numbers '08 version.
If some features were dropped( functions unavailable in Numbers '08), restore them.
With a bit of luck, the oddity will be gone.
A more drastic cleaning would rely upon an export as Excel or as CSV.
Of course, you may send the file to my mailbox but there is no guarantee that the problem surface here.

When scaling in page setup, 1st page prints correctly, but subsequent pages do not scale correctly/too large for the paper, parts of the text missing

When trying to print in Firefox, and when scaling the page size in page setup, the first page prints correctly, but subsequent pages do not scale correctly and are too large for the paper, with parts of the text are being cut off at the top and right. This is not fixed by checking or un-checking the "ignore scaling/shrink to fit page width" in the print window, or by changing the scaling%.
I am running Firefox 15.0.1, on Mac OS 10.5.8.
The same problem happens in the print preview and if I save the print as a .pdf
I have tried all the fixes in the how to's and others in various forums with no improvement.
This happens every time I try to print a document scaled up or down only in Firefox.

The 2nd page print scaling error has been an issue with Firefox on the Mac since 2011. People at Mozilla have not considered this a major problem. Try printing anything at less than 100% and you'll quickly see how every page after the first page being scaled wrong gets old real fast. The lack of a solution to this issue forced me long ago into using Safari as my primary browser. Good luck waiting until version 21 for a solution. Current release is 18.0.2.

A way to change stroke width on form boxes?

Although I'm aiming to have people digitally use these forms, there exists a good chance that some will be filled out by hand. When I print these forms out the form field boxes are rather small and surrounded by a thick border.
Is there a way to change the form field box size?
Is there a way to chance the stroke width surrounding these boxes?

I am guessing that the form filled by hand will be done via printing the PDF form. Is this correct?
You can resize the field box in the Design tab in FormsCentral by drag and drop of the bottom right corner of the field editable box (true for multi-line text field). To increase the height of single line text field then you need to use a bigger font by selecting the form element on the form and chaging the font size in toolbar.
You can not change the border color or thickness for the HTML web form but you can do some post-editing of the form in Acrobat if you want to modify the borders in the PDF file.

Why doesn't the stroke width tool create smooth curves?

Am I the only one who has edited a stroke with the stroke width tool, then outlined the stroke only to find a countless number of points and noticeably unsmooth edges? Is there a setting or certain way to ensure that the stroke width tool won't corrupt the smoothness of my shapes? The stroke width tool is the most handy new feature I can imagine, but this problem makes it almost entirely useless, unless designing something where precision and smoothness are not important. What can I do?

I also have noticed that too, for example using the width tool with the same width on all points and expanding on open path results in a lot more anchor points than expanding the same path with the same weight or offset.

I haven't noticed that yet but creating paths with smooth anchor points are more smooth when created with less points, at least when I do it manually but if I use Object > Path > Add Points, or just click on a path to add points, I don't see loss of smoothness.

I don't know what your precision requirements are, may be an image example of what you are trying to achieve and what you are getting will help understanding you better but so far I haven't considered this as a problem and have used the width tool a lot in my work.
