Lock up problem caused by video card (apparently)

Hello,
I have MacBook PRO with Mac OS X (10.6.8) Serial Number: W86470W3W0M Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2CFEA33 SMC Version: 1.14f5 Boot ROM version: MBP21.00A5.B08 ; it is core2duo 2.33ghz, 2gb ram, x1600 video card 256mb and 250gb hdd.
It works ok in safe mode but when I launch it in normal mode it locks up afrer 3-5 minutes with artefact on the cursor http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/9939/img0932ko.jpg
It does not react on any hotkey combination as well as it is heating up quite much in area near F keys in upper left hand corner highlited with red rectangular. Also it is heating up on the other side in the same place http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/3008/img0933xo.jpg
How can it be resolved? I had motherboard swap recently.

Wish I had seen this thread 2 weeks ago, but you did save me from buying a new graphics card.  That was the last step (before chucking this mobo completely) in my attempts to fix the same problem.  It didn't bother me too much, except I also couldn't get any DVD player (tried 3) to work.  Would boot sometimes and at others gave a blue screen video error.
Flashing to bios 1.7 was the only thing that fixed it.  Tried different memory, updating software, various combinations of drives, etc.  For the record I tried bios 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, and 2.1.  Not sure what about those updates causes problems but there definitely is something wrong.
Thanks.

  • Genius needs to help! problems with my video card and system

Hey guys! I'm going to post my specs first so that you get a good idea of what I'm running on:
    MSI Neo2 LS 865PE.....MAT=Slow
    Pentium4 2.4C.....FSB=233=2.8C hyperthreading enabled ~>1.55V
Corsair TwinX 1gig PC3700.....memory on "AUTO" in BIOS with timings at 3,4,4,8 ~> 2.7V
    Radeon 9700NP.....stock speeds ~>1.7V
AlienX case with 2 fan400 watt power supply and 6 case fans
    Zalman Alum/Copper heatsink fan
1:I've had this motherboard for a few months now. I upgraded my video card from a nVidia Ti4200(128meg) to a Radeon 9800 a month ago, but I couldn't get it working at 8X AGP, no matter what voltages I threw at it. I returned it for a Radeon 9700NP hoping that it would work, but it still won't.
I'm using BIOS 1.9 and since there is no option to select your AGP speed, I could only try using ATI's drivers. Once booted into Windows, there is a slider you can move to select you AGP speed. On my machine It says that It has performed some tests and has concluded that AGP 4x is the best for my system....but my system supports AGP 8X!
I've moved the slider over to 8x (which requires a reboot) at least 5 times with each card but the slider refuses to move past 4xAGP after the reboot.
2: My second problem: I had an old stick of KingMax PC3200 and decided to buy 3 more sticks. Unfortunatly, the 3 I bought did not match the one I had, so I only put 2 of the new sticks I bought into my system. Immediatly, My system would crash, lock up, files were corrupt, and I got PLENTY of blue screens of death with a long message containing: 0x0000007  with all these other numbers and "0"s. I did a search online and found out I had a hardware incompatibility problem. I never got this with my old stick of ram.
I returned the 3 sticks of Ram and replaced them with the Corsair. Put my new Radeon 9700 in, formatted my hard drive....and within 24 hours, my system locked up 3 times, rebooted itself 5 times, and gave me the same BSOD as mentioned above with the same long message.
I didn't change anything except for the memory and the video card. I've been wanting to overclock, (thats why i bought the faster memory   ) but I'm not sure what to do at this point.
I have my FSB at 233 but I'm scared to go any higher because of previous system instability at stock speeds. My RAM was running on 400 and MAT=Turbo with the most relaxed timings at 3,4,4,8.
I've given myself hours of sleepless nights formatting when my system wouldnt boot into windows; overclocking....etc. I NEED HELP. PLEASE. PLEASE. Anything could work at this point.
I'm trying to get more info on how to run my system at a 5:4 ratio, also.
If anyone has problems like me or knows what could be the problem with my system, please reply to this post, it would help me a lot. I've been trying to fix these problems for a few months now so anything is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot to you guys that responded. I brought my computer home this past holiday and I want to let you know where I stand as of now. I guess this thread is like my blog for my computer. I want to clear some things before my first post makes everyone confused.
1- I have only 2 sticks of memory in my system: the Corsair PC3700 TwinX 512x2
I returned the 3 KingMax I bought, and still keep my old stick just in case.
2- I am using the 400 watt power supply that came with the case. I read some reviews of the case and I know the reviewer did not have problems with the power supply. In my BIOS, there are some voltages it is weak on. Lets say: it it should be 5.00+, my power supply will be feeding it 4.96v or something like that, but I dont know, or think, that is a major problem...
3- My computer will refuse to boot if memory speeds are set at anything below 400. SO....if I want to use a 5:4 ratio and have to set my memory speeds to "333" in BIOS, my system refuses to boot.
4- This morning, I did manage to overclock my FSB to 250. Specs are as follow:
Memory Timing @3,4,4,8,4.....speed set at "AUTO".....MAT at "SLOW"
    MY 2.4C's FSB was raised to 250 = 3.0gig
AGP/PCI frequency: 67.xx/3x.xx (cant go any lower)
    CPU voltage: 1.5500
    Memory voltage: 2.75
    Video Card voltage: 1.7
Everything was fine for the whole day until I heard something click in my computer around midnight, and then seconds later, my computer froze and made a continuous beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. (you can imagine)
This "click" and system crash has been plaguing me for months now. I dont know whay it happens. I was just using AIM when I heard the click and my heart stopped.
My memory speeds have been set to "AUTO" even at the FSB of 250. But I don't know if this still means my system is at a 1:1 ratio. I know the BIOS then adjusts the memory to work at 500 if my FSB is 250...so I assume it is?    I love 3gig, but somehow I feel that 2.8 is faster, since the FSB=233 running parallel to my memory, also at 233
A FSB of 250 is good enough for me, that's what I've been waiting 6 months for. If anyone knows how to set other ratios to achieve a FSB of 250+, please let me know, but as I said, my memory won't boot if its set at "333"

  • Mac Pro Locked Up and Now  One Video Card and Audio Not Working

Last night, my Mac Pro totally locked up to the point I had to power it off to get it to do anything. When restarted, one of my video cards and my audio are no longer working. I have dual monitors so tried switching the connections to see if it was the monitor and that was not the problem.
I tried doing a formal shutdown after the restart and this also did not clear up my problem.
Everything was working fine prior to the lockup. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you've added RAM and are using the nVidia 9400m video driver, you may be using incompatible RAM

  • HP Pavilion 500-314: big problems adding external video card

    Looking for some help.
I recently purchased an HP Pavilion 500-314.  Specs are as follows:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c04293928&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
The unit includes integrated Radeon R7 graphics, and comes with a 300w power supply
I purchased this unit in large part because it explicitly states that "Supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards".  I run a quad-monitor setup for my work, and have traditionally done this using an ATI Firepro 2450 card.
I have now tried three different external graphics cards, and can get none of them to work:
First attempt was with a VisionTec Radeon HD 5570 (item #900345).  This card supports quad monitor setup, and requires a minimum 250w power supply.  When I installed the card, the HP Pavilion repeatedly beeped a series of 4 or 5 (can't remember which) beeps, but refused to send an image to any video output (either onboard or the new card).
Next attempt was with an EVGA GeForce GT 610.  This is a dual monitor setup, and requires a minimum 300w power supply.  Got the same exact response as with the VisionTec (i.e. series of beeps...computer would not fire any monitors up).
So with both of these (new) cards, I basically gave up immediately as I couldn't even get into BIOS (b/c no monitors would work) to see what was going on.  My understanding is that the series of 4-5 beeps usually means that there is a graphics card issue, or that the card that has been added doesn't have sufficient power.  This is frustrating, as the HP Pavilion 500-314 supposedly has a 300w power supply, which is at least equal to the min required for each of these cards.
At this point, I pulled the ATI Firepro 2450 out of my old machine and tried it.  This card at least didn't cause the series of 4-5 beeps.  Windows booted.  However, once I log in, Windows tries to install the new (FirePro card) repeatedly, so the screen just flashes and flashes and flashes.  I then went into BIOS.  The BIOS indicates that the system is recognizing the card, and that the onboard video has been disabled.  However, there is still a signal coming out of the onboard video output (DVI), so it is not in fact actually disabled.  My sense is that Windows is trying to control two separate video cards (onboard + external), which is what is causing the problems.  I can disable the FirePro video card from w/in Windows (using Safe Mode), and leave the card installed, and things work fine.  However, as soon as I try and enable the card I get the endless cycle of flashing monitors again.
I have spent a couple of long sessions with HP tech support and they have been useless.  They claim that this isn't an HP issue since the onboard video works fine.  I find this response extremely frustrating.  I think this is an HP issue, since the BIOS doesn't seem to be properly disabling the onboard video.  Not to mention that the PC can't seem to interface properly with Windows 8 compatible PCI-E cards that explicitly claim to require less power than this unit has.
I am generally pretty computer savvy, but have reached my wits end on this one.  I would appreciate any help anybody could provide.  I have tried all kinds of combinations of variables (i.e. enabling onboard video, setting external card to primary, etc.) through BIOS, as well as combinations from w/in Windows disabling onboard video, but nothing seems to work.

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    lordmonk3y,
Both the ATI Firepro 2450 (which never worked properly, but the system did recognize and was able to boot with when installed) and the GeForce GT 610 claim to draw right around 30w peak (closer to 20w average).  Both are considered to be relatively low-draw graphics cards, and neither is a standout performer.  My work requires a lot of available screen space, but not a lot of graphics horsepower.  I don't do any gaming.  For heavier hitting graphics cards you might want to consider a bigger power supply.  Based on most of what I looked at, 300w is the bare minimum for a lot of these cards, and many of them require a larger power supply.
For what it's worth, I looked at the specs listed on the side of the PS in the 500-314, and it actually claims peak power of 300w, but only 250w at higher operating temperatures.  It's kind of a catch-22, because if you're running a more powerful card it's sure to generate more heat inside the tower, thereby lowering the available power from the PS.
I did notice that there's one other nice thing about using an external card.  The onboard Radeon R7 grabbed 1GB of the stated 8GB system memory for itself, thereby leaving only 7GB free for system use.  Now that I'm using an external card, I get the whole 8GB available for system use.

  • Problems G4 Possible Video Card?

I bought a G4 dual 1 GHz on Ebay. It has been giving me problems freezing up, etc. I finally reloaded the System software OX 10.4, reset the PRAM, now is seem OK except I get small lines (green or black) here and there across the screen. They show up when I'm on the internet or watching a DVD, etc. I took it into an Apple Store to the Genius Bar and of course it didn't do it. He thought it could be a video card. What do you think??

    Hi-
The card is a possibility, but so is EM interference.
-Be careful how you route the cabling to the display. Avoid speakers, and running parallel to power cables.
-If the cable to the display is a cheap one (makers other than Apple often use cheap cables) try a new good quality cable.
-Might also simply reseat the graphics card, and confirm all your connections.
-Inspect all connector pins, and make sure none are bent. Carefully, and securely connect each connector.
_Heat could also cause these problems. Make sure the inside of the tower and all components are free from dust. Confirm that all fans are working properly, and are free from dust.
Inability to duplicate the problem seems to indicate a routing or connection problem.

  • Problem with nvidia video card GTX670 in PS CC

I have been using PE10, but have just installed Photoshop CC v. 13.1.2 x64.  Although my video card (nvidia GTX 670, 2 gb RAM) is recognized by Photoshop, when I check "use graphics processor" under "preferences/performance" the converted RAW image is somewhat blurred at all zoom levels (except 100%) compared to when it is unchecked and sharp (for both Canon 1100D and 6D). The problem may possibly reside in the RAW conversion, because if I convert the file with "use graphics processor" unchecked, and then subsequently check it after it has been opened, the image is not blurry and I have access to all of the video card supported functions. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and found a solution?  Thanks, artmar4 (intel i5-3670, 24 gb RAM, Windows 7, 64 bit).

    artmar4 wrote:
I must admit it's not intuitve to me that the image would be somewhat blurred when clicking on "fit screen" and "fill screen" (but then what do I know.)
The GPU image-interpolation for display is more sophisticated than that of the CPU, but both methods cannot avoid compromising the image quality in some way in order to reduce the scale of an image. The GPU method can produce blurry results whereas the CPU method can produce ragged results.
Both methods produce very good results when the zoom is 100% divided by a power of two. However, "Fit Screen" and "Fill Screen" won't give a nice neat zoom level like that, except on very rare occasions when an image has a particular size relative to the screen.
Here's a (hideous) contrived example of the blurriness of GPU versus the raggedness of CPU. First is the image at 100% zoom. Then the doc on the left of each screenshot is being scaled by the GPU, the doc on the right by the CPU. Click the images to view without forum resampling!

  • Strange problems with nvidia video card

    Hi, I don't know if it's really a problem, but I suppose...
I had in the last days serious problems with the nvidia card and ubuntu (see ubuntuforums or askubuntu).
Resuming I couldn't boot ubuntu if the nvidia card was enabled...
Now I only use windows because of this problem but I have another doubt: why the power manager sometimes don't show me the GPU usage (see image)?
In any case the nvidia (I think) is always working (the external monitor plugged in  the DisplayPort works... I think that's a confirmation)
Another question: at times when I watch video on youtube the nvidia is enabled at others not... is this a problem of optimus or not?
For me it's important that windows works (no problem if ubuntu doesn't works.. I posted the links of the problems with ubuntu just  for information on what's happened before this problem with windows..

I'm using Firefox with html 5...
But I also tried also with chrome, in which the html 5 mode in youtube is not activate, and I have the same problem...
I find it strange because if i have the monitor plugged in the nvidia GPU is activated (of course) and if i'm whatching a video on youtube when i disconnect the monitor the GPU won't switch to the intel but it still remains the nvidia activated until i close this video..

  • Problem with m video card ?

    Hello there
I have a 3dfx card named creative banshee with a memory of 16 mb i want to configure it on my soloris 7 for intel this device is not displayed in the HCL list
    What should I do ??
    thanks
    Faisal

The easiest solution would be to get a different video card. I bought a Diamond Fire GL 1000 8MB AGP card for less than $50, and it works very well. I found mine by using PriceWatch - http://www.pricewatch.com
There may be third party products that would allow you to use the Banshee card under Solaris, but it would be easier, and probably cheaper just to get a different card.

  • Problem with Graphic/Video Card?

My 2011 15" MBP shows me the blue screen of death when it starts up (after the gray screen) and it literally just hangs there and I have to switch off my MBP by holding the power button.
I brought it to a Apple Service Centre and they told me all I had to do was reformat my MBP to get it up and running again (they could do it for me for $150... what a rip off). So after I reformatted it at home, I was hoping there wouldn't be any blue screen of death this time. But alas, no. It happened again.
I've read a couple of threads on here and I have a feeling it has something to do with a damaged video card. Also, I realised I can't watch videos on Youtube now.
Has anyone experienced something similar? I guess I have to go all the way down to the Apple Service Centre AGAIN...

Yeah if you reformatted the disk then re-installed os x fresh that most likely rules out any software issues . At least you didn't pay them 150$ just for them to tell you it needs more service though.

  • Firefox 6 causes my video card driver to freeze.

Since your last update the colors in Firefox have been glitchy and often change shades. Then the video driver freezes and gets recovered. • Think i have a problem with my Video card help ???

    Hi Guys
Ok reason why i think this i currently have a black screen
I can still use the mac via screen share from my G5 so i know all is ok & i am currently making sure i'm backing up
I have tried to connect it to an external monitor but the mac doesn't register that there is one there
One other strange problem i can type ok but i cannot use my trackpad while i am in screen sharing mode
    Any help would be great
    Thank You

Well it's either your graphics card or the inverter for the screen I'd guess - either way the only people who can fix this for you are Apple.
The fact that it doesn't see an external monitor would suggest it's the card ...
I know this might sound like a dumb question but you have turned the brightness up fully and tried a PRAM reset haven't you ?
Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.

  • Kernel Panic probably caused by Video Card: solutions?

    Hi,
    I have a G4 iBook, 12", 1.2 GB Ram, 1.2 Ghz, should be "Late 2004" Model.
This morning, while I was surfing, suddenly OS X crashed, just freezing everything on my screen (not the multi-language kernel panic screen), still on and working but no movement on the screen. Surprised, I hold down the power button and then again to start it again. Read the kernel panic (KP) log, send it to Apple and just after few minutes it does the same. The KP log is always the same, I use it for about a minute, then it happens again. Another reboot and then the iBook stops just before the login window. So, if I switch it on, it chimes, usual grey Apple logo, then the screen becomes blue as it always used to do before showing the login window but the it stops there.
If I boot with command-S, I obtain a working root command line, didn't check if it hangs in this way. If I boot in Safe Mode, it works, but it hangs there as well after few minutes. As you see in the KP Log, the cause is probably the ATI Graphic Card (even cnsidering that screen just freezes, as if the graphic card doesn't send nothing new to the screen), but I have no idea how I could solve this issue.
    KP Log is the following:

    Any ideas? Any help?

I believe you're right; your graphics card has some trouble. The iBooks are notorious for such things, unfortunately. I believe the heat of the machine causes the connections to loosen.
If you're in the US, you can send the logic board to Super Reball and have them fix up the connections; I believe the cost is around $75, if you remove the board yourself.
