Locked Cat in Lightroom 4.4

Cant find an irdata.lock file to erase inorder to unlock it.  Its not in my catalog backup file and I have search my entire hard disk with no luck.  Any help on unlocking this cat

From your screen shot it becomes clear what happened.
The images all show the question mark on the frame - Lr's indication that the link between the catalog and the file location is broken. Also, all your folders in the folders panel show a question mark before their names.
This link breaks when
- image files or folders are renamed or moved outside of Lr (in the Os via Mac Finde / Win Explorer), or
- image files are on an external hard drive that is not plugged-in, or
- images have been deleted outside of Lr, or
- the images are on an external drive, and the OS has assigned a different drive letter to it than before.
The remedy is to re-establish the link. Do not even think of re-importing because not only would you loose your edits, it would also create havoc with the catalog. In case of an un-plugged hard drive, the remedy is obviously to plug it in. If the images have been deleted, right-click the folder and select <Remove>.
To re-establish the link in all other cases: Right-click on the top-most folder in the folder hierarchy, for instance on your folder "2007", select <Find missing folder>, navigate to the correct location of this folder and select it. Lr will then find the sub-folders under "2007" on its own and you can watch the question marks wink-out one after the other.
Do the same with your folders "2006", "2005", etc.
For more see here: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
If all these folders for the years are themselves under a parent folder - not visible in your folders panel - you can do the <Find missing folder> procedure for this folder instead of the year folders. If there is such a top parent folder and you want to make it visible in the folders panel, right-click any of the year folders and select <Show parent folder>. Do this repeatedly until the top-level folder is displayed.

  • HowTo: identify readonly/locked files in LightRoom

    Dear community member.
If you are like me, you will sometimes mark (Nikon calls it "locking" - at the file system level the image is simply flagged as read-only) a photograph in the field.  The idea being that:
you don't want to accidentally delete a great photograph from the camera, and
marking the photograph makes it easy to identify the real-winners in post production.
As far as I can tell, there is no straightforward way of asking Lightroom:
"only show me the photographs that have been marked read-only", or
"please label the read-only files red"
I thought this would be a relatively straightforward task, but for the life of me I can't find out a simply way of doing this.  Have I missed something, or is this simply not supported by Lightroom?
Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I copy my photographs from the memory card to the hard disk using a memory card reader.  The files are then "added" to Lightroom, thus keeping the readonly file attribute.

You're right: Lightroom does not support this feature, and so it requires a script or plugin.
Perhaps the best way is to use a simple script (not a plugin) I wrote - it's free:
    Script name: 'Select Read-Only Photos'

PS - I think John Beardsworth also has something that will do it.

  • Lightroom Freezes

Lightroom 5.0 freezes when I attampt to import photos.  After shutting lightroom down using Windows Task Manager, Lightroom will not open

If LR was shut down with the Task Manager, it likely left a Lock file hanging.
Find the location of the LR catalog that had to be manually shut down. In the same folder should be a file that looks like this yourcatalogname.LOCK.
Delete this Lock file and Lightroom should open.

  • Lightroom Journal Files

Can someone explain to me please what a journal file is and what it's for?
I was copying some files round the other evening and came across a Lightroom 2 and a Lightroom 3 journal file. They appear to have been in existance for some time, I've just never been aware of them. they aren't causing me any kind of problem and everything is working just fine, I just wondered what they are for.
    Regards
    Phil

Phil, they appear alongside the lrcat file with a .lock file while Lightroom is in use. The journal file ought not be removed as it contains vital infrmation not yet written to the catalog while in use. Although if there are old ones left behind after crashes, etc ther would be no harm in removing those with Lightroom closed.
The lock file prevents others accessing the database while it is in use and possibly corrupting it.

  • How to restore recent changes from back up when lightroom 5 did not shut down properly?

I'm working on a Mac, which did an auto-update that apparently force quit Lightroom 5, which hadn't been closed for a week and thereby had a lot of "unsaved" work in its temporary files. Now when I open the catalogue I'm back to where I was a week ago, with non of the new changes. However, my time machine back up has backed up .lrcat, preview.lrcat, .lrcat-journal and .lrcat-lock files from right before the shutdown which should--in theory--have the data I need in them. How do I restore this data? I've tried several different methods with no luck yet. Thanks!

If it backed up the lock file, then Lightroom was open when Time Machine ran, and the backup therefore may be corrupted.  You could try restoring that backup (without overwriting your week ago version) and see if it'll open.  If it does, you're off and running.  What methods have you tried?

  • How to stop changes being synced from ipad mobile back to lightroom?

Until now, noone in my family has been able to look at any of my hundreds of thousands of photos as they are all locked up in lightroom except the small subset I upload to facebook or similar.
Now with lightroom mobile, they can see all my hundreds of collections.
    And change them.
Seriously, how do I stop my 3 year old and wife from destroying my man hours of editing?
How do I make the sync to ipad one way, or make them read only on the ipad?
Without this, sadly, light room mobile is useless.
    Any solutions appreciated.

I am so sad I could cry.  Luckily I only installed the trial version of 5.5 so I can go back to my lightroom 4, and none will be able to see my millions of family photos again.
I will remove lightroom mobile immediately from my wifes 64GB ipad (i don't have or want one), as my 3 year old uses it every day, which would mean ll my photos getting destroyed in minutes.
In so many years, it is astounding that I dont have a way for people to be able to see my 1 TB of photos locked up in lightroom, unless I tediously export them to disk, and then copy them over by hand to external devices each time I produce new photos, which is too much work.
This is such a huge missed opportunity for adobe to provide a product which lets friends and family view their hard work at home.
Personally, I would never edit photos on an ipad, I have 2 calibrated 30" IPS monitors, a workstation with 32GB ram and twin SSDs for lightroom work (I do weddings also).  But I do want for family to be able to look at them and use them, without having to give them my workstation.

  • Lightroom can't read my catalog since I put some pictures on iCloud

I recently activated iCloud on my PC so I could share some PC-stored photos on my iPad.  Ever since then Lightroom can't access my catalog.  I didn't touch the catalog - it's still on my PC hard drive - so I can't understand why my putting some pictures on iCloud would make  my entire Lightroom catalog inaccessible.  when I try to select the catalog manually, I get a message that the library is on a network drive, which it isn't.  I'm thinking that iCloud has to be the culprit.  I'm running Windows 7, if that helps.  Any suggestions?

Was the "library is on a network drive" the complete message, or was there more? If you know where your catalog is, go open the folder that contains it using Explorer, and check for the presence of a file ending in "lrcat.lock". If there is one there, you can safely delete it (making 100% certain you delete ONLY the file with the .lock extension), then Lightroom should be able to open the catalog OK.

  • Change French to English

I was using Lightroom 1.0 in English but now that I have upgraded to Lightroom 1.1 , the interface is in French. That could be because I am using a French MacOS X and because I am currently in France.
How can I switch Lightroom back to English again?
If I select the software icon in the Finder and type Command + I, the languages are grayed out and I can't deselect French.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Laurent

    OK, Don, problem solved.
Here's how I was able to switch Lightroom 1.1 back to English.
Thanks to Adobe Tech Support (and Don) for their help.
First I had to manually uninstall Lightroom (there's no faster way alas). Then I had select English in the International Preferences, the I had to download the 1.1 upgrade from the US server.
I'm on Mac using Mac OSX (French), so that's precisely what I had to do:
    1. Delete the following files or folders:
    The application file: Applications/Adobe Lightroom.app
    The preference file: [username]/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Lightroom.plist
The database, the database lock file, the preview file, and the database backups:
    * [Username]Pictures//Lightroom/Lightroom Database.lrdb
Important: Deleting the Lightroom Database.lrdb file deletes your library database!
    * [Username]Pictures//Lightroom/Lightroom Database.lrdb.lock
    * [Username]Pictures//Lightroom/Lightroom Previews.lrdata
    * [Username]Pictures//Lightroom/Lightroom/Backups folder
Presets and templates: [Username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom folder
    Registration data: Library/Application Support/Lightroom/Lightroom 1.0 Registrations folder
    Library/Receipts/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.pkg
    2. Go to "Préférences Système" (System Preferences), choose International, Select English as a language (drag it to the top of the list).
    3. Download the Lightroom 1.1 from the US site (maybe that can be done from an Adobe European site too, as there seems to be only one version of 1.1 for English, French and German).
Anyway, this is how I was able to upgrade to Lightroom 1.1 and keep the software in English although I am currently located in France.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT4085 How do I lock my ipad screen so the swipe action and side button on screen don't work? My cats do these things and the game disappears.

How do I lock my ipad screen so the swipe action and the side button on the screen do not work?  When my cats play a game on my ipad, they regularly swipe the screen and push the side button and the game disappears.

The button on the top that you use to lock and unlock or put to sleep is the power button.  The button lower center of the screen is the home button...can be used to also wake from sleep and switch to the base home screen.
Good to hear you are now able to lock rotation, even if you are not sure how you did it
If you go to the iBook icon, tap Store in the uppper left side of the screen, you can search for the iPad User Guide...a free download that will place the guide in your iBooks library as a great source of background information.
